He knew that asking about her well-being was always going to come off as a joke to her in situations like these. Sam couldn't prevent himself from having those concerns; he was so used to treating most people with caution and respect that he sometimes forgot that Ruby wasn't as breakable as all the rest were. He supposed that was because she had such a strong grip on his heart. He worried too much over her.
The relief at the verification that she was all right did not last as long as it normally would have. It was hard to keep one emotion going when the next turned out to be a direct result of the teasing kiss that Ruby had pressed onto his lips. He smiled a bit against her mouth, his amusement developing from the simple fact that she had easily caught him out in his fib. He couldn't lie to her, even when there wasn't such obvious evidence like the frost on his jacket involved. She was too good and Sam didn't even think he had it in him. "Am not," he responded, even though they both already knew that he was.
Then, just like that, she was off. One long, lingering kiss and Ruby had managed to switch his emotions from hyped over their little competition to eager and excited for what was likely to head his way soon enough. Glancing over his shoulder, almost as though he were daring anyone to try and come between him and his demon, Sam turned and followed Ruby out across the ice.
And, of course, she was ahead. How would she not be? Ruby had left him stunned and excited and kind of turned on all at once.
She had cheated and Sam, surprisingly, thought that it was sort of attractive. Also fitting. Particularly for her.
