WHO: Xander & Anya
WHAT: Random encounter of awkwardness.
WHEN: Afternoon.
WHERE: The complex kitchen.
RATING: TBD

With all of the crazy stuff going on in the city, Xander hadn't necessarily felt the need to venture out of the building. He didn't know what would happen if he did and he certainly didn't want to risk getting his ass kidnapped, kicked, or mauled if he tried to find out. Unfortunately, that also meant that he was without actual quality food, seeing as he'd forgotten to go grocery shopping the week before and was currently lacking in supplies to whip together a satisfactory meal. Unless one counted potato chips and ice cream - which, for the record, most people did not. Save maybe Xander. But he was saving that for later; if they were stuck here longer than expected, he'd need his last resort snackage before finally daring to go out and deal with all the crazy. The upside to all this crazy? At least Xander didn't have to call out of work, seeing as his boss wasn't exactly himself at the moment. Nothing pleased a guy more than knowing that he wouldn't have to put up with their overweight, overly irritable, pain in the ass boss in the morning. Except maybe sex. Sex and pizza. Oh, what Xander would give for a pizza right now...

Crossing the floor to the kitchen area, Xander set to work at digging through the refrigerator. Finally deciding on a sandwich, he pulled out a pack of turkey, ham, cheese, mustard, and mayo and set them all up on the counter. On a normal day Xander might have considered trying to make one of those quadruple-layered sandwiches that people always saw in the cartoons (if only to entertain himself), but he didn't want to waste food that he couldn't immediately replace so he went about making a fairly regular sized sandwich for himself. Once his sandwich was whittled together, Xander pulled a beer out of the fridge, sat down in the nearest chair, and began to eat.

While everything that was happening was frightening, Anya couldn't help but think it was also somewhat brilliant. It was almost like some vengeance demon had granted from weird wish. She just might have to keep this in mind if she heard any wishes come her way. With less people in the world, the cry for vengeance had gone down quite a bit. In fact, it was next to nothing, which left Anya very bored. She wasn't one to try to leave the building, she wasn't about to step out in the middle of all those guys.

So being bored, Anya headed down to the kitchen to find something to eat. There had to be something to do around here that could entertain her. She might as well try eating. It would keep her occupied for a little while at least. But the moment she stepped into the kitchen and her gaze fell on the man sitting there eating, she wished she hadn't left her room.

"Xander." It was a statement with some bitterness behind it. Okay more like a lot of bitterness. But even so, she wasn't exactly ready to face Xander right now. Not that she ever really would be. It still hurt her so deeply to think of him, knowing she still loved him so much. No matter what she did, she couldn't stop that feeling. Despite her love, she would never forgive him for what he did to her. In that moment, she seriously wished she could carry out her own vengeance wish. Damn the rules. The currently-brunette Anya walked over to the fridge and opened it. She could say so much right now, but she managed to keep her mouth shut. But it wouldn't stay closed for long if he tried to say anything.

Xander looked up from his sandwich, mind snapping away from thoughts of trying to see if Superman - er, Clark - could fly him to the grocery store if he asked nicely. Once he looked up though, Xander found himself wishing that he'd look right back down again. Anya. Crap, he was trapped in the kitchen with Anya. It was already bad enough that he officially had an ex-fiance, but Xander was that lucky guy who had an ex who happened to be a vengeance demon to boot. How many people in the world could say that, exactly? Swallowing down the mouthful of sandwich that he had been chewing at, Xander set what little was left of his meal down and rubbed at the back of his neck anxiously. Xander was doing all that he could to make himself seem like he wasn't sitting in a world of uncomfortableness right now. Even though, judging from the wide-eyed look he shot Anya alone, it was really more than obvious that he kinda was.

"Anya," Xander replied, his tone coming across more unnerved than bitter. Crap. What was he supposed to do? Sit here and deal with her scornful glares? Run for the door? Call Superman and see if he could fly him out the window? Yes, calling Superman was always an option. Superman lived here. No, no, no, no. Xander was going to have to play this more casually. He'd be all cool about it. Then he could slip out the door and run for his room as quickly as he could manage. Clearing his throat, Xander drummed his fingers across the edge of the table, then shifted in his chair so he was sitting facing the fridge. "How's it going?"

