Draco Malfoy ([info]_dm) wrote in [info]veritaserum_rp,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
It was a lazy Sunday afternoon, and Parvati had popped out to run some errands for an hour or so. Having wandered around Malfoy Manor aimlessly for about ten minutes, Draco finally decided to relax in the garden with an ice cold beer. Having just had his first sip, a house elf interrupted his train of thought with a tray of chicken salad sandwiches and an announcement.

"Sir, your brother is here to see you. Shall I send him to you?"

Nodding his assent, Draco straightened up slightly and instinctively combed his hand through his hair. It was really only Parvati who ever saw him in a truly relaxed state at this point in his life.

It was a bit weird sometimes, having the house-elves titter about to check with the man of manor seeing as Iggy still hadn't fully come to terms with Draco being the head of the family. It was odd seeing his older brother lording over the house they had grown up in, played in, and occasionally hid in (The latter from the previous man of the manor, their father). Draco was always so many steps ahead of him in life. Sometimes it sucked being the little brother.

Clearing his throat awkwardly as he walked through the house toward the garden, Iggy thought over the things he wanted to say to the elder Malfoy. He had rehearsed the words many times, but they still made his ears grow red. Emotion wasn't something Malfoys did on a regular basis. He had to admit, that seeing his brother with his wife had done leaps and bounds for their own relationship. Afterall, seeing stern Draco Malfoy bend to the cuddles of his bouncing Gryffindor had made him a little less fearsome overall.

Iggy had waited, watching from the Dowager house across their land, until said wife had left and then made his way over to the Manor. Outside, he found his brother sipping on some beer with impeccably groomed hair as always. For a moment Iggy felt awkward about his messy blonde locks and hurriedly tried to style it. Forever the youngest, always trying to copy the elder.

"Hey, Draco." He greeted. "What's up?"

"I have an hour of peace and quiet before the tornado returns," Draco smiled easily. "Did you want a drink or food?" he asked, reaching over to grab a sandwich for himself. This form of casual eating was foreign to the Malfoys-- every meal was very proper and ornate, served in the dining room with silver ware. But things were different now on the grand, sweeping property. It wasn't uncommon to see a jug of fresh squeezed lemonade sitting on around, a bag of chips on the coffee table, or the lady of the house curled up on the couch with a bowl of three sickle noodles from an instant packet.

An unannounced visit was also uncommon for the Malfoys, but Draco assumed that Iggy too was embracing a more open lifestyle. Not that Draco necessarily approved, in that respect... he still liked to send an owl over before dropping in on any one he knew.

"Can I have a bit of both?" He reached for a sandwich, "Actually, I'm starving. Mother took Ebster to Italy with her and the other elves are absolute crap at groceries. I do think your idea to send Cece to our house might work best for us, actually. She seems pretty good at most jobs according to Parvati."

"How's work?" Iggy felt as if he should butter his brother up a little. He wasn't sure why exactly, only that he felt nervous asking. Since Lucius was no longer with them, Draco was the patriarch of the family and his approval on matters was paramount. Iggy and Parvati often rolled their eyes about the formality of such things, but Iggy was still a Malfoy and these things seemed as ingrained into him as the routine of breathing.

"It's unusual for Parvati to extricate herself from you on a Sunday, where did she go?" Iggy savoured a bite of one of the chicken salad sandwiches, "Ugh, who made this? Why did you get the elves to use white bread?" Iggy was very particular with breads.

"Why don't you take her with you on your way out then?" Draco suggested, flinching slightly at the reminder that his mother was in Italy. Who knows how she would handle all of those young men flirting with her. His fist curled slightly.

"Busy season just ended, actually." Because of this, Parvati hadn't wanted to leave the house, having just gotten her husband back-- she had even suggested calling on her parents to run the errand for her, but Draco assured her he would still be there when she returned.

"I still feel the effects of all that pressure leaving my system though," he admitted wryly, rubbing at his head a little. The beer helped.

"Parvati had to go handle something with one of her charities, she couldn't put it off," he responded, glad that his wife had taken the initiative to pursue her own interests. So many pureblood wives simply stayed home and shopped from the catalogues. Growing up, Draco assumed that this was how married life was supposed to look like-- and yet now, living a different reality, he was so happy that he wasn't trapped in that monotonous nightmare.

