Emma Swan finally found her fairytale ([info]lostfairytale) wrote in [info]wariscoming,

Who: Jim Moriarty and Emma Swan
What: Discussions on a word the Consulting Criminal and the Abandoned Princess can't seem to see
When: Sometime after this but before this.
Where: The Moriarty-Swan house. You read that right.
Warnings: God, it's these two. Don't read on an empty stomach. Or with small children around.

Emma was exhausted. But she kept going. Though she considered her ridiculous and kind of stupid, Romana did have a point. They really weren't that different, the two of them. One day, Emma would be in the same place. One day, she'd have to decide between the people of Lawrence and the man who'd offered her the world. It was a choice she wasn't looking forward to. And so she continued taking each day at a time, swearing to herself over and over that she could get him to change. Oh, he'd never be a model citizen. She might not make the best choices, but she wasn't stupid. Jim Moriarty would never be what anyone would call a 'nice guy'. But maybe, just maybe, she could prevent the muderer in him.

Just in case, though... Just in case, she threw herself into helping with the plastic issue. First to help Jo find Chuck, and then simply to help. She'd done all the research she could, she'd given Claudia as many clues and tips as her non-sci-fi-loving, non-technological self could. She could hack a computer, but that was about it.

Well. She hadn't exactly been the most law abiding citizen growing up, either.

Jim either wasn't home when she first got there or else she couldn't find him. And calling the huge place 'home' was difficult for her, still. She'd been staying with him more or less constantly since Pestilence had landed her in a pathetic pile of pain. But officially moving in? That was a big step, one she hadn't made with anyone in a very long time, unless Mary Margaret counted. And in this scenario, she didn't think she did. But Jim's staff knew her, they actually liked her, and that was just...strange. But not entirely a bad strange. They took care of her, even if they did find it weird that she still attempted to clean up after herself or cook her own breakfast.

Knowing she had some extra time, she hopped in the shower to try and rid herself of the smell of kerosene, melting plastic, and that weird lingering barbeque smell. She found she didn't feel vulnerable, though, when she entered the living room with damp hair and a tank top and jogging pants. If Jim did feel...well, that way, about her, he would no matter what she wore. Maybe it wasn't the attire of a fairytale princess, but it was Emma Swan and he'd have to live with it. She wasn't her mother. He'd learned that quickly enough. If he wanted the true fairytale, he'd found the wrong woman.

But he'd claimed to want to give her a fairytale of her own. Her own story. So maybe, just maybe, this hardly put together, smart mouthed, afraid to drop certain words in anyone's ears girl was fine with him.

She curled up on the couch with her knees tucked beneath her, ignoring the television and a book lying about in favor of silence. Silence was definitely preferred. Gave her time to think about what the hell she'd gotten herself into.

He had to admit having her here was that fine line between wonderful and absolutely terrifying, which in and of itself was a fun feeling to have. He had been out surveying the chaos the Master had caused, and if he was honest, he sort of missed the chap. Crazy as all get out but in that annoying chaotic way. And no one important had died which was a bit of a let down. He'd even sort of helped out the heroes once Watson had gone missing because no. Because Watson was a pawn in his game and Time Lord or no Time Lord, the Master should have known better. Still, he was dead now and they were all so happy about it, less happy about the stupid woman he'd taken with him into death but Jim expected Romana and all she had done was making his fairytale think about the future.

He found her in the front room, looking all content but just sitting there, not focused on anything in particular and probably lost in her own thoughts. She did that sometimes and he found it fascinating.

"Done being the hero are you?" he said, slipping his arms around her at her shoulders and placing a kiss on her head. "It was a good look on you. I was watching of course. Had people out there keeping an eye." And he knew how that must have looked, people out watching his fairytale, people he was paying. It looked weak. But of course he'd skinned the one or two people that had called him out on it and then they'd shut up. Weakness was in the eye of the beholder.

"But it's done. The bad man is dead and all the city rejoices. You know they'd feel that way if it was me, don't you?" he asked her, moving around to the couch to sit beside her. "Have you been thinking about that when you were out there with them? When you were fighting, when you were watching that woman of his. Do you think there's much of a difference between you and her?"

He took her by surprise, which was rare for Emma. Few snuck up on her. But despite herself, she did feel safe with him and in the house. Which had been his point all along, obviously, move in with him and guarantee her safety. But she smiled a little shyly at his touch, an odd expression for Emma that still looked somehow natural. Her hand drifted up to touch his face lightly, and then he spoke and... God, she didn't know.

