Who: The Doctor and OPEN! Romana
What: Showing up in Lawrence. Ten's slightly confused.
When: Monday evening.
Where: The Streets Of Lawrence. Doesn't that sound like a movie title?
Rating: Eh, probably not to high.

The Doctor had been flying along in his TARDIS, nice and content, on his way to his next stop, when suddenly it started jerking around in a way that it really shouldn't. But it wasn't the first time it had started shuddering like that. She was getting old and sometimes she couldn't hold herself together the way she used to, after all. And it wasn't the first time she'd gone off course either.

The TARDIS landed where she wanted that time, and with a bit more jostling around than was usual. Enough that when she was finally still, The Doctor found himself on the floor by the console. "Wot?!" He said softly, pulling himself up by the ledge before he started going over the screens. Oddly enough, everything seemed normal this time. There wasn't even any reason to bang on it with his mallet, and just then he found that a bit frustrating.

He ran his hands through his hair as he made his way to the door, egar to figure out just why he was wherever he was. He landed in an alley, and that was good. While the TARDIS had her own difenses that made people's eyes slide right over her, usually not noticing anything out of the ordinary, it was always best to tuck her away where there was even less of a chance of her being noticed. Quickly, The Doctor made his way out of the alley and to the street, being careful to look around as he moved. There was no telling why his girl had picked this place to land, but she had, and there was bound to be a reason. There always was.

At first glance down the street, he decided this was somewhere in America. Nowhere else was laid out quite like this. But it seemed to be a part that he hadn't been to before.

It was only seconds before The Doctor made his way over to a nearby newspaper box and bent over to check the paper that was on display, putting on his brainy specs in the process. Lawrence, Kansas. Nope, he'd never been there before. And it was 2009. Well, both of those were a good ways off from where he had been headed.

But one thing was different from what he expected. He could sense there was another Gallifreyan there, and that could be very bad.

"Book smarts hardly count," The Doctor said, a teasing lift to his voice. He was feeling much better now that the topic had been shifted from the Dalek's here in town, though a part of his mind was still working out what to do with them.

"There's no one else to do it," he added, shrugging a bit. "I'm the last of us when I'm from. Still not sure what to make of you being alive again, not that I'm not grateful for it. But anyway, it's down to me. Besides, you know how I love the excitement that comes with it." And that was definitely true. There was nothing like the feeling of saving people, or of running for your life. It was safe to call The Doctor a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

"Sort of red. Big wings, jaw like a bulldog."

"Book smarts have to count!" she insisted with the same teasing tone, Typical him really, and oh how she'd missed it, things between them had gotten strained during the war but it seemed her living again had removed that somewhat. Or maybe they just weren't talking about anything that had happened on Gallifrey near the end. She was fine with that.

And he was the last again.

So Martha had been right and the Master was dead. Good. He deserved nothing less...only...he hadn't regenerated, Romana wondered why but dared not ask, she wasn't going to bring him up.

"You don't have to carry the burden alone you know...you have people like Miss Jones, and well, me for as long as we're here. And I know you like it...the running. I remember well, the running. But you're not alone now, understand?"

She narrowed her eyes slightly in some confusion,

"Wings...where'd they pick up wings?"

"Oh, they don't count at all," The Doctor teased, grinning a bit wider at the Time Lady. "Book smarts alone can't get you out of half of the situations I've found myself in." Really, when it came to most of those situations it was less that The Doctor somehow ended up in them and more that he got himself into a good bit of trouble nearly every day.

"No one can do this forever," he said simply when the subject turned back to the fact that he traveled alone. "Aside from me, that is. Eventually people have to live their own lives." And, yes. It did seem like many of his old companions he had run into after they parted ways had continued to lead a life of adventure and hunting for aliens, but at least they were with their families. Even Rose, locked away in another dimension, was with her family. "And I'm never alone for that long anyway, you know that." He added a grin to go along with that last bit.

And those blasted trait thieves. "Apparently they conquered Bessan. I wish I could have stopped it."

"They count a little. I've managed to help you sometimes with my book smarts haven't you" She shook her head, she missed the trouble, missed dealing with all sorts of craziness, and she missed the running.

Oh how she'd missed the running.

"I know, but I feel now like the fact that you're so alone is my fault. Because I asked you to do...I said if it got to the point where they'd win..."

She trailed off, she really really hated talking about the war. It hurt her more than she'd expected, especially when it was to him, and she still had in her heart the guilt for what she'd done in freeing the Master from the Eye of Harmony.

"Do you ever resent me for it?" she asked, unable to stop herself.