"It's actually rosemary foccacia," Draco corrected. "One of the best elves made it. Just because it's not bloody rye and bitter as hell," the elder Malfoy tsked. "I can have them make you mustard on pumpernickle if you like," he offered, referring to Iggy's bizarre but favorite childhood snack.

"Alright, thanks." Iggy smiled, eyeing his brother's fist. Unlike Draco, Iggy didn't feel the possessive streak to protect Narcissa. He was the baby and so loved his mother as all youngest sons did, with none of the guardian instinct of elder ones.

The house elf had brought Iggy a beer too and Iggy held out the bottle to his brother for a cheers. "Well, that's good. Last I heard you were about to let go of that idiotic accountant, did that all get figured out?"

"I know what rosemary foccacia is, Draco." Iggy frowned, annoyed. "I'm the one who taught you what it was. I was making a point. I guess your taste in bread and women are similar: sweet and fluffy." He smiled, pleased at his joke. "Actually, I would like that-" He gestured to the house elf who had already been bringing a plate over, well used to Iggy's tastes since childhood.

"So, um-" Iggy began to start his topic, but lost his bravado and feeling awkward, paused.

"I'm still unsure about him," Draco said, always pleased when his brother remembered things about his work life. "His last three reports were actually perfect. Suspiciously perfect, actually..." he took a casual sip and leaned back in his chair. "So I'm having him investigated," he said nonchalantly, completely unphased.

"Did you?" Draco frowned. "I thought Spencer taught me about foccacia..." he ignored his brother's joke about his wife. Har har har.

"So, um?" Draco echoed, always impatient with things like that. "If you don't start soon I'm going to launch into how the fiscal year of 2006 will be a great model for the next quarter," he threatened.

"Who's investigating? Andrews?" Iggy returned back just as nonchalantly. "Or Johnstone? Because Johnstone's gone a little off his rocker ever since his wife left him."

"What? No!." Iggy colored, ire rising. "I taught you about that. Spencer doesn't know things about bread. He calls ME about bread. Draco, remember when I took you to that baker's conference? We had foccacia there and you whinged on and on about how you liked it better than chocolate. Merlin. You don't remember anything about me." Iggy glared at his brother sullenly. Draco always did this. It started when they were 5 and 8 respectively and Draco was convinced that Goyle had been the one to discover the little pathway behind the hill in the back of the gardens, when it had been Iggy that had done so and SHOWN Draco just a few days prior.

"Start soon?" Iggy blinked, "What makes you think I want to start anything?" It was always good to learn what may give you away to someone.

"Andrews, obviously, I'm pretty sure I told Johnstone we won't be calling upon him anymore... hard to tell though, I went through quite a list of people to fire that day..."

Draco smiled at his brother's outburst, looking a little too pleased with himself. For some reason, bread was a very touchy subject for Iggy, which was odd-- it's not like they had eaten an inordinate amount of bread growing up. Parvati had started calling him the Bread Prince. Draco wasn't sure if he was okay with this yet.

"Well, you said 'so, um'," Draco listed, "And you shifted your posture, and you broke eye contact. I hate waiting for information. I'm just going to sit here and enjoy myself until you grow up," Draco decided, the brutish older brother as always. Shutting his eyes, he stretched his legs out in front of him and took a deep breath, allowing the sun to play on his arrogant features.

Sometimes, Iggy hated his elder brother. Iggy was well aware of Parvati's nickname for him, he didn't mind it much other than the times when Parvati added 'sweet' before it. He had complained about her demasculanizing him but she usually then made impossibly pouty faces and Iggy found it hard to stay angry. His only saving grace was that in the same breath, his brother's wife often forced his brother to coo or cuddle her. Iggy always had a smug smile at those times.

"Honestly, Draco." Iggy sighed, flicking some beer at him childishly. "You're such a git."

Iggy's forehead creased as he looked up toward the sun. While Draco's features were arrogant, Iggy's were similar but rounder and more stocky, giving him an open, kinder look. This had made people in his year underestimate him, but Iggy had proven the Malfoy in him and quickly squashed any threats to his dominance in Slytherin. (It had helped that Draco was also always swishing around, but Iggy preferred to pretend it was only on his own merit).

