Necessary Annoyances (Giles and Martha)
Who: Giles and Martha
What: Giles gets checked up like a good boy. And epic talking.
Where: Martha's office, I guess,or where she's doing checkups.
When: Oct.11th
Rating: Not very high probably
Status: In Progress

Giles wasn't happy about being poked and prodded, but he was curious about the doctor. He'd figured out she might be British, just from her mannerisms in the messages they'd exchanged. He enjoyed the prospect of meeting someone who shared his roots, even if it was someone from an alternate Britain in another dimension. He was intrigued about what was different in that world from his, and what could be learned. Even knowing about alternate dimensions, it was often hard to wrap his mind around these things sometimes.

He knew he'd have a lot of scars to explain and just hoped she wouldn't tell him to take off his shirt. He knew he was healthy, and in good shape for his age, and he didn't like all the doctor visits he'd had to make already back in Sunnydale. But, he figured it best to get it out of the way. Besides, Buffy would likely moan and complain if he didn't get a checkup. She knew as well that he was fine, but she would probably, he guessed, tell him not to take any chances.

He came in and waited for her to call him.

She had been in the inner office, dealing with some self imposed paperwork. There wasn't exactly anyone here to report to, given that she was the co-head of the medical bay, but she was a stickler for proper paperwork.

Glancing at the clock, Martha took note at the time and closed the file she'd been working on. She grabbed a few documents and a gown before rushing out of the office. She didn't think she'd need it but the gown needed to be removed from the office. It just didn't belong there.

It didn't take her much time to see the older gentleman waiting in the hall. "Mr. Giles?" She smiled at him, her labcoat flowing a bit behind her. "I'm Dr. Jones. Call me Martha."

"Yes, I'm Mr. Giles. Rupert is fine. Nice to meet you" he replied.

Actually it was rare he got someone calling him by his first name. He suspected Buffy and the other young people still referred to him as Giles because of the age difference, even though their high school days, when the last name thing was mandatory, were long past.

"It's nice to hear someone from home...even if it's not the one I know...it's not as common as I'd like living in the States for so long. It's still rather strange though...I'm familiar with the concept of alternate dimensions, but it still rather boggles the mind to consider that there are other versions of the places I know so well out there."

He was friendly, though still cautious out of necessity, and with a "I'll be glad when this is over" quality to his tone. He did wonder, though, how much she knew about alternate worlds and how much he could speak of. He'd have to judge as he went along.

"I sincerely hope I don't find myself wearing that eventually." he said as he saw the gown. "I've worn far more than I've cared to in my time."

Buffy always found amusement in teasing him about the hospital fashion, he remembered that. He just knew he'd like to have a few words with whoever invented the things.

She couldn't help the smile. First names were the ultimate ice breaker after all. She held out her hand, tucking the gown in the other. "Rupert it is then." she moved towards the door of the examination room with a nod. "Alternate realities... well I've traveled a lot and I've been aware of one other, but I never thought that I would get pulled into one," she sighed. "I would say its something out of science fiction, but we're here living it and... I'm afraid a good portion of what I've done in the last few years would fall under that category as well.

She opened the door, chuckling at the tone of his voice. "I promise it won't take all that long." She adjusted the items in her hand and glanced down at the gown. "What this? Oh no," she laughed. "It was in my office, I'm just putting it back. Don't think it will be necessary. This is just a basic exam. I promise you'll be leaving here with your dignity completely intact, Rupert." She indicated the examination table. "If you could just take a seat, I'm afraid there is a form I need you to fill out first. Basic information, medications, allergies, existing conditions, just anything that i'd need to know in the event of an emergency." She sighed. "I am of course not expecting anything to happen, but it is best to be careful."

She turned to put the gown away and glanced at him over her shoulder with a smile. "So what is it like where you come from?" she would share her story as well of course.

"Well, some of my colleagues have more experience than do I...They were actually pulled into one, but this is my first time. I've read of things like this, however."

He nodded when she tucked the gown away, relieved. "Yes, I understand" he said. He talked a little as he dealt with the form she gave him.

"Actually, it's not a great deal different than this world...when I landed, it looked almost identical. At least in the sense of the way things look and work...I've spent more time in the coast than the Midwest, though."

