Myka was beyond stressed. She was worried about Pete. She understood that he thought with his heart. It was why they balanced the other out. While he thought with his heart, followed his ‘vibes’, Myka saw things on a more logical level. She used her head, sometimes at her heart’s expense. Well, actually, mostly at her heart’s expense. And honestly, while she still didn’t agree with his decisions in regards to Tess and was worried about the codependency of it all, she figured the fight was like any they had. But then he was gone. Taking a break. At least, that’s how the note read and getting the information from Helena, that the two agents had disagreed about the use of an artifact in their future and that was what caused him to leave? It hurt. A lot. Because Pete was the one always insisting that they were family. They were a team. Teams disagreed but they didn’t run away. The fact that his ghost was himself? Myka couldn’t handle that because it meant she had failed her partner.
And that wasn’t even adding in the whole Alice issue.
Sleep hadn’t happened since she woke up to the giggling. She had heard Helena scream when Christina had shown up, but the curly haired agent was already chasing down Alice. While cursing Cheshire for showing up and wishing for an Alice to show up. Honestly, the timing had been awful. On a logical level, Myka knew the humanized cat had nothing to do with her current plight, but she was stressed and it was Alice. Alice who had locked her in the mirror while she used her body. The darkness and silence, the cold. It was so unnerving, so.... depressing.
Alice had been thrilled upon learning that Pete had died in their future. It was something the childlike spirit could use against Myka as the brunette had already learned she couldn’t actually steal the bodies of those in the house. Alice liked the house. It reminded her of home. Victorian in design. But Myka knew she couldn’t make good on her threats and so Alice took the information she could get to taunt the agent who trapped her back in the mirror.
“Myka Bering, unable to save any of her partners. And now Pete is gone. Gone gone gone because you scared him off.”
Groaning in frustration, Myka glared over the top of her book. She had tried to Neutralize the girl, but nothing had happened. And then everyone else was talking about ghosts and Myka realized she was stuck. So while she had stopped trying to chase down the homicidal girl, Myka was still on edge. Because she didn’t trust Alice.
“I wonder how Pete died. We should watch.”
Ever since Pete’s departure, Alice had been throwing that at Myka.
“I bet we could recreate it. Bet we could make him a real ghost. You and your bossiness scared him away. No one likes a bossy person. And because of that, you can’t protect him. You’re a very bad partner. Sam...”
“Don’t talk about Sam.”
“Oh, did I strike a nerve!”
Cringing at the giggle, Myka slammed her book shut.
“How long is your list, Myka Bering? Of all the people you failed?”
Ignoring. Ignoring worked. It had to work. So going to her closet, Myka pulled out a jacket. She’d just go get some coffee. Out. In public. Where Alice couldn’t do anything and she had a reason not to respond to the taunts so as to keep people from thinking she was completely crazy.
It was early, which meant there would be the morning rush of people getting coffee before work and that was just what Myka needed. Yes, she knew she should probably have Steve come with her as Helena had Emily and Christina and Claudia wasn’t that much a morning person last she checked, but Myka was too stressed to think about that. She was already worrying about keeping Pete safe when he didn’t even want to be around them. And the constant jabs about her failure as an agent really didn’t make her feel any better.
It was after she had gotten her coffee and was walking down the sidewalk when things went wrong. Alice had gone quiet. That was the first sign that Myka should have realized that something was about to happen.
Alice? Alice was bored. She couldn’t hurt people beyond Myka. Which was fun, sure, except the fact that people were always around so all she had were the verbal jabs. Oh, the partner gave her a wonderful opening and she took it. But it was Myka trying to avoid her that fueled the ghost’s desires. She wanted to kill and damn if she couldn’t kill the bitch who trapped her in that shard, who Neutralized her, killing her. But what she could do? She could steal her body all over again and oh the fun they’d have!
“Myka, Pete’s about to get hit by a car and you’re stuck!”
At the voice, Myka spun quickly, her heart picking up at the thought of failing her partner, only to see her reflection flash in a shard of glass Alice kept on her before everything went black. She was back in the darkness. There was no sound. No light. No heat. Just cold. She was trapped.
Alice grinned, feeling proud of herself, before she realized that the body she wanted to use just collapsed to the ground, unresponsive.
“What?! NO!”
She was supposed to get to finally play yet she couldn’t get into the body! This was so unfair! So while people swarmed around trying to figure out what had caused the young woman to collapse, Alice just sat on the ground, scrunching up her nose in discontent. Now what was she going to do beyond taunt a glass shard? Ugh. This wasn’t okay. Not okay at all.
