Who? Dean, Ruby, and Fluffball the cat
What? Meeting the kitten
Where? Ruby and Sam's apartment
When? This afternoon
Rating? Probably nothing serious, yo.

It was weird, being on decent enough terms with a demon that he was going over to her place to go meet her kitten - sure, it was Sam’s place and Sam’s kitten, too, but that didn’t change the fact that the demon was involved. She was involved, all right - she was dating Sammy, and it seemed like they were really kind of serious...

He wanted to be happy for Sam, he really did. He was trying to be, trying not to want to tear into the demon girl every time he saw her - it was instinct, by now. Kill or be killed, hurt or be hurt, it was everything he didn’t want to think about and everything he couldn’t stop thinking about, and it was something he needed to change, if Sam was going to keep seeing her.

And he was pretty sure Sam wasn’t going to drop her at any point in the near future, unless she turned out, you know, evil. They were living together, they had a cat together, they had that whole weird domestic thing going on that he hadn’t thought demons were capable of - they certainly hadn’t been very domesticated down in the pit - and it all felt like it was meant to be permanent. Which was fine, whatever made Sam happy, but it was still really weird, too. Unsettling.

Ruby’d said he should come over and see the kitten - like they were normal people, normal almost-in-laws who did normal things like that, instead the of hunter and demon they were, who should have been trying to kill each other. She’d practically insisted on him coming over - promised to leave his car alone, and was he ever going to say no to that? He already was more than a little disturbed by the idea of there having been even one incident in the car - a repeat performance was out of the question.

He knocked on the apartment door, and his instincts were screaming for him to get out of here now, that it was a trap, that he should exorcise or kill the bitch as soon as she opened the door... but he wasn’t going to listen to any of that, he couldn’t, for Sam’s sake. He didn’t know if his brother would ever forgive him if he killed her, and he was pretty sure he didn’t want to take that risk. So he stayed where he was, and he didn’t reach for a knife or a gun or the flask of Holy Water he kept on his person at all times, and though the Latin words were on the tip of his tongue, he knew he wouldn’t use them, wouldn’t send Ruby back to Hell unless she tried something.

Well this was, unsettling. Dean Winchester was calling over to her apartment and she was going to what? Give him coffee. Let him hold the cat. All of it. All very 'family' or whatever. It was disconcerting and she wasn't sure she knew what to make of any of it. She'd invited him, and maybe she was insane with Azazel here now but she needed to be what Sam deserved, the girlfriend. The one that was fine with his family. And for her own sake, she needed to be normal. She needed not to think about the side of her that Azazel knew. No, that had to stay dorment, had to stay buried and hidden for as long as she could manage. And she supposed inviting Dean Winchester over to meet the cat was good for that.

Fighting back every instinct she had as she heard the knock, Ruby got to her feet, the kitten following along behind her to investigate this new sound. She opened the door and did what she could to remain as friendly as she figured she should be. She didn't so much smile or anything though. That'd be weird. Too weird. "Hi" she said, moving back to let him in while keeping the cat from escaping "You better come in I suppose." she told him closing the door behind him as soon as he had. "And you should probably sit. I'll get a beer, do you want a beer?"

Yeah this was officially weird.

"That's Fluffball" she said from the kitchen as the kitten bounded over toward Dean. She liked new things, and he was new. Very new. "Sam got her for me as a gift." What did one say to someone who the last time he'd really seen her, he had heard her screaming about how much she wanted to rip his flesh from his bones. And she had back then, she really had. Even in some ways probably still did.

When the door opened, habit had him offering Ruby something like a bright smile that was more fake than anything genuine, an act like it was when he was interviewing witnesses on a job. He was good at it, good at looking at-ease when he was anything but. Not perfect, though, and it probably showed through - his unease, the fact that he wasn’t entirely comfortable. It was in his posture, in the way his smile was strained and too bright, in the way his hands were fidgeting restlessly at his sides.

>"Hi ... You better come in I suppose."

Right, and they were off to a great start - if by great you meant horribly awkward, anyway. He entered the apartment, careful not to step on the orange little blob of fur on the floor as he did.

>"And you should probably sit. I'll get a beer, do you want a beer?"

A beer sounded awesome right now, really. Even if he didn’t think he’d be better suited for doing this whole thing drunk (hey, it’d be less awkward, at least), it would give him something to do that wasn’t stare at her waiting for her to do something horrible and reveal that she really was evil and out to hurt Sam, or fight the urge to go for the Holy Water whether she did or not. “Sounds great,” he responded, still with the fake smile that was only a tiny fraction more real, this time, and he headed towards the couch while she moved off.

