=======================

Sarah had felt an odd sense of deja vu at first, when she had seen a few of the same face in public.. but fortunately she had rushed back into the apartments before risking a confrontation if one was going to happen. It was seeing more than one person with the same face that had gotten to her. Such a thing wasn't uncommon where she was from. It usually meant that it was machines posing as humans. Infiltration. Blending in, tracking their target, and then eliminating it. But several things had impressed upon her that her initial perception had been wrong. For one, the man seemed more human-like than cyborg. Plus there seemed to be emotion. Bit of a creepy feeling, of course, but emotion. There was feeling. Nothing could copy that as far as she knew. And she had been hearing about the man from reading comments on the boards. Similar to the terminators, this Master had replaced every single human on the planet... everyone except arrivals and the natives that helped them. World leaders, generals, soldiers, politicians, normal citizens, everyone was the same man. And the idea of what that person would do with all sorts of weapons that very likely was in arm's reach... well. Maybe it was best not to think on that too much. She decided that going out wasn't the best thing to do for a while. Hopefully the kitchen would remain stocked for a while. Perhaps she could go rustle up some food, maybe even cook something for other people if they were hungry. Sarah would swear not to burn any pot roast or other meat this time.

But to be fair, she was a bit preoccupied with an urgent phone call that last time. Still.. Cameron should have opened the oven then. She recalled the cyborg protector's words, telling her exactly, down to the second, how long ago the roast should have been removed. But this was different. She could focus on the task at hand. Like getting breakfast. That would be simple enough, she thought, since she was actually a waitress in another life. So, after waking up earlier and taking care of some other things, Sarah had made her way to the kitchen. "Now, let's see," she said as she approached the cupboards. There was cereal, cookies, soup, bread, oil, and probably a bunch of other things. Then something caught her eye. "Pancakes.. alright, that will do fine," she said with a slight smile, taking it and setting it down on the counter. Then she got other things she needed such as.. spatula, frying pan, plate, syrup, spoon, mixing bowl, and butter. She had made the pancake batter first. As she started to cook now, using butter first and then pouring the mix into the pan, it seemed like second nature to her. Pancakes she could most definitely do. It wasn't long before she flipped them accordingly, cooked them til golden brown and had eventually had a series of four on her plate. Seemed to be enough for a meal. Unless.. well, one never knew when you'd have company in this complex, so she glanced to the door to see if she was still alone. If she wasn't? Well, then she would just simply make a few extra if anyone else wanted some as well.

Claudio was just getting a hang of the whole 'new world' thing. The apartment, for example, was nice. It was quiet compared to his own house in the morning. There was no clamour of the twins, no Josephine to argue over who gets the car, no dad dragging his feet back from the night shift, no smell of breakfast from his mom...

Mmm, breakfast. Now that seemed wonderful.

Claudio'd awoken to a large rumbling that his sleepy mind had dreamed was a huge earthquake, only to realize that it was his stomach. He'd barely eaten the night before, too off-put by the streets outside being full of the same person. Groaning in protest at the sunlight that seeped through his curtains, he placed a pillow over his head.

It didn't last long, and with a grumpy sigh he sat up: he was awake and now he was absolutely starving. Grabbing his T-shirt and jeans, Claudio slipped them on and haphazardly shuffled towards his door. Instead of opening it he simply phased through it, groggily rubbing his eyes. Weren't teenagers supposed to sleep until noon? Why was he up so damn early? Walking down the hall, he resolved to dwell on it when he'd at least had some coffee.

Claudio didn't really like the community kitchen. It wasn't his food, he had no money to replace it at the moment, and he sure as hell couldn't cook to save his life. Cereal and sandwiches, sure, but his mom took care of everything. He was just now beginning to realize how spoiled he was.

His stomach, however, reminded him that he didn't have a choice. It was either the kitchen or wander out where everyone looked the same, and the latter was just plain creepy. That, and a familiar smell was wafting from the room.

"Mmmm," Eyes still half-closed, Claudio walked into the kitchen to the smell of food he recognized. "Pancakes," He grinned, pinpointing the brunette woman as the source of the delicious smell. They looked amazing, too.

"Mornin'," the teenager greeted, peeking his head into the fridge. They had milk, which meant cereal. At least that didn't change in this world.

