Who: Pike and Faith.
What: Discussing the possibility of getting a place with more rooms.
When: Slightly backdated to the afternoon, December 19th.
Where: Their motel.
Warnings: Probably nothing.
Last night had quelled a lot of Pike’s worries. Not quite all, there was still the lingering worry over becoming his father that was causing him to curb his drinking. That was the real reason behind why he was the sober one at last night’s impromptu party, although with all the hilarious memories he had from last night, he didn’t really regret the decision. That, however, had been the least of his worries, and last night did quell the worst one. Sixteen years of living with a man that took every opportunity to tell you what a mistake you were, and how much you ruined his life and trapped him in a loveless marriage and single fatherhood, could do a lot to bruise a guy’s ego. The honest truth was that Pike was actually glad of the times when his father was in prison, because it gave him time away from the drunk, overbearing asshole. Even to this day, Pike still had a tendency to blame himself for problems in his various relationships. So when Faith had started taking extra fights that kept her busy more often than not, almost right after that night where he’d nearly broken down in front of her, he’d feared the worst.
He hadn’t really talked about it, at first. Talking about other people’s problems was something Pike had actually grown to excel at over the years. Talking about his own problems, however, was really not his way. He preferred to either solve them on his own, or if he felt he couldn’t or didn’t know how, he often took his father’s ill-conceived advice of “growing a pair” and “just dealing” which was stupid macho code for letting it fester. He did this not out of any desire to be like his father, rather he did it because he didn’t think other people really needed to be burdened with his crap that he should be able to solve himself. He hated feeling like a burden on other people, he always had and he likely always would.
But this was Faith. This was important. So he’d buckled down, shrugged off the ridiculous programming as best he could, and talked to Ruby about it. It was a little more okay to talk to her about it because she was his friend, though even then he’d downplayed it and insinuated that it was probably just him jumping at shadows. He wasn’t sure what exactly happened after that, but Faith had been very affectionate all through the night and when they’d gotten home, there was what Pike could only describe as hot monkey sex. He wasn’t sure if he had Ruby to thank for the night or what, but he felt a lot better now that his only worry was getting Faith’s multi-part Christmas present done. Whatever she’d started taking the extra fights for, it wasn’t because of something he’d unknowingly done to make her want to avoid him.
The dress was actually the easy part. Thanks once again to help from his friends, Pike had found a great dress. It wasn’t frumpy, but it wasn’t some femme fatale Bond girl thing either. It was a little different than what Faith usually wore, but that’s why he wanted her to have it. He had the whole thing figured out. The first thing she’d see was a weapon’s chest, and inside the weapon’s chest would be three very nice knives in different styles. There would also be a silver bangle with a protective prayer inscribed on it. The dress would be hung up on the inside of the bathroom door as a last little surprise. Overkill? Maybe, but Pike was one of those guys that would give someone he loved the moon, if he could. Besides, he was pretty sure Faith deserved it, after working through all the crap she’d worked through in the past few months.
There was something he wanted to talk about, though. When he’d asked her about getting a place with more rooms, she’d been in favor of the idea. To be honest, he hadn’t entirely expected that, and he’d spent the better part of the morning trying to decide whether that had just been the alcohol talking or whether he should bring it up like he said he would. If he was honest with himself, he would love to get a place with Faith. And on the hope that she really was feeling the same way, he’d decided that he would bring it up next time he saw her. In the meantime, he was checking the status of the dress with UPS. This Christmas was going to go off without a hitch if it killed him.
