To her credit, Peeta could see the guilt on Prim's face before she said a single word. She should feel guilty. He'd been worried...he didn't even want to know how Katniss would've reacted, had she been in town and known. Half of the regular patrol team had gone looking for her; Peeta had been terrified that she'd gotten caught up in something bad, especially given the timing. Mostly, he'd worried that he'd upset the wrong person with the way he'd talked to Kon the night previous and that someone had meant to punish him for it, even if it wasn't Kon. He hadn't ever really liked the guy, but he'd never seemed the type for that sort of revenge for something as trivial as a verbal tiff on the internet. But, Peeta didn't know Kon's friends and Oliver had warned Peeta to be careful. Moving forward, he'd listen.
"You should be," he admonished without missing a beat. "You should have left a note or just messaged me back to say you were here. I wouldn't have bothered you. I know what it's like to want to be alone...but after everything last night—" Peeta cut himself off and looked down, setting his jaw again. "All you had to do was leave a note when you left to say when you thought you'd be back, Prim. I wouldn't have given you a hard time."
He looked back over at her as she set her chin on her knees, staring out ahead of her. In that moment, in her body language, Peeta almost saw himself. Prim wasn't the little girl Katniss wanted her to be; remembered her to be. She wasn't blind to what happened in Lawrence, it would seem. She looked back at him and Peeta sighed. "No, I didn't call her. She's going to be mad if she finds out, so this can stay between you and I...assuming none of the search party clue her in," he said. "I think we'd both be in a lot of trouble. ...moreso me," he admitted, frowning.
Letting out another sigh, Peeta looked away from her. "You okay?" he asked, not entirely sure he should have bothered; if she was anything like her sister, she'd say she was and leave it at that. The tone would have a finality that said it was none of his business and he'd have to let it drop. Peeta didn't know Prim that well, yet. For all he knew, just asking was a waste of breath.
