PANDION
Centuries ago, humanity reached a breakthrough in evolution as a species. Designated the acronym GENI (Genetically ENgineered Incipient, also commonly known as Generation I), they were synthetic homo sapiens manufactured in vitro with enhanced physique and intelligence, rapid regeneration, biological immortality and cyber synchronicity. The original, a dark skinned female, was aptly named Eve. There were six prototypes in all, each derived from the genetic template of Eve. As a result of this lack of genetic diversity, the six were unfit to be reproductive matches for each other. Instead, they expanded in numbers by means of replication.
They helped propel civilisation to the next stage. They fought our wars for us. But in an age where selective human enhancement served to exacerbate social stratification, the GENI were used, not loved. Scientific marvel and admiration soon soured to envy, jealousy and resentment. Compounded by ongoing ethical and religious controversies, the destruction of a seventh prototype in development by a rioting mob signalled the precipice of an already simmering hostility. Those who once fought our wars for us declared war against us, forsaking their adopted families and nations. The First Transhuman War saw rivers of blood and ended in mutual cessation when the GENI took to the galaxy in search of a home to call their own.
It is said that the GENI founded a colony on a distant planet and developed in complete isolation from natural humans. The lead scientist, their true 'father,' was reported missing and was presumed to have joined his children. Over the years, they faded from our memories and became a chapter in history and philosophy texts. The Second War was not so much a war as it was an extermination. Mankind was woefully unprepared for the sudden assault on Earth. Oceans and lands alike were decimated. Within hours, the human population was down to its last hundred thousand. The survivors surrendered unconditionally and were colonised under the rule of GENI Viceroys.
The few who remain at large count the days in fear aboard a Damocles-class capital ship known as the Pandion. Once the pride of the Earth's fleet, it is equipped with a faster-than-light system and its immense girth is capable of accommodating a small city if necessary. But there are no more people left to fill a city. It need only carry its crew and a scattering of passengers. Keep them safe. And live.