She'd never set out to play the hero. She was just really, really tired of the madness running the city streets. "Of course it was a good look on me," she challenged, trying to sound flippant rather than worried. "Most things are. But badass? High up there."

Then Jim joined her on the couch and he was bringing up that day, that horrible day that could come. She knew it as well as anyone. The city could be celebrating his end, his death. And what side would she be on? Would she be mourning? Celebrating with them? Or, just maybe, would she be going the same way as Romana had? Caught in the middle of something she couldn't get out of until it was too late.

Romana had said Emma would make the choice if she really loved Jim. Would she? Because she did. No one would have stuck it out with him, with his smooth words and his mood swings and, of course, the crime, if they didn't love him. But how much? Enough to stand by and watch him destroy the people she was growing to care for?

"We don't have to worry about that," she finally decided firmly. "It's not going to come to that, them rejoicing. You won't be like him." He just wasn't going to die. That answered that part of the question, at least. "And I'm not her. I'm not a simpering idiot. I can stand by you and still have a spine of my own."

He knew it was hard for her. It wasn't hard to work that out and his dear fairytale didn't hide it particularly well. Not from him anyway, though there were very few people that could hide anything from Jim Moriarty. And less still willing to try. And bless her, she really was trying. She was trying to sound like it didn't get to her but he knew her too well. Getting close to her, making her see that all this, all the attempts at trying to remain honourable and good while living with a man like him. Oh no no, it wouldn't last and he didn't want to see her hurt when the bubble burst.

"Oh I won't" he agreed when she pointed out he wouldn't be like the Master. "I'll be smarter, and I'm not just saying that babe, I really will be. I don't do things out of any compulsion for chaos and discord around me. Look at the city, the criminal elements answer to me, I know how every single one of them operates and what they want. Here, Kansas City and everything in between. And that's not even me really trying. But eventually people will have to start dying. It's just going to happen, its a matter of when and how and who but it'll come to that because its the only way to draw him out, draw him into the case. You know that."

But no, he wanted her to be a good guy. He wanted her to be with him. He envied the Master that if he let himself admit to the emotion. Romana had stood with her man all the way. even died for it. It had been fabulous to watch. But he couldn't read it on Emma just yet. Would she stand by his side while her friends fell victim to his Final Problem. "It won't come to that and no, I'm not like him. I'm better. And you...oh darling if you were like her do you think I'd be with you, its that fire and passion that attracted me to you. I don't want you to lose it. I just want you to understand."

He matched her gaze finally, "You will stand by me though, won't you fairytale?"

He knew her too well, and that was a terrifying thing. Emma Swan didn't let anyone in. Ever. She'd tried, once, long ago. A little girl so desperate for a family to love her and raise her properly. She'd given so much of herself and been denied, time and again. The only family who'd really bothered trying had sent her back just as soon as they had a baby of their own. And that's where the trust was broken, that's where the walls were built, and a girl, not even old enough to remember most things, already knew she didn't want anyone piercing a tough exterior.

But he had. Damn him, he had, and she couldn't shake him. Maybe that's why she'd gone to him in the first place, despite knowing what he was and what part he'd eventually have to ask her to play. He'd already gotten too close. And maybe she needed to keep her friends close and her enemies closer. Maybe she was just so thankful someone had taken the time to get through the barriers she put up that she let him, even if it was him. Or maybe she was just so damned helpless against him when he turned on the charm. She might never know.

That stare of his was intense. It always was. Practiced and refined, she knew, and she also knew that he knew how it got to her. No one made eye contact like that anymore. But they should. Oh, they should. They'd get what they wanted a lot more easily if they did.

Emma released a slow breath and reached out, lightly touching his cheek. "You know I'm not going anywhere. Thought we decided that. I'm here, aren't I?" She gave a tiny little laugh. "Literally, it seems. You've got me. I made my choice, I've got to stand by it." Surely he knew what was off limits, though? No. No, he didn't. Jim had no limits. And she'd be lying if she said that didn't scare her, at least a little.

Of course she'd made her choice. And she'd made the right one so that was the important thing. She had moved in with him and you didn't just do that. More to the point he wouldn't just let anyone do that. Damn her. She'd gotten closer than he liked anyone getting but she'd done it somehow and now he wouldn't be as happy without her. Is that what love was? Oh he knew what she really wanted from him. She wanted the killing to stop. She wanted to be happy. And she could probably deal with the crime side of things but not the rest. Never quite the rest. Pity really as he had no intention of stopping it. And she'd go along with it if she really cared.