Sarah turned then, seeing the dark-haired teenager enter the kitchen. He was just in time.. she had already started cooking another extra pancake. Seemed to have just woke up not long ago.. which reminded her of her own son. John occasionally slept late too. "Good morning," she said then, smiling slightly as she greeted him in return. This kind of breakfast was definitely one of the things she could make without much difficulty. As a mother, she had been used to making them a lot over the years. Though not every day. If she did that, her son might not have ate them for too long. Even if she tried the You will eat it and like it mentality. They'd eaten in some places where the food was less than desirable.. though that was usually only for a couple nights. It was mostly good enough to want seconds on most occasions, especially when they stayed in one place for quite a while. Least until they moved to start elsewhere and try again. It had gotten easier by a few years ago.. especially after John had realized that her predictions were true and not just the ravings of a lunatic. There were very few that would have believed her. Until they had seen the same things she had, at least.

She flipped the pancake then and had begun cooking the opposite side. She timed it, and when it was almost up, she set it on the plate with the other new pancakes. Golden brown. That was just perfect. There was still enough mix left to make a few more. Looking over at the young man who had just opened the fridge, she spoke up then. "Hey.. just curious, but do you feel like trying pancakes this morning? I could make a few more. Unless you'd rather have cereal instead, but thought I'd ask before putting more of them out." Sarah didn't mind cooking for others. It tended to give her something to do. Plus it showed that her cooking was alright. But making a meal for someone else reminded her of a simpler time, though deep down she knew simplicity was as rare here as it was back home. Especially with the situation with all those clones being everywhere. "I'm Sarah, by the way. Did you just get up too?"

Claudio's face said it all: he pulled his head back from the fridge, a small smile fighting to get on his face. A silent, if hopeful, glance.

His grin widened, however, when she invited him flat-out. They smelled just like his own moms, though he doubted the ingredients for basic pancakes changed from world to world. He closed the fridge, nodding (he hoped a little less fervently than he felt) and pouring the milk into a glass instead. Sarah, he decided, was a Goddess. A pancake making Goddess.

"That would be really cool," He stated, eyeing them hungrily. He was a growing boy, he told himself, despite the fact that he'd stopped growing when he was 16. And a growing boy needed pancakes. His stomach seemed to agree, rumbling once more. Claudio looked slightly awkward before clearing his throat.

"Claudio. I tried sleeping in, but.." He shrugged. "Still adjusting, I think. This is different from where I'm from." It was the half-truth, and all she really needed to know--and all Claudio really wanted to tell right now. His eyes had barely been open. But speaking of different worlds..

"Do people here normally do the.." he waved his hand in the air, as if to signify something meaningful, before he realized that he should probably explain more. "Do people normally look the same on this planet?" The Prise all looked the same on Star IV, and it was rare they traveled to the other parts of the Keywork. He'd chose the Prise over the creepy guy any day, though, and not just because they were all naked female humanoids. They at least sounded different from each other.

Sarah started on making a few more once she heard the teen accept the offering. She figured three or four might be a good number. Or maybe... five. The way he looked at the food, he was likely hungry, so she could do with putting up to five on a plate. She laughed lightly then when Claudio mentioned the sleeping in part. She understood that very well. "My son was the same way.. John. Actually, he's close to your age, I think. He liked sleeping in too. Well, least when he didn't have school. But as I remember, he was sleepy on those days too. Water usually helped." She laughed then as she remembered it. After a while, he had learned to use the alarm clock instead. "I don't think you have to worry about that here, though.. we don't have school at this time anyway. Unless one of the others is into practical jokes. But I doubt it, haven't gotten that impression from anyone here. They're usually nice. And have come from different worlds too. Some better, while others might have been worse than here." Like hers. She still hoped that what she experienced would never, ever happen here. That wasn't a fate she wished on anyone.

