WHO: Gwen Raiden and Lindsey McDonald
WHAT: The thief and the lawyer arrive in Kansas
WHEN: Evening
WHERE: Wolfram and Hart to start and then just outside Kansas
RATING: TBD but these two get snarky so I doubt it's kid safe!
STATUS: In Progress

Her teacher always used to say, expect the unexpected. Of course this was when he'd been training her for her extra curricular activities as a highly specialized thief, but Gwen Raiden had taken the lesson to heart in all walks of life. Even so, even she had been surprised when she'd returned to LA from her Tahiti holiday home to find former hero freak, Angel, running her main source of clients. Curious to see how this all played out, the electric thief had stayed quietly on the sidelines, watching events and keeping a steady stream of work for herself. She had hacked into Angel's e mail account and was browsing through his inbox when a name she hadn't seen in years appeared on the screen, invoking a mild 'huh' of shock. Lindsey McDonald. Last she'd heard of him he'd left town after the evil hand thing. Left town and never bothered saying good bye to her. A trend it appeared he'd continued with his returning to LA. Gwen shook her head, annoyed, as she noted where Angel was holding him. Time, maybe, to visit him and let him know how irritated she was in person.

Considering Angel knew much of what she could do, Gwen was almost insulted at how easy it was to get past the Wolfram and Hart security to Lindsey's cell. A quick flash of the sparks was enough to trip the door lock and get her inside the room.

He looked as she remembered him, hair a little longer, but still with that arrogant air about him. She opened her mouth to fire off some sarcastic retort when something shifted and the world began to blur. Gwen closed her eyes a moment before the spinning stopped and she dared crack one and then both open again, taking in the new surroundings.

A town.

A definitely not LA town.

She folded her arms and arched an eyebrow at McDonald.

"What did you just do?"

Lindsey hadn't expected Raiden, Lindsey hadn't expected much of anything what with the situation he'd found himself in. Pulled out of hell to save the collective asses of Angel and his little band from the Black Thorn of all things. It was sometimes funny to think of just how screwed they all were.

Raiden had busted into his cell, which would have suprised him if it was anyone else but the girl could manage a lot, and she looked pissed, which given he'd high tailed it from the city after his really rather impressive middle finger to the partners, and had sort of, completely, maybe, forgotten to let her know, it was no wonder.

He was waiting for the bitching, or the shock, with her he was never sure, when the world moved around him. The cell was gone, hell Wolfram and Hart was suddenly gone.

Raiden wasn't though, and she was blaming him,

"What did I do!"

He looked around curiously, trying to gauge some kind of surroundings, working out where they were, a passing car with a Kansas numberplate pointed them in a direction but it could have been passing through.

"Bet Angel did it, somehow."

"Oh come on," Gwen rolled her eyes. "This is so like you, some over elaborate escape attempt. What, you didn't think I'd come and bust you out?"

She stared at him defiantly for a moment before another car, again with a Kansas numberplate passed by and she shrugged.

"Or Angel did it. Which probably means he screwed something up again."

How that vampire had come to run Wolfram and Hart, she'd never understand. She tugged her glove back into place before she sighed.

"You realize that even if Angel did it, it's probably somehow your fault too, right?"

"Wasn't planning on escaping babe" he told her with a shrug "Lost all my pretty tricks before I got a one way ticket to a hell dimension, hell they won't even let E..."

Aw hell Eve. He didn't want to leave her completely alone with the vultures that made up Angel's team, and all their plans would come to nothing unless he could get back to her, he'd made promises to the girl and created by the Partners or not she'd helped him out through all this.

So he was stuck, in what might be Kansas. Least it was with Raiden even if she did probably want to zap him.

"How is it my fault if Angel did it?, Look can we just get the hell back to LA. You got your cell on you, call the office. Deal with the ever bleating vampire PA and get Angel on the line, tell him to send a chopper for us, and tell him he's an incompatant ass"

Probably they should make sure the chopper was on its way before calling the CEO an ass, but Angel wouldn't be suprised.

Eve. Gwen had to fight to suppress the scowl at the almost mention of the Liaison. Rumor seemed to be right then, Lindsey and her had a thing going. The thief couldn't stand the annoyingly insincere bitch.

"Because if Angel did this, then it was probably because of you, babe," she smirked cheekily. "Clue number one being that it happened in your cell and all."

Still, she shrugged and pulled out her cell, dialing the number for the blonde ditz of a PA.