"Now you're not standing by it because you feel you have to? I know you don't like what I have to do. I've always known that. But you're clever enough to know that its not going to stop. But I don't involve you, do I? I'm more than happy for you to go and be a hero. Its what you enjoy isn't it? Did you get a rush out of it, out of them trusting you, fighting alongside them. I mean you were never in danger. I made sure of that, in more ways that one. But I know you. You liked it."

His little heroine. Maybe that was a part of her fairytale. Maybe that was how it started out before she started to fall. She would of course, but it would suit her down to the ground. They'd seen that in their future. That woman was everything she could become. "Look I'm never going to tell you not to be who you are, you know that. But I'm going to be who I am, and while I do that I'll keep you safe. I'll do whatever I need to to ensure it, you understand. And what's laid out in destiny is still going to happen. But right here and right now its just you and me, right? Nothing else should matter bar what we want to matter." The gaze hadn't flinched away from her. not once. "So here's where I ask you, what is it you want?"

Clever, maybe, but hopeful. Always hopeful. Emma never quite lost faith that she could change him. Oh, not completely. He had a passion and a drive that she wanted for him. But why did it have to manifest itself in a need to rid the city of...well, everyone? That brain of his...it could be such an asset. Oh, she wasn't blind. She knew it still was to him. And, if she was being honest, to her, too. He had everything anyone could ask for. And so did she.

"We've been over this, Jim. I can take care of myself, you know. I don't need you and yours tailing my every move." And letting her know they had been made her feel about two inches tall. What was the point? Why bother putting herself on the line if someone was just going to swoop in and finish the job if she messed up? It was frustrating.

If she had any idea where his head was, she'd have forced herself to walk out. She'd already promised herself, that woman was not going to be her. That Seal had allowed her to see that for a reason. She couldn't be that Emma. That was the one this city hated, far more than they hated her just for being Jim's little toy. Not that that's all she was. Maybe. It was so hard to call it. For a woman who made a living off of reading people, he was the hardest one of all.

Right here, right now, though... That she could manage. That was how Emma had lived her life every day for the majority of her life. "You know what I want. All I want is you. Whatever that entails, whatever it takes..." God, it was true, wasn't it? She'd put herself at risk, her friends at risk, and for what? For eyes that could hold hers for hours, for a smile so rare that every time it was given she felt it all the way through. And more...because he wanted more for her. He cared more than he should, they both knew it. She'd never had that effect on any man. How could she walk away now?

"Whatever happens, we're in it together now. There's not much I can do to change that. Even if I did leave you, nothing would ever be the same. So..." She finally glanced away, looking down at the space between them. "If that's the case, why deny myself?"

Emma Swan was becoming a walking contradiction. Even she saw it. And she had no idea how to stop it.

Oh he knew she could take care of herself, that wasn't in doubt. But he couldn't control the situations she got herself in. He couldn't know where she was or what danger she was getting herself in. So a few of his people kept an eye out. Looked out for the woman he'd fallen for, only told to intercede if she was in any real danger of being hurt. If it annoyed her it was a price he would pay to keep her alive. "I'm not going to stop them Emma, they need to be there just in case. You know how it is, I need you safe, and they'd never intervene unless you were going to get hurt. Do you know what losing you would cause? Things would...well they'd get much messier than an army of plastic people can cause."

It probably would be considered emotional blackmail what he did to her sometimes, things he said. He knew it was unfair, or at least he knew that it was perceived by people as such. People had such weird reactions to straightfoward things.

But then she told him he was all she wanted and oh did that feed the ego. He liked being the centre of attention. It was a well known fact, and coming from her. Well, Emma was one of two people he wanted to be constantly on the mind of. It meant a lot to him because he really had given himself to her, as much as he ever had done before. She wanted to be with him, she wanted to be in it together no matter what and that was all he needed from her. Oh eventually he'd have to test her. Probably by killing Jo. But she'd deal with it, she'd get past it because whatever happened, that's what she'd said.

"Don't you worry, if you're happy here then just think how much better it can get. You finding me Emma, that was fated, you do realise that don't you? And I'm a very big believer in fate and what it means. You are part of my world now, the parts you like and the parts you don't. And the parts you don't like. Well...you leave them to me. You don't have to involve yourself. You know that. I've never asked that of you, have I?"

He knew she was falling for him. He might even stretch to love, and it wasn't like the Master and that idiot woman of his. He didn't need Emma as part of his plan, he didn't use her as a distraction. God help him, he just sort of wanted her with him. It would have been so much easier for both of them without the pesky feelings stuff. And they both knew it.

Had he just admitted he'd unleash hell on this city if anything happened to her? Well. On the one hand, that was more than a little bit scary. And on the other, slightly more twisted hand, it was almost sweet. It was proof he cared, even if his level of caring was far more frightening than most.

