WHO: Sam & Ruby.
WHAT: Summoning her in for a visit.
WHEN: Evening.
WHERE: Mansfield, Ohio. In a motel far, far away from where Sam and Dean are staying.
RATING: High.

When Ruby sent him the message verifying that she was ready, Sam glanced across the room at the various symbols that he had drawn out onto the kitchen floor. Better there than the carpeting, as the chalk would wipe away easily from the tiles when he was finished. He didn't quite know the spell by heart yet (it wasn't as though Sam often summoned demons), so he had a book propped up beside the drawings on the floor for reference. Stating the words of Latin out smoothly and clearly, Sam followed the book letter for letter until he was ready for the next step. Kneeling down, he plucked up a match and lit it, dropping it into the center of the symbols where the other various ingredients needed for the ritual were stored. A fire flared up and Sam immediately leaned back, cringing at the memory of the burnt curtains from the night before. When the flames settled, he finished the summoning with a few final words, some of which included Ruby's name, before he leaned back along his spot on the floor and waited.

She'd be along any second now.

Eyes staring down at the markings, he looked across the kitchen area in search for Ruby. He didn't know where she'd show up. In the bathroom, under the single bed he'd gotten for the two of them, on top of the TV. The summoning thing was so uncomfortable for him. Not because he was literally yanking Ruby to him from hundreds of miles away (though it was with good reason that he did worry sometimes, which was why he always felt asking first was more polite), but because Ruby had the opportunity to get the jump on him. He trusted her, that wasn't even a question. But Sam was still getting used to the date a demon thing. Being able to summon the one that he loved whenever he wanted was convenient and useful, but also unusual.

Sam listened, hardly surprised to find that Ruby was being so quick to offer the advice on what to do. Even when she was challenging him, she was helping. The advice would be useful; Sam had been going about it the wrong way. He had been trying to open the lock as he would have normally upon approaching it on foot. Twisting it from the outside, rather than in. "I can't see the lock," Sam argued, frowning. He didn't know what type of lock it was or if it was the same kind of lock that every other door had or what. Of course, upon memory, Sam would say that it was pretty basic. They were staying in a pretty shady motel. The room didn't even card keys. It was all locks and bolts.

Sitting up a little, but not enough to make Ruby uncomfortable, Sam scrunched his brow up and tried to focus. The lock didn't budge.

He was about to slump back and surrender, but Ruby's next offer made giving in to defeat a lot more difficult than he thought it'd be. She'd let him pin her down? Sam looked at her uncertainly. "You'd like that? That wouldn't bother you?" What if he hurt her doing it? He wasn't exactly a perfectionist at all this yet. Yet, at the same time, Sam always found himself feeling particularly fascinated when he was able to take what Ruby taught him and turn it into something sensual. Kind of like how he was able to reach in and find the real her.

The offer was definitely very tempting.

"You can picture it though." she asked him as he sat up focusing more "You can think of it, work it out in your head, what it looks like, how it works to unlock the door. Its not..." she laughed thinking about her next statement, "Its not size that matters. Its focus, knowing what you're trying to move, a lock or a person, it'll take the same amount of effort and I know what you have flowing in your veins right now so I know that you can do it" she said, moving her hand a fraction, lifting his jeans from where they had been discarded on the floor to a chair in the corner of the room.

And there again he was worried about hurting her, that wasn't possible though he was adoreable as ever for the worry.

"I'd be fine with it Sam. I trust you and its a good incentive isn't it. Think about it, you shouldn't even have to exert much pressure, save that for the attacking demons with what you can do, the telekinisis is just another part of it, it should be second nature"

It's not size that matters. Oh, Ruby. Only you. He rolled his eyes, hiding his amusement. Then it was straight back to business, that look of determination that he got whenever he was in training plastering itself square across his face. "It's not second nature," Sam pointed out, "I'm human. It might be second nature for demons, but not me." Maybe even first nature. Who knew.

