Doreah nodded in agreement regarding the food in Kansas, smiling with a look in her eyes that showed she really was amazed by something as simple as the food available in Lawrence. She was not innocent, but being someplace so different from the world she’d come from brought out an almost childlike curiosity and amazement in her. It was refreshing to be in such a place. “You can find all sorts of things at the markets.” She took another bite of apple, relishing the sweet fruit.
When asked if she was new, Doreah gave another nod. She was trying her best to assimilate into the local culture, but imagined that there were still things about her that would give her away. Until weeks ago she hadn’t been able to use a computer and her manner of dress was still a little different from what was mainstream.
“I haven’t been here very long at all. It’s a nice enough place, from what I’ve seen.”
