Who: Ziva and Abby
What: Belated birthday celebration of the improvised sort.
When: About half an hour after this
Where: Ziva's desk, for starters. Abby may drag her elsewhere if the need or whim arises.
Warnings: Most likely low

After the original birthday celebration got derailed by work, Abby had been trying to find a time to hold it. With Brennan gone and Booth not in the best of moods, Abby decided she should just do it herself. Because she wasn't going to just let Ziva's birthday slip away without recognition! That was almost heresy in Abby's world. These things didn't slip by without her doing something to recognize the occasion! So as she'd said to Ziva, Abby took a well earned break and ran off to buy a few things. Luckily she'd kept Ziva's present with her at all times, so that would be easy to keep track of. Now the harder part, finding a dessert worthy of a birthday.

Going to the nearest grocery store, Abby made like a bat out of Hell for the bakery. She perused the various items there before her eyes landed upon a cupcake that reminded her of the chocolate one Ziva had given her a couple years earlier. A grin crossed her face and she grabbed it, then got one for herself. Then she went about finding something for a main course. Sandwiches? Pasta? It was a tough choice, but she got a couple sandwiches and drinks, then went and paid for everything. She hurried back to work, detouring back to her lab to get the wrapped present. For improvising, this was actually a really good plan. She could've done much better if they weren't knee deep in work and the like, but this would have to do.

Abby went up to the floor Ziva's desk was on. She peered around the corner to make sure Ziva actually was at her desk. Upon seeing that she was, Abby grinned and bounded over to her like an overly excited child, bag of goodies in one hand, present in the other. She made no attempt to surprise Ziva, knowing such an act would get her shot, a broken nose, or worse. So Ziva was going to get the full-on Abigail Sciuto frontal attack. Once she set the stuff down, of course. She couldn't risk smashing the cupcakes.

"Now, get everything off your desk, hand it to the probie, and take a break because I've got goodies!" Abby grinned. "Now I'm going to give you a choice. Present first or food first?" She arched an eyebrow curiously, holding the bag and the present as though she were a scale. She normally didn't give choices in the matter, but she figured since it was a belated celebration, Ziva should have the choice of what she wanted first.

Ziva wasn't much for the whole celebrating thing. Perhaps before she had been, but Somalia and then Kansas? It seemed so small in comparison to what was going on around them. What could happen if they weren't careful. Even her attempt to take a vacation ended up with her helping Mossad track down sex traffickers who were using children. And she certainly wasn't in the mood right now. She was swamped with work because Booth had gone off the deep end with the loss of Dr.Brennan and she was once again covering for him. When he'd gotten messed with and went on a shooting rampage, she covered, when he deserted her and took Dr.Brennan to deal or whatever, she covered. And now he was suspended for being drunk all the time and irrational. Yes, losing a friend, especially from home, was bad. Yes, Ziva had no idea how she'd respond would Abby be sent back. But they had a job to do. People to protect, both local and not so local.

Still, she was tired. Which was why this specific day she had decided to break her temporary partner in. Really, he needed to learn how things worked and what better way than paper work? He complained that she didn't have the authority, but a simple knife throw shut him up.

After her conversation with Abby, Ziva had resigned herself to a birthday celebration of sorts. Really, there was no point in stopping Abby, it was a battle Ziva had learned a long time ago. Even if she tried to explain her reasoning, Abby would use it as even more proof that it needed to happen. And really, Abby didn't need to know about what happened in Somalia. So when she saw the goth forensic specialist show up, Ziva gave her a wane grin and nodded.

"Right captain my captain." That was the correct term, right? No matter. Picking up the paper work she had been working on, Ziva moved to her partner's desk and smiled sweetly, "I'd do them, really, but you see Abby has other plans for me and really, it's best not to upset her. I'm sure you understand." Seeing him about to protest, Ziva merely nodded to where she had thrown the knife and that got her partner to shut up. That done, the Israeli moved back to her desk and quirked a brow at the choices.

"Why not eat first." Because when did she ever find time to remember to eat?

Of course she well knew Ziva wasn't the celebrating type, but everyone needed some cheering up to break up the drama and usually heavy atmosphere of the work they did. Abby wasn't going to let Ziva wiggle out of this. It was also some semblance of normalcy to this rather chaotic version of Earth. This was something that didn't have magic or Heaven or Hell anywhere near it. It was simply human. And it also served the practical function of eating, which was a basic human necessity. So really, this was killing two birds with one stone.

