Spike & Tara
Wednesday night, November 14, 2012; Spike's flat
Explaining bad things in Tara's future.
TBD/In progress

This was one conversation he was not ready for.

Spike poured up a glass of whiskey. God knew he'd need something to help get him through this. This was one conversation he was not ready for. How did you tell someone that in their very near future back home, they died? And on top of it, as a result of that death, their girlfriend goes on a magic-fueld, murderous rampage? Fuck. He really wasn't prepared for this. He downed that glass of whiskey and poured another one, spinning the glass slowly on the counter top.

After a moment, he picked up the glass and headed into the living room, dropping down into the chair there. He let out a sigh and decided not to stress much until she got here. Now, he just had to wait.

Tara had to admit that she was worried about what Spike might have to tell her. OK, she had noticed that a few people clammed up around her when they first saw her, and she really had no idea why. She just...hadn't thought all too much about it. For it being a place that an apocalypse was going on, it actually wasn't too bad here. At least she didn't have to see Willow, which was still too utterly painful to think about all too hard.

Taking a deep breath, she finally picked up her hand and knocked on the door of Spike's apartment. Whatever he wanted to talk to her about, it couldn't be that bad, right?

The knock to his door signaling the reality of the task at hand came all too quickly. He sighed again, set the glass of whiskey on the coffee table and pushed himself out of he chair to answer the door. "Hey, Tara..." He hadn't actually seen her face-to-face until now. It was a bit surreal, even if he was technically in the 'back from the dead' category himself. He stepped aside to let her inside and shut the door behind her.

How was he supposed to start this conversation? Did he go with small talk? Ease her into it? Did he just dive in head first, guns blazing? While her back was still to him, he shook his head slightly. There was no turning back now. "Look, you know I'm not really a small talk kinda guy, so...let's just get it out, all right." Maybe this was the wrong route, but he thought it might be better this way.

He led her into the living room, motioning for her to sit, taking again to he chair he'd been in moments ago. "Remind me again, where were you before you turned up in Lawrence?"

She smiled at him when he answered the door. She wasn't exactly close to Spike or anything, but he had helped take care of Dawn while Buffy was gone that summer, so she couldn't hate on him nearly as much as others like Xander did. He could have simply ran off while she was gone, but he didn't. That had actually earned a good deal of respect in her book. "Hi," she said as she walked inside.

"No, never really thought of you as a small talk kind of guy," she said, sitting down on the sofa when he motioned for her to sit down. She knew something was up, something that people had been tiptoeing around. She wondered if she had missed Willow going further into magic and having the addiction to it that she had seen some of before.

"It was right after I broke up with Willow," Tara explained when he asked 'when' she had come from. "I had just moved into my own apartment, and I had taken Dawn out to try and explain some things to her about it." She frowned as she looked up at him. "What is it? What happens?"

He nodded slowly as she explained. It seemed so long ago now, for him, but he remembered the events between then and...what he had to tell her. He had almost no plan whatsoever for how to lead this conversation. He was playing it completely by ear and when she prompted him, he realized that a bit more fully than he had before.

"A lot..." he admitted, letting out a breath. "But the thing that's got everyone walking on eggshells around you?" He picked up the glass of whiskey he'd set down on the table earlier, downing about half of what was left before returning the glass to the table. He realized with increasing awareness, there was no easy way to say it, so he stopped trying to figure it out and just said it, plain and simple. "You died, Tara. Pointlessly...accidentally, even. Warren, he tried to kill Buffy, but...shot you instead." And, he didn't add just yet, that wasn't exactly the worst of it.

It seemed like everyone but Xander that had come from Sunnydale (or even LA) was ahead of her now. It was kind of disconcerting, actually.

When he explained why everyone was 'walking on eggshells around her' as she put it, she felt like all of the air had been knocked out of her chest. She wrapped her arms around herself, taking several deep breaths in a vain effort to calm herself down. She had to admit that, no matter what she had been thinking, she hadn't really thought of that. "What else?" she asked. "You're leaving something out." She could tell, somehow, that he was. What could be worse than her dying?

He watched her as it hit her. He knew it wouldn't be easy. Hell, it was hard enough to have to tell her. To hear it, and not already know it? He couldn't even imagine it, really. He didn't say anything as she tried to calm herself down. She didn't need him blathering on while she was trying to process it.

And there it was. That pointed question he really didn't want to answer. And there really was no backing out of it. Not now. "Willow...she tried to bring you back, but...it didn't work because it was a human death, natural in the sense that it wasn't a supernatural force." This was where it got messy. But again, Spike had no plans, and decided to basically be blunt with her here as well. Like ripping off a bandaid, right? "That little magic addiction? Yeah, it didn't get better. She went on a tear. Wanted revenge."

Tara really felt like her world was falling out under her as Spike kept telling her more and more things. She actually wasn't too sure if she wasn't going to pass out right here on the floor and everything. She totally could right now, with all that he was telling her.

Willow going on a tear? That was actually less shocking that finding out that she had died. Tara absolutely loved Willow. She still did. She likely always would no matter what happened to her. She understood that Willow was reckless with magic, though. "What did she do?" she finally asked Spike after a few long moments of silence. She was worried about what she did. "Tell me, Spike. Tell me the truth."

Spike took a moment before he continued. There was no point in holding back now. "She killed Warren, got her revenge, but..it wasn't enough, in the end, she thought she would end her own suffering by creating an Apocalypse." The quick and dirty version was better than drawing it out, as far as he was concerned.

Tara had been starring at the ground when Spike continued, but her eyes shot up quick when he explained everything that she did. Well, she would have expected Willow to lose her mind, but to kill someone, and try to bring about an apocalypse? That was just...insane! "I take it th...that she didn't succeed with the apocalypse?" Tara asked, but she could already guess the answer.

"No, she didn't." He shook his head, "It was Xander that got through to her in the end...cut through back to her humanity." He explained simply. "I don't now all the specifics exactly, I was busy going through the trials to get my soul back. But that's the basics, anyway."

Tara let out a sigh of relief when Spike said that she didn't succeed. If anyone could get through to Willow other than her, it would have been Xander. The two of them had known each other all of their lives. "Trials?" she asked him. She was looking for a way to distract herself for the moment.

"Yeah," he nodded. "Nasty stuff I had to go through to prove I was worthy of a soul." He took another drink from the glass of whiskey as he thought about it. "Wasn't pretty, but...got what I needed out of it in the end."

A small moment of silence lulled between them before he spoke again. "You know, it all turned out in the end. Willow really curbed that magic addiction, and...she's one of the most powerful witches out there. Really got a good handle on it in the end..." That probably wasn't a huge consolation, but it was something.

Tara couldn't help but feel a little proud of him that he had actually went through all of that effort to get a soul. She wondered what had brought on the idea to go that far, but didn't ask.

It wasn't much, but it was something. "I'm glad that she finally did it then," she said simply, standing up. "I should probably go. Thank you for telling me everything, though." Right now she just wanted to be by herself and think for a good long while. Then she was going to ask a few people why they hadn't told her this stuff yet.

He nodded when she mentioned she should go. He could only imagine how much her head was spinning then. All that information to process at once, it was an overload, he was sure. "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, pet, but with so many of us showing up from after... well, I thought you should know." he said, standing from his seat to walk her out of his flat. "I know you have to process, but...don't dwell too much. This place is a second chance for all of us."
