Who: Parminder, Romilda, open
When: June 7, 2009
What: Exclusive interview with Romilda Vane
Warnings: None
Public/Private: Public
Romilda Vane walks into the restaurant like she owns the place. She's right on time, wearing a tasteful yellow dress and a smile, but there's a quiet seriousness that follows her. It's hardly unsurprising after the last few weeks.
Romilda's complexion glows in her Roksanda Ilincic dress. A couple of diners turn to look, but her cool gaze slides right over them. As a writer for the WWN smash hit Confessions, Romilda is used to creating drama of the onscreen variety. Recently, however, drama has found her in real life.
Her relationship with Quidditch's golden boy, Scottish international and Puddlemere United captain Oliver Wood, made for some splashy headlines. But as quickly as the two were making column inches the relationship combusted with some very public cheating. Parminder Patil sat down with Romilda, 27, to find out her side of the story.
Let's go back to the beginning. How did you meet Oliver Wood?
We actually met at Minister Shacklebolt's Inaugural Ball at Hogwarts in October. Near the sweets table, of course. (laughs)
And how long was it before it was more than just flirtation over sweets?
You know? I honestly don't think I can pinpoint the exact moment. We kept running into each other, out in London, but he got an awful cold and I didn't hear from him and I got so worried that I just sort of showed up at his place! Seeing him like that — he was such a big baby! — I think that clinched it for me.
Oliver is famously exuberant and passionate on the Quidditch pitch. What was life like behind closed doors for those first few private months of your relationship?
It was cosy. Domestic? He likes to make breakfast. I don't think anyone's ever cooked me breakfast before him. Oliver was kind and open and fun. He's really funny. (sighs)
But I have a feeling you weren't laughing when he was very publicly spotted leaving a bar with Daphne Greengrass.
(takes deep breath) No, I wasn't. Daphne and I have quite a few mutual friends, from all accounts she's quite lovely, I don't blame her in this at all. Or the others. Oliver is... charming. It's deceptive. You really believe him, even when he's making promises he doesn't seem capable of keeping.
Romilda's expressive brown eyes brim with unshed tears and she welcomes the distraction as lunch arrives. She picks delicately at her Asian chicken and pear salad, taking a few small bites before she's ready to continue.
What sort of promises was Oliver making?
Not long before I met his family we talked about a future. Growing up in the war, being so young - younger than Oliver by a bit - it was hard to imagine a future sometimes, you know? I never let myself hope. And then Oliver. It's hard not to get swept up in the way he talks about wanting a family and monogamy and children playing Quidditch in the back yard.
Romilda was first linked with Oliver back in December, but their first official appearance together as a couple didn't happen until January when they attended ex-Falmouth Falcons Chaser Marcus Flint's glitterfest of a birthday at V-Bar on Victory Road.
Why do you think it took a man who was that keen on making a future so long to go public with your relationship?
I'll admit I was reluctant. I hadn't had a serious relationship, and to be with someone who is so much a celebrity was a bit overwhelming, to be honest. He agreed with me that we could keep things a little easier than the full court press, but when we did, and everyone was so supportive, it was a wonderful surprise and wasn't nearly as intrusive or worrisome as I thought it would be.
But then he went and created some headlines of his own. I assume you weren't having an open relationship. How did you find out about the cheating?
The same way everyone else did.
Barely able to get the words out, Romilda pushes her salad away. Instead, she sips at a glass of lemonade and appears to pay rapt attention to the tablecloth.
Are you okay to carry on talking?
I am, sorry. I haven't really discussed any of this with anyone but my two closest friends. It's still a bit sharp for me. Thank you for your concern, though.
Oliver charmed you into a serious commitment, only to publicly humiliate you with not one, but two other women that we're aware of. Was he as equally charming at the end of the relationship?
I really don't know how he was at the end, we weren't in contact as things ended. I've since blocked him on the Network, if I'm honest. It just hurt. I've been keeping my head low, working a lot, only really seeing co-workers and close friends.
He's renowned for being a team player and being fiercely loyal to those he surrounds himself with. What do you think makes a man go from cooking intimate breakfasts to disappearing like a ghost?
I honestly wish I knew. He said at one point that I'd been distant, but I'd just begun this incredible new chapter of my professional life and I'll admit I may have been a bit obsessive. If anyone could understand that sort of single-mindedness, though, I would think it would be Oliver. So, maybe I just wasn't enough. (sighs)
Or maybe he wasn't? A public affair, a public punch up with his brother - completely anathema to his public image. Now that you've known him intimately, how much of that image is just that, an illusion created by clever publicists?
It seems to me any celebrity has a certain facade they put up; Oliver, though, was so genuine. You never saw anyone who loved his mother or a cupcake from Sweet Nothings more than that man. I wish he'd been more open with me. Whatever he's going through, I don't wish him any ill. I just hope he gets better soon.
How does somewhat get over a break up like this?
(exhales) I'm not really sure I’m an expert on that, never having been through this before… but I’ve been working a lot. We’re in the marketing stage for Confessions season two and really excited about where we get to the take the show thanks to the overwhelming support of our fans. Silvie [show creator and head Silviya Capper] has so many wonderful twists and turns up her sleeves, the Writer’s Room has been a flurry of activity and a comforting refuge in the midst of this. I’ve also been entertaining some other interesting writing opportunities, so we’ll see what happens next. My co-workers and friends have been incredibly supportive, as well. I’m very lucky to have them.
Care to share any hints about those other writing opportunities?
I can't just yet, but they're exciting, and potentially life changing... (she smiles) As if more change is what I need right now. But I'm working with some really great people and hopefully it won't be a secret for long. (chuckles)
I hope you'll come and tell Witch Weekly all about it when you're ready?
Of course.
With this, Romilda laughs, clearly feeling a bit better from the earlier conversation. Yet a sadness lingers behind the secretive smile as she talks about her future writing projects. Who can blame her?
The former Victoria Aderyn has found her wings and it's obvious that she's going to fly high.