Abby was slightly surprised that Ziva didn't try to protest, even for fun. But there was a sneaking suspicion that Ziva needed this break from work. So she was more than happy to comply. She set the two wrapped gifts down on the edge of the desk. One box contained a knife and the other contained a set of throwing knives. Abby couldn't decide between them, and knowing Ziva could never have too many knives, she'd gotten them both. She then set the bag of food down on the table and took out the drinks first, setting them aside, then pulled out the sandwiches.

"I got a couple sandwiches. You can have whichever one you want, it doesn't matter to me." Both were deli sandwiches, one with turkey and the other with ham. Both were stuffed with lettuce, tomato, cheese, mustard and mayo. Abby then suddenly grinned at Ziva. "And the best part. Dessert! I originally was going to get a cake, but now that it's just you and me, I went for something a little smaller." She pulled out the large chocolate cupcakes and handed one to Ziva. There was a moment of her wondering if Ziva would remember the connection to the cupcake McGee had stolen and eaten. With the bag now empty, she crumpled it up and tossed it into the nearest waste basket, then grabbed a vacant desk chair and pulled it over to sit down. "And voila! Your birthday feast! We'll just pretend it's still November and not December."

Briefly eyeing the boxes, Ziva shook her head in slight amusement as Abby then provided to pull out the two sandwiches. They were from the local deli she went to, the one she made sure was kosher, so there was that. But of course Abby got excited about the dessert. She was about to protest that they should at least eat the sandwiches first when she was handed the cupcake. Eyes lighting up some, Ziva chuckled in amusement.

"And this time, no McGee to steal it. How thoughtful."

Smiling, Ziva picked the turkey sandwich once she had placed the cupcake down to wait to eat it.

"It's not that late into December, I think I can block disbelief." Block. Suspend it was all the same thing. About to take a bite of her sandwich, Ziva noticed her temporary partner eyeing her cupcake and she did the eyes watching you signal with her fingers before her gaze drifted to where she kept her knives in her desk. And that scared the idiot from even thinking of taking her birthday cupcake.

"Well thank you, Abby. This means a lot." And it did. Because it was easy to forget something like a birthday in this situation where the world was ending and no one could see it.

Abby grinned, a glint in her eyes as Ziva remembered. "Precisely why I got it. No one here would have the nerve to even try." Or so she hoped, anyway. If someone did, they wouldn't get away with it. Basically, no one messed with Abby or any of her friends. She was a forensics expert. She had ways of finding the guilty and, if the need arose, killing people without leaving forensic evidence behind. Of course, she would never actually kill anyone, it was just a threat she liked to kindly remind people of from time to time when they got on her nerves.

Unlike other members of their NCIS team, Abby wasn't one to correct Ziva's missayings. She might've silently corrected her at times, but she thought it was part of Ziva's character and she rather liked that. So she smiled and took the ham sandwich, unwrapping it and taking a bite. She giggled as Ziva sent the warning to her new partner. "Good. At least it hasn't hit Christmas yet." Which would be a whole other matter all together, but Abby would see to that once things quieted down here at work.

"You're very welcome, Ziva." And with that, Abby suddenly remembered she hadn't given Ziva her birthday glomp yet, but perhaps she'd hold that off for the moment. After all, she figured Ziva was expecting that, and while Abby was smart enough not to throw a surprise party or anything for Ziva, she could ambush her with a hug. Just not from behind. Ziva had at least gotten used to the hugging thing. "Happy birthday, Ziva! And once things quiet down a bit around here, perhaps a round of drinks?" Which they both could've used right now, but drinking on the job was generally frowned upon and Abby wanted to keep her job, and she knew Ziva would want to keep hers as well. So another time when they were off the job.

"No, they wouldn't." Normally, Booth might pretend to consider it, but he knew better than to mess with Ziva or her things. Because she had proven herself to be exactly as Tony referred to her back home. A Israeli Ninja... the most lethal of all, really. It was fun. Or something. No, it was just how she'd been trained and it stuck. Also? It came in handy more often than not. People who messed with her soon learned to regret it. Which was why she did harmless threats to prove her point. It was just luck that she was never reported for it. But that was probably because those she threatened were afraid of what she'd do if she found out. Well, it worked in her favor so she wasn't going to question.