"Well, just that, you know. I'm at the age you were when you got married and well, I've decided to ask someone to be my wife." Iggy hadn't had a girlfriend in over a year. In fact he spent most of his time with their extended family and friends.

Ah, yes. Wizards often made the mistake of underestimating Iggy. Draco actually loved it when they would attend meetings with their lawyers, accountants, property managers etc. Knowing that Draco would be the unforgiving wall, they often tried to appeal to Iggy, who would cut them down swiftly and coldly. The shock on the respective wizard's face always made Draco smile with glee.

But at his younger brother's news, Draco's face immediately twisted up distastefully.

"You better not be marrying Astoria Greengrass. That bloody family has been hinting at that arrangement for year, trying to bribe me... as if there is anything they could possibly give us that we don't already have. And don't you dare marry into the Parkinson family, Pansy will be crowing around the Manor every day with some excuse, she'll probably mark the place up like a dog--" Draco ranted. As the new lord of the manor, Draco was exponentially possessive of his belongings and family.

As Draco ranted, Iggy sat patiently, a bemused expression on his face. He knew his brother well, and the two could either play off one another or accommodate the other easily. "Astoria is so passive, do you really think I'd go for that?" Iggy asked once Draco had calmed down. "Gross, why would I marry someone you used to date? We never had hand-me-downs in our family, Drake, we're not starting now."

"Don't worry." Iggy had lost his nervousness, "It is someone you know, but I doubt you could guess. She's very pretty."

He decided to drag this out a bit. It was one of the first times he knew something his brother didn't and he wanted to follow his brother's thought process.

"Well of course you wouldn't date Pansy," Draco tsked, "but she has that cousin... Admittedly she looks rather nice, but I'm very certain that she's undergone some sort of procedure." It went without saying that Draco strongly disapproved of any type of cosmetic procedure.

"Pretty, eh? There aren't that many pretty pureblood witches," he frowned, searching his head. Although it pained him, some local newspapers had suggested in their opinion columns that it was difficult to find attractive purebloods because of the lack of diverse genes. This made Parvati even more of a gem.

God help him if Iggy was to have fallen for a witch who used any sort of spell enhancement. He was fairly sure that modern times or not, Draco would have him locked away in the dungeons. "Yup, she had her nose changed. And I'm certain she was fatter when we were in school."

At Draco's comment, the devil in Iggy came out. Iggy had a snarky side just like Draco, but more often he tended to be simply cheeky. "Who said she was pureblood?" As a precaution his fingers curled about his wand, just in case he needed to throw a shielding spell at a moment's notice.

"Who said she was purebloo--" Iggy started, a gleam in his eyes, hand on wand. But as Iggy was finishing his sentence, Draco was already leaping towards his brother, hands ready to tighten around his Iggy's throat.

"WHAT?" he roared, so enraged that it was almost comical. The blonde's typically pale face was flushed a hot red, and he reached for Iggy's collar but the younger Malfoy was already twisting and trying to get out of his brother's grasp.

"ARE YOU ON DRUGS IS THIS SOME SORT OF PHASE THAT--"

In retrospect, Iggy should have probably expected the physical retaliation over a magical one. "Oh F-" He cursed as his brother tackled him off the deck chair and onto the thankfully somewhat forgiving grass.

It would be comical to anyone watching, but not to the one currently getting assaulted. Draco was taller than Iggy, but Iggy was stockier - perhaps not quite as strong as his elder brother but his ace in the hole was simply the fact that he was well used to getting beaten on by Draco, and so was quite experienced at squirrelling away. Grabbing his brother's clutching hands, Iggy twisted and managed to push Draco slightly to the right, so he could wrench away to the left.

"I was kidding!!" He gasped, red faced. "Kidding!" This would be a fairly amusing sight as well, both dignified Malfoy men, sprawled on the grass, glaring at one another. He scrambled for his fallen wand in case Draco may consider another attack for being joked at/disrespected/whatever it was he formulated in his brain, and held it out.