And was it so bad, him wanting her safe? No, not really. Had anyone ever wanted her safe? Even she didn't care. Not since her father had put his own life on the line to save hers had anyone given a damn about what happened to Emma swan. Apparently even August had left her behind. In typical Pinocchio fashion. So why shouldn't she allow someone to keep an eye on her, just once? "You care that much if anything happens to me?" she challenged, unable to just accept that fact. Anywhere else, she could've just up and died and no one would've noticed. But not in Storybrook, and apparently not here. It was new. It was different. And...well, it was nice. She liked that feeling. She fed off of it, even, and that, despite knowing what he was, was how it was so easy for her to hang on to him.

She paused a minute, listening to him rattle on about fate and destiny and things she once wouldn't have bothered with. A younger Emma believed in making her own fate. Nothing was given to her, everything was earned and fought for. But now? Well, she was a child quite literally born of true love and sent to a world with the destiny of rescuing a tiny village of fairytale characters sometime after her twenty-eighth birthday. How could she not believe in fate with a history like that behind her? Maybe it was fated that she'd be investigating an embezzlement case on the same morning the Seal decided to bring Jim Moriarty into town. Maybe she really was destined for him. Maybe, just maybe, she could save him. And that's why he'd landed in her life.

She moved closer, then, easing herself into his lap so she could press her lips gently against his. Damn her, she'd gone and fallen and hard. There was no getting out of it, and there was no easy way to deal with it all. "I'm meant to be in your life. I know that. We'll work out all the rest. However we have to." She hesitated, tempted to ask him, just once, why. Why he had to kill Sherlock at all, why he had to kill any of them, and why wasn't she enough for him. But it was the same talk they always had so instead, she just kissed him again, a little less sweetly and a bit more firmly.

Well look at that. His fairytale accepting her place in his life, he couldn't have asked for a better outcome from all this. Let her play the hero when she wanted, she'd get annoyed but find it adorable or something that he had people watching out for her. And why would he not? He'd gotten used to having her with him, she was a balance for when things got messy, when a plan didn't go like he'd planned, when things just got that bit too stressy. Rather than his usual trick of killing things that offended him, maybe he could just be there with his dear fairytale and things would be better.

She was a muse sometimes, much as he knew ever calling her that would bother her.

He knew of course, how much his Final Problem bothered her. She'd love a life with him without the killing, without the control he needed to give himself over his surroundings, over the city and the criminal element within. They all answered to him now and it hadn't even taken him as long as it had in London, of course they were Americans so he supposed that made some sense. But then he'd gone and fallen for one too hadn't he... No though, no she was a Princess, a Princess that had fallen through the seal and then walked into his life. That made more sense to him.

"Of course you're meant to be with me. You're starting to see aren't you? How it all pulls together. Every little strand, every little bit of the puzzle all coming together. I didn't want to have to redo it all darling, not from the start but I had to. Then I found you here, and then it pulled him here and maybe that's how its really supposed to be. ...When he's gone, you'll be my only focus, and you'll continue to live like the Princess you are, wouldn't you like that?" He kissed her back of course, wondering with a slight smile against her lips how Sherlock did without this side of life, there was a thrill to it, and a whole other level of trust. Because she trusted him, much as she sometimes didn't want to. Even still. But he was getting her there.

Oh he'd have to kill her friends. Probably Jo. But that was for later. After Sherlock. When like he'd said, she'd be his entire world.

Did she want to be a princess? It was a question that had bothered her since the day she'd arrived in Lawrence and discovered via television what she really was. Who she really was. And she'd watched her story play out, watched her history unfold before her eyes. Some kids got tales of how their parents fell in love; Emma got to see it with her own eyes. And it was a little awkward, seeing not only her future but her past, but it was helpful. She wasn't some baby just abandoned and left for dead. She'd been given a chance to live and to save the rest of her world as well.

But was that a life she wanted? She'd spent twenty-eight years learning survival. Learning to make do with what she had and to furnish an apartment on thirty dollars. She'd grown accustomed to meals of Ramen and Campbell's and Burger King. If she had grown up as Princess Emma, the adored first daughter of Charming and Snow, then maybe it would be a different story. Maybe she'd be used to being the spoiled girl Jim was attempting to turn her into. But she was still all fire and feisty mannerisms and he'd deal with it or he'd move on.

She really, really didn't want him to move on, though. And she wanted to kick herself for that.