She said that she'd be fine with it, at least. Sam would have to do it as easy as he could. Except he didn't know how to be easy with it. That was partially why he'd asked Ruby for help in the first place. He needed practice alongside someone who knew how to control it all a lot better than he could. And judging from the way that Ruby had been able to raise his jeans and toss them aside onto a nearby chair without much effort at all? Yeah, Sam did feel that she was the most ideal choice for the job. She knew what she was doing when it came to his abilities, Sam would give her that much. Even if he often didn't like the choices that led into how far he was getting now, Ruby did know what to do.

He feared that he would end up breaking the door. Sam furrowed his brow, mouth tightening into a thin line as he attempted to focus once more. The door shook lightly, in which Sam dropped his hand and shot Ruby a wary look. Then he lifted his arm and tried again. The door began to lightly rattle once more. A few more attempts were made, but eventually Sam heard something click. He craned his neck a little, watching as the lock slowly slid open. As soon as Sam realized that he had done what was needed, he flopped back against the pillows and breathed out a sigh of relief.

"Second nature, huh?"

"It'll get easier, just like pulling demons, every new thing you work out you can do will get easier and easier till you barely have to think about it. because thats the strength in your blood now. Thats the power you're gonna use against the bitch, imagine it, throwing her around like a ragdoll and then sucking the life all out of her, ending her.

She watched him work at the door, concentrating, one thing to be said for her boy, he was an attentive student, always had been. He could just focus, and with a few tries, he was there, the lock sliding open, He'd done it, and as he flopped back on the pillow, Ruby leaned in for a kiss that he well deserved.

"Told you, and eventually, you'll be able to do that easy" she told him, "I know the things you have to do aren't always apitizing, I know you saw what it turned the others into, but you're stronger than they are, and I'm hardly anything like Azazel so...You're gonna be okay. You know that right, you'll kill Lilith and everything, everything will be so much better. You'll see."

She clicked the lock closed again, he would probabaly approve of the privacy, and curled herself into his arms again. It was strange, he was still human, still so fragile like the rest of them, but she didn't often think of him like that because he wasn't going to have their weaknesses for ever. No he'd be something stronger, better. He'd kill Lilith, Lucifer would walk upon the earth and Sam would become stronger because he'd saved her Father. He'd be rewarded and maybe then they could just be in love, no secrets, no lies, they could just be themselves.

Lucifer had to care about his faithful enough to grant her that. And Azazel and Lilith had both said Sam would be rewarded for what he did, if Ruby kept him alive long enough. And no one was hurting him.

"I never thought we'd have this...just, lying here like this, and whenever you're ready you can have your reward but...this is nice isn't it"

Sam nodded, closing his eyes. The blood did make one hell of a difference. He wasn't as tired as he usually would be from using his abilities like that. Especially when it was something that he was still trying to get a handle on. Sam had learned enough over the past year to know when he needed to walk cautiously and it was definitely whenever he was trying to master a new ability. "Appetizing is definitely not the word to use for it," Sam mused, breathing in and out slowly, "I hate it sometimes, but I've learned to trust you. You know what's best here." She knew how to get him to Lilith. And her blood..."I think I'm gonna need you around more." Sam opened his eyes and focused on Ruby. "I feel so drained when you're gone and I think it might be more than just me missing you. You said that wanting the blood was okay. But what about needing it?"

Normally, Sam wouldn't go out of his way to admit that he needed something like that. But he had learned a lot from the time that he had spent with Ruby. She cared. And she was good at listening. Hearing the lock click again, Sam relaxed just slightly, his arms tightening around Ruby as she moved in closer. He hated bringing it up, but it was important. And he needed to know if there was more to this blood stuff than they had anticipated.