'We're sorry, your call cannot be completed as dialed'

"What the..." Gwen frowned as she tried the number again, as well as the front desk and her own home number for good measure. "Ok, this is messed up, none of my numbers are going through."

"Nope, much as it hurts him inside he needs me, and he knows he needs me. He wouldn't have dumped me in Kansas of all places."

The next car that passed, an Oklahoma reg meant he was supressing his own scowl. He'd never wanted to be back South and with his home state only one over he really really didn't like it. And Raiden was now saying she couldn't contact the office.

Or anywhere.

"What? No, let me try"

He took the phone from her gloved hand, not sure what he could do different but deciding to try anyway. He dialled his apartment, Eve, who would always pick up for him, and even his sister one state down. Nothing. Not a damn thing.

"Maybe this wasn't Angel" he said as calmly as he could manage. "What the hells going on Raiden?"

"He needs you," Gwen echoed, her eyebrows rising. "Arrogant much?"

If the cars weren't lying, they were most definitely near to Lindsey's neck of the woods, something Gwen knew must be bugging the hell out of him. Still, that wasn't an excuse in her mind for the way he took her phone from her hand and started dialing.

She glared at him as he tried, watching his frustration grow, before he finally reached the same conclusion she had and she had the chance to snatch the phone back, swatting him on the back of the head as she did.

"Ya think?" Angel wasn't smart enough for this, leaving them out in the middle of no where with no way of communicating with home.

"I've got no freaking clue, babe. I swear, this is the last time I ever try and help you out."

Arrogant, yes as it happend, very. She should lnow that by now.

"I know things he was too dumb to ever work out on his own. His people figured that out, so yeah Raiden, he needs me"

She took the phone back, and hit him, she hit him. Crazy woman. But the point was made, they were stuck, in Kansas, on their own. In Kansas.

Kansas??

"Don't remember asking for it, but we're both here now, so how's about we work out what city we're nearest to, get to it, get to its airport and get the hell out of dodge, back to civilisation."

He hated the South, all the Southern States, they reminded him of home, and he hated thinking about home.

"You got walking shoes on or am I gonna wind up carrying them"

They could hotwire a truck or something if they came across one parked.

"Always knew there was some crazy sexual tension going on between you two," she retorted with a smirk, remembering well how to wind Lindsey up.

"And you were so needing my help, for the record," she looked pointedly at him before again focusing on the rather insane situation at hand. Plan get to an airport had its merits so she nodded before glaring at him again.

"I'll show you just how good these shoes are, wanna feel how well they kick?" As much as her outfit, her customary red leather, screamed impractical, the fact was she, as ever, was kitted out to work in an instant if she needed and her boots were comfortable enough to walk all day in, as well as looking damn good. Advantage of being rich, she could afford practicality and style.

Lindsey whirrled around from the walking utter horror in his eyes. List of things he didn't want to ever imagine, that right there, number one.

"Raiden!" he yelled disgustedly. "What've I told you about how not funny that joke gets"

She went on about her shoes for a while and Lindsey would have zoned out except she had threatened to kick, and she could kick when she needed to, even with the fancy new training he'd gotten it had nothing on Raiden and something probably with steel in the caps.

"Kansas" he repeated again by way of confused conversation, of all the places on the map...

As Lindsey turned, he ended up right in front of her, causing Gwen's smirk to widen.

"Ok, not true, it's most definitely funny if you're me."

There was a pause as he was clearly thinking of her threat to kick him and, she hoped, remembering all the times she'd gone through with such a threat. And probably working out that, yes, her boots were custom made for her so were designed with fighting in mind.

"Yeah, Linds, Kansas, well done for keeping up so well. You know, yelling about it isn't gonna get us home and I don't think clicking our heels together three times is exactly gonna work here, Toto."

"And thats not a good thing Raiden, now can we get going"

He was sulking, he knew he was sulking, but mention of Angel had the wonderful effect of pissing him off even in the best of moods, and since he'd just been pulled to friggin Kansas of all places, he wasnt in the best of moods.

"That makes you Dorothy babe, Or maybe the wicked witch, not worked that out yet, keep an eye out for flying houses"

"I find being me a great thing, McDonald, every single day."

Still, she began walking, deliberately walking ahead of him with a swagger, most of her bravado in place to hide the fact she was more than a little freaked out. This was new, even by her standards.

She turned back with a glance over her shoulder and a smirk.

"I'll get you my pretty," she put on the voice before she laughed. "Admit it, you've missed me."