"I won't ever be your only focus, though," she pointed out quietly, meeting his eyes as she pulled back, just a bit. "Even with him gone, you've got...business to run." And, potentially, that future she was fighting so hard to prevent. She couldn't be his entire world, not if they brought a little girl into it. But that was so far in the future that she refused to even acknowledge it to herself, let alone out loud. "Besides, who would want one person as their only focus? Jim... Anything could happen." She'd seen enough people taken by the Seal, killed by the things here, people who just up and left. There were never any guarantees. Hell, there weren't even guarantees back home, why should there be here in the land of the crazy?

She was scared to lose him. But he wouldn't be the first thing that left her, if he did, and she'd survive. If she got pulled, though... If something happened to her? What then?

Oh business, that was adorable. Really it was. "Oh please, I can do that in my sleep. They really do line up to worship me, you have no idea. And the ones that don't, run. Or die, but you know, natural selection and all that. I suppose I'll need to expand eventually but one thing at a time, y'know." he told her, still focused entirely on her even as she pulled back from him. He'd had one person as his only focus for a while now. One person that matched his intellect, awoke his curiousity, a person who could maybe, maybe just beat him at his own game. It was a pity really that he was proving so dreadfully boringly ordinary. He'd have to step things up soon. He'd give it some time, let things settle from the chaos the Master had left, and then the targets would start to get targeted. No kidnappings, nothing so dull.

Sherlock deserved better.

He kissed her again, in a moment where he needed to find focus before plans overtook his mind, wheels within wheels, turning and twisting down a long path to an even longer fall. "It's going to be beautiful you know, and I understand, you don't want it. You want me, without the vendetta, without needing to see him die. But it has to happen. I have to make him fall. And darling, I'll do it, because I know exactly what makes that man tick. I know who to hurt and precisely how. And when its done, and when he falls...well..."

It was like a symphony in his mind, he couldn't help it. But for now, he needed her to focus on him which meant putting the plans away for now.

"Nothing will happen to you. Or the city will burn. Do you understand, slowly and painfully, they'll all just...go. And I'll start with Lucifer's favourite chew toy. And keep at it until you come back to me." Of course he'd do the same if the blasted thing took Sherlock before he saw the great man fall. But she didn't need to know that. She just needed to know that there was nothing he wouldn't do to have her.

"Now!" he said his expression going from dangerous to excitable in seconds. "We have dinner, we have an entire evening to do whatever we might want with it. Any ideas Miss Swan?"

Oh, Emma knew about his one person focus. And she knew it wasn't her. That could be a bit scary, too. What happened when that was all over? Would he turn on her? Realize she was just a way to pass the time? Or would he simply become as, quite frankly, obsessed with her as he had been with Sherlock? Oh, sure, she'd accused him of stalking before. Of being way too caught up with her. But that was before she'd gone and fallen in love with him. Now she knew what she wanted and she was afraid of it being taken away. Again. The world somehow always knew what to take away from her.

"I don't care what happens to Sherlock," she told him, which was only a half truth. Because Sherlock's fall meant bigger things. It meant a city full of angry displaced people. It meant them going after him, stopping him. Wanting him dead, just as they had the Master. Plenty of people filtered her out, but not everyone. Not from everything. And she saw things, things that scared her more than she wanted to admit. It really would be them one day. Whether he defeated Sherlock or not. And if he did, well...then they'd want justice.

And again, choosing a side would come into play. So many of them had already chosen her side for her. Could she actually change that now?

And while she doubted he had the power to tell Lucifer what to do, and she wasn't even sure Lucifer had power over the Seal...she couldn't deny it was kind of nice (in a twisted sort of way) to know he'd quite literally tear apart hell and earth to get her back. If that wasn't love? Hell, what was?

Then he was doing his manic thing, where his mood changed so quickly she actually had to pause to follow along. Emma gave a little smile when he was obviously in a much better mood. Much easier to contend with this Jim. She actually stood a chance with this one. "Up to you, isn't it? I came home tonight to make sure I got time with you. So...your choice. I'm all yours, no interruptions." A slight smirk crossed her face and she trailed a lazy finger down his jawline. "All yours."

And she really was. Her social calendar wasn't exactly hopping and she'd wrapped up her most recent case just before the plastic people joined the Lawrence party. But he didn't need to know that.

She didn't care what happened to Sherlock. But he did. Of course he did and his fairytale knew that all too well, didn't she. And he didn't care what it took to get them there or who he had to hurt along the way but Sherlock Holmes would have his fall. There was no disputing that. There never would be. And of course people would try to stop him. Or come after them if he did manage to do it. But it was all part of the plan. It all played into what was to come. Because there was nothing they could do to stop it. All puppets in the grand scheme of things. Weak little puppets.

