Entry tags:open, sarah connor, star

Who: Star & Open
Where: 3rd floor break room
When: Early morning
Warnings: Probably not.

Star was perched at the one table under the one window in the room, she had a battered metal ammo case that she used as a lunch box, it had been the one thing that had survived the fire besides herself, and she liked it because it was sturdy and easy to stash under her desk or in her cubby. Just at that moment she was nibbling at a cookie and watching the rain out the window, she had her head tilted back completely, resting against the wall so that she could actually see out the window. There was a cup of coffee on the table as well, though she was ignoring it in favor of the cookie.

She was mostly making a mental list of things she had to get done that day, and realizing that if she didn't have any interruptions she'd be done with most of them before lunchtime, and could dawdle on the rest afterwards, which would give her time to get caught up on her 'stories' in the meantime. She'd probably stop and check on Victor too, make sure he was doing alright.

Sarah Meyer wasn't due to be in Childcare yet.. at least not for an hour. She loved watching those children as though they were her own. She had always wanted to have one. Maybe a daughter.. or perhaps even a son. But things in her life hadn't worked that way. And so she was content to watch others' kids. They usually got along good with her. A few had been a bit on the hyper side, but they were mostly nice. Nothing that couldn't be handled after some years of experience. And she was paid good for it too. Right now, this early in the day, she was hungry. Needed some caffeine to get her through it as usual.

She had gotten a paper cup of hot coffee, as well as a bran muffin from one of the vending machines. As she passed by, she saw she wasn't alone, there was another person sitting at a table under a window. Sarah paused, gesturing to an empty seat. "Err... may I, if it's not taken? I like looking out windows."

Star jumped at the voice, then smiled, looking just a little embarrassed and shaking her head, swinging her lunchbox down from the tabletop and under her seat to make more room for the other woman, the table was small, after all. She slid a notepad out of her pocket, writing down a quick: help yourself, I like the window too, even in the rain, sliding it over so the other woman could see.

Her handwriting was tidy, an even, tight block print, the kind of penmanship that would have made an English teacher cry tears of joy.

"Thanks. Sorry about the surprise." Sarah smiled apologetically as she read the writing and then took a seat across from her. "I've found that rain tends to relax me, when it hits the window." Something about the lulling repetition, the sounds of it. It usually had a calming effect on her. Not that she was stressed. Sarah had a pretty normal and boring life as far as she could remember.

She had unwrapped her muffin and took a bite or two. As she ate, her eyes briefly wandered to the lunchbox. It looked interesting, she'd never seen any like that one. But she wasn't one to pry even if she were curious. Instead, she thought it best to first introduce herself. SHe spoke up after taking a careful sip from the coffee, "I don't think we've met before, my name is Sarah.. Sarah Meyer. I'm in childcare department."

She nodded at the statement, writing: Star Connor, secretarial pool, I've processed some of your kids' records. That was what she did a lot of, data entry, personnel files, customer files, archives, new records, just a little of everything, really, whatever crossed her desk that needed to be filed or retyped or filed in the first place, she was all over it.

Sarah looked at the napkin after taking a couple more bites. "I bet you're very good at it. Do you enjoy it? I usually like my job. Most days, anyway." Though there were a few times that she and Eliot would occasionally glare at Riku a few times. "I like watching over them. Never really had any of my own, so I figured this is the next best thing. Been here about four years now."

She shrugged at the question, flipping to a new page on her notepad and sipping at her coffee before writing out her response. She could write at almost the same speed that most people spoke, and that was in longhand. She could write shorthand, but most people couldn't read that these days: It's a job. At least they don't discriminate here since I can't talk. I'm good with data entry, kind of makes me feel like a workerbee, or a cog in a machine, just doing my part to keep the whole thing going.

Sarah nodded at the reference about being a cog in the machine. "Yeah, I guess a lot of us feel like that. Like it's just routine, means to an end. But it works.. seems that the machine is still running." She took another bite of her muffin then. "I was actually considering being a waitress once, but went for childcare training instead. Turns out I adapted to it rather fast."

She nodded again, writing: Most people say it like it's a bad thing though, I like the feeling. She shrugged, she couldn't explain it, she just sort of liked feeling like she was part of something bigger.

There was a faint smile as she added: Waitressing isn't something I'd have the patience for, I've seen how customers treat those poor girls the smile went wry as she added: I'd probably punch someone in the face on the first day
