Somewhere in between reeling from the encounter with Logan, getting surprised by future versions of their daughters and now Molokov's arrival, Anatoly had very little time to digest much. Nadiya's existence told him that there was hope that he and Svetlana could work out their issues. Of course it was entirely possible that their road could take a sudden turn and lead to a different future, but he was focusing the best he could on the hopeful future. Because that was better than just looking at the possibility of a bleak future, of losing his family forever. And he had been in this place long enough to know that anything could happen and nothing was set in stone until it had all ready come to pass. But he also knew any glimmer of hope that they could get in this place should be held onto because there was far too much darkness and depression in this world. He was still processing Nadiya's existence, but he was going to hold onto that future. Anatoly, however, knew better than to vocalize such hopes, especially now, to Svetlana. Perhaps when they were at a more stable point in their relationship, but not now.
Oh Svetlana was definitely not the only one who was hating having to talk about this now. Anatoly did feel bad for the timing, but it wasn't like they had much of a choice in the matter. If they didn't try to discuss it now, they probably wouldn't discuss it, and then Molokov would have a far easier time in breaking them apart. But who even knew if they could survive this talk now? With Svetlana as exhausted and worn out emotionally as he knew she was, this discussion would run the risk of breaking her further. Which was the last thing Anatoly wanted to do, but he also knew it was inevitable given the things that needed to talk about. Sooner or later, they would have this discussion and it would hurt no matter how gently they tried to approach the topic. He well knew every word he had to say would be another dagger to Svetlana's heart, but it hurt him just as much to know that. As much as he wanted to damage control the situation, Anatoly knew the only way to do that would be to just go through the talk, and then after everything was out, move on from there.
Anatoly remained seated when Svetlana stood and moved to the window. Was that the truth? Had he defected because he was bored? Perhaps he had been, in a way. He had been hating where he was, wanting more than he all ready had. But bored wasn't the correct word for what he'd felt at the time. Not that he had even felt much at the time, but that wasn't the issue currently at hand.
"Bored is not the right word for it. I wanted more than what I had, and more and more it seemed the West could give me that. But all I found was strained acceptance." He looked over at Svetlana. "Greed is the better way to describe it." Pride was a horrible monster, and oh how it had consumed him. It had been relatively easy to combat that monster in this world. Molokov hadn't been here to fuel his pride, and once he'd started reconnecting with his emotions, Svetlana and their daughters, the lure of fame had faded. It also helped that he was mistaken for that Josh Groban to keep him from wanting to go back to chess as a competitor. So he was rather thankful, for once, that fame was all but inaccessible in this world. It left him to find the root of the man he had once been and try to grow strong again with his family.