"It's nicer than I thought it'd be," Sam told Ruby, "just being with you like this..." Sam kissed Ruby on the cheek, one hand sliding up so that he was able to trace over her lips with his thumb. "God, forget the blood." Sam frowned, suddenly feeling as though he was being incredibly stupid. Here he was, on his one night out with Ruby for two months, and all he could talk about was her blood. What was wrong with him? "In fact, forget this motel room." Sam sat up a little, his hand reaching out for her own. "Why don't we get dressed? We could go outside. Look at the stars. Do something. I don't want this night to end here with me groaning on about how much of a weirdo vampire wannabe I am. It's our first night together in months and I want it to be about you."

Learned to trust her.

The words got to her at levels the demon didn't know she possessed. Lying to Sam, it felt horrible, like a gnawing inside her that she vaugely remembered as feeling like guilt. But it couldn't be because this was for Sam as much as anything. And he'd thank her one day. He would.

But he was getting hooked on her, she could hear it in his voice, That was good though wasn't it, That was right, he had to need it to consume enough of it to make him what he needed to be. To change him as much as he needed to be changed. That was for the best. That was the way she'd planned it. He'd need her around constantly and things would be better. But it was scaring him. How much he needed it. Want becoming need.

"...The blood, its pretty powerful, its like a constant buzz. Its not that you need it. Its just without that buzz of course you'll feel drained, and you're using your powers more. You're running through the blood quicker. Thats all it is."

The lies flowed easily as ever and as he kissed her on the cheek she closed her eyes for a moment suddenly uncomfortable, maybe for the first time ever with what she was doing. His fingers traced her lips and he told her he wanted to go out, and instantly she wondered what she had done wrong. Did he not want more sex. Had he figured it out?. Had she lost him?. But no, he'd told her this before, he loved her for more than what she could give him. He'd said. He wanted to spend time with her and it felt good.

"I'd like that, if you want I mean, just, out being as normal as we can be. No one knows us here. It could be nice. Why do people watch the stars. I remember the last time we lay out like that, didn't get much star watching done but...whats the attraction, they just sit there being stars"

Weirdo vampire wannabe. No he wasn't that, he wasn't that at all. And if he was it was her fault.

Maybe she could still pull back.

No. No she couldn't. There was no way.

"I'm always gonna be here when you need me Sammy, always"

Ruby wasn't the only one feeling guilty. Sam loved Ruby. He had set out to meet her tonight, dragging her up here all the way from Lawrence by means of summoning, and from that point on he started selfishly whining on about the blood and how he was going to just, what, need her around all the time as a convenience to fulfill his needs? Hell no. He was here tonight with her because he wanted to be with Ruby. It was his mind right now, all soaked up in the high that her blood gave him. He wasn't thinking clearly anymore. Sam rubbed at his eyes in self frustration; he was making a mess of things, how could he make it all better?

By taking her outside. Forgetting about the blood. Showing her a good time.

He looked at Ruby oddly for a second, having only just barely registered the nickname coming out of her mouth. Sammy. The only people in his life that he'd ever let get away with using the nickname were his father and brother. Hearing it out of Ruby - well, it wasn't normal, but it didn't downright infuriate him like it would have with every other demon in existence. Each of which usually took it upon themselves to use the name to mock him. Ruby wasn't mocking him, however. She was being comforting and gentle with it, therefore Sam didn't want to bark out angrily at her like he would have with anyone else. It made him flash her a look of confusion, but aside from that he said nothing. Maybe it was an accident. One thing was for sure - he wasn't gonna pitch a fit at her after all the worry about blood that he had just dumped on her.

"The blood..." Sam tried to get that need out of his voice, closing his eyes and mentally pushing it away. He didn't need it. He was fine. Ruby had said so herself. Just a buzz. "The blood isn't important." He took her hand and kissed it, then he pushed the blankets away from himself and began to climb out of the bed. "People watch the stars for different reasons. Study, curiosity, photography, astrology..." Sam scooped up his boxers and tugged them on. "Most times, even with those cases involved? It's just the beauty of it." He grabbed her bag next, walking over to her bed and offering it to Ruby with a light smile. He still looked unsure of himself, but he'd get back on track soon enough. "C'mon. Get dressed. I'll show you the rest."

