Castiel was struggling to find his feet. The fight against Lucifer wasn't the hardest thing to deal with. It was the shock of losing his Grace coupled with the shock of losing his friends, of having to start again. His biggest fear was a heavy weight. What if they didn't need him any more? He couldn't help them in their new lives, could he? What did he know of domestic bliss? He was the soldier in their corner. He was the big piece who could make the big moves when all else failed. Only his last big move had cost him his power and his relocation had cost him more. So here he was, starting again, slowly, full of mistakes. Sometimes angry, sometimes distracted, sometimes still. He only knew he couldn't give up while Lucifer walked. Sam and Dean, Jo and Bobby, they still lived. He wouldn't let his brother have them. Even if it took one last big move.
Back where he came from there'd been no Jo. She's just been lost, along with her mother. Cas hadn't had much time with them but he liked them. They were kind to him, had welcomed him as family. That had meant a great deal to the displaced angel and he had mourned their passing. Now he had an invitation to see Jo again and it was something good. Jo may be different but different to the non-existence she had? That, that, was an improvement.
Dean had said that maybe these were their best version. Cas wasn't convinced of that but he knew a living breathing Jo was better than one who was lost. Jo who was with the prophet. Jo who had a family. Cas didn't understand why anyone would do that at the end of the world but he wasn't going to turn down the invitation. He knocked on the door that led up from the Roadhouse and waited patiently for Jo to appear.