Not her though. He wouldn't be with her if she was weak. Oh she was malleable in a lot of ways. He could give her what she wanted, what she'd always needed. Someone to be there for her. Someone to love her. Someone that would tear apart heaven and hell to keep her safe. Protected. She didn't like being the girl in the glass cage. That's what she said. But she did. She liked it even if she wouldn't quite admit it to herself yet. And he wasn't going to tell her any different.

"You get time with me whenever you want it darling? You know how it works." But oh, no interruptions. And it was true. It was just the two of them and he suspected Emma liked it that way. That and he liked when she said home. And she was being oh so delightfully minxy at him, which he had to admit he was fond of. "You are aren't you? All mine." His eyes seemed to light up at the concept. He liked things being his. He liked possessions, he was always so fascinated by the whole idea of someone that was just for him. He'd finally gone and gotten a live in one. And they were just so interesting.

"Well then dinner can wait can't it?" he said, pulling her toward him forcefully. "Dinner can wait until later. That's what you want isn't it fairytale?" he more told her than asked before pulling her back into a kiss.

Maybe she did long for comfort. Maybe she did want to know the option of being protected was there. But she still had her mother's spark, that fire that refused to be put out by anyone, no man and no authority figure. Oh, she'd turn to him if she needed him. But at his side. She refused to be locked away. If that was the case, she'd have sat back in the comfort of his home, their home, and allowed the rest of the community of displaced people to do the hard work in ending the autons. She'd done a good deal of the research, they couldn't say she hadn't helped. But her independent streak insisted she go out there and be physically involved. Because she could. Because she was damn good with a gun and pretty damn good with a punch and why shouldn't she? She'd done the work, why should they all benefit without her?

She didn't want to be just a possession, but he knew that. And he indulged her, if nothing else. Oh, he enjoyed having her. That was obvious. In the dominating way he held her to the gleam in his eyes when he looked at her. She liked that gleam. She liked knowing she'd caused it. And okay, while she'd always preferred to be in charge of the few relationships she'd had, she couldn't deny enjoying those moments where he took complete control.

She let him pull her closer, meeting his eyes deeply. Not breaking contact, she slipped a leg over his lap, straddling him in order to take his face in her hands. "Who said I didn't want dinner?" she taunted, her voice low and rough, as minxy as he wanted her to be. "I'd have to get changed, though. Can't possibly go out in this. How could you even be seen with me?"

And she knew he liked that part, at least a little. Emma wasn't shy about that. She knew she was good looking enough. Maybe even pretty. Dressed up, she made good arm candy. And made him look just that much better. They had the potential to be a power couple. They had been in that future. Everyone looked up to them.

Everyone in crime, anyway. And that wasn't how she wanted it. That wasn't how it was going to be. It couldn't.

Oh he did. He liked that he had his very own fairytale, and how good she looked on his arm when he took her out to the city. She truly was beautiful, but she was strong besides, and willful. And he wondered sometimes if he'd have her any other way. And she wanted him enough that she overlooked the crime, she'd even accepted that sometimes there needed to be other women, ones he'd wine and dine to make them do what he needed. Oh she'd drawn her line in the sand on that regard and he'd even held to it so far, planning just not to tell her if he crossed it. But he shouldn't need to, and he didn't want to, but needs must and all that.

But him and her really could be the best this town had ever seen, and he didn't know if she really knew that yet. Did she know that the life they'd seen was within their reach, that they could have that if they wanted? That they could live like Kings and be feared by everyone. But she didn't want it even if she did realize. She wanted that little girl, but not in the way they'd had her. Aurora had been adorable though, so full of potential.

"You can get changed." he told her, "Get all dressed up if you like but you know how much I like being seen with you. It's fun watching people react, isn't it darling." he added, pulling her into a kiss that very plainly told her just what he wanted to do with the evening. "We can go out. But the dinner will keep if I say it will, I mean, who would dare question me if I say hold off another night." If they went out, he'd be all business, oh Emma and the...whatever her name was, wife, wouldn't get involved in the talks. He was fairly sure the wife didn't know just how far in her husband was, she didn't need to. But then the wheels would start turning, his mind would start burning with ideas and plans and it would take him some time to wind down. It always did.

He didn't ever deny he loved the power, the control he had on the organized crime in this city. It had taken him a while. He'd had to build it up all over again. But now, they didn't make a move in this town unless he said so. Unless he told them precisely what they were and weren't allowed do. He didn't do that with Emma, she wouldn't have tolerated it, and he wouldn't have liked her as much if she did. So this decision would rest with her. "It's up to you" he told her with a deceptively soft smile. "How will we spend the evening?"