Shaking her head, she glanced at him after flipping yet another pancake. "Not unless they come off the assembly line in a factory," she replied, then paused as she realized this wasn't her world. "Or.. that's where I'm from. I came here from another world too. There were things that look human, except they have metal underneath. And they never have anything good in mind when they're looking for people. Plus they have almost no expression." That was probably the most she could tell about it.. for now. It was actually more than she'd normally reveal in a normal situation. But given that this wasn't normal, and they each were from different worlds.. well. She could tell a little bit at least. "But no," she said then, putting the couple pancakes on the plate and resuming her motions to make one more. "I don't think it's usually like this. People are usually themselves. But other weird things have happened. Like.. everyone's lives being fabricated. Strange things happen here on occasion. But at least there were no clones everywhere then. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon and people can go back to normal. Closest thing to people looking the same here is the normal way, like if they were born as twins."

Claudio's smile remained as she talked about her son--it seemed like she really missed him. It was nice, knowing that there were families split up. He'd been very, very close with his own. Absurdly so, but it wasn't like he had any school activities or anything. There was his girlfriend, sure, but he was one of those sissy kids that did stuff like obey curfew.

Though the one time he didn't turned out to be in his benefit. what was worse, disobeying your parents or getting killed by them? Tough call, Claudio. Tough call. Not. At least the pancakes smelled delicious, his mouth was watering just thinking of eating. It was better than thinking about what had happened, anyway.

"We have something similar where I come from," He mentioned. He wasn't sure why it was easy to talk to her, it just was. Maybe they were similar or something, but Claudio's normal quiet nature wasn't really there. It was more like he was talking to a family member.

"Well, we have cyborgs and androids, but the whole looking the same creatures, we call them Prise. They protect the Keywork, but they all have Angel wings and really pretty hair. I mean, they're blue, but they're all girls and there's this magical kind of feeling you get when you see 'em. I always thought, anyway.. They stay on their planet and we stay on ours. But Prise don't look as shady as the ones outside," he motioned to the window, finishing his glass of milk. He kind of felt bad for rambling, but it was nice to think of home, and it was even better it was okay to talk about it. That here were others that had different things in their worlds. Comforting, and really cool. It was an afterthought, but he looked up from his spot at the kitchen table, almost afraid to ask.

"Sarah? Do you have powers?"

"Protectors.." Sarah thought that seemed a little familiar. Although, she was a bit confused about the reference to a Keywork. And they were all women? Or appeared like them at least. "I met a few that were like that.. the protective type. They usually start out as assassins, but can be reprogrammed. And I've only met one female, the rest were guys. And oddly, they usually go for biker type clothes to blend in with people." She continued with the last pancake, flipping it again. She spoke again as she cooked it, "They want to stop someone from defeating them later on. So their leader sends some back to take him out before that can happen. The way it starts is.. there's a computer. It gets too smart. Hasn't happened yet where I'm from, though." Seeing that the pancake was done, she set it on the plate and then turned off the stove. She took the bottle of maple syrup and poured some on her plate. Then she took one the other plate and set it on the table, indicating that it was for Claudio.. as well as setting down the syrup for him to use next if he wanted any. The boy sure seemed hungry enough and she knew that everyone needed syrup with this kind of breakfast.

She seemed confused, however, at first, when asked about having powers. "Powers? You mean, like special abilities?" That would have been nice. But she shook her head as she grabbed her own plate. "No.. I don't have any. Just a normal, full red-blooded human mother here, joining to help the others in the big fight ahead..." She sat down at a seat across from him at the table after saying that, passing him a knife and fork as she held her own. "I do have a knack for surviving. I know I'm not invincible and that I can get hurt.. have gotten hurt, actually. But I'm still here and kicking. Though sometimes I get dreams about my son and those things that came after us. I wouldn't call that a power. I wouldn't mind being bullet proof or having super strength, though. That would definitely come in handy against Metal." She paused then, realizing he might not understand the term. Sarah had already taken a bite of her serving and smiled. Seemed she had actually made these right. Made them very good, in fact. "That's what we usually call them in my home.. me and the other fighters. Probably a good thing they aren't here with me or they might have gotten changed into a clone too. What about you? Do you have powers? Just.. curious is all, you don't have to tell me if you want it a secret. I've had a few secrets of my own."

Claudio was enthralled, imagining her story take place--it was something fantastical, like it came out of a movie, like it was almost too crazy to believe. And yet Claudio believed every word of it, even if he didn't get any of the terms. If he came from a world and landed in another, why couldn't Sarah come from one where there were biker robots trying to kill people, too?

