After getting those texts from Daphne yesterday, Astoria had found it impossible to focus on her work. She'd told her supervisor that she wasn't feeling well and that she was leaving early. She'd gone home and dug through her library, trying to find everything she could about blood curses. Of course, she'd already done that several times over the last ten years, but this wasn't a vague threat anymore. This was Daphne's life. She didn't want to lose her sister, not now and not ten or fifteen or twenty years from now. She wanted her sister to be able to live a long and full and satisfying life. She didn't want her to live in fear, always worrying that she might over-exert herself and further shorten her lifespan.
Astoria had found it impossible to sleep, and she was unfortunately out of any potions that would help, so when morning came, she had to rely on an obscene amount of caffeine and charms to hide the circles under her eyes. And when she went into work, she spent nearly two hours at her desk, staring at a stack of parchments and getting absolutely nowhere with them.
Finally, she had to admit that she just wasn't going to be able to focus on her work until she was able to talk to someone about it all. She might have gone to Daphne, but she figured that her sister wouldn't want to talk about it. It seemed like Daph was focusing more on diversionary tactics right now, trying to pretend that it wasn't as big of a deal as it was, and she didn't think it would be fair of her to force her sister to talk about it.
But Blaise knew about the family curse. He knew almost everything about her, and she knew she could go to him with anything. He was her best mate, and that was what she needed just then. And so, she pushed away from her desk and wound her way through the desks and offices at the Prophet until she reached his office. Luckily, his door was open and she wasn't going to have to use her High Priority Admittance privilege, as she'd felt guilty on every rare occasion she'd had to do so. She slipped inside and gave a quick glance around to ensure Blaise was the only one there before closing the door behind her.
Astoria stared at him for a long moment before her breath came out on a soft sob. She covered her face with both her hands and slumped back against the closed door.
