Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Enigma and Bruce Banner
What: Performing medicine
Where: The city of Lawrence
When: Evening, monday night
Rating: TBD - Probably mid-high

Enigma watched out the window as the van drove towards the compound, pulling her hat from her head and tucking her braids up into it again, before replacing the hat on her head. She was grateful, to be given the chance, especially after Jacen's words on the forum. She needed to do something, and while she could be out there, fighting, it was something she wanted to avoid, to bury that part of her.

The less she was around violence, the less inclined she was to perform it.

She pressed her face against the glass of the window as they approached the building that was her destination, eying the silhouette of a man, taking him in, cataloging the details she could see before leaning back as the van pulled up to a stop next to Bruce, the door opening. She blinked, looking at him, before scrambling to zip up her hoodie, blushing. “Right, that Doctor Banner.” She gave him a weak smile. “I swear I'm not this stupid normally.” The smile fell and she face palmed, sighing heavily.

Bruce chuckled at the sight of her and he stepped in and closed the door. "It's okay. It happens to us all." "Van: Scan police bands, and aim for most recent activity."

He settled back as he glanced at her, the screen i the seat in front of him turning on and splitting in two. One showed the network and the other a secondary feed of the van systems.

"How are you handling all of this?"

“Honestly? I'm terrified sir,” she said, glancing at him. “I mean, I've been in fights before and know how to handle myself...but this is a new ballgame. I have people I care about here and it's...distracting me.” Okay, probably not the best thing to mention to the guy who gave her a chance, but she had a feeling he could understand that. Being a part of a group rather then an individual and the changes that came with it.

Or maybe he was going to kick her out of the van, who knew.

She flipped through the messages on the screen, frowning as she clicked on Tony's, wincing. “My boss became homeless and I got fired in the same instant.” she muttered, sending a quick note, worrying at her lip. She glanced at Bruce again, studying him silently before speaking. “So, we just drive around looking for trouble that the van pings us to?” she asked as she got Tony's reply, giving an aborted snort and typing her answer.

"It's smart to be scared. and it's human. Give yourself some slack. And I find that thinking of the people I care about, knowing I can best help them by helping others then getting back to them? It helps."

He nodded over to her, smiling.

He tapped an answer of his own to Tony's and a few others, then made a brief post as he made a quick directive to the compound via his computer.

"Yes. Either the net or the police radio will lead us to where the trouble is."

And sure enough, a moment later, a robbery in progress, one involving stranger people who shrugged off a bullet, leaving three wounded, came over the line. "Roll it." and the van changed course and increased speed.

"There are medical kits under the seats."

She smiled at his words, feeling comforted. “Thanks, Doctor Banner.” she said, checking the replies to her. Her face grew more upset, confused and stormy as she inter acted with Felicia, before angrily typing out a reply and closing out the thread, visibly jerking her mind away from the conversation.

She wasn't a fucking liability.

Enigma undid her seat belt, sliding out one of the kits, holding it with her feet so that it didn't go sliding as they took a turn. She grabbed onto Bruce's arm for a second, leaning on him before scooting back into place and buckling her seat belt. “Right, sorry about grabbing you.”

Bruce glanced at her, confused, for a moment, then nodded. What was that about? "No problem. Just be careful." He smiled a little. Was she nervous?

"Don't want casualties inside here as well as out there."

He nodded as the van peeled around another corner, then came to a halt.

Bruce snapped out a small badge and grabbed his medkit, hopping out as the door slid aside. They walked into a minor scene of chaos.

"Bannertech Volunteer Medical Team., We got the call to stabilize until the paramedics can get here." The harried cop took one look at his badge and his medical kit and passed them along to the wounded. Bruce hurried forward, waving Enigma along.

"Sometimes, money and stress work together. Now come on."

The two wounded were close together, so he snapped out his sensor, then pointed to her. "Pull out your sensor and press the blue button, and point it at that one." He was doing the same as he knelt at the side of one of the wounded, visually checking them as his sensor unit did it's job.

“Right, wouldn't want that,” she said, staring at the building, praying she wasn't about to be caught out in her lies. She followed him, more then willing to let him take the lead in things, blinking at at his words, but easily recovering, not wanting anything to look out of place.

