Who: Marguerite and Percy
What: Dealing with the after-effects of the rescue at the carnival.
When: This afternoon
Where: Their apartment
Warnings: Mentions of death, everything else TBA?

The past few days had all blended together for Percy. Ever since people had begun to go missing, Percy had not slept much, if at all, simply because he was working on keeping a running list of those who were missing as well as coming up with a plan to go into the carnival and get them out. This whole situation played directly into Percy's strengths. He was a master of disguise and a mastermind at infiltration. As much as he had wanted to just rush in and get the people out, that was not the way things should go. It took time to properly plan such a production. But then Natasha had called for a meeting and on some level, Percy believed they had gone in a bit prematurely, but things had at least come out well. They had rescued everyone in the carnival, Dark was dead and gone, and the carnival had dispersed. Of course, he didn't like the fact that others that had been under Dark's control had escaped into the world, but what could they do? It would be nearly impossible to track down all of those people, and given they didn't even know who they were it would make it that much more difficult. And there was, of course, the greater threat of the Apocalypse still looming over them.

So really, it was no wonder why after returning the previous night that Percy had passed out once the adrenaline had subsided. He'd slept quite a long time, having needed the rest. After he'd woken up, the events of the previous night had started to set in. He hadn't taken the time to actually stop and think about what had been happening. Even when Marguerite had had a moment of doubt, he hadn't let her rest within it for very long, refocusing her on the task at hand. The last thing either of them needed was to suffer the effects of the carnival while they were trying to rescue people. As such things were setting in for him, he was realizing that all of those people had once been normal people corrupted by Dark. And some of them had died during the rescue attempt. Death was something Percy always knew was a risk in these things, but that didn't mean he liked it. It was difficult to stomach the fact that even in their twisted states, those people had been like them once.

After having some time to think through everything, he had more than an inkling that he should talk to Marguerite and work through things. He was more than certain that if he was bothered by some of the events of the previous night, Marguerite was perhaps bothered even moreso than he was. He'd made some tea and after pouring two cups, he carried them over to Marguerite, handing her one.

"How are you feeling?" He asked her. He doubt he needed to be more pointed with his question, that she would be able to understand his meaning and not deflect it. They both had come to prize being open and truthful with each other after the things they had been through together in their own world. And that hopefully was not going to be something that changed now.

Percy very well could have stopped Marguerite from saying what was on her mind, but where would that get them? It would stop them from dealing with things, and that was not a road he wanted to walk. Not after what the two of them had been through in their own world. The time where he had thought Marguerite had betrayed him and became distant from her yet still loving her all the same. He did not want to see his wife not face things that were bothering her. It would only cause far more trouble down the line for them both. And as far as Percy was concerned, they'd had enough troubles in their relationship and it was time to head things off as much as they possibly could before it caused any true problems.

"Yes I could have been killed, I know that. But when one is focused on saving another, one is capable of anything. And tell me, how could I hold it against you that you were trying to rescue Armand? If I held that course of action against you, you could hold my saving those destined for the guillotine against me. You could even hold the fact I had Armand helping me in such endeavors against me." Really, they both had done things the other could have taken personally. "Armand is your brother and I know you would do anything for him. But if I had been killed, the rest of my friends would still have been there, still have helped." Of course, Percy didn't quite want to entertain the idea of him actually having died there, but he was fairly certain his friends would have banded together to get Armand and Marguerite out of there.

This hero talk was very strange to Percy. On the one hand, he did like knowing he'd done some good and had people recognize that fact. But on the other, he didn't like the title of hero. It seemed really strange to him to be called a hero simply for doing what was right, for saving innocent people from deaths they didn't deserve. While Percy would hope that more people in the world were like him and would do the right thing when presented with a challenge, even on topics seemingly mundane, he knew not everyone did. There were those that made the wrong choices.

"Perhaps I am, but one should not be called a hero for simply doing what is right. But alas, the world does not work like that." Because there was injustice everywhere, the uglier side of human nature, the side that Percy truly hated.

