While everyone was having their issues with the lack of alcohol or tea or coffee or whatever else their addiction was, Marguerite was doing what she did best. Performing. Well, right now they were in rehearsals and getting ready to open. With all of the setbacks between illnesses and animal attacks and the like, they had only now really started going into rehearsals now that the specifics of the scenery, costumes and props were all worked out. Either way, the actress was relieved to once again be on the stage and performing. Even if there wasn’t an audience yet beyond her husband. Which wasn’t exactly unheard of. The only difference being this was her on stage. Performing their life. And not just their life. But the moment that she had confessed to her husband without realizing it her sins. The scene where they found one another again while being completely unaware of that fact.
Mostly because it was just her and Nate at the moment, the others on their lunch or working on other scenes and the director was wanting them to explore the vulnerability of their characters. Percy’s devotion and betrayal and relief, Marguerite her vulnerability. The full spectrum of emotions in a single scene. Especially for Mike. Because Percy had felt everything at that moment, all the while unable to really express it beyond in expressions. It was going to be a tough scene. Dave was in the wings waiting to come out for Chauvelin’s entrance but for now..
“The footbridge. One o’clock.”
The setup of the unknown betrayal. The reveal of Marguerite’s past that had only been alluded to in previous scenes with Chauvelin. It wasn’t really an easy scene for Marguerite to perform, even now. Because while she knew how it would end, it was still a dark memory for her, the fear, the uncertainty, the desperation and feeling of being alone with no other options to her. The anxiety that she would lose her brother, her only connection. Still, she was an actress and she just happened to be performing her own life. Her own history. And really, it had been what? A year ago for her. A year and a month in Lawrence. And it had been what, two days between this moment and her arrival?
The words came easily, the responses to the scripted words that were oh so true. The direction having been given to just feel the moment.
“Do you know my brother? Armand St. Just? I have heard he is one of your band.”
“And?”
“They’ve arrested him. My god, I would never have agreed to this for Chauvelin, but he made it a condition on releasing my brother. They’ll kill him!”
Moving as the emotions took hold, Marguerite covered her mouth as she felt Nate move behind her to keep her from seeing him, to comfort her, awkward as it were.
“They will not kill him. They’ll question him.”
“But Chauvelin said-”
“Don’ trust Chauvelin..... this is not the first time you have done dirty work for Chauvelin...Is it?”
“No. He has forced my hand before. Please go he will be here any moment”
“How has he forced your hand?”
“He threatened to tell Percy, my husband, certain things about my past.”
“Such as”
“Dieu, they seem so petty now!”
“Tell me!”
Closing her eyes to hold back the tears, Marguerite moved away from Nate, preparing herself for the monologue. Preparing for the reveal, even knowing it was script, it was still hard given where she had to be in her psyche.
“In France, I lived as a free woman, you understand? I met Chauvelin the day we stormed the Bastille. He became my lover. It was brief, it was mad... but it happened.” Hands on the make shift railing, Marguerite paused before continuing. “This spring before Percy and I were about to be married, Chauvelin came to me, ‘How would you like for your husband to find what sort of woman you are?’”
“And would your husband have left you if he knew about your past?”
“I was so afraid that he would...” It wasn’t hard to go back to that fear, that conviction that Percy didn’t love her anymore. That he wouldn’t care, “But if he knew now, I doubt he’d care one way or the other.” The pain, the bitterness, the loneliness. It was all there, even though she got to go home to the complex, to her bed with her husband. Still, in this moment, she wasn’t Marguerite who had been in Lawrence, Kansas for a year.
“Go on.”
Even though she knew that Nate was talented, she could definitely feel behind her why they needed to work this scene.
“Chauvelin promised silence if I found out where the English had hidden away the Marquis de St. Cyr. But Chauvelin lied! He promised not to kill St. Cyr. He’s killed so often now, he won’t hesitate with Armand. Can you save my brother? If you cannot, then somehow I will! Clearly I am beyond scruples!”
“Do not be so foolish as to sail to France alone--”
“Armand is my brother!”
“Do you think that I would let any harm come to that boy!... Lady Blakeney.”
Hearing the timeout call, Marguerite let out a breath to get out of the mind set. With Armand still back home, this scene was hard. Really any scene involving her brother was hard, but this one, the uncertainty still existed on a different level. It was emotionally draining. But if she wasn’t giving it her all, she might as well not be giving it at all.