[ooc: Fail for tagging so late and forgetting about the Sammy stuff!]

He hadn’t flipped out at her for the slip of the tongue that had her calling him Sammy, in fact he’d just sort of looked confused, It was a definite step in some kind of direction. She hoped it was the right one. Because there had been no malice in it. Nothing, simply it was a name, a nickname, something very simple. But then it wasn’t was it. Sammy, its what his family called him, or demons looking to mock him. And all he’d done is looked somewhat confused but remailed silent, she’d let it go for now, try it again conciously at some point, see what happened.

And yes, she still heard that need, that desperation in his voice. He was getting hooked on her blood and it should have been everything she wanted, so why the hell did it hurt so much, Why was she so worried that she was hurting him when she’d known from the start that she would be. That she’d been lying to him. She took her time to mull this over and watched him dress, not taking her usual attitude of admiring the view, so much was the feeling overwhelming to her.

You’re gonna have to do things that go against that gentle nature of yours
People will die, innocents, by your hand.
Kill her and you’ll raise my Father.
You’ll be rewarded, more than you can even imagine.
It has to be you Sammy...
I can explain...

Sad fact was she couldn’t. There was nothing at all that she could say to make this any better. No way to explain, so the lies would continue. And she’d continue to do what she knew and love the man in front of her, hide the guilt and the worry. And just do what he wanted, have a night of fun. A happy night with just him and her and apparently the stars, she slipped on a pair of panties and her bra swinging her legs over the side of the bed looking through the few pairs of jeans and tops she’d brought and taking the chance to run a brush through her unsuprisingly tangled hair, brushing it out into its mostly natural bouncy ringletted style.

“You got me all curious, all the time I’ve been in the world and I never really thought of the beauty of Creation. I should have really, so you and me, we’ll go, we’ll look at the stars and it’ll be amazing. Por whatever else you’re planning for tonight.”, she pulled on a pair of jeans and held up two tops, “Plain black or the one with the little devil on it” she asked, with a grin, “Couldn’t resist when I saw it” she joked.

Sam pulled his jeans up, taking a moment to fasten his belt before bothering to look over at Ruby again. When he did, she was presenting him with two separate shirts. His eyes immediately went to the one with the devil on it, halting that self exasperation and confusion he had been battling momentarily as he examined the artwork. Ruby buying devil shirts - or possibly stealing them - was not terribly surprising at all. Sam prepared himself for the scratch of irritation that was undoubtedly going to leap up and attack, but he ended up being surprised to find the smile pushing it's way across his face instead. Rolling his eyes, Sam pointed to the black one. "That's a little too much demon for me. Put that one on. It's nice." Shaking his head, Sam went searching for his shirt, another bout of confusion finding him based on his reaction. First he was letting the Sammy thing go, now the little devil jokes weren't even bothering him?

It was the being in love. It had to be. He was letting things go. Becoming more attuned to the type of humor and intent that Ruby had. Fingers raking through his hair, Sam sat back down on the edge of the bed and started to pull his socks on thoughtfully. By the time he had halfway managed to pull his shoes on, Sam suddenly turned to look at her from where he was sitting, curiosity striking him rather abruptly.

"Have you eaten yet? Do you want to stop and get some food on the way? We could sort of have a late night picnic or something."

"Really, I thought there was a sort of irony to the whole proceedings" she teased him but did as he suggested. Black one it was, though he had been at least entertained by the little Devil shirt. She'd had to, it had appealed to her on many levels. And she hadn't stolen it. She'd...influenced others to get it for her, mostly even legally. Sort of. But he'd decided on the black so it was slipped on over her bra before she reached for her boots, and the knife still lying where it had been dropped when its use had ceased. It still had her blood on it, she thought with a smile moving it to the side table until she'd put on her boots.

"No, I...to be honest I didn't bother. Got here when I was ready and you called. Like I promised. I could go for some food though. We could get a chinese and sit and watch the stars, how about it?"

