Who: Victoria Frobisher & Oliver Moreau
When: Wednesday, 24th January
Where: Sweet Nothings, Victory Road
What: A run in with an old aquaintance
Warnings: n/a

"Oh my god this is torture." Victoria pouted, her eyes drifting up from the counter of desserts and to the person standing behind it. She'd been there, in a half crouch, trying to pick the perfect sweet to go with her coffee for a while now. When she'd started looking she'd been the only person waiting to be served and having the time to take in the pretty picture that was a shelf full of cakes and pasties had been something of a treat. Now there was somebody approaching and the last thing Victoria wanted to do was hold up the queue.

"You might as well go ahead," She said with a playful groan as she moved to stand. "at this rate I'll still be here come closing." Victoria stood aside. She was about to turn her attention back to the display when found herself having to do a double take.

"The banoffee cupcakes are unbelievable, if you're in the market for recommendations? Or... I could just keep my comments to myself and order." He scratched the back of his neck somewhat awkwardly, pressing his lips together as he frowned. "Sorry, I'm terrible at reading women... or, uh, anyone, for that matter."

That double-take of hers was worrying, after all. Although... maybe she knew him from Confessions? She looked familiar, too, though, so that couldn't be right. "Uh, I don't mean to come off sounding like a total creep who's hitting on you, but... do I know you from somewhere? Because I really feel like I do."

"You've forgotten who I am?" Vic nodded, trying to feign a look of total regret. She and Oliver didn't know each other all that well- had only crossed paths a small handful of times, mostly during working hours back when she did bit parts for the first few episodes of Confessions- but the look on his face and the way he stumbled over his words was just far too amusing to cut short.

She looked back to the cabinet, quiet for a moment as if pondering something important. She didn't want to actually torture the poor guy and so she tilted her chin up in an attempt to catch the shopkeeps eye. "I'll have one of the banoffee cupcakes please. To eat in."

Turning back while her order was being plated and she finally smiled. "We've worked together a couple of times. On the show. It's Vicky, Vic Frobisher. Did you-" She pointed to the tray. "because I don't want to take the last one." She added, tucking a stray hair behind her ear. "It'd be horrible luck to bump into some old co-worker with a terrible sense of humour and have to leave without what you came for."

"Uh," he said rather pointedly, blinking as he stared at her. Fuck. Fuckity fuck fuck. "I'm, uh, awful with faces?" He was, but that wasn't the point-- that just sounded like a shitty excuse. "Sorry, this is... awkward. I'm... awkward." Clearing his throat, he ran his hand down over his face, his free hand shoved as deep into his pocket as it would go. Brilliant. That was just... phenomenal.

He'd offended her somehow, right? That was why she was totally ignoring him now? Oh-- no, wait. She was looking at him again. Merlin, he was utter pants at this.

"... right," he nodded, his eyes widening. "Sorry, there's... it's been a couple months." Rough months, to be sure, but really, it was the span of time that mattered most, Olivier laughing somewhat awkwardly as he shook his head. "Nah, take it. It'll be like... reparations for forgetting your name." He turned back to the counter with a grin at Melinda, pointing to one of the cupcakes behind the glass. "I'll have one of the... uh, strawberry and champagne ones, yeah?"

Oh hell, this was just too much. All Vic had wanted to do was to keep the guy flustered for a little while longer and instead it seemed as if she really was torturing him. He had said that he couldn't read women but she hadn't expected for him to keep explaining- to claim himself 'awkward' and repeatedly too!

"Shit, I'm sorry," She said with a small chuckle. "I really don't- or at least didn't- expect you to remember my name. I just... saw a devilish opportunity and had no idea I was taunting somebody who would crash and burn so badly."

"I'll get that," She added, turning to the counter and back again. "reparations for winding you up? An edible ask for forgiveness?" She asked, hopefully, already getting her purse out and handing over the sickles needed for a pair of cupcakes and coffee.

Wait. She'd done all that for a good laugh? Merlin. He really was pants at talking to women, wasn't he? "I think that's a good bet, you know-- just. Always expecting the crashing and burning. With me, at least, anyway."

-- was she seriously paying for his cupcake?

"Oh no, I couldn't possible as you to do that-- not unless I can make up for it later by buying you a drink, or something?" Something like that. Oh god, that sounded like a date, didn't it? "With, uh-- totally pure intentions."