"I think however that the forces, the things that are apparently here, are possibly even stronger where I come from." He was cautious right now by training and nature, willing to reveal a little, but still not taking too many chances.

He felt it was true, though, what he had said. There were not yet many vampires here, aside from transplants, and although his knowledge of this dimension's demons was yet limited, they were unlike the physical creatures he and Buffy fought so often. They were akin to entities like the Ethros or Shorshak, which possessed humans rather than living freely on their own. Or, as he shuddered to recall, Eghyon. Killing them was far more difficult here.

"There are many things that many people attempt to ignore or rationalize...but they're definitely dangerous to deal with. It's become a large part of my life, suffice to say, and I've come away with more than a few scars."

"I do find that this world has some things that appear at first glance to be more difficult than what I'm used to, but I believe my colleagues and I can help." he said. "Granted, I feel a bit blinded right now, being unaccustomed to not having access to my research materials here. I'll have to make contact as was suggested, and become a student of sorts, I suppose."

Martha had to admit that she was rather surprised to hear this. It was an interesting story. And she did not for a second doubt it. "So this isn't the first time that you have dealt with things that go bump in the night, then." It was a statement more than a question. "I think all of us are feel rather blinded when we first arrive," she said honestly. "None of us expected this, but I'm rather surprised to hear that you have experience with these things." she paused. "If you're looking for research material, I'd contact Mr. Singer. He seems to be the one to talk to about such things," she smiled.

"But I would never be one to suggest that there wasn't more that people tried to ignore. Where I'm from... well one three word. Aliens every Christmas." she walked over to the cabinet and grabbed her stethoscope from its place, bringing over the bloodpressure cuff and other items she would need for this examination. She chuckled to herself and turned back around. "When you finish with that, if it isn't too much trouble, if I could ask you to remove your shirt. I promise it won't be for long." She smiled at him before continuing her story.

"I know that nothing I've done befoer prepared me for this. I spent the last several years in the persuit of aliens," she glanced over at him before quickly continuing. "Don't think I'm crazy. I used to travel with a man who was one, through space and time. And then joined up with a military organization to help defend the earth against incoming threats. As a medical officer of course," she smiled slightly. "I take if you and yours were in the same place? Keeping the world safe?" She sighed. "I'm afraid it doesn't truly matter where you came from. Being thrown headfirst into a new environment like this... its extremely jarring."

She put some Purel on her hands, getting ready for the examination. "As soon as you're done with the form, we can start. You're actually my last appointment of the day." She was off after this.

"Sometimes I wish I weren't so familiar" he commented. She mentioned Mr.Singer then. "Buffy spoke of Billy...I wonder if they're the same man."

"Well, not unlike that. You can think of me as a mentor, a teacher. Buffy Summers was my student. She's quite a challenge, but she's remarkable. My group...she and a couple of her friends...we've been through a lot of unbelieveable things. Like you said, saving the world. Although I felt like the earth was doomed when it all started. Buffy quickly proved me wrong."

Giles wasn't comfortable revealing the entire truth, but this was basically it. Just in more general terms. "Are you aware of the creatures that exist here? We had them too, but they were not the same. Quite fascinating, really."

If he made it home, his journals would probably be more studied and sought after than any other watcher in history, he thought.

"I agree, even for someone who is familiar with many of these things, it's still disorienting."

He finished the paperwork and slipped off the shirt. He was really hoping she didn't bring up the Egyhon tattoo that was still on one upper arm. He had more scars now than he cared to recall. Many small reminders of Angelus were still visible, as well as scars from the evil Mrs.Post and so many other times he'd been injured helping Buffy. Or that she'd injured him-he still had a scar on his forehead from when she smacked him out cold to go face the Master.

Most visible now though were the big slash across his side from the knight's lance and the crossbow scar on his back. He was unsure if that one was visible or hidden at the moment.

"I suppose the evidences of my battles are rather obvious...I never fail to be amazed that I've come through it all alive and with intact sanity."

"Buffy's brilliant," Martha smiled. "I didn't realize you were connected to her. She gave me my job back when I appeared... apparantly I was here before but I had no memory of it. She helped me find my way around. If you helped mold her into the person she is, well that speaks very highly of you." She got out the stethoscope and pressed it to his chest.