She generally didn't think about food till the body informed her it needed something to sustain it without it going all rotting. Also there were fries, fries really were the staple of life.

"...Chinese places let you get fries with stuff right?" she asked in all seriousness. There'd be a change of plan if there wasn't. And there really would have. It was in fact to important a factor not to consider

Sam was slightly disappointed to find that Ruby was steadily hiding her body underneath layers of clothes. Who's great idea was it to get dressed and out of bed again? Oh, right. "Let's avoid irony for now," Sam suggested, eying the devil printed shirt as it was discarded for the black one. Shoes on, Sam leaned back and waited for Ruby to get dressed. He found himself staring at the knife as soon as he spotted the blood on it, his thoughts and feelings getting all conflicted inside of him as soon as he saw it.

"Chinese is good. And - I, no, I don't think they have fries, but we can stop somewhere. Whatever you want." He stood up, moved over to kiss her on the cheek again, then picked up the knife with both hands from the bedside table and cleared his throat a little.

"I - I think I'm gonna go clean this off, okay? I don't want someone to accidentally come in here and think that..." He gestured to the knife. Unless they were taking it with them? Probably. Ruby always carried it. "I mean, I don't want anyone to think that anything happened. With you carrying it. As much fun as disturbing our neighbors is, I don't think it'd be the same kinda trouble I want to deal with if someone catches us with a bloody knife." He turned his back to her and walked over to the sink, slowly reaching for the handle. The water cut on and he moved to rinse it off. He paused halfway to the stream of water, his finger sliding across the blade and sweeping some of the blood off. Sam sucked the blood from his finger, sliding the rest of the knife underneath the water to be cleaned as he did so.

She smirked and finished dressing, the devil print top back in her bag, she'd liked it. The kind of weirdly twisted humour that appealed to Ruby a lot of the time and Sam was getting used to it, she stood up catching Sam's longing look at the knife and turned away delibrately to find her coat.

"I'd like that, stopping somewhere, Can't have a good and balanced meal without fries right"

Buttoning up the coat she had worn here, her regular jacket still in Lawrence, Ruby was ready to go. And Sam was...washing the knife, She barely caught the movement of his hand, taking the last few drops of blood. She couldn't call it wrong, she decided with a hint of sadness, since it had been she that had done it to him. She'd made him this. With her own actions.

But they were going to go out and be normal, just a couple like all the others got to be. And sit, and eat, and watch the stars, and not think about how she was slowly destroying him.

To make him better, stronger he has to go through this, you know that

Telling herself what she knew wasn't doing her much good. The guilt was there and she suspected now that it always would be.

He swallowed the blood down, pulling the cleansed knife out from the sink. The water was switched off and the knife was dried carefully with a nearby towel. He handled it with caution, turning it over in his hands almost respectfully. It was just a knife, yet it seemed so much more important now that he knew it was the knife that they would forever use to cut Ruby open. It was his means to the blood that he wanted. Possibly even needed, even if Ruby didn't understand it herself. The thought terrified him. Her blood was powerful. What if he got too attached? What if he couldn't function without it? It was already strange enough that he drank it down. It was blood. But having to survive off of it...would it come to that? A part of him was content with the idea. Sam found that he was more than disgusted by it. Seriously, what the hell was wrong with him?

"Okay, fries first," Sam said, turning the knife over once more so that he was holding it by the blade. He extended it to her, focusing on Ruby's face rather than the twisted thoughts and feelings racing through him. She was a good distraction. He could do this. He'd be fine.

Reaching for his hooded sweatshirt, Sam threw it over his shoulder and offered Ruby his hand. She was right. They could go out and be themselves without having to worry about being spotted. He wanted to take advantage of it. He tried for a smile, hoping that he didn't seem off in his behavior. Sam wanted this to be fun. "Please tell me you know your constellations."

