Who: Doreah and Isabela
What: Doreah is hanging out after a trip to a local grocery store.
Where: The complex kitchen
When: Late afternoon, Jan 10th
Status: Incomplete

What a strange and wonderful place Kansas had turned out to be! Doreah felt a natural longing for more familiar places, of course. It seemed that everyone who had been taken from their home had that feeling if only to a minimal degree, but Kansas was starting to grow on her. It was nice not to have to ride horseback day after day and in this place she could bathe in warm water any time she felt like doing so. Though she missed certain faces, this was not the worst of places and she had been reassured that many people were sent back to their proper places after a certain time had passed.

Doreah lounged, sitting on the counter in the community kitchen. Chik-fil-a had delicious food to offer, but the local food markets could boast the same. She had returned from her visit to the grocery market with a small selection of fruit, a bottle of wine, and small cups of something called ‘Jello’ that she had never heard of before in her lifetime. Using a paring knife she had found in a drawer, Doreah cut a yellowish apple into spears, popping one into her mouth and munching on it delightedly. It was well worth the paper currency she had used to pay for the fruit.

Despite only being back on dry land for a couple days, Isabela was all ready missing the sea again. It was natural since she considered the ocean her home, and she always felt incomplete when on dry land. This was, of course, when she wasn't busy pursuing pleasures of the flesh on dry land. But despite her missing the sea, she felt truly at peace for the first time in...well, a long time. To anyone else she'd claim she hadn't felt peace in four years, since she'd last been at sea. But the truth was she'd felt peace with Hawke, though she'd never admit such a thing. After all, she was moving on from that business. Matters of the heart were messy and Isabela wanted nothing to do with them.

Things were at least quiet for the moment, so Isabela should take advantage of that. Maker only knew when the next plan of mass destruction would hit them and chaos would ensue. At least now she had her ship, so she could escape the chaos if she really wanted to. And given she usually did run in times of chaos, she'd undoubtedly do just that if things got too tough. Or if those blasted Qunari came through the seal. Then she'd start running again and never stop. She really didn't want to die, and she well knew the Qunari would kill her if they found her.

Making her way towards the kitchen, Isabela was going to see if there was anything interesting to eat. She still found the food in this place strange at times, and at others it seemed almost like the food from her world. Stepping into the kitchen, Isabela noticed the other woman sitting on the counter. Well, interesting place to sit. She smiled.

"Hello there," she greeted, making her way over to the fridge and pulling it open. Pursing her lips a bit, she scanned the contents for anything interesting looking. To go along with her new-found inner peace, she was wearing her normal outfit of a corset, nearly non-existent skirt and thigh high boots. Her neck was encased in the ornate gold pice she usually wore, which matched her earrings and labret piercing. Though for the moment, she wasn't carrying a single weapon on her, which was strange, but she'd gotten used to not needing to be armed inside the complex. But for all intensive purposes, she appeared every bit the pirate. And contrary to popular belief, the gold she wore was not stolen. It was the only thing of her heritage that she tended to wear. And technically her skin color gave away her country of origin, but no one in this world knew that, which was just fine with her.

“Hello,” She gave a smile. This woman who had only just walked into the kitchen had already caught Doreah’s attention. Her gait and manner of dress alone suggested that she was a woman who had interesting stories to tell.

“Care for a piece?” Doreah held out a spear of the apple she had been snacking on. She was learning that conversation in Kansas was much less formal than that in the places she had been prior to her arrival. So many men had refused to let her call them ‘ser’ that she assumed this woman wouldn’t want to be referred to as a lady. It still mystified her, but she was adjusting nonetheless. After a brief moment, she considered that it might be the proper time to introduce herself.

“I’m Doreah.” She gave a nod of her head, smiling amiably with the introduction.

Oh Isabela had many interesting stories to tell. A lot of them revolved around sex, but she had plenty of tales about treasure and daring the high seas. There were also less savory ones that she would only tell under duress.

At the question, Isabela looked and saw the woman holding out an apple spear to her. "Ah, thanks." Closing the fridge, she stood up right and took the spear, taking a bite of it. "I have to say, the food in this place is quite interesting." A lot of things were the same as in her world, but there were some dishes here that she could've sworn she'd seen back in Thedas. Course the ones here had different names, but they looked similar. Perhaps Thedas really wasn't that different from this world. Providing one ignored the dragons, elves, dwarves and other magical beings that weren't in this place.