>"That's Fluffball... Sam got her for me as a gift."

“Sounds like Sammy... Kid always was the girl in the family.”

With Ruby out of the room, his attention turned to the kitten she was talking about - who was heading his way, looking pretty curious. As it came closer, he leaned down and let it sniff at his fingers (it probably smelled like motor oil, he’d been making sure the car was working okay, hadn’t really had time to properly wash his hands yet since), then scooped it up when it seemed to decide not to rip his fingers open.

Beer she could do. She found the beer, cooled and ready to drink and opened two before walking back toward the rather amusing sight of her kitten jumping all over Dean. Amusing but at the same time she still wasn't quite sure how it had come to this, all domestic, being nice to the guy who would very possibly be her brother in law one day. The idea probably still would have horrified the guy even if he was trying. And she had to admit he really was. She appreciated it, though she knew it would only last until he knew the truth about Sam and the blood addiction. Then she was pretty sure they'd be back to square 'kill the demon bitch'

"Gotta argue the girl in the family part" she said by way of retort, "Not gonna list my reasons why, pretty sure it'd mentally scar you. You get my agreement on your car being amazing, if now sadly off limits." she added, mostly for kicks. "And the music, I love the boy but it does make me sad inside, which apparently is sort of the point. Can't help but think music is supposed to be fun and there are tragic operas with more character."

She could keep it to topics they agreed on while drinking beers and watching Fluffball be overly cute. It was probably the best way to do this without either of them snapping and killing each other. If he got annoying she'd command the cat to scratch. Cat might not do it, turned out even witches couldn't control the damn things, and Fluffball had a mind of her own.

Fluffball thought he was meant to be climbed all over, apparently. He let her, turning his head to watch her when she got up on his shoulder, staring at him like he was something fascinating. Ruby came back, then, and he looked over, raising an eyebrow. “Is the climbing thing a compliment, or should I be offended, here?”

He was going to ignore the part about Sam not being a girl, thanks. Even just thinking up a response to that was kind of mentally scarring him, because he knew what she was implying and that was one of the last things he ever wanted to think about, thanks. Freakin’ nasty. Moving on.

“Damn straight she’s off-limits.” He didn’t much like the idea of a demon being all up in his car at all, let alone... doing things with his brother, because again, that was just gross. “I’ll put traps up,” he added, tone somewhere between joking and threatening. He wasn’t entirely sure which he meant it as, either.

It was weird, talking to Ruby like she was just some girl, just Sam’s girlfriend - like she wasn’t a demon, like she wasn’t something he’d spent his life thinking was bad, wrong, evil that needed to be destroyed. It was like everything he’d thought he’d known was upside-down, twisted around and backwards and everyone else was just cool with it. Or, okay, not everyone but the majority were, and they seemed to expect - or at least hope - that everyone else would be. He wasn’t sure he ever would be.

>"And the music, I love the boy but it does make me sad inside, which apparently is sort of the point. Can't help but think music is supposed to be fun and there are tragic operas with more character."

“Ugh,” he waved a hand slightly, making a face, “Don’t even get me started on that crap. Freakin’ garbage, all of it. I don’t know where he got it from. Could’a sworn I taught him better than that.”

Weird as it was it was clear the kitten had made a friend in Dean, she didn't normally get so friendly so quick, more curious. But Dean must have reminded her of Sam or something. Only, obviously the shortbus version. "She likes you" she explained, "She'll never leave you alone unless she decides I'm interesting again, sometimes she gets confused at my scent I think, I'm her owner and good to her and everything but there's still bad there y'know? Scent of hell. With Sam not here right now, you're the closest thing maybe. That and you're paying her attention and she loves that"

The traps in the Impala wouldn't have suprised her even a little, it was very Dean and she figured that he probably would. "You don't have to, Its not going to happen again mostly cause I like living and it was cramped in that back seat, you know how tall he is." She probably could have left the description out again but she was still a demon, had to get her evil out somewhere. And since they were mocking Sam quite exceptionally on the music side of things she had to balance it out a little. Only fair really.

"Between us we can change him y'know. We'll have to coordinate what we use but we can do that right, we're clearly awesome enough. Or I am, you'll do." Joking aside though this was just one of those situations she didn't understand completely, and was pretty sure Dean didn't either. "So, scale of one to ten, how much are you hating this?" she asked finally. "When you get past the jokes I mean."
