WHO: Penny and Quinn
WHAT: Got something to tell you.
WHERE: Quinn’s apartment
WHEN: August 20th, evening
Penny sighed, shifting outside of Quinn's door before knocking softly. Somehow, telling people didn't get any easier. It didn't help that she never knew what to expect. The fact that she got all the expected responses from her team and yet none that she actually wanted was lying like a heavy burden on her.
Quinn snagged his bookmark from the back pages and marked his spot in the book he had ‘borrowed’ from Nic. He pushed the book onto his coffee table and padded over to answer his door. He smiled when he saw Penny, he hadn’t seen enough of her lately.
He pulled her into a hug, “Hey, where have you been?”
Penny smiled, melting into the hug for a moment before slowly returning it. "Around. Taking care of things. You?"
Quinn held her tightly, calmed by not feeling anything but wanting to hug a friend. He smiled slightly at her answer, "I've been...fine. I'm fine."
"Good." She took a deep breath and then let go, pushing past him. "I need to talk to you. It's important."
Quinn leaned in his doorway before he asked, "Sitting on the couch or will is this one of those better while cuddling talks?"
“Sit," she said, going over and sitting immediately, running a hand through her hair and sighing heavily. "I'm pregnant."
He'd just sat down when she made her announcement. He blinked, tilted his head and asked, "How are you doing with that?"
"I'm... doing okay. I'm retired. I'm no longer a Ranger." She smiled weakly and looked down at her hands, fiddling with her fingers nervously. "It could be worse. They could be kicking me out right away."
Quinn took her hands and squeezed them, "They're not going to kick you out, they'll finds something for you. You'll find something for you."
He pulled her close, "Now what do you mean by okay?"
"I mean okay, Quinn!" she snapped, looking at him exasperated. "God, not every little word I say is something you have to diagnose. I'm doing OKAY. As in, OKAY."
Quinn tilted his head blinking at her. His face slowly settled into a frown, “I wasn’t trying to do that, just wanted to help make you feel better.”
"Then stop trying to dissect everything, Jesus," she mumbled, running her hand quickly over her face.
She was clearly not okay, but didn't want to talk about it Quinn concluded. He gave her a small smile, "I'm sorry."
She shook her head, leaning back and closing her eyes, sighing. "Whatever. It's just... been a long month."
Quinn threaded his fingers together in his lap, leaning against the couch as he agreed, "Yeah, it has been. More so for you, I guess. Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Not really. I don't know. You can't change anything, I guess," she mumbled, taking a deep breath and letting it out extremely slowly.
"No, I can't, but I do have a sister with a growing one year old who'd probably be happy to give you clothes."
"It's fine. Apparently Desmond wants to make me a whole wardrobe for the baby," she said, rolling her eyes a bit. "And baby clothes can't be that expensive, right? It's fine."
Quinn's eyebrows rose, "That'll help, Desmond making clothes, but babies grow fast Penny, you'll be going through stuff faster than you feel you can keep up sometimes."
"Well he can't just have hand me downs. I'll be fine. I get paid enough to buy clothes for a while, and if I get a job here I'll probably still be on about equal payroll or something."
"Alright, but if you need anything, let me know. Okay?"
"Yeah. I will." Penny wanted people to stop treating her like a charity case. She was upset enough already, and it wasn't helping, but she'd snapped at Quinn enough for one night. She sighed, running her hand down her face again, before lying down on the couch.
Quinn pulled her feet into his lap and asked, "Foot massage?"
"Always," she grinned, wiggling her toes and letting out a contented sigh.