"We've been warned about Demons and the lot, told to steer clear," she dropped the stethoscope (still hooked around her neck) and pulled out the pendant. "Been told to wear these at all times, anti-possession charms, though I have to wonde, if a demon gets close, what'd to keep them from just tearing it off," she frowned slightly at this before picking up the stethoscope again.

She took in the various scars and knicks that seemed to dot the man's skin and she understood. "The unfortunate marks of the warrior," she said it with a genuine understanding. "I guess I don't have to tell you this but each of these are a story." She had a fair share of her own that she had gotten during the Year That Wasn't, they hadn't gone away - a side effect of being at the eye of the storm.

She stopped talking, listening to his heart. "Breathe in please," she knew he wanted to get out of there quickly. She would have to listen at the front and the back, and take blood pressure, and a bit of blood for testing.

"To be honest, I'm surprised at times that I was able to. She's a typical teenager and suffice it to say that she frustrates me at times. She comes through when it's necessary though."

"Yes, you're right, and I'm sure someone not familiar with these sorts of things would find many of them difficult to believe."

He took the pendant. "Thank you. I'm somewhat familiar with wards and such, although I'm rather glad this one doesn't involve strong herbs. Difficult to put up with something that smells so badly." He wished he had his research materials to look into it further. Maybe the person he was directed to would tell him more.

He stopped talking to oblige her request about breathing. His lungs were something he'd often wondered about.

When he had a moment to do so, he said "I stopped smoking years ago, but I often wonder just what shape they're really in."

He took note of the blood drawing equipment, mentally curious as to what exactly they would have found testing Buffy. He worried about who could get hold of it. He had no idea anymore about Glory, but he knew of others in his world, and from other places...no one knew. There was no way to know what was what with Dawn, but he wasn't taking chances since she was the slayer's sister.

"If Buffy and her sister have been in yet, and you've tested them" he nodded toward the syringe. "Be cautious. There are certain people...beings...who would kill to get that blood. That's all I can say, but I'm concerned about it."

She chuckled at this. "Well I wouldn't know about that, but I like to think we were all that way once. I know I was. You think you know best... then gain, half the time I was studying," she chuckled. "To become this," she indicated the medical bay. "But I have to admit I got rather side tracked, traveling about the universe in a big blue police box." Saying that outloud sounded rather crazy but it was true.

"I've heard some things about a skin marking - a tattoo you can get - that is more permenant than the these pendants, and clearly cannot be removed." She made a few notes at what she was hearing. "I've been contemplating getting one, just in case." Jotting a few more notes, Martha listened again. "How long ago did you quit?" she asked. "Generally the rule is that for every day a smoker has quit, they gain one day back, they sound alright, a slight bit of strain, but you have many more years of breathing left to go, without any supernatural or other superceding events." Meaning him getting killed prematurely.

She got the bloodpressure cuff and started wrapping it around his upper arm as she listened to him. "I took blood from both of them, well my predicessor - the last time I was here - - took blood from Buffy, but I examined Dawn earlier today, her blood is currently undergoing testing," her brow furrowed slightly at this. "Is there something I should know? If there is a possible danger becuase of something in her blood..." she was thinking some kind of mutation. Something that if anyone else came into contact with could cause problems... but kill to get? When he said he couldn't say more she nodded. "Its another secret," it was a statement. "Well if it makes you feel better once I'm done with the sample, I can see about destroying it." She wasn't about to do anything that made them uncomfortable. It was just these sort of things that she needed to know...

She started filling up the cuff with air, holding her stethoscope to his arm.

Giles had to chuckle as well. It was true that people usually changed over the years. Even the people who knew him best had been shocked to learn about his past as 'Ripper'. "It does seem that way, you're right." he agreed.

"I'll look into it. It would be more practical" he agreed. When she asked about the smoking, he said "several decades ago, so it's been a while. Well, except for one time when I was definitely not myself for a time, and then only a couple. But I'm glad they sound well."

"No, there's no danger in coming into contact with it...there are just certain ways they're different. I'm just cautious because of the influx of people into this world...I never know who will come across from my world."

She did understand his secrecy, and he appreciated it, nodding when she talked about destroying it afterward.

He let her fill up the cuff, unconsciously making a slight face at the tingling discomfort the procedure always produced for a moment.

"It's usually rather good, which surprises me with all the stress in my life" he commented.