She took the blade, attaching the knife to its usual place in her boot before pulling the leg of her jeans down and nodding to him, it was always there, or on her hip if she was going into a fight, ready to use to defend him or to give him what he needed. Because those were the most important things, he was the most important thing in her world. She knew he had worries, fears and doubts, but he was right to, it was her job to make sure they didn't consume him.

He took her hand and she shot him what could only be described as a smile that was entirely genuine. He cared about her enough to walk around with her, here where no one knew them as two people in love. As long as Dean wasn't out and about, but it was a big place, and they'd work it out, go to places he never would. They could be normal, just normal and in love and Ruby was irrationally excited about the concept. She squeezed his hand practicly pulling Sam out the door into the motel lot.

"Should I? You're the nerd" she told him teasingly as she looked up at the few visible stars from where they were "There's the dipper...thing, oh and Orien"

Sam was a little startled at how quick Ruby was to pull him out the door. He wasn't sure if she'd be excited about going out and doing this or not, but she sure seemed to be interested in it now. Double checking to make sure that he had his keys (both for the room and the Impala parked outside), Sam shut the door to the dingy motel room that they'd abandoned and moved out into the lot. The Impala was settled snugly between a van and a truck a few rows into the parking area, but Sam knew that Ruby would be able to pick it up easily enough so he happily let her lead the way.

"Yep, that's Orion, all right," Sam replied, peering up at the sky. "Did you know that scientists say that it's probably going to be the longest lasting constellation in history? It probably won't die out for at least another one to two million years."

As soon as they reached the Impala, Sam slid his hand out of hers and shifted it to her shoulders, leading her around to the passenger side. Sam didn't think twice about opening the door for her. It was the type of behavior that he wished he could exhibit all the time. Back in Lawrence or anywhere near Dean, Sam would never allow himself to act like this so openly. "I guess it's my turn to teach you a few things, huh?"

The Impala, well damn if that car didn’t have memories for them, She grinned across at him as she led him toward Dean’s precious car and stopped just long enough to follow his gaze up to the sky, “Two million...” she mused, even she didn’t think in terms of millenia or above. Centuries yeah but beyond that and you got into the scary place where the Angels lived. Though she supposed that would change when Lucifer walked, maybe she would see Orion die.

“Its beautiful” she told him, just as he led her around to the passanger side of the car. And opened the door, actually doing the wonderfully gentlemanly thing. He was adoreable. And wonderful, and hers. And she was more than aware there was a lot that Sam could teach her. She even looked forward to it. Climbing into the car she checked for the tape collection she knew would be in there, maybe she could even convince Sam away from the emo for one night, Dean was usually good for some AC/DC or Metallica or something. She’d consider using the pout if Sam questioned it but she didn’t want to overuse it either, couldn’t have it loosing its power over him.

“Music, fries, chinese food and then somewhere to play stargazer, is there a blanket in the back, I guess we just find some open field or high up lookout point somewhere and see what we can see. Make sense?”
She leaned back into the seat waiting for Sam to climb in and be petulent about the music. He would, she expected nothing less.

Once Ruby was safely inside the Impala, Sam closed the door and went around the front of the vehicle to get to his own seat. An immediate frown was given in response to the sight of Ruby digging through Dean's crappy tapes. Seriously? Was he ever going to be able to get away from it? "No way," Sam told her, smirking slightly at the memory of his brother chanting out the 'house rules' for the car. "Driver picks the music," Sam said, twisting the radio on. He found a decent station easily, cranking up the volume as the lyrics to 'When You Were Young' by The Killers with satisfaction. She could complain all she wanted. She'd have to deal.

"We might have something in there," Sam said, pulling the Impala out onto the road. "Sometimes Dean and I crash in the car, so unless he took them out at the motel we were at before we'll have something to use." There was a Wendy's around here somewhere. Sam just needed to remember which way it was. In the meantime, the rush that blood had given him was making him a lot more energetic than he usually would have been. And Ruby being with him? Made him cheerful. It was interesting having all these feelings inside of him when he'd spent the last couple months feeling gloomier than ever.

