Talking to Spike so frankly was something that was sort of rare for Buffy. Sure, she felt like she could tell him anything and he wouldn't have any room to be judgey, but this was different. She wasn't only being honest with Spike, she was being honest with herself. Old Buffy would have told Spike to fuck off even though she didn't really want him to and then kissed him anyway. They'd started the night off like that, Buffy had told him to leave, but they weren't kissing yet. They were talking. And Buffy wasn't sure she could openly admit, you know, out loud that she wanted Spike.
"You know we can't," she said finally. "We can't keep making the same decisions and expecting a different outcome. That's the legal definition of insanity, you know?"
