Who: Ten and Leela
What: Having a talk over tea.

For a while now Leela had been far quieter than was usual for her. Her emotions were boiling and she couldn't find a way to relieve the pressure. Not that sitting and doing nothing ever helped, but what could she do when she wasn't even sure she trusted her best friend anymore? It wasn't just whatever was happening with the Master, it was everything else. Pandora, everything that had happened between them because of this place. She was sitting on all of it, and the warrior was at her breaking point. Before she truly lost all hope of fixing her friendship with Romana, she needed to get things off her chest. This time, she didn't need to theorize what was happening between Romana and the Master. She'd seen it with her own eyes shortly before Romana had regenerated into her current form. Truth be told, she should've told both of the Doctors back then, but Romana had been so horrible, said horrible things to her before she regenerated that Leela just couldn't bring herself to say anything.

Would the Doctor hate her for not bringing it up sooner? Maybe, but Leela would take it in turn for help in getting to the bottom of whatever was happening. She wanted her friend, and there was no one better at helping others than the Doctor. Leela did not know the two incarnations of him that were here that well, but she still trusted them without question. It seemed that the new bodies and personalities did wonders for him not calling her a savage all the time, which she liked. She hated being talked down to like she was stupid, which she wasn't. She was just from a primitive people, but she did have a thirst for knowledge.

After her exchange with the Doctor, Leela headed off to meet with him. K-9 followed along, mostly to make sure his mistress did not go astray and end up in trouble. She had left him behind before, which had gotten her possessed by a demon. The robot dog would not make that mistake again. Before entering the kitchen, Leela took a deep breath. She certainly hoped the Doctor would be open to what she had to say because Romana certainly wasn't.

The Doctor was indeed quite open to whatever Leela had to say. After the TARDIS and his other self had spoken with him regarding their concerns, and after his own exchange with Romana about the no longer mysterious individual she had feelings for, feeling she was afraid he would greet with disapproval, he was anxious for Leela's perspective. He felt terribly wrong-footed in all of this, his own emotions confused after the whole affair with the Master and the Time Lords several months before, and the efforts Koschei had made to save his life when he'd been poisoned in the other universe. It had been years since the Doctor had been faced with problems like these, with all of the entanglements of the past spilling into the present, and absolutely nowhere and nowhen to run to.

Worry distracted the Doctor as he rummaged through the cabinets in the kitchen, seeking the makings for tea. He found himself making foolish mistakes: overfilling the kettle with water, taking down only one cup instead of two, retrieving a banana instead of a box of tea. He scolded himself under his breath for his distraction, but still lost track of time until the whistle of the kettle startled him out or his dour thoughts. He forgot grab a cloth to protect his hands from the heat, and soon found himself jerking his hand back and hissing through his teeth at the sting of newly burned skin.

"This is ridiculous," he scolded himself. "I'm a grown Time Lord. I can make tea without setting the kitchen on fire."

Leela and K-9 stepped into the kitchen in time to hear his cursing. Of course, Leela was no better in making things. One of her friends here had once tried to teach her to cook, but that didn't go anywhere. And making tea was not something Leela knew how to do. She couldn't help but be a bit amused by his words.

"I would hope you can because I am of no help in that regard," she said, announcing her arrival. K-9 wheeled himself in and moved closer to the Doctor.

"Master, I can relay proper instructions on making tea if you wish." The robot dog was always helpful. Or annoying depending on perspective. Leela giggled slightly at K-9's words. She well knew the fourth version of the Doctor, the one she'd traveled with, would not have put up with such a comment. After all, he couldn't handle losing a simple game of chess to K-9, let alone how to make tea.

"I think the Doctor can manage on his own." She looked at the Doctor, wondering if he all ready knew what was going on with Romana or not. It could explain why he'd burned himself. Leela also wondered just where she should begin in telling him her worries. It all really started when Romana was last here, when Leela had first arrived in this place. Perhaps that's where she should begin, to prove that something was happening and that it wasn't good.