She would be lying if she said that being out in the city, watching people watching them, didn't give her a little thrill. It was pathetic and she knew that. But those people, criminals though they may be, they respected him. They looked up to him. And to see them seeing him with her... Well. It certainly put most of the women in the city in their places. Those who thought they stood a chance. Those who wanted to get his attention for nothing more than his money or notoriety. If only she could deal with his little vampire friend, she'd be set.

But Emma didn't always want to be out in public, showing off. Him being out often led to too many things. Conversations she didn't want to overhear or news stories she wished she didn't know about. Keeping him in had multiple benefits. She couldn't always pull it off. Seducing him wasn't exactly difficult, but it only worked so often. But every time she could keep just one more person alive, one more attacker from getting their orders... Well. Why shouldn't she? And she got her man in the end, so why not?

It was good that he knew, though. That he understood that he couldn't control her. Much as she'd never try to force him. He knew where she stood and what she wanted. They both had a mutual understanding, though, that things could only go as far as the other wanted. She knew that in his heart he so badly wanted her to swallow down the insecurities and the fears and officially take her place at his side. To become that woman he had seen, the one willing to take a man down with a single shot. And she could. Oh, Emma could. She was skilled and talented, and it was sometimes easy for her to see how that other version of her had embraced her darker side. But she'd fought it off for so long, how could she even consider it now?

That smile, though... Deceptive, yes, but not lost on her. Because she read people. Not as well as his precious Sherlock, no, but she knew signs. And she knew how wicked that smile could actually be. And she knew she'd won, at least this evening.

"What's so great about food anyway?" she murmured, meeting his lips again. Her hands drifted slightly, loosening his tie and finding the top button of his shirt so they could make their way to his skin. It shouldn't have been so easy. If he weren't so damned good to her, she could have walked away. But it wasn't that simple. And yes, it had lost her the respect of most people in the city. But... "I love you," she whispered against his mouth, then pulled back, surprise in her eyes.

She hadn't meant to say that. Not really. Oh, they'd been dancing around it for quite some time. But to actually hear those words, out in the open? Impossible to pull back, impossible to delete or backspace? And there wasn't a damn thing she could do about it.

He had been enjoying the whole night. Having her all over him, putting off his business so he could keep his fairytale happy. All things he was willing to do, knowing full well how much she hated what he did. Hated the things he had to do. Oh she accepted it in him but she hadn't crossed that line with him yet, and he didn't know if she ever would. Seeing that possible future had bothered her more than she'd let on even to him, but he could see it. He could read her in those moments when she didn't think he was paying attention. He was always paying attention, if she didn't know that yet then who knew what would come of it. He didn't expect what she said though, of all the things he could have said back it all went from his head. And she was there, teasing him, draped over him and he couldn't pull away. Couldn't run from that damn word.

It meant a lot to her to have said it. But hearing her say it, he didn't quite know what to make of it. Or more to the point what he could possibly say back. Did he love her? Could he love anyone. It was such a ridiculous concept in so many ways. But then again, there she was, ready to say it and sitting where she was he wasn't above saying it back but he supposed it really was the kind of thing one should mean. Now there was the big question. He could say it sure, but could he mean it.

He blinked. Just once and raised his hand to her face, cupping it around her cheek. "Say that again?" he asked her, eyes dark and focused on her as ever. "Tell me you love me, knowing who I am, what I do. Knowing that it won't stop. Knowing that they'll hate me and start to hate you. Because you're here with me. Do you understand?" He kissed her again, still keeping his eyes on her and spoke, slowly, the same danger in his voice that many feared but Emma had begun to understand. "Say that again?"

If she answered well then there was that. There was more to it than just words and then he could think about what to tell her back. Because right now he couldn't think. Couldn't focus and it wasn't a feeling he liked one bit. He didn't know his next move. Is that what love was, blind stumbles in the dark with no real right or wrong answer. It was nothing he could plan for.

The things this woman did to him. How had he let her get to his heart this much. Well, suppose it was proof he had one.

If he thought he was shocked by what she'd said, he had nothing on her. Emma hadn't planned on it. Though she'd known there was a chance, she knew how she felt, she hadn't been ready. Not yet. She'd honestly never said that to anyone. Most kids could at least say they'd said it to their parents, to a loving mom or dad. Or a sibling, maybe. Even a pet. Emma hadn't had those chances. She'd never even said it to Henry, knowing from the beginning she was going to give him up. Easier to not get attached if she pretended she didn't give a damn about the tiny life growing inside of her.