"This is true, though Chanukah is actually very close to Christmas this year. It starts on the 20th of December." It wasn't uncommon for the two holidays to correspond, but that didn't mean it always happened. It would make holiday celebrations easier, that was certain. One of these days, she'd get herself another Star of David necklace as it had been taken from her in Somalia, but right now, there were cases to worry about and the apocalypse and all that fun stuff.

Was Ziva expecting a birthday glomp? Of course she was. This was Abby after all. So long as it didn't come from behind and there were no surprises, all was good. But Abby knew this so she'd just put up with the hug attack. It was just safer that way, really.

"A round of drinks definitely should be in order when things calm down." Whenever that would be. Between the nature of their jobs anyway, on top of the whole demons and Seal related drama they had to deal with, Ziva had to wonder if there would ever be a time when things 'calmed down'. She understood that was why most of the displaced got drunk regularly, but still, it wasn't exactly something she enjoyed having to watch.

Eating her sandwich, Abby's mind quickly turned to holiday celebrations. And, yes, she'd force Ziva to celebrate at least a little bit. She wasn't exactly sure if anyone else here was Jewish, but even if there were, she'd celebrate Chanukah with Ziva. After all, she wasn't going to let her friend celebrate alone, that wasn't kosher, so to speak.

"Speaking of Chanukah, what are you thinking of doing by way of celebrating?" It was Abby's way of seeing if Ziva was all ready thinking of it or not. Also to glean information on whether or not she'd be able to get Ziva in the celebrating mood. The lack of Ziva's Star of David necklace didn't go unnoticed by Abby. In fact, that would be one of her presents to Ziva in the event the woman didn't go and buy one herself between now and then. The absence of the necklace troubled Abby, though. In all the time she'd known Ziva, it was one of two things the Israeli never went anywhere without. The other, of course, being her knife. Several scenarios ran through her mind of the reasons Ziva no longer wore it. A few of them weren't remotely pretty, and others were more absurd. It was a little obvious that Ziva hadn't abandoned her faith. What had happened in the year that separated them? Whatever it was, it wasn't something she should inquire about now. No doubt it was something as bad as Jenny's death, and that would just ruin the birthday atmosphere Abby was trying to create.

"Excellent. I think we deserve them." Abby grinned. Some how, some way, she'd find time for them to go get those drinks. She definitely always had ways of getting around these kinds of things, anyways. It was good to be sitting there with Ziva. Abby was getting used to the fact that the rest of their team wasn't there, the Gibbs Withdrawal was starting to subside, but it didn't mean she missed them any less. She was so thankful that Ziva was here, that she had someone from home that could help center and focus her when needed. If she'd been here alone, no doubt Abby would've completely fallen apart by now. "Even with all the crazy whack-job things that happen around here, I'm glad we're in it together. Someone's gotta keep some sanity in this place." She chuckled, knowing well Ziva was the sane one in this case.

"Nothing special. I found a menorah that I bought so that I can light the candles, but beyond that, I have no plans."

Ziva didn't mind it, too much. She rarely did anything for Chanukah. She lit the candles, she made herself a small dinner with traditional foods and connected to the holiday and what it meant for her faith. And then she would do the Christmas celebrations of her friends. Really, she was used to it and didn't mind. Not to mention she was pretty certain she had seen people start talking about having a holiday party at the complex. And if they hadn't, they were bound to start eventually. After all, they'd already had a July 4th party and a Halloween party, and Jess had thrown Thanksgiving for those who had no where to go. So really, a holiday party? Not exactly far fetched.

It was good that Abby didn't bring up the missing Star of David necklace. It was still a sore subject for the Israeli, and she had definitely gone on the defensive when someone asked why she didn't have one when they found out she was Jewish. It was none of their business in what she had endured and a clipped response of that it was lost on a job as well as a steely glare kept the conversation from progressing. That wouldn't work with Abby, though. So it was good that she didn't bring it up, because Ziva really didn't want to think about it.

"We definitely deserve them." Sipping coffee, Ziva continued to eat her sandwich until it was gone. Even though she hadn't noticed how hungry she had actually been, Ziva did feel better after eating something. So that was good at least. But she'd wait for Abby until going to the cupcake.

"I'm glad for that, too." While Ziva would have adapted had no one from home been here with her, it definitely helped to have Abby around. Even if her antics sometimes confused the former Mossad officer. They were familiar and it was oddly comforting in a place like this.