Embarrassing as it was to be caught in the midst of his difficulties with the tea, the Doctor was glad of Leela and K-9's arrival. It gave him something concrete to worry about, and K-9 offered him the perfect scapegoat to vent some of his worry in the form of temper. "I know perfectly well how to make tea. I forgot how cheeky your model is." The newer K-9 given to Sarah Jane was more polite, wasn't it? The Doctor thought so, and just at that moment, he wouldn't let anyone convince him otherwise, regardless of what the truth might be.

"Hello, Leela," he added, tone noticeably more polite when he addressed her. "Sorry. I'll have the tea ready in just a mo. Why don't you have a seat? Would you like anything to eat? We should have biscuits around her somewhere, or I could make toast, or maybe you'd like a banana. I think I'll have one. A banana, that is. I'm feeling a bit peckish, and bananas go with everything."

Glancing down at K-9, Leela could only shrug before looking back at the Doctor. "I would use annoying before cheeky, but K-9 means well." There were many times when Leela lost her temper with her K-9, mostly when he was explaining something in scientific detail that she didn't understand, or he was telling her something she didn't want to hear.

"Hello, Doctor. Thank you," she said, sitting down in one of the chairs. K-9 moved himself beside Leela's chair and remained silent for the meantime. "A banana would be good, I think." If the Doctor was going to have one, she would too. Whether it would help with hunger or to help with keeping her calm while they talked, it didn't matter. "Doctor, I am worried about Romana. But my worry was started when this version of her was here before." Leela never was one to beat-around-the-bush, so she just jumped into the conversation head-first. And talking about timey-wimey things wasn't her strong point, especially when there'd been a Romana here before and that's when everything had started. Hopefully the Doctor would understand what she meant.

"You mean she was getting into trouble before now?" The Doctor sighed as he poured the tea. "Why am I not surprised? I think, perhaps, you'd best start from the beginning. Which, actually, you've just done, but I mean details. What is it, exactly, that's been brewing that I've managed to miss?"

He brought the tea over to Leela and handed off her cup before going to rummage about for some bananas. For good measure, he also retrieved a tin of biscuits, which he brought back with him to the table and set out in the middle before he took his own seet across from his former traveling companion.

"Don't let me put words in your mouth, either," he told her. "I want to hear what you think of all of this."

"It has." Which was something Leela didn't like to admit, but there seemed to be only a select few people right now that could see the impending trouble. She took the tea, letting it cool a little before taking a sip. Before she started her take on things, she took a banana and a biscuit, taking a bite of the latter. One thing the Doctor could always count on from Leela was the truth. Lying was not something she liked nor something she did. She also would tell him if he started putting words in her mouth.

"You know how people can come and go here because of the magic in this place? Romana was here when I first arrived. The Master arrived after me. He came with some gate thing, and he was wrong. It is difficult to explain what he was like, but Romana wanted to help him, so she did. However when they used the gate, it turned everyone into the Master. Even after fixing that, she still helped him and did not blame him. To me, it seemed like there was something going on, like the Master was doing something to her. But I could not prove it." She paused to take a sip of her tea, then looked at the Doctor. "I believe she was spending time with him, alone. But before anything could happen, Romana was killed by Lucifer." Leela closed her eyes, remembering the shreds of Romana's body that had been left on the complex steps, obviously still distressed over that memory. "But she came back not long ago, in her third body. That is when things got bad." Again she paused, this time to peel her bana and take a bite, and also to let the Doctor get a word in edge-wise if he wished.

"I know about the gate," the Doctor said, his expression darkening. "It's a Vinvocci medical device. The Master was able to use it to transmit his genetic template over the entire planet back in our own universe. He used it to bring the Time Lords back as well. Not that it helped him much. He was still dying. He used his wife to bring himself back from the dead, you see. Again. The thing is ... " The Doctor paused and turned his tea cup between his hands, considering. He looked lonely and a little lost, like a child whose Christmas hopes had been dashed.

"The thing its ... I wanted him to be different. Better. He saved my life after he realized what he'd unleashed with the Time Lords. I still don't know exactly why, if he just wanted to have his revenge on Rassilon, of if there were more to it. Romana told me he was different, and I wanted to believe her. Evidently, he's not different enough."