"And thats why you're special" he told her in a mock drawl, he didn't precicely mind her walking ahead of him, she knew how to swagger. Not that he should be watching Raiden swagger, he needed to get back to LA.

But dammed if he hadn't missed Gwen.

"I did, I'll admit it I did. Push came to shove and I had to leave the city, pretty much right away, and the less you were connected with me the better for you and your career."

It was as deep as he was about to get any time soon.

"There are so, so many reasons why I'm special Linds," Gwen retorted with a laugh, putting that extra hint of swagger in.

"Ha, I knew it," she turned, still walking as she faced him, a look of distinct triumph on her face. "And I'm not too proud to admit, I missed you too."

That was pretty much all that needed to be said beyond a simple "You know, a postcard wouldn't have killed you."

He rolled his eyes at the extra swagger, soon she was going to cross into out and out silly.

"I've seen your file Raiden. I've added notes."

And then she was on his case again about vanishing, actually managing to make him feel a little harsh about it too, he probably could have...

"They tend not to have postcards where I was babe, what did you want me to do, have it delivered by Mountin Goat Express mail"

"Babe, don't be modest, you created my file," Gwen corrected, offering up a smile with a hint of nostalgia. Those had been the days, when they'd been young and ambitious. Now they were simply slightly less young and actually more ambitious. Time had a weirdness that way, she suspected.

"Totally," she nodded emphatically. "I'd have given the goat a little treat for a job well done and everything. Like an apple. Do goats like apples, or is that just horses?" She frowned as she considered it. "Come on, country boy, you're supposed to know this stuff."

Well yes, he had, or at least he'd supervised. Gwen Raiden, Genetic Freak and the Best Thief he'd ever had on contract, best he'd ever heard of either. So good he'd helped her with the writing of said contract. Her soul was still her own, more than he could say for his.

"I might have had a hand in it. I did add notes though" he joked, seeing the starts of the city in the distance. He didn't know much about Lawrence other than it wasn't Kansas City or Topeka. He didn't even know if it had an airport. But it would have some kinda transport to one of the other two. It was a start.

And now Raiden was calling him Country Boy.

"Never did care much either way Raiden. Goats probably tasted better?"

"I hope they were pretty notes, to remind yourself of just how much of a bonus recruiting me got you," Gwen smirked before looking forward towards the lights of the city. They'd had some good times, back in the day, and it hadn't escaped her notice that she'd been lucky that it was Lindsey who got her into the ranks of Wolfram and Hart, not Lilah Morgan. If the Queen Bitch had gotten her claws in, fun phrases like 'perpetuity clauses' would have been floating around. As it was, Lindsey managed to keep her largely freelance.

"Finally, I was beginning to think we were never going to get there," she almost groaned before she glanced over her shoulder at Lindsey. "Not that my shoes were hurting or anything, for the record."

She held a warning finger up, almost daring him to contradict her.

"You ever care much either way about anything McDonald?"

"They were, trust me"

He'd made a lot of money off Raiden, but having found her dancing in the seediest of Strip Joints he'd grown to care about the thief. So he'd made sure her contract was legit, it had taken him a month to iron out all the unpleasent things.

He wasn't actually going to be snarky about her shoes. He had planned just to smirk but she even preempted that. She knew him too well.

The next question showed that better than he'd like.

"Lets not go down that road just now babe, alright?"

Gwen looked more than a little bit smug, proud of her achievements. Possibly an odd career choice to be proud of, but considering where she'd started, she thought she deserved some bragging. And despite her attitude with him, she was grateful for everything he'd done for her, from getting her out of the strip club to sorting out her contract.

So, just for once, she was going to cut him some slack.

"Fine," she gave him a scrutinizing look. "Consider that road a dead end just now."

She kicked a small stone along the road, watching it bounce a few feet before it stopped.

"How you been anyway?"

He was grateful for the change of subject, he didn't much like talking about himself, or where he'd come from, any of it. And the question she'd asked, what he cared about, he wasn't sure he knew how to answer that.

But what he could answer with a wry laugh was the question of how he'd been.

"Hell dimension, courtasy of Angel and Cordelia Chase, played a few games with the good Champion, games I don't think he appreciated a whole lot. Anyway in the end it wasn't enough and the Partners, well, they were pissed at me. So how you think I've been?"

Gwen actually stopped in her tracks, a look of cold fury descending over her face.

"A hell dimension?" A nearby streetlamp flared brightly for a moment before the glass exploded. "Angel left that one off his computer records." There was a slight pause before she belated realized she should explain.