He had to admit, it was an awesome story--full of excitement and danger and probably intrigue, he had the urge to pick up a pencil and start drawing. Maybe even base a story around it. It was the tip of the iceberg, and it was exciting. It wasn't like how he'd lived his own life, at least until the events culminating into waking up in Kansas.

It was when Sarah brought the food to her own lips that Claudio realized how hungry he was again. He'd been too enthralled in her story, his imagination acting up. Visions of Sarah kicking the crap out of robots armed only with a laser rifle. It looked cool in his head, anyway.

"A little bit. I didn't know I had them until later, uuh.." He normally would have kept it to himself, but Sarah was different, he could tell. Claudio liked her a whole lot, anyway. Trying to find the words for it, he chewed thoughtfully on his pancakes before pouring an ungodly amount of syrup on them.

"I can turn invisible," he stated, head in the clouds still before he realized that talking with his mouthful was rude. He closed his mouth and finished a bite, giving her a sheepish smile. "And go through things. And, uhm, I think I can revive the dead a bit, but I haven't really tried much." He didn't want to, either. Practicing meant dead bodies.

"I trust you," he said simply, his smile genuine. He didn't trust a lot, but Sarah seemed to be quite the exception to his rules. It had to be the maternal instinct or something. Speaking of..

"Is he here?" He asked casually. "Your son, I mean." Waiting for a answer, he continued to eat the pancakes. Exactly like his mom made them, and exactly what he needed. "You definitely seem to care about him bunches."

So.. Claudio had powers, then. That was sort of cool. She hadn't really spoken directly to anyone with abilities. Online, yes. But this would be the first time she had interacted with any of them in person. And she also felt she could trust this one. He was trusting her enough with what was obvious personal info about his powers, so maybe.. she could put herself out a bit more if Claudio wanted to know her story. "That's.. amazing," she said after thinking on it. "Being invisible would have been handy for me. And the phasing.. I've been shot at enough times to know that would be a good power to have." The resurrection skill would have been nice too. She had literally seen too many people die. And from everything Kyle and Derek had said, and Cameron, many more would later. That was actually a future she'd fought to stop. Problem was that with everything they did, she was no closer to preventing it than before she started.

She smiled brightly when her new friend had mentioned her son then. She remembered what his father Kyle said. He's my height, with your eyes. He's got a strength. I'd die for John Connor. "No," she said, taking another bite of her pancakes. "I hear that sometimes a relative shows up, but he hasn't come yet, if he will. I do care about him.. everything I've done, it's for him.. and I'd give my life if it meant he survives, if it will save him in the end. I haven't had to yet. But we've had close calls. He's nice.. a good kid. Stands up for people. Though.. sometimes he kinda goes off half-cocked into things without fully thinking it through." She laughed at that. "I guess he gets that particular trait from me."

"He's lucky to have you." Claudio seemed confident of that, mind backtracking to where Sarah said she'd been shot at a lot. Was it the machines she was talking about earlier? Probably. Maybe she was some sort of freedom fighter. Now that would be a cool idea for a comic. Sarah, one of the last humans on earth, fighting to survive and protect her son.. Way cool.

"But.. Hey. If he doesn't show up, he's safe in your world, right?" he couldn't imagine a mother liked the idea of being separated from her son, especially if his comic book theory was correct.

Then again, most parents wouldn't murder their entire family in cold blood. Claudio was a little jealous of Sarah's son, if only because of that fact. He'd kill to see his family again. The way they were before the whole hammer-to-the-head-let's-poison-the-twins thing.

Sarah smiled when Claudio had said that, though she did worry about her son sometimes. Not knowing where.. or when.. he was. She hoped he was safe. Even if she had always impressed on the fact that no one was truly safe, at least potentially.

"I hope so," she said with a slight nod. "He actually went to.. the future that I've told you about, to try to stop the war or at least win it. Hopefully stop Skynet.. that's the supercomputer that started it all and what controls most of the machines. I've tried preventing it. It hasn't actually happened for us yet, but it will will. And machines came back to our present to stop him.. because they know he helps our side win."

She took a few last bites of her pancakes, finishing them and then drinking the last of the drink as well. "But he should be safe for the most part. He has protectors looking out for him. And he's a good fighter. A good son."
