Sleep wasn’t something that Regina found easy to come by in the last few days. She was restless and worried. In the time that she had been in Lawrence she had found other things to occupy her time. Sitting and waiting to see what appeared on the boards or if a text came through on her cell phone, was not her. She may never have been the most patient of individuals but she was not the sort to sit glued to something. But in the last few days that had changed. Every moment was spent in front of a screen, holding her phone tightly in her hand, or pacing about her room. The only moment that she had settled was when Katherine had first arrived in the house and when she had come knocking at her bedroom door. Throughout the film they’d watched, Regina pushed her worries aside. It would be so easy to turn off her emotions like Katherine had at one point. But that wasn’t possible. She was left feeling emotions that had long since been buried. Other than Henry there truly wasn’t anyone else that she had felt true concern for in a long, long time. She often scoffed at the irony of the Evil Queen feeling anything for anyone other than herself. But the truth was, Regina just wasn’t the same as she once was. There were people that she could consider friends here. People that she cared about. Camp had taught her a few things that she could put to use to protect those she cared about. News of Belle being possessed had incited sympathy within her. A feeling that she’d never felt before. From what she had read and learned from Galen, magic and the supernatural abilities that others had were gone. Leaving them all defenseless. But, if it came down to it she would put her life on the line for all those she cared about. Gaia, Katherine, Galen, Gannicus, Henry, Snow and even Emma. It didn’t matter that two were supposed to be her sworn enemies, she would protect them. Because at most those two were Henry’s family and keeping him happy made her happy. But that wasn’t entirely true. Snow was her stepdaughter and little by little the hatred had begun to subside. Regina remembered how things were before the blackness completely consumed her. How she couldn’t truly hate young Snow for what had happened. And how she had adored the young girl so very much despite the pain and heartache resting inside her heart. It was as if in the course of redeeming herself and trying to be better she was awakening the part of her that had loved Snow. Unlocking the part of her that she thought was gone forever with the loss of Daniel. Regina had mentioned to Snow that they should stop watching the show. It only brought more heartache for them week after week. More of her life as well of others on display for everyone to see. From the few conversations that they’d had recently, Regina knew just how much Snow was missing her husband. And for the first time, she wished that the Seal would bring James here to bring light back into Snow’s eyes. The pain that was lurking in the background was so hard for her to ignore. Though she never brought it up. Their relationship was still in the beginning stages of repair and one wrong comment could tear that progress apart. And that was something that Regina did not want. Redemption meant that she needed to let go of everything in the past. Let go of what had driven her to become the evil queen, seek forgiveness for the pain she caused, try to make amends and do right. Easier said than done. Like every Sunday evening, Regina settled down to watch what was happening in their world. She desperately hoped that they’d found a way to thwart Cora and Hooks plans. It was painful to watch her life play out on the screen but what other choice did she have. Knowing was better than not knowing, at least in this case. The thought made her cringe as she thought of Jefferson and what his curse had entailed. There were those that she could forgive and others that she couldn’t. Even when she reached full redemption that would be a fact that would most likely remain. As Regina heard herself utter the words, “I’m sorry mother. Without you I would not have become the person that I am now. But I had no choice, I had to do this. After you killed Daniel you told me something I’ve never forgotten. Love is weakness. Well, mother, you are my weakness, because I love you. That’s why I couldn’t risk taking you to the new land with me. Your grip on my heart is just too strong.” she broke. She had forgotten that day. Pushed it to the back of her mind. It was more painful now to see it played out. And knowing that for those who watched the show they would know that she had sent Hook to kill her mother. She should have known it wouldn’t have been that easy. At the time she just knew that it had to be done. But, Regina knew then and even now that she wouldn’t be able to do it herself. As much as she feared her mother, she still loved her. Most of the rest of the episode she tuned out. Tears streaming down her face. What broke her the most was to watch herself nearly die after she decided to place her trust in Henry. Sucking in all that magic could have been lethal but she had survived. To only have her heart ripped out again. The pain would have been more intense if she hadn’t been exposed to it all ready. Here she had already lost Henry and he called Emma mom now. But it didn’t mean that the pain wasn’t there. Taking a look outside, Regina knew that she needed fresh air. Galen and Gannicus had been patrolling while the rest of them remained indoors. But she had gone to camp for this very specific purpose. It took a few hours before she made the decision to get up and leave. In that time she had sat staring into space in the silence of the house. Lys had abandoned her to go sleep in her bed. The rest of her housemates were off somewhere. She hadn’t seen Galen or Gannicus in a few hours but assumed they were off patrolling. When she approached the window, Regina could tell instantly that something wasn’t right. It was far too quiet outside. The past few nights she could hear the sounds of creatures unlike any she was familiar with. Which wasn’t surprising since this world was so very different. Grabbing her sweater from the couch she walked over to where they had chosen to store what few weapons they had. Mostly knives, guns and holy water, but it was something. With a few weapons and her amulet, Regina left the safety of her home. Her guard was firmly in place and on alert. Any sound would warrant extreme caution. Hopefully the amulet did in fact do what everyone said it did. Because the last thing she wanted right now was to be possessed. Gaia’s house was on the outskirts of town and as she slowly moved closer, Regina couldn’t help but feel that something was seriously wrong. All around her she could hear the sounds but couldn’t pinpoint what it could be. Or if it was anything at all. All of a sudden a voice pierced through the air. A very familiar voice. Snow’s voice. Regina hadn’t heard from her stepdaughter since earlier in the day. When she had suggested that Snow make sure no one do anything rash she had also intended for the message to include her. But here she stood listening to a voice that she knew all too well calling for help. “Help, can somebody please help me. Plea” was what Regina heard and then it cut off. The sound tore at her heart and pulled her into action. It seemed as if it was coming from the direction of where the complex was. Regina generally avoided being near the complex. It housed far too many people who hated her and it was better to avoid them at all costs. As she grew closer, Regina could make out the form of someone fighting. Someone who was definitely not Snow. While the the girl looked like she was capable of defending herself, Regina was not going to let her fight alone. Two were better than one at times. And this seemed like it was one. Moving quickly she began to close the distance between them before she felt a sharp pain go through her side as she was flung a few feet in the opposite direction. The pain was felt through her whole body as Regina tried to pull herself into a standing position. Her hand firmly pressed against the deep gashes in her side. She could feel the blood slipping between her fingers but she was refusing to give up. No, she would fight to the death if she had to. But as she looked she couldn’t see what had attacked her anywhere. She wasn’t entirely sure it hadn’t been the thing currently attacking the girl. The only thing keeping her moving was the adrenaline that happening upon the scene had caused. It dulled the full force of the pain. Her immediate concern was helping the young woman fighting something in the middle of the street and then finding Snow. As Regina tried to get closer and help, she wondered if it was a battle that they could win. For just a moment she let her guard down as she flicked the safety off on her gun the way they’d been instructed at camp. If she had more of a variety of weapons to choose from, Regina would have chosen something else, but the gun was the most effective weapon that was still lying around the house. They’d been instructed that fighting these creatures wasn’t going to be easy and killing them was difficult. What Regina hadn’t intended to happen was for a creature to come at her in the short moment her guard was down. It happened so fast that she wasn’t prepared for the attack. All she saw were claws coming towards her from the corner of her eye. But still she was able to pull the trigger at the creature harming the girl before the claws sliced through her neck. Her body once again being thrown to the ground. As her back hit the ground images flew through her mind of those she cared about. The most prominent images being those of Henry and Snow. A lone tear streamed down her cheek as she thought of Snow and how she hadn’t been able to find her and save her. As her eyes closed her last thought was of regret. Regret that things had been left unfinished. |