"I hack his computer a lot, see what he's been up to. And he didn't mention a freaking hell dimension. How? Why?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]thornypath

Lindsey looked up amused at the exploding streetlamp, Raiden did do the obvious shows of emotion occasionally and things had a interesting habit of exploding when she did. But he still wasn't gonna talk about it.

"How, he got rid of my protections, They got the info on how out of Eve and then him and Chase, and he beat me, reasonably fairly too. As for why, well I'd been messing with him, with Spike, trying to undermine him, making Spike think he was the Champion in the Scrolls of Aberjjan, making Angel doubt himself...and unleashing that nice little Failsafe in the basement, I ever tell you about that?"

He allowed himself a smirk at that one, would have been fun if it had have worked.

"He sent you to a hell dimension," Gwen repeated, her anger still not lessened despite the exploding lamp. "And you were going to mention this to me, when exactly?"

She shook her head, furious. She'd heard enough stories about the dimensions owned by the Senior Partners so she could guess that the 'hell' part wasn't under exaggerated.

"I'm gonna kill him," she seethed. "I'm gonna spark him to freak death. No one gets to send you to a hell dimension, except me if I'm really mad at you." She glowered before registering what else Lindsey had said.

"There's a failsafe in the basement?"

"I was going to not mention it" he told her calmly "Mostly for this exact reason, you like your neutrality way too much and helping me would have put you square in his sights, which at that point was not a place you needed to be"

He'd thought it all through, including keeping her out of it, besides she might not have agreed with the lengths he had been willing to go to, messing with Spike how he had been, calling himself Doyle and claiming to want to set the peroxide blonde vamp up as Champion.

And she hadn't needed to know about the failsafe.

"Of course theres a failsafe. It was Wolfram and Hart, you think they didn't have every contingancy planned for, including Angel stepping out of line, no babe they were ready, Eve clued me in on the whole thing and how best to use it, so, I tried to use it. Didnt work" he shrugged "Obviously"

"What, you think I wouldn't have had your back?" Gwen arched an eyebrow. "Yeah, I like my neutrality, I'm not denying that, but I'd have gone up against Angel for you, you should know that. I don't care about being in his sights or not, there's no way he could take me down." She smirked, with no small amount of pride. "He ever mention the time I totally kicked his ass?"

Fun times. Also, the kissing part, but Gwen suspected that Lindsey wouldn't approve of that quite so much.

But then he had to mention the annoying one again and the thief scowled.

"Ever think that maybe it was because you didn't get the best Intell out there?"

That fire, thats what had drawn him to her back in that strip club, the attitude. She'd have stood and defended him against Angel he knew that, which is why he'd left her out of the loop.

"Nah I know you'd have had my back. But I didn't want to involve you. You didn't need to get caught up in all of that. Besides, it was me against Angel in the end, way it should be, thats how its gonna end one day, implying of course we get out of Kansas any time this century"

He knew she had no time for the Liason to the Senior Partners but he'd known Eve, maybe better than anyone ever had.

"She was on my side Raiden, she was, risks that girl took for me? She gave up immortality, she took that risk and ended up paying for it, so, look I know you hate her, but don't push that angle right now okay?"

"I'm gonna kick his ass," she stated, in her extra special 'don't mess with me' tone. "You're not the boss of me McDonald and you don't get to decide what I do or do not need to get caught up in."

Ick. Kansas. Not one of her favorite places in the world, barely any business for the likes of her. Suddenly she missed her luxury houses around the world.

"Never said I hated her," she half scowled. "Just drives me cray is all. Doesn't have the class Morgan did and if she keeps calling me 'sweetie' I'm gonna slap her."

She was a pain in the ass, she was being a pain in the ass on his behalf and all, but even so. Pain in the ass.

"Raiden just humour me and when we get out of this, stay out of it, its not exactly gonna get pleasent with whats coming, and once they figure it out completely...well I don't want you getting caught up in it all"

Eve, admittidly she did use the 'sweetie' librally, and only when people were around she wanted to annoy. She was a whole different ballgame than Lilah too, and he cared about her.

"In fact, humour me on her too, please babe" he tried, he was too tired and still wary and confused about their new surroundings to defend Eve too.

Gwen held up her hands in mock surrender. "Fine, alright, whatever. See, fingers not even crossed."

Well, there was no need to mention what she was doing with her toes. She had no intention of sitting back and letting the only guy who'd ever been good to her get dragged to hell. Again.

"And yeah, you wanna be with her, be with her," she rolled her eyes. "Just think you could do better is all."
