Who: Brittany, Svetlana, and the miniature Russians.
What: Brittany has to hug everyone! She can't take it! She must hug the Russians!
Where:The apartment complex lobby
When: Early evening, present day
The past week or so had been a gigantic emotional whirlwind for Brittany. A big amalgamation of good, bad, and tired. It was nice to be in a world with her friends, but it was definitely more dangerous than Lima. There was no one threatening to turn Brittany into a scarecrow in Lima.
Today, though, seemed better, somehow. She couldn’t put her finger on what exactly it was, but she woke up feeling like she wanted to hug the world. It seemed like it was the most natural thing in the world. Any time she felt that nagging impulse she would wrap her arms around the person closest to her and give that person a nice squeeze. What was weird, she thought, was that everyone seemed to be reacting badly. At the very least they would back off and look at her like she was completely nuts. Weren’t hugs supposed to be good things?
She’d thought about it while at the park feeding cheez-its to the pigeons. How could affection be a bad thing? She was always making out with people back home and that was affection, wasn’t it. It was just one of those (many) things that left Brittany utterly puzzled. Since hugging strangers seemed to bring about bad results, Brittany made a resolution not to hug anyone on her way home. It was tough. She had seen a few people who really looked like they could have used an embrace. Still, when she found herself back in the complex’s lobby she felt a thrill you could only get from a small personal victory. That’s when she saw them.
Two little girls in close proximity to a woman she assumed was their mother. They were so cute! It just made her want to...
That was it. Brittany just couldn’t resist the urge. She swooped in and hugged both of them at the same time, then petting their hair for a second or two before stepping back and smiling.