"Don't be silly, you didn't ask, I offered. Besides, it's not every day you meet a guy who insists he's terrible with women, creepy and awkward... and yet seems to be absolutely none of those things. Honestly," She smiled, trying to be reassuring while taking her plate and mug and making her way over to a nearby table. "it's no problem."

It wasn't until Vic had sat and had scooped up a small bit of frosting with one finger that she realised what he'd said. Vic had been out with friends recently but it had been a long time since she'd been asked out and had even considered accepting. She wasn't even sure whether it was because Oliver- cute in a kind of hopeless way- came across as so non threatening or if just enough time had passed since the accident that she was finally open to the thought of dating again, but either way she found herself nodding.

"I'd like that. A drink, I mean. But when you say later... are you talking about today or... ?"

"If you're sure," he said, slowly shrugging as he decided to just let this one go as he moved to take a seat in front of his cupcake. Well, it seemed that he'd really done it this time. He'd somehow managed to... charm...(?) a woman by being at his least charming. Well. If nothing else, this could lead to a decent friendship, right?

"Oh, whenever. I mean-- we kind of film at weird times sometimes, so I'm sure your schedule is more, uh... structured? And probably less open. But, like-- seriously, no obligation to accept the offer if you don't want to. I'm not really in the habit of pushing women into things that make them uncomfortable." He'd noticed her hesitation, after all, and if nothing else, needed at least to make sure.

"Merlin," Vic chuckled in disbelief. "are you always so self-sabotaging? Or is this you trying to back out of your offer? Because if I'm so repulsive that one drink has you feeling that way then I really ought to know." She added before burying a smirk within the rim of her mug.

Normally Vic wasn't half so mischievous, especially around people she barely knew, but there was just something about Oliver that made it almost impossible to resist. That and her morning had been one of the best she could remember having in a long time. It'd been spent at work, but for the first time since starting she'd been able to get on with her work without feeling as if she were the new girl who had no idea what she was doing.

Oh god, this girl was cheeky. This was the part where he truly wished he was better at reading women. Maybe then he would have seen the breakup coming.

"It's a fact of life that most of the things I say should probably never leave my mouth." He shrugs, stretching as he moves to scratch at the back of his neck somewhat awkwardly. " But, uh-- no, I just don't want to seem pushy. Like, here, let me push this kind gesture on you against your will... just doesn't quite roll off the tongue, you know?"

"Well no, but asking somebody out doesn't need to come with a disclaimer." She pointed out. "Though having something kind pushed onto me... hell that sounds awful!" She grinned, setting her drink down and letting that hang in the air for a moment or two.

He shrugged, the gesture just this side of exaggerated as he leaned back in his seat. "Hey, I never once claimed to be a normal sort of guy. Consider the hot mess you're signing up for here... drinks or not, a lot of weird shit can be said in like... fifteen minutes." So, hell, if she wanted the out, who was he to reject her attempts to get away? It wasn't like he'd been particularly good company the last several months, as Lexa and Tate had both come to learn. Merlin, it had been in August, hadn't it? It really was time to move on.

"I guess it would depend on what kind thing was being pushed on you, huh? I mean... Flowers? Probably fine. Frogs? Even if they're well-intentioned, I doubt anyone would want that. Probably."

"I don't know..." She mused. "I think it might depend on what kind of frogs you were talking about. Plus, they are kind of cute. I do prefer flowers," She added quite seriously, pausing in her attempt to free her treat from it's wrapping to hitch the side of her shirt up to reveal a couple of inches of bare skin and a small section of her huge, sprawling tattoo. "but give me a guy that's going to force chocolate frogs on me and I could live with the pushed part."

"Anyway, tell me about the show! Are you guys still filming?" She asked, her eyes glazing over as she took a bite of the caramel filled cake. Vic had been to the shop before and had tried a few of the cupcakes already, but it seemed Oliver wasn't wrong in his claim that banoffee ones were unbelievable.

His eyes widened considerably at the sight of her tattoo, Olivier giving an appraising nod. "I'll be sure to stock up on chocolate frogs for any and all future endeavors of me shoving kindness on other people. Especially you"

At her question about the show, he grinned, slowly nodding. "Oh, yeah. Season two now. Long hours, but that kind of comes with the territory." It was a good thing he loved his job. "Any chance of you coming back as an extra?"