It made him want to...well, darn it, it made him want to sing.

"Can we climb this mountain? I don't know - higher now than ever before. I know we can make it if we take it slow. That's takin' easy, easy now, watch it go." He wasn't being horribly loud with it, but it was definitely different for the guy who usually just drove and listened. His voice was low, but loud enough for Ruby to be able to pick it up without a doubt. Sam could sort of see why Dean did it to him. It was kinda funny singing songs that the passenger didn't like, if only to annoy them.

Driver picked ridiculous music apparently, And was he singing. Singing to the very very drama filled music. Even if the lyrics did make sense to her for what they were. And he was being cute with the singing. She even joined in a little having gotten used to certain songs just from travelling around with Sam. And this was one, in all its angsty glory.

We're burning down the highway skyline, On the back of a hurricane that started turning. When you were young, When you were young.. Okay so it wasn't one of the worst out there and if remembered rightly it was fairly fitting to the situation.

Because they were, and it was, and it had.

She looked over at Sam for a little while, just watching him sing, watching him enjoying this, enjoying being with her and teasing her and being in love with her, and she found herself wondering once again how she could do the things she was doing to the man across from her and still love him with everything she was. She wanted them to get to the Wendy's. Get fries and just lie out somewhere, watching the starts. Enjoying his company.

"How far is this Wendy's?" she asked over the music head resting back against the seat and putting her focus somewhere else.

Sam was even more amused by the fact that she had joined him. Obviously, his hard work was paying off. First she'd learn the lyrics, then she'd start liking them. Feeling a bit smug, Sam nodded to the road ahead, gesturing toward the restaurant in question. "Right there," he told her, turning the wheel to hit up the drive through. "Better than McDonald's, any day of the week. Might just get my food here." Sam glanced over at her, brows rising curiously. "Unless you still wanted to get the Chinese?"

There were a few cars lined up in front of them. Sam reached over the turn the music down, just slightly. He leaned over, reaching for Ruby's hand. He was still bothered about the way that he had behaved around her earlier because of the blood. Sam really wanted to make up for it. "You know that I love you, don't you? I don't just say it 'cause I can."

He'd never do that. Especially not to a demon. Or to anyone, really. It was cruel.

"No we can get the food here" she said, the chinese could be another day. Wendy's had fries and that was the important bit, she supposed she could get something with them but she'd leave the order up to Sam to decide on. She waited as they pulled into the drive thru queue, expecting more singing. She didn't expect Sam to take her hand the way he did and reaffirm his love for her.

"Yeah I know you love me" she told him, "If either of us were faking for some bizarre reason I think it would have become apparent by now, and I love you too, because you know there's no way I'm just saying it. I can lie and manipulate and decieve but there's no faking when you get down to the very core of me and you have. Dark and disgusting as it is there."

But what had made him think like this?

"What brought on the affirmation?." she asked, squeezing his hand.

"It's not disgusting," Sam said quietly, "that's not what I'd call it." Sam pulled her hand to his mouth and kissed it, then gave her fingers another squeeze. "I already told you that you feel different from other demons. You're not evil. Not like them. You're just...different." She had to be. There was no way any demon in the world would ever bother with someone like him the way that she was if the were evil. Ruby wasn't evil. "You're like me," he finished, looking Ruby straight on, "different."

Sam drove the Impala up a few spaces. Still a few more vehicles to go before they got to the order screen. "I know I've been acting sort of....weird. Lately." Sam shook his head. "I don't know why. All I know is that I want you to be sure that I love you. 'Cause it might come off like I...don't? Or maybe I'll just do things that piss you off. I dunno, if either of those things happen I want you to tell me. I don't want to -" Sam frowned, his grip on her hand tightening a bit more. It wasn't painful - or at least it wouldn't have been if Ruby were normal - but it was the sort of grip that made it obvious that he wasn't ready to let go. "- I don't want to lose you. To whatever is going on with me. I'll figure it out, I swear. I just feel like I'm doing something wrong."