“Bannertech?” She asked once the cop was out of earshot, curious. At his order, she nodded and knelt next to her victim, pulling out the device that was similar to what he had held, pressing the button and scanning the woman's body with it. “I've got a head injury with no broken bones and a sprained ankle...I'm going to guess from running in stilettos without practice,” Enigma said, as the scanner finished. “Wow, easy words. You have the coolest toys. Want me to wrap the ankle?"

"Company I founded here to slowly patent things and make money once I realized I was stuck. With how things went the first week i was here, I was determined to not be caught with my pants down ever."

He nodded as he ran his scanner over his victim, the one who had actually been shot, and began examining the wound closer. Thankfully the bullet had missed anything vital but gone right through, and the person was bleeding badly. He started using a pressure patch to stop the bleeding on one side while he carefully rolled her over to address the other wound.

"Yes, please. There is wrap and splinting in the kit. Sorry if it is all in simple speak, it's part of a proposed kit for military units who get cut off from their medics. Everything had to be simple for people getting shot at with no medical knowledge." He flashed her an apologetic smile while he worked.

"Nice work...considering I just got fired, ya hiring?" she asked with a grin, reaching for the bandage and carefully winding it around the woman's ankle and foot. She was tempted to ask if he was caught with his pants literally down, but bit her tongue, guessing something like that would be one of the things Peter had mentioned thinking before speaking.

Plus, it was not an appropriate place to flirt. Nor time. Nor would Connor appreciate it.

She finished off the wrap with two metal butterfly slips. “It's fine by me, it's actually a great gadget and a smart idea to make it easy to understand in high stress situations. I'm sure there are several groups that would love to get their hands on it, police, fire, wilderness rescue...actually anyone who does anything in the wild, especially mountain climbers.”

"Maybe. And for the moment, you're welcome to join up. It's not a big company, but it's slowly expanding." He smiled as he finished with his patient, and listened as the ambulance came around the corner.

"Here we go. Come on. Pack it up. The pros can take it from here." He stood and spoke rapid-fire with the ambulance techs, then led the way back to their van, and in.

"Van: reload and reset."

And once they were in, the van set off smoothly again, scanner running.

"I would like that," she said, smiling at him, gently laying the woman's leg down and closing up her kit, following after Bruce. She loved Stark Industries, loved her work, her co workers...even her boss.

But she didn't feel accepted there.

She didn't know how it might be different under Doctor Banner, but she wanted to spread her wings and be her own person for once, not what someone expected her to be...and he didn't seem to have an ideas of who she was or wasn't, just what she did right now.

But that could wait, right now, she had this, and was enjoying working with him and the action (as well as Bruce's calm demeanor), was helping her keep calm and collected.

"I hope we don't get anything too serious," she said, worrying at her lip. She also hoped she didn't have to use the gun in her hoodie's pocket.

Bruce nodded and settled back in the van.

"Me too. If we do, it'll mean the regular authorities and the main heroes out there are overstepped, and that will mean things are going even more to hell than normal."

He sighed. "We can patrol off and on during this mess, or with others. And in the meantime, you are welcome to stay at the Compound, if you don't have a home. The main building is off limits, home to a limited few, but the rest if being opened to those who need someplace to be with a large number of defenders."

"Thanks, but I have a place and why take up room that another person can use," she said, smiling at him. She nodded at his words, watching the street outside for a moment before looking at him again. “Tell me something about yourself, Doctor Banner...anything. I mean, obviously I've...read about you,” she stated, thinking of the t shirt hiding under her hoodie. “But reading isn't the same, and if something goes wrong out here...I want to know something about the man I died with. So...anything, favorite food, music...memory?”

It was a game she and Duela played on long, cold nights, when they were stuck waiting. Waiting on rooftops, in alleys, in ropes...waiting for death. For action...for anything to pull them out of their miserable existences and back into the world of bright lights and noise.

”Tell me a secret....tell me a story...tell me a thought...”

Tell me anything so that I don't have to think about where we are and what we're doing, so that I can still call you my best friend after you stab me in the back....so that I have something to say at your funeral when we bury you never to the other heroes/villains/teenagers idiots....so that I can know you...so that I can grieve for you...so that I can love you.

She blinked away the memories of Duela's laughter and smiling face, rubbing absently at her chest over her heart, where it still hurt. Duela had died such a short time ago, and Enigma hadn't even bothered to stop long enough to care...until now.

“I'm sorry, that was probably too personal to ask, I shouldn't...sorry.”