Leela listened closely as the Doctor explained about the gate and what the Master had done with it in their own universe. She didn't quite understand how it worked or how it could turn the whole world into one person, but she didn't bother to ask about that. Her curiosity was sedated by her worries. But she understood what it did because she had seen it. Though the part about the Time Lords was odd to her. She knew all about the Time War and what had happened to Gallifrey, but why the Master wanted to bring them back was strange.

"I do not trust him, though he has not done anything to harm anyone since the gate happened. And that was a bit over a year ago now." It was odd to her that the Master hadn't really tried anything else publicly since, but it also greatly worried her. It could mean the Master was just taking his time planning things, which would not bode well for anyone. "Romana has said the same to me, wanted me to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I find it hard to do so." She took a sip of her tea, thinking for some moments.

"Doctor, were you here when Romana was here in her third body? The black-haired, bitch woman?" The way Leela said the word 'bitch' was tentative as she had never quite called anyone that before, and she hesitated to use it regarding Romana, but the third Romana, the President of Gallifrey, really was one.

His eyebrows climbed a little at the curse, but he let it go. He expected that Leela had a reason for using it, and that reason would come to light soon enough.

"I think Romana had just changed when I got here, actually. I remember talk of her trying to sort out if she'd become the kicking type when I stopped by the TARDIS." He'd been in a bit of pain, then, and still somewhat in shock after narrowly avoiding his own regeneration, only to be put face-to-face with the Doctor he'd been meant to become. "Why do you ask? What about the third Romana was so bad here?" He knew what she'd been like in the war, but he didn't know how much of that had carried over to Kansas.

"She was horrible. She kept trying to take over this fight against Lucifer, saying those of us here had no idea what we were doing and that she would make a better leader. I believe she was working with the Master. I cannot say in what capacity, but I do know she spent a lot of time with him." Leela frowned a bit. "She treated me horribly, much like she treated everyone around her. I was with her when she regenerated into her current form. I may have caused it, in fact." Leela wasn't the direct cause, but she still felt guilty. After all, she could have said something about the street and the oncoming car, but she hadn't.

"That day she regenerated, I had followed her. She had gone to meet the Master, and when I saw them, they were in a..." She paused, trying to find the right description for what she saw. "An embrace that lovers might be in. To put it plainly, I had suspected something like that was happening when she was here before, but I could not prove it. And given the way she reacted the last time I talked to her, I believe she is still meeting him. I do not think she truly sees that he is dangerous, but she will not listen to me."

The Doctor was quiet for a long moment as he thought over what Leela had said. Steam rose from his tea, carrying with it a familiar and welcome aroma, but he'd almost forgotten about the cup in his hands.

"Not long ago, the TARDIS told me and the other me that she's worried. She feels like the timelines are moving toward something bad involving the Master and Romana. She can't be certain, of course, but she knows time better than even a Time Lord. Who am I to argue with her about what she sees?"

He sighed and pushed back from the table, running both hands over his hair so that the mop of brown stood on end. "I think Romana genuinely has feelings for the Master. I think that she wants to believe he's changed for the better. Maybe he has ... or maybe he hasn't, and he's playing us all like fiddles. Or maybe he's just not changed enough. I don't know. I haven't seen enough of them together. I haven't had a chance to speak to him properly, either, and I'm not sure it would help if I did. The other Doctor wants to watch them. To spy on them, really, and I'm inclined to agree with him that it's a good idea, no matter how many reservations I might have."

It was comforting to know she wasn't the only worried about this. The TARDIS was concerned, and both Doctors had all ready seemed to form some type of plan to find out.

"The Master used to come here to the complex to visit Romana, but I have not seen him here since she reappeared here. I have not spoken to him, aside from the time I caught him and Romana together, but that was only a few words." Leela sighed a bit. "I agree that they need to be watched, especially the Master. No matter what she may say, I do not trust him, even if he has made attempts to try and be better."