Not evil.

Following Azazel's orders to the letter, working with the First Demon, the last Seal. Getting him hooked on her blood and lying to him. No she was practicly saintly. And it didn't feel as rightious as it once had. She missed Azazel, painfully sometimes, missed having that guidance, that clarity he always brought. But he'd be so angry at her for being weak. For falling in love with the weapon.

A tear fell from her eye, one she hoped he didn't see in the dark as she tried turning her head to look out the window.

Do things that might piss her off, or come off weird?. Damn him he was worried about hurting her with his need for the blood. And it was only adding to the confusing disgusting guilt eating at her.

"There is nothing you could do to loose me. Nothing that would ever make me love you less." The grip on her hand tightened and she strengthed her own hold too. "Believe me when I say you're not doing anything wrong, understand me?"

"Hey." It was too late. Ruby might have been quick enough to think about trying to hide it from him, but she couldn't have forgotten that Sam was a Hunter. He saw better in the dark than most people did, considering how much time he actually spent in it. Brow furrowing in concern, Sam reached over with his free hand to unbuckle his belt. The line was moving slowly. He didn't worry about it so much as he shifted in his seat, edging closer to the side so that he was as close as he could physically be to Ruby without climbing out of the Impala and pulling her out from the other side. "What's wrong?"

She was reassuring him about not being able to lose her, yet she seemed to be upset about something. The tiny fleck of a tear that he had caught trailing down her cheek had proven as much to him. It was surprising, actually.

Sam had never known that demons could cry.

"Don't pretend that nothing is either," he said stubbornly, knowing that Ruby would immediately go for deny. "Tell me what's wrong. Or you're not getting any fries." That was the sort of thing that adults told their kids. Behave or you won't get any ice cream. Aside from the brief moment of humor Sam got out of the idea (Ruby was hundreds of years older than him and he was going for the treat deprivation tactic?), he figured it would be effective. Ruby really loved her fries.

Crap. How had he noticed?. Ruby sighed and shrugged and leaned back into her seat as he pulled himself closer to her. He seemed to know perfectly well that something was wrong. Only of course she couldn't tell him what, she couldn't ever tell him what.

"You wouldn't dare take away my fries" she tried, laughing off her worry but it wouldn't work. And she knew it wouldn't work. But she'd had to try, she needed time to form up another lie he'd believe. And truth be told even doing that was hurting her, even this simple lie was driving her crazy, all she did was lie to him.

"Its nothing really, just the general consenus of those who think they know better is that I'm just some hell bitch dragging you down to the pit with her, hurting you. And I don't know why you see me as anything different. You say you feel it?. Feel something different in me? Do you, cause no one could fake feelings like that, not when you can get to the very core of them, right?. Just...promise me that whatever happens you know I love you. You know that everything I ever might do, its for you"

"You don't want to hurt me," Sam said, sounding more than sure of himself. "I can tell. Not just 'cause I know you, but because when I felt you..." Sam tilted his head to the side, grateful for the blood boost that he now had to aid him. He gave it a bit of focus, reaching out to find Ruby with the same ability that he used to pull demons. He wanted to calm her. Sam didn't grip at her fiercely; he was as gentle as he could be with an ability that he was learning to perfect. "When I feel you...you're not like the others. You don't want me dead. You're not angry. It's a lot quieter when I'm with you than all the rest. Peaceful."

Sam kept up the contact for a short amount of time. He wanted to comfort her, but he also wanted to make sure that he didn't overcrowd Ruby at the same time. Sam squeezed at her hand, then let go of her mentally. "I know that you love me. I know that you'd never hurt me. I told you, Ruby: it doesn't matter what everyone else says or thinks. I know you. They don't. You're not who they think they are." He offered her a small smile. It wasn't massive, but it was still very strong. He was sure of himself. "You don't have to cry. I believe you. I believe in you."