How's it going? How's it going Yeah, like that wasn't a perfect way to open any unpleasant cans of worms. "I mean, you're good right? With all the Mr. Smith's outside -" Xander anxiously looked down. "- you're okay, right?"

The bitterness and hurt aside, Anya felt claustrophobic being there in the kitchen with Xander. Of all the places he could have been in right now, it had to be here. Despite the fact outwardly she appeared calm, inwardly she was entertaining thoughts of flaying Xander. Or maybe disembowel him while being slow-roasted over an open fire. The more painful and drawn-out, the better. After all, he'd broken her heart completely after everything they went through together. Lucky for him she couldn't make such wishes a reality on her own. Anya really couldn't believe this had happened to her again. She had loved and trusted, and yet again had been let down in the end. After living for over one thousand years, one would think she'd have learned her lesson by now.

How's it going? Typical. As she checked the contents of the fridge out, she couldn't suppress an eye roll. Though at least it was less idiotic than some things he could've said. At least he wasn't making some reference to a comic book character or something. She turned her head and looked at him as he elaborated on his question. "I'm just peachy. Nearly everyone in the world has changed into the same guy. It looks like another apocalypse has come, but hey, I'm used to that. I've lost count of how many apocalypses have come and gone." Perhaps she seemed a tad too sarcastic, but she didn't exactly care right then.

Turning her gaze back to the fridge, she pulled out a bottle of water, then closed the door. She turned back to Xander and felt like she couldn't move away from the front of the fridge due to his presence in the same room. "And you? Have you gone to hide behind Buffy yet?" Yeah. Bitter.

Have you gone to hide behind Buffy yet? Ouch. The kitchen definitely was getting a little too heated for his tastes. By all means, Anya had every right to be angry with him. Giving him the cold shoulder, speaking to him as though he were a moron; every little thing that she did to him from now on was something that Xander was beginning to accept that he very well deserved. He never should have left Anya at the alter like that. It was screwed up and everyone knew it. Fact of the matter was, Xander hadn't known what he was getting himself into until it was too late. Not Anya - Anya was perfect as far as he was concerned - but with himself. Did he really want to spend his entire life living like his parents? Caught up in an abusive, alcoholic marriage that might well end in suicide or, worse yet, domestic violence? Xander spared Anya a weak glance, then lifted and dropped his shoulders into a sort of half shrug. Normally, he'd have retorted with some type of gusto about how he was a manly man who could handle himself without his perky, blonde, super-powered best friend backing him, thank you very much. Right now, Xander just didn't wanna make anything worse.

Like that was even possible.

"At least with the other apocalypses we mostly knew what was going on," Xander tried. He was going to attempt to make this as civil as possible. Again: something that seemed like more of an impossibility than anything. Crap, why couldn't he be all suave and badass about this? Where was his Bruce Wayne complex? "Right now it's nada, zip, zilch - the big goose egg to the extreme." And then some. What were they gonna do? Hide away in the apartments until everything reversed itself? Not likely. Most of the people that lived here had but only so much patience - Xander himself being among them. If there was something going on that they couldn't stop, they'd go stir-crazy, run out there anyway, and then only God knew what would have happened to them after that. They needed a plan. Something effective, strategical, and smart. The thing of it was: how did one fight against the entire world with a very, very limited, tiny sized army on hand?

As Anya looked at Xander, she couldn't help but wonder how she could be standing in this position again. After Olaf, she had sworn off men, only interacting with them to deal out vengeance on behalf of wronged women. Things had gone well for nearly 1,400 years. Then she made the mistake of going to Sunnydale and granting Cordelia a wish which ended up with Anya losing her powers. Looking back on things, Xander and Anya had had quite the odd relationship at first, beginning with that senior prom. Being human again had changed everything for her. Not counting Halfrek, the Scoobies had been the first friends she'd had in her entire life. Sure, she tended to say really horrible things at the worst possible time, but it wasn't exactly her fault. She was socially awkward when it came to humans. But Anya wasn't afraid to name the elephant in the room when everyone else wanted to dance around it and pretend it wasn't there.