Vic chuckled, moving to quickly cover her mouth as she swallowed, not wanting to spray him or the table with crumbs. "Especially me?" She made as if to consider the thought and then gave a nod as if she'd come to some sort of positive conclusion.

"Probably not," She replied in answer to his question as to whether she'd be working on the set of Confessions again. "I was asked... but there were things going on at the time that meant I had to turn the work down. I'm actually working at the Prophet now." She added enthusiastically, swiping her hand from left to right in the air in front of her. "The Cast of Confessions come Clean - Dishing the Dirt on Drama!"

It was a terrible attempt and might have been more believable if she'd claimed she was working for Witch Weekly, but there was just something about this afternoon and her present company that made it impossible for her to keep from teasing.

He shrugged, the motion more non-committal than anything else. "Never know when I might run into a fellow dessert stealer such as yourself again."

Wait-- she was pulling his leg again, wasn't she? Merlin, this woman... Olivier laughed. "That would be the most boring column if it involved me, you know. I'm not nearly so interesting as the other members of the cast... and even they lead pretty boring lives, all things considered." Logan had Lillian, Silviya had Terence... and yet it certainly had been seeming rather like there was something going on between Robert and Silviya, hadn't it? But he'd keep his mouth shut about that. It wasn't like he was in the habit of talking about unsubstantiated rumors with the press.

"So what about you? I'm sure there's lots of news in, uh... news. Especially at a place like the Prophet." Someone had to make up some of the lies they occasionally reported on, right? Not that she struck him as the sort. "You seem like... I dunno, like you have too much integrity to work for them."

"Yeah? What gave you that impression?" She asked, curious. She was smiling and actually quite touched at the compliment, but she couldn't help but wonder what it was about her that made him think such a thing. "Was it the tattoo? Or the cake thievery?" She paused for a moment, sitting back and reaching for her cup to nurse as they talked.

"Oh," he nodded, grinning as he tore a bite out of his own cupcake, "totally the cake thievery." But, now that he was really thinking about it... he couldn't say for certain. Finally, popping the bite into his mouth, he looked up at her again with a soft shrug, his expression earnest. "I don't know, you just have, like... a quality. Something in your air that makes you seem... I don't know if cool is the right word, but kind is definitely up there. You just seem like a good person, you know?"

Vic watched as he considered her question. She didn't really know what she was expecting him to say but the reply he gave her was one she would have never predicted; It made him seem a million miles away from the awkward person she'd been speaking with at the counter, and if anything it seemed... well, charming, at least in an accidental way.

Not normally one to be taken by surprise and Vic attempted to hide her smile by looking down to her drink.

"I mean, I'm not a bad person..." She chuckled, reaching across to pick at her cake, trying to distract away from the fact that he'd made her blush. "but yeah... I'm pretty new at the paper- I'm sure there's time for my corruption yet."

"Oh, for sure," he chuckled, reaching down to pull off another bit from the top of his cupcake to pop into his mouth, taking a moment to finish swallowing before he nodded. "But it still wouldn't suit you, you know. Even if you got taken in by all that fun and fanfare. You ask me, you're bigger than... all that."

In that moment, he couldn't help but wonder what had taken her off the Confessions set. If only because he really was genuinely curious about what it would be like to have her back on it again.

“Fun and fanfare? At the Prophet?” Vic laughed. “Oh, if only you knew.” Still, she didn’t elaborate. If they really were going to get this drink then she’d let him guess as to what her previous profession had been when and wherever they did. No point giving everything away too soon, especially considering he’d already made a few assumptions about what kind of person she was already.

There was also the fact that there was always the chance he’d ask why it was she’d given up doing something she’d loved so much. That in turn had the potential to throw their conversation off kilter- if It turned out she felt like being honest, of course- and right then Vic really wasn’t in the mood to sully such a positive encounter by bringing such a serious topic to the table. They were in a cake shop after all- the cake was good, the weather outside was... not terrible, and for the first time in ages Vic felt like s normal girl having a conversation with a somewhat normal guy, no expectations, no pressure.

“So, how’s your second choice?” She asked, gesturing to his plate with her half empty cup. “I’d have pegged you down for a banoffee kind of guy, sure, but strawberry and champagne? You surprise me.”

