Zuko was staring at the scroll. The characters on the page seemed to be blurring together into a misshapen blob. He'd probably been staring at it for a good twenty minutes now. Fire Lord Zuko didn't give up on things, he pushed himself until he couldn't stand it anymore. He'd reached his point, most definitely. He probably wasn't going to be able to get any work done. He'd been spreading himself thin as it was. There was so much to do, he had to prove himself, he couldn't have a moments rest or a moment's weakness. Zuko had to be strong for his people, he had to be strong for many reasons, but it was easier now than it had been in his younger days. He had his Uncle, still, and he had his friends. Who would have thought years ago that Zuko would be such good friends with the Avatar of all people? They were a great deal of help. Helping the Avatar restore the world to peace was hard work, but over the past few years they had made a great many changes. Zuko and Aang had helped one another and they supported one another a great deal of the time. This was the only way that their world was going to flourish and get to the point of peace.
Deciding that it was time to take a break from the scroll, Zuko brought his hands up to his eyes and rubbed them before standing. His vision was blurry and his eyes were stinging. His robes were heavy, but he'd grown used to them from wearing them day in and day out. Pacing his chamber silently, Zuko found himself at the window, looking out at the moonlight, it reminded him of a great many things. He could remember kidnapping the Avatar, he could remember Katara threatening him, and a great deal of other things. He had done many things in the guise of night and under the moonlight to his friends--before they had been friends. He was still young, but felt much older with everything he had been through. There was always a weight on his shoulders. Always. He still doubted that he was what was best for his people. He brooded over every decision he made, wondering if he was doing the right thing, even now. Uncle always told him that it was a sign of a true leader.
Even Fire Lords needed sleep, though. Zuko quickly stipped down to just his sleeping pants, his chest bare before he slipped into bed and extinguished the candles that had been lit. It was going to be a long day tomorrow. It was always a long day tomorrow. Closing his eyes, Zuko found that his head was full, he was determined to sleep, though, and not worry about what he had to do the next day. He didn't need to think in his only hours of rest. He needed the rest to have his mind fresh and clear for tomorrow. Antagonizing himself over his decisions got him nowhere. After a long twenty minutes, Zuko managed to doze off, his breathing even, but the sleep light. It would only take the tiniest thing to wake him up. Zuko had trained himself to do that much from his time chasing Aang. It was a pity he couldn't sleep harder, it might have actually helped him have a completely restful sleep.
It seemed that the young Fire Lord was destined not to get that fitful rest that he so deserved, though. One second he was asleep and in his bed and the next cold was seeping into his very bones. Zuko jerked awake with a start, only to realize that he was lying on the cold ground in a place that was most definitely not his bedroom. Zuko was fully awake and aware now. He automatically was on his feet and there was no scrambling to how he got that way. Despite the shivers that he was suppressing Zuko was ready for anything. Bare feet, bare chest, and all. He didn't know where he was, but it was most definitely not the Fire Nation. It didn't ever get this cold there. What had happened? Had he been drugged and kidnapped? Zuko doubted it. There would be no reason to drug him and kidnap him. Anyone that would want him out of the way would kill him far before they would kidnap him. Then, there was the fact that Zuko would have woken up if anyone had entered his chamber. What was this!?
Shivering, Zuko took a moment to pause and sucked in a breath, a calming breath, feeling that fire in his belly. As he released the breath smoke drifted from his nostrils, he was warming himself. He needed to get inside somewhere, he needed to acquire proper clothing. The Fire Lord had no idea who he could trust and who he couldn't, though. His feet began to move, his body acutely aware and ready for a fight. Every few steps he would take those calming and warming breaths, smoke streaming out of his nose as he let it out. He must have looked quite strange, a half naked man with smoke coming from his nostrils and a large scar over his left eye that was quite large. He wore his scar proudly now, though. His steps were careful and his arms were pulled up, he was ready to fight if necessary.