But now she had. Now she'd said it and the words were out there and there wasn't a damn thing she could do except play it off and slip out and maybe lock herself in the shower for a month. Except she couldn't, because her face was in his hand and he was giving her that look. And she wasn't going anywhere. He wanted a repeat performance, apparently. Could she?

She had to. She had to be as honest with him as she'd finally been with herself. What she'd told him was only the truth. Nothing in her life was ever going to be the same again, even if she walked away now. Some people could never accept her after the choices she'd made. She may as well allow herself this, if she could. "I do," she whispered, the sound almost hesitant. But not quite. Emma couldn't hesitate once her mind was made up. "I do love you. Damn if I haven't tried not to. But I do."

Her eyes closed, finally blocking out that steady stare. She felt a little nauseous, admittedly, but at least it was said and done. If he was done with her over this... Well, she'd slap him, first of all. All the damn times he'd tried to make her say it, if he turned his back on her now, he'd deserve at least that.

"Maybe it's not the smartest thing I've ever done. But good things have come out of a lot of the stupid decisions in my life. And I have to hope the same can be said here." When she finally looked back up at him, it wasn't with fear in her eyes but resignation. Whatever happened now, there was nothing she could do about it.

Love. She loved him. It was a ridiculous messy complicated thing to do and he wasn't going to say it back, was he? It would be weakness like he'd never shown before, Did she want him to stop? She had to know the ridiculousness of that happening. This was who he was. But god help him she was in it, she'd found her way from a fun little project to someone he'd actually gone and let inside and dangerous as it was having her there. Well, she'd never hindered him in doing what he did. And she'd tried not to feel what she felt as much as he had, as much as he still did sometimes.

She repeated the words and he nodded just once, letting his hand move from its grip. "You know words like that don't get taken back. You've said it, so you're in. Long haul, no matter what, no matter how this ends, you're with me because you love me, and I let you because..."

God, how did people do this? Say this? It wasn't natural. It was dangerous, so dangerous. He said that, it made Emma a weapon to be used against him. And he knew exactly how easy it was to do. "Saying it Emma, you know what that means, for you, for me. For everything I have to do. They will come at you, they will use you. They would hurt you because it would hurt me. And if I say it, it means that any attack on you would hurt me. And its so dangerous. You have no idea how easily exploitable love is. The things people do for love darling, the things people do for this stupid, biological...thing. But I'm not just...I'm not saying this because I don't. I think I do. I think I actually love you and isn't that just weird!"

He finally looked away from her, laughing more than anything, he didn't know where to go from here. So exposed, so dammed exposed. It was the most ridiculous thing, and no, not safe. Not at all safe. "Can I just drag you to the bedroom now, fairytale, all the feelings out in the open I just need..." If he was honest, control. He just needed control back, because with words, just words, she'd managed to completely undo him. With an almost frantic desperation in the movement he wrapped his hands around her wrists and pulled her toward him to kiss her. "The things you do to me Emma Swan."

She didn't want to take them back, though. Now that she'd accepted it, now that he knew for sure she meant it, it was getting easier to deal with. She could relax a little, almost breathe properly again. The waves that had made themselves at home in her stomach were starting to ease. And whether he could admit it or not, she knew how he felt. Which is why his little tirade didn't bother her.

Gently, she brushed his hair off of his face, smiling softly. "You don't have to say it out loud for it to happen. You'll always feel it. You've already told me, you just told me that if anything happened to me, you'd tear apart Heaven and hell. Do you think that's not love?"

And then he said it, and she wasn't entirely sure because it was just...out there. His manic nature had pulled it out in an almost random moment, but she had definitely heard it. And she knew, the second she did, that she wanted to hear it again. And again and again and however many times she could until the Seal took one of them, or until one of them was killed, whether in this stupid war or against his own idiotic fight with Sherlock.

So she didn't argue when he used a little more force than necessary to get that kiss out of her. In fact, she made it slow and deliberate. She allowed herself to tease him a little, make him work for it. There'd never been any doubt he wanted her. But now he wanted all of her, more than just her body and more than just someone to have at his side. He wanted her as her. And it was incredible. Like a damned drug she couldn't get enough of and that? That was the real reason this was dangerous. But again, not saying it wouldn't make it untrue.

A tiny smirk crossed her face. She couldn't say she'd won, not really. Not when she was just as scared of this as he was. But it did feel like a victory, somehow, peeling off yet another layer of the illusive Jim Moriarty. And she liked it. When his mouth finally released hers, she leaned in to whisper in his ear. "You do that, my love. You drag me to the bedroom and you'll see just what it is I can do to you." He did, after all, deserve a reward.