It was true, that avoiding what she had to say would only make things worse and that the two had gone through enough in their marriage due to a lack of communication. Still, Marguerite knew Percy's feelings on Chauvelin, and more than that, his feelings on what had happened while the man's ghost had been haunting her and tearing her down. It didn't change the fact that it was still true, though. At least to her. At least in this instance. She couldn't ignore it, it wouldn't make it any less true. And having it shut out would just make it worse.

"Yes, anything is possible when one is focused on saving another, especially one they love." But that didn't change anything. It didn't change the fact that Marguerite had inadvertently betrayed Percy and that would haunt her. She was just good at not living on the what if scenarios consistently. Just everything with Dark, the Carnival, it brought them to the forefront of her mind and she had to work through it otherwise it would keep getting to her. But, she also knew that she couldn't blame Percy for Armand's decisions. He was foolish and hard headed, even though he was the rational one of the siblings. Still, she doubted that Percy's friends would have saved her. Or it only would have been for him and Armand, while hating her. Who could say for certain.

At least they didn't actually have to worry about that though.

"Percy, we lived in a time where doing the right thing was heroic because the consequence was death. So while doing the right thing shouldn't necessarily make one a hero, at times, it does. A hero is what you make of them. You knew that someone would take your mantle if necessary..."

Those had been his words before he had 'died' in front of her. That he may be killed, but someone would always be willing to sail into the fire. So reaching over, Marguerite took her husband's hand and squeezed it gently.

"It seems it is simply a matter of perception. You see it as doing the right thing, others as being a hero. And others as a nuisance who should have left well alone. I see it as you being the man I fell in love with and knew existed, despite the charade. Whatever it is, it's you."

Living with what if scenarios was not an easy thing to do by any means. Percy lived with them more often than he cared to admit, but such was the line of his work. Infiltrating France was dangerous and he well knew any of those trips he had taken, had even one thing gone askew, the entire operation would've been blown and he would most likely be dead. Some times those what ifs did haunt him, as they did after the things he'd witnessed in the Carnival. After all, the weapons used in liberating the Carnival were not necessarily the traditional ones. Killing anyone that wasn't Dark himself had not been an objective because everyone in there, even the most twisted of Dark's freaks, had been human at some point and were innocents underneath it all.

"I know this is a difficult time for the both of us. But what is important is that we are here together, we are alive and have each other. Everyone has their weak points, their faults, but those are what make us human. It is human to be flawed. Only when we accept our weak points and faults can we be at peace with ourselves." He knew it would be difficult for Marguerite to put that advice into practice, but he would be there with her every step of the way. And he was not about to let things Chauvelin said to her destroy her. Even if they were the truth, he needed her to accept them about herself and not let it tear her apart. If those things did tear her apart, then Chauvelin would win. And Percy couldn't live with that knowledge.

Looking down at their hands, then looking back up at Marguerite as she squeezed his hand, he smiled gently. "It is a difficult thing to accept, that I have been held in such esteem when I was merely helping my fellow man. But you are right, there will always be someone willing to sail into the fire." It was why he'd had such faith in his friends. He knew they would brave the fire if Percy was killed. Someone would always rise up when there was need for it.

Marguerite lived her life by a very strict code of living life for what it was. One life. That was all they had and so they should make the best of it, no matter their station in life. It was why she had never let something as simple and ridiculous as class or culture keep her from pursuing what she wished. Had she let her life keep her down, she never would have gotten out of the gutter. The country had been in upheaval, crying for equality... and she had taken it, she never had let it hold her down, so why ever would she stop? What ifs in such a life? They didn't help. They held one down and Marguerite took what she got and went with it.

Still, she did just quirk a brow at her husband. Generally speaking, she was perfectly fine at accepting who she was. She only had kept hidden the aspect of her past because she had feared that Percy's English sensibilities wouldn't allow him to stay with her if he knew. She worried he would have told Armand and she didn't want him to be upset at what she had done. It had been to ensure their survival, and she never was going to let herself be weak before the upper class, they would take what they wanted so she'd ensure that she was able to eat because of it.