"I'm Isabela, it's a pleasure to meet you. You're new around here, yes?" Isabela didn't always pay attention to the boards, but she did have a good idea of who was around the complex. Doreah wasn't among them. At least not yet.

Doreah nodded in agreement regarding the food in Kansas, smiling with a look in her eyes that showed she really was amazed by something as simple as the food available in Lawrence. She was not innocent, but being someplace so different from the world she’d come from brought out an almost childlike curiosity and amazement in her. It was refreshing to be in such a place. “You can find all sorts of things at the markets.” She took another bite of apple, relishing the sweet fruit.

When asked if she was new, Doreah gave another nod. She was trying her best to assimilate into the local culture, but imagined that there were still things about her that would give her away. Until weeks ago she hadn’t been able to use a computer and her manner of dress was still a little different from what was mainstream.

“I haven’t been here very long at all. It’s a nice enough place, from what I’ve seen.”

Seeing that look in Doreah's eye reminded her of the look Merrill always had when she was curious about something, which had been very often. "You really can. I have to say, some of the things sold in the markets here are, well, not to my taste, but for the most part it's all fascinating. I personally enjoy the differences to the world I'm from. Well, the good differences." Though that really went without saying. The chaos wasn't something new to her, nor was the threat of demons new. These were just vastly different demons from the ones she'd encountered in her own world. And this whole Apocalypse thing was definitely not to Isabela's liking. Anything that involved her dying at some point was not good.

"If you can ignore the periodic states of insanity and attacks, it is a decent place. Could be closer to the sea, though. But sadly, you can't always get everything you want." Isabela shrugged a bit, taking another bite of the apple. It was easy to tell that Doreah was from a different culture. Isabela had adopted some of the clothing from this world, but considering she was just coming off her first high seas adventure in four years, she'd reverted back to her own world's style of dress. "How are you adjusting?"

“Attacks?” Doreah tilted her head slightly, eyebrows just a bit wrinkled with a mixture of curiosity and concern. “I suppose it does make sense.” She nodded, answering her own question. “I’ve heard this apocalypse described as a war.” The time she’d spent in Lawrence, presumably safe in the apartment complex, had been peaceful. Thus far she had no complaints, though she imagined that her situation might change with time. It seemed that just about anything could change with time.

“Well enough,” She answered with a smile. “I was lucky enough to arrive with gold on me. The apartments are free, but very little else is. As for customs...” Doreah let out a sigh and shrugged her shoulders a bit. “I have some learning to do.”

“You mentioned the sea,” That curious look had returned. “Have you been on a ship before?” There was a trace of a smile on her face. In Lys, she’d heard stories of adventures on the sea. She had traveled over the water only once, the trip from Lys to her new life with the Dothraki people, but she’d enjoyed it a great deal. The sound of the waves, the saltwater mist on one’s skin... She wanted to experience it all again.

"It is a war of sorts, just not the kind fought on battlefields with armies." Or in cities with an invading army, but that was beside the point. "Just try to be prepared for anything. There isn't just fighting that happens. Take a few months back, some of us were thrusted into an alternate reality of the one we were from." Isabela grew thoughtful for a moment remembering the alternate Thedas she'd found herself in. How different she'd been there. She'd been honorable, a word that she never would use to describe herself as she currently was.

"Gold? Ha, good for you. I didn't have any. Well, I had a priceless relic on me when I arrived, but it's pretty worthless in this world." She quickly focused herself on the statement of learning customs to forget about the Qunari book that was still sitting in her room and the memories of what she'd left behind her. "You aren't the only one. It's definitely a strange place. But if you go out and people-watch in a park or something, you get the hang of it quite quickly."

Oh the sea, one of Isabela's favorite topics and it showed in the way her eyes started to sparkle. "I have. I'm a pirate. Or rather I was in my world. Was a captain until my ship ran aground while escaping from a ship full of unhappy Qunari. Most of my men died. Poor sods." There was a bit of a sad undertone, but four years after the fact, she'd gotten a little better about that fact. Though she still missed them all. "Have you ever been on a ship?"

The idea of an alternate reality puzzled Doreah. She suspected that it was something she would only understand if she’d experienced it herself. It did trigger her imagination into action, though. Everything about Lawrence Kansas was amazing and different and she expected it would only become more so during her time spent there.

