Brittany felt a little bad for the little girls. Well, she felt bad for Svetlana, too, but mostly for Fayina and Jelena. They were little and didn’t seem like they knew a whole lot of English. Plus? They didn’t have pets to keep them company.
“I’m still waiting for the seal to bring my cats here.” Brittany beamed, holding up her fingers which she had crossed for luck. She wasn’t sure if the free apartments allowed pets. Back in Ohio when her grandmother had to move to a nursing home she’d had to put her cat up for adoption as the home wouldn’t allow cats. Brittany thought it was the dumbest rule on the planet.
“I’d better go.” She gave a nod, still smiling in her way. If she waited much longer she would sweep the three Russians into a neverending bear-hug. As she was walking past, she couldn’t resist the urge to give both little girls pats on their shoulders. “It was nice meeting all of you.”