"I well accept that part of me, Percy and am at peace with it. But that does not change the fact that I will worry what would happen should the wrong person realize that fact. That I worry how others may respond. Just because I have accepted something about myself does not mean others will."

Just as it had been with her former life. But she also did worry, she had lost friends in France and in a place like this, losing people was such a large threat, that she didn't exactly relish the notion of losing friends because of who she was. Though true, that meant they were not worth her friendship if they could not accept her. But that was still something that would bother her. Being around all that darkness, the faltering, it just made it more prevalent within her mind.

Thankfully, Marguerite knew the truth of who he was, and more than that, she knew that he survived. Had she not known that, well, that phrase would have caused her to break as it had been the last thing he had said before she had seen him guillotined before her. Instead she just smiled faintly.

"It does seem to be a common desire, people just go about their means of doing the right thing in different manners."

Percy saving the condemned as trials were little more than a farce, Enjolras trying to change the future though really, it would take so much more than a simple rebellion and loss of life to change the ingrained mentality of following those in charge and letting power get to someone's head. It still existed, even here. There was so much that needed to be done.

Now came the tricky part. He well knew Marguerite had a heart and cared greatly about people, he'd experienced it on more than one occasion before. As such he knew she was easily hurt if people didn't accept her for who she was when she accepted them. It wasn't easy to guard against things of that nature, and while Percy also wished to say that the wrong people wouldn't ever get ahold of that particular bit of information about Marguerite, sometimes things could not be helped. People confessed much under torture, or in this world where magic and other such things existed, reading another's mind could just as easily yield such information.

"Anyone who does not accept you for who you are never truly wanted to know you in the first place. I know you don't like hearing that and that such circumstances might be difficult for you to deal with, but that is the truth. But regardless of what the future holds, you will always have me here by your side. I love you, and you and I are stronger together." Percy well knew what they both were capable of on their own, but they were capable of so much more together. He never wanted to be without Marguerite at his side as long as there was something he could do about it.

The world had a lot wrong with it, but humans were imperfect by nature. Power and the desire for it drove many a good man down dark paths. Many people suffered at the hands of human cruelty, and while there would always be those who would stand against such injustice, it would always pop back up again somewhere else. It was difficult to eradicate injustice completely, but that was the saga of life.

"It is certainly interesting to see how people go about it." Percy smiled softly. There had been many acts of heroism that he'd witnessed since being here. Everyone certainly did band together here when chaos was underway.

The risk of caring was being hurt by those you cared for. And some people ran from it, but Marguerite embraced it, the exhilaration, the entire aspect. There would be disagreements, she well knew that. Especially as Marguerite wasn't exactly the most agreeable of people when she felt strongly on something. Which was a lot more often than she had been letting on. She had been trying to follow the advice Armand would have given him were he there. But every time she had held back a thought or opinion.... well, it was not something she could really keep doing.

So Percy's comment had her just quirk a brow at him. She knew that, she told Eponine as much whenever she seemed to doubt herself. That people who could not accept you for who you truly were definitely were not worth it. That they didn't really care. Maybe she held onto her friendships too tightly because she was naturally flirtatious and out going. She surrounded herself with people. She gave her all to her friendships so when they crashed around her, they hurt all the much more. But she had weathered plenty of losses before. Why stop now?

"Yes and? I'm well aware of these facts, Percy."

Didn't mean she had to like them. And if she lost her friends, the ones she had truly confided in, who she connected with more than most, yes, it would hurt and she would wonder why. But she also didn't take well to people telling her to be someone she wasn't.

"But yes, we will always have one another."

Sighing, Marguerite shifted and curled up against her husband, pursing her lips together in thought.

"It is. The question is if they will ever learn from the mistakes of the past, or continue to make them and then wonder why nothing happens, or not in the way they want."