"Well, it was meant to be rather tongue-in-cheek, but I imagine you got my drift." There was just something about her that he couldn't quite put his finger on. It would have been annoying if she wasn't so sweet and seemingly likable. He only hoped that his first impression of her proved to be correct and that she didn't somehow turn out to be duplicitous in the end.

Looking down at the cupcake, he grinned, grabbing it to hold out to her to offer her some. "I don't know-- I like the thought of champagne in the middle of the day. Makes it seem all the more... festive and exciting. Bubbly, even. Try some?"

Vic was about to protest, to tell him she couldn't, but he was holding the cake out and looking expectantly at her and a stupid thought crossed her mind- a snippet of conversation she'd had with a friend a long, long time ago- a rule about only sharing food with people you wouldn't mind being thoroughly snogged by. The rule didn't count now because Oliver had been picking at his cake rather than eating it out of its wrapper, but the memory had brought certain thoughts to the forefront to her mind and so she took the cake from him, smiling, her fingers tearing loose a piece pink frosting covered sponge.

"Wait, this doesn't count as my drink, does it?" She asked, raising an eyebrow in question.

Olivier couldn't help but grin when she accepted his offer, though laughter bubbled up out of him soon after at her question as he shook his head.

"I mean-- Merlin, if you were hoping for an out, you're more than welcome to take it as such, but, uh... definitely not my original intent?" Hell, if she wanted to take the escape route, though, it wasn't like he could really blame her.

Vic laughed. "You know what? I don't think I will. I don't want to go seeming like I'm too keen but I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing what you're like with a proper drink in you." And at that, to keep herself from continuing to grin like a loon, she ate the pinch of cake she'd had poised for eating.

The cake was good; Not quite as sweet as her own but light and refreshing and something that'd be lovely with an actual glass of bubbly.

"I'm not sure it'd go too well with coffee, but I like it. Did you want some of the banoffee?" She asked, nudging her plate in his direction. "I know you already know what it tastes like but I'd hate to deprive you of what you came in for."

Letting himself laugh out loud, Olivier slowly nodded. "All right. Deal." Not that he had any idea as to why she would be interested in going out for a proper drink with him-- Merlin, she wasn't interested in a press exclusive, was she?-- but he likewise wasn't about to question it because, well, she did really seem like a nice enough girl, and the thought of spending a lovely evening or afternoon chatting with a decent sort of person was, frankly, right up his alley.

Grinning, he slowly reached forward to tear off a piece of the banoffee cupcake to pop into his mouth. "Mm-- yeah, just as good as I remember it."

"It is good." She agreed. "I'm pretty sure everything in here is, but still..." Going quiet for a moment and busying herself with her coffee and it occurred to her that she'd paid for his cake and had somehow lured him into sitting with her without him getting a drink of his own.

"I'm not... keeping you, am I?" She asked. She felt fairly certain she wasn't- his posture seemed relaxed and unhurried- but considering how badly she'd distracted him with her terrible teasing before, she wouldn't be surprised if he'd come in with the intention of taking his purchase out.

"Oh, totally," he nods, looking back at the vast array of cupcakes and cakes behind the glass. "And if I could ever bring myself to get anything other than the banoffee cupcakes I'd even be able to recommend some of them to you. I knew I should have diversified my order!"

At her question, though, he laughed, glancing down at his watch. "Nah. Need to head to the set sooner or later, but... I've still got time to make it there."

Vic nodded, relieved. “Ah, okay. Well, don’t let me make you late- I could talk your ear off given the chance and I’m pretty sure I’d never be asked back if I was found to be the reason you got distracted. Besides, if our drink goes well then we could... I don’t know... agree to both try something different each time we visit? That way we can work our way through the menu and then when we cross paths we can- you know- compare notes?” She suggested with a grin, well aware of how ridiculous that sounded, but finding herself quite unembarassed.

"Oh, well, we definitely don't want that," he grinned, leaning back to take in her plan as he slowly nodded. Hell, from where he was sitting, it sure sounded like there was already a plan in the works for another outing after the next one, and he was not about to look that particular gift horse in the mouth, not when she seemed so utterly lovely and sweet. "I hardly think I'm the type." Not to mention that, well, he did just so happen to be a fairly friendly, open sort of person even on the worst of days. Pulling out a piece of paper, Olivier scribbled down his number before sliding it across the table to her before he moved to stand, grabbing his things. "Here. That's me. When you're ready for that drink, shoot me a text, yeah?"