It was then that K-9 entered the conversation again. "Master, if I might. If you wish some way to survey the other mistress, I offer myself." With his ability to record things, it could come in handy should the Doctors decide to use him at all.

"That's good of you to offer," the Doctor said to K-9 with a faint smile. "The only trouble is, I'm not sure Romana wouldn't notice. It might be best to try something more subtle." He scrubbed his face with his hands as he leaned even further back, tipping his chair on its back two legs. "Something Romana and the Master both won't notice."

There were some moments of silence as Leela contemplated the situation. "Well, perhaps you could use an instrument like K-9 has for duplicating conversations, only make it small. I know where the Master is staying, so if he is lured out, I could sneak in and plant something there." After all, Leela had been a tracker in her tribe and she was good at sneaking and not being seen. "If it is small, then there is less chance of it being noticed, correct?"

"Affirmative, mistress," chirped K-9.

"That's good. That's very good." The chair landed with a bang against the floor as the Doctor tipped forward again. "Are you sure you could do it?" His expression was earnest but worried. "You can get in and get out without the Master knowing you were ever present? I don't want to risk you, Leela, but that may be the best solution anyone's put forward yet, and I'm not sure I know of anyone else who might be able to pull it off."

"I can do it, yes. No one will be the wiser for it. You will just need to tell me how to position it since you know technology is not my strong point." Leela knew she could get it done, and she wanted to be the one to plant it. Knowing the Doctor, neither of them could get in and out without leaving some trace. And as far as she knew, none of the other companions here had the same knack for sneaking like she did. Being a tracker in her tribe definitely paid off for something.

Chances were, the Doctor thought, he'd get stuck chatting with the Master on the way out the door if he tried to plant anything where the other man was staying--either version of the Doctor. He'd gotten to know his next self, and so far as he could tell, the eleventh him still had something of a gob and their characteristic penchant for trouble, even when they were trying to stay out of trouble.

"All right. I'll see about getting something together that you can easily conceal, and then we'll come up with a distraction. It's the holidays coming up, so that might give us a good excuse. Could take some doing, though, drawing the Master out. I'm not sure if he'll talk to me, but I can give it a go, or maybe the other me can try, or we can get Romana to distract him without knowing she's distracting him."

Leela nodded, agreeing with the plan. "Romana could be the best choice, but you know how clever she is. She may know she is being sent to distract him. Perhaps you or the other Doctor could try talking to him, and if that does not work, then have Romana try." Leela fell silent as she pondered that for some moments. Then suddenly, a light bulb went off.

"I have it!" She exclaimed a bit loudly. "You or your other should talk to him, perhaps saying something that will lead him to talk to Romana, even meet her somewhere. I could then plant your device in his living space. That way neither the Master nor Romana are the wiser to our plans." Well, at least Leela thought was a good plan. It would mostly depend on how good the Doctor was at talking to the Master without seeming suspicious.

The Doctor blew out a breath and wrapped his hands around his cup. "I could do it. I could talk to the Master. I've already tried once. He wouldn't be suspicious if I tried again. Besides, I have things to say to him. It'll take a bit of doing to come up with something that will send him to Romana, though. I don't suppose you have any suggestions."

Taking some moments to ponder, Leela sipped her tea. "I am uncertain what could send him to Romana. Perhaps just talking about her? If he has plans that include her, or if he has truly changed, then perhaps that is enough to pique his interest? I have noticed he has been hiding lately, not making himself known. It is worrisome." Because only bad ever came when the Master kept a low profile. It usually meant he was plotting something, and Leela really wanted to keep Romana from getting hurt whenever that would happen.

After falling silent, Leela looked back up at the Doctor. "Doctor, is it possible to mend a friendship when trust hangs by a thread?" She was talking of her friendship with Romana, and she hoped the Doctor would be able to give her some advice in how to proceed. Aside from K-9, the Doctor was the only person she truly trusted anymore, and it saddened her. She didn't want Romana to lose her trust, but she was having a hard time closing wounds when she wasn't even sure how to talk to Romana anymore.