"There is that. At least there's no one trying to turn themselves into a full demon." A slight shuddered passed through Anya as she remembered the Mayor. That was one of the only things she truly couldn't handle. "So is there anything being done about avoiding this apocalypse, aside from just us sitting around waiting for someone to tell us what to do?" Not that she was complaining, but this whole sitting around thing didn't exactly sit well with her unless she knew what was going on. Then at least she had a choice of whether she'd stay and face the apocalypse or run off and hide somewhere. Though she was very glad she still had her powers, she had some defense on her part at least. "Is there anything to do around here, except for sitting around?" This was Anya playing nice.

"Uh, no." Xander shrugged loosely. "Outside of us sitting tight and playing nice? There's no plan in motion. No clever attack being rallied up, no witty boost of confidence from the team leaders - again with the nothing." Xander wished that there was more. He was going stir crazy at the moment. Not good. "I think the team is trying to figure it all out." As in, the parts of the team that Xander was not currently on. "Until then? It's sandwich time for me with a side of ultra avoidance on the clones' parts." Xander didn't exactly know what else to do. Was he supposed to go running through the streets, demanding that those creepy clones answer all his questions? He didn't trust any of them as far as he could throw them. They had weird smiles and were all British and funny. The only kind of communication that Xander saw in the near future was him behaving in a violent sort of way. Or, you know, them behaving in a violent sort of way. There was no communication without violence and badness occurring as far as he was concerned.

Anya was definitely playing nice. Xander couldn't exactly say how long the niceness was going to last for, but he was at least grateful that she was trying. Typically, Xander wouldn't have even expected that. "Sitting around and getting caught in super awkward run-in's with your ex?" Xander eyed Anya warily, then shook his head. "Nope, I don't think so. Not unless you wanna go and pester Buffy or something, but I don't think she'd appreciate the extra hassle right now." Xander poked at the corner of his sandwich. Then again: facing off his ex versus dealing with an irritable Buffy? Both seemed equally deadly to him. At least with Buffy he could pull up the best friend card. Anya really didn't have any reason to give much of a damn about who he was or where he stood right now, did she? Funnily enough, it wasn't the demon stuff that freaked him out. It was the fact that she was the woman that he had left at the alter. What was that saying that Anya was so fond of? Oh, right.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Aw, hell.

"Listen, An -" Xander sighed. "I know it's tough. Being here with me around and stuff...but you're okay with it, right?"

"Well that's just peachy, just sitting here playing nice with people? I hope someone is figuring this out because I don't like the feeling of being trapped in here. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad there's good people here, but still. I'd like to go outside and not interact with those creepy pod cloney people." Anya was known for doing the stupid thing, but this was a time where she wasn't going to go running outside. Not with a world full of the same person who seemed to be quite a psychopath. She didn't exactly have a deathwish, so she was staying put, but it was slowly driving her crazy. It was amazing just how small the apartment building became when she couldn't go outside when she wanted to.

Anya took a drink of water, replaced the cap and set the bottle down on the table. It took all of a few minutes for Xander to debut the word ex. It was a word that made Anya's blood boil. "I'm not stupid enough to go pester Buffy. Besides, I'm not blond anymore. My IQ went up." Anya made it a point to point her darker hair. If one kept track of how often Anya changed her hair color, they'd find it impossible to keep up. But right now, Anya was liking the brunette. It suited how she felt and also who she wanted to be.

There it was, the thousand dollar question. Not to mention it was the most loaded question Xander could possibly ask her. All of the bitterness and pain she'd been feeling since he'd left her now came to the forefront. "Okay with it? Okay with it? How do you expect me to be okay with it? And you think it's tough? Tough is an understatement, Xander. So to answer your question, I'm not okay with it, but I'd rather be here than trying to fend for myself out there." And the flood gates were opened. If Xander wanted to know how she really felt, it was about to come out.
