I’m an only child, and I don’t even have any cousins. Maybe that’s why I gravitated towards Chicago and not back home to southern Indiana. It seemed like a good idea prior to graduation, choosing a large city with the hope of meeting a lot of new people. But two years later I can only count Anne and Alex as my closest friends. I suppose, if I had a choice between lots of friends with only casual interaction and a few but very close friends – people close enough to practically be family – I’d definitely go with the latter. Maybe that’s a side effect of growing up without siblings.
My Aunt Maggie and Uncle Dylan were supposed to come visit me this past March, but unfortunately we were never able to work out the details and actually make it happen. My apartment is rather small, just a studio really, so they would’ve had to stay at a hotel, too. They tried to have children for years, but it never worked out, much in the same way their promised visit didn’t. I was upset, sure, but they do have their own horse farm to tend to and not as many stable hands as my parents have.
I’m starting to get rambly, I can feel it. Anyway, we’ve all decided to meet at my parents’ farm in Indiana for Thanksgiving this year. None of my grandparents are still among the living, so it’ll just be the five of us and likely our elderly neighbor, Mrs. Hamilton. I’ve always liked her, and it’ll be good to see her again too. Hopefully no one will ask if I’m dating anyone, or hope to get married and have children. I’d always dreamed of having that kind of life as a little girl, but I don’t think it’s meant to be. Not with interests and hobbies like mine, anyway.
But I think, in the end, that friends can be the best family you could ever hope to choose for yourself.