People watching sounded like sound advice. Since her trip shopping Doreah had mastered the garb and fashion trends of this society. She could manage sitting on a bench in the park without catching much notice. At least now she wasn’t clothed in Dothraki fashion. She imagined she would be less of an eye sore in denim and a t-shirt.

“A pirate!” Doreah could not help but grin. She had met pirates, though none of them had been women. According to what she’d heard it was a life filled with equal parts peril and adventure. She’d listened to the stories with her full attention so long as the men would speak.

“I have, though not as you have.” She explained in regards to her time spent on the ship. “The crew preferred me to stay below deck so that I wouldn’t interfere in any way, but the waves...” Doreah smiled dreamily, creating a picture in her mind of the ocean.

The pirate queen was still uneasy about just how utterly random things seemed to happen in this place. Not all of them were evil, either. Take those bauble things for instance. It had given her her ship back. There was no end to the contentment Isabela felt at having The Srien's Call back where she belonged. Course the ship was currently in a bottle sitting on her coffee table, but it could take her to sea whenever she wanted it to. And now she had a failsafe way to escape from the crazy that tended to happen here if things got too hot for her liking. She always did have a backdoor exit if she needed it. There was no sense in risking her neck for the plight of others. Hawke had tried to change her views on that, and the woman had actually managed to do so. But Isabela rather liked pretending she didn't have a heart and was shallow.

The fashion Earth had to offer was odd, but Isabela found she did like it. She usually kept to skirts, specifically short skirts, when she dressed in the native attire of this place. She'd found pants were too confining for her liking, and she needed the ease of movement should she find herself in an unexpected battle. Ease of movement was sometimes the difference between life or death. And Isabela far preferred life.

Grinning, Isabela nodded. "Yep, a pirate." Isabela did wonder if pirates were all the same regardless of the world others were from. Adventure and danger on the high seas. Treasure hunting. Indulging in the pleasure land had to offer when they docked to restock. Oh the stories she had about all of those, and then some.

"Below deck? Now that's just not fun. Being up on deck is the best part!" The way Doreah said 'waves' made Isabela smile. "Right? There's nothing better than the open ocean. My favorite part is being on the open sea during a storm. It can be a bloody nightmare to navigate through, but the way the waves toss the ship and the wind pushes the sails. Oh, that is pure ecstacy." Now it was Isabela that had a dreamy smile. She'd have to get her ship out on the seas again sometime and find a storm to navigate through. She missed that feeling.

Doreah enjoyed her life for the most part, but found herself a little envious of Isabela’s calling as a pirate. Images popped into her mind of adventures and stolen treasure. She imagined that Isabela would never let some man stick her below deck, away from the real excitement. She’d only had this one conversation with Isabela and already found herself admiring the pirate. It amazed her, to a degree.

“It sounds wonderful.” She grinned. Doreah had no experience to draw images from, but her imagination created vivid imagery on its own. The torrential rain slapping down on the deck, the waves tossing the ship around though not so much as to capsize it... It sounded so exciting. She wished that she could live through such a thing.

“The treasures you must have found!” Doreah had decided in this short time that she would have more conversations with Isabela. Surely there were more stories to be told than could be told in the span of an hour or two.

Isabela was proud of her life as a pirate. Sailing the open seas was freedom, and after her horrendous marriage, she wasn't going to be tied down anywhere as long as she could help it. The sea was her home because out there, there were no laws save those that guided pirates, and there was no one to force her into doing things she didn't want to do. And with Doreah's interest in the subject, Isabela was all ready liking her.

"It is, for the most part. It's not all fun and games, though. There are some unsavory things out there." As with everything, there were down sides to being on a ship in the middle of the sea. Especially when there was one woman on board a ship full of sex-starved men. Isabela commanded her men with an iron fist, but it was sometimes difficult to keep them in line when they hadn't seen a woman in months, save for her and Isabela didn't exactly dress to cover up her assets.

"Oh there are many I've found, sweet thing." Isabela grinned. "There is, of course, more than one definition of treasure. Not everything I've found or stolen has been of the shiny variety." And of course, Isabela had no qualms relating the stories. The only one she'd edit, if she told it, was the one about the Book of Koslun, the Qunari relic she'd stolen. But other than that, she'd happily tell any story that Doreah wanted to hear. Isabela may be a pathological liar, but she didn't lie when it came to treasure she'd found. Her lying related only to herself and keeping herself out of trouble, if she could help it.