"KIDDING?" Draco roared, grabbing at Iggy once more despite the fact that Iggy had retrieved his wand. He was slightly out of breath-- rage could be so exhausting. Staring deep into his younger brother's eyes, he loosened his grip and seemed to let go.

"What kind of outrageous joke is that?" Draco spat, shooting a side glance at Iggy before being consumed once more with anger and lunging at the sweet Bread Prince. "DON'T JOKE LIKE THAT," he shouted one last time before poking Iggy in the eyes and letting him go for good.

"Don't you dare try that with Mother, your ear drums will literally break," he scowled under his breath, pulling at the grass beneath him to curb some of his left over anger.

Iggy's wand tumbled from his hand before he could even get a good grip on it and he found him self at the mercy of his elder brother. He sort of wished Parvati had been here to stop this attack. She would have protected him. Damn.

To his credit, he managed to shove his palm beneath his brother's chin and push him off so that his jab at the eyes only hit after Iggy had managed to close them and move back so the stab wasn't as painful as Draco had been hoping.

"You're such a bloody asshole." Iggy complained, breathing hard. "You could have blinded me!" His eyes were watering from the jab, which made Iggy even angrier: Tears? Malfoy? Those things did not go together. Trust his brother to do such an underhanded move.

"-And my eardrums are already broken. Thanks, Father." Iggy spat, sarcastically, getting to his feet and brushing the grass of his trousers.

"Oh please, that wouldn't have blinded you," Draco rolled his eyes. "You've been poked how many times now in your life? And here you are, still with perfect vision."

Draco's lip curled in reaction to the comparison Iggy drew. He was mature enough now not to become completely undone by the comment about his father, but the hateful distaste on his face was clear. He would never be his father. He would never be Lucius Malfoy. Some months, he felt like he was repeating that to himself every morning. "I am not my father. I am not my father." The lively frustration in his face briefly blanked into a very grave one before reverting to a neutral expression.

"So," Draco changed the subject, "Who is she?" He rubbed the back of his neck distractedly.

"Yeah!" Iggy scowled, cheeks hot with anger, "Tons of times and all by you, you sadist! I have perfect vision because I know how to evade you. Ass." He added the last insult with a huff, feeling very much the victim.

Iggy eyed his brother with some grim satisfaction. He knew Lucius was a sore spot for Draco, and he earnestly didn't think the elder Malfoy was anything like their father (well, except in height that damn bugger). Yet that didn't stop him from wielding the comparison like a weapon when he felt it was necessary.

...But then came the regret. Iggy sighed. "I didn't mean it like that, you know. You'll be an alright Dad, you'll be forced into it - any child of Parvati's will giggle and twist you about their little finger. Besides, if you were Father, you know I'd have been Crucioed in a heartbeat." He wasn't joking.

"Well-" Iggy also mirrored Draco's stance, rubbing his own neck, "Well, the thing is you have to promise not to freak out. Or poke me-" He glared at his older brother. "She's really no one you would guess, I don't think. She's a little older than me."

"Your eyes probably grew stronger under duress," Draco smiled. In a bizarre way, he enjoyed bickering with Iggy. Maybe that's why he picked on him so much. It was a rare, feeling this way-- as if he was part of a normal family. Parvati might make Draco feel loved, but pureblood society and wealth had destroyed most chances of just being a normal kick back family. That's ultimately why he loved her instant noodle habit, and why he loved taunting his brother. For the normalcy of it all.

Moving past the discussion of their father, Draco raised a brow.

"Older? How much? You said she's beautiful?" He started. "You haven't stolen Dina away from Spencer, have you? I told him to put a ring on her! I could tell she had a thing for blondes," Draco looked pleased with himself.

Iggy gave his brother an exasperated look. "No, are you kidding? First, I don't fancy being murdered by Spencer. Second, I'm not that keen into women who are close to my height." Or who were his height ... Iggy was no stranger to a small heightening charm.

"Say, if it was Dina, how would you even manage that? Spencer would be out for blood." Iggy asked, though already knowing his brother would put him first. Blood was everything. Friendships could always be temporary and viewed as a means to an end in pureblood culture.

"And no, she's actually pretty close to home." Iggy's neck was starting to warm and he pulled at his collar like an agitated child. "We spend a lot of time with her."

"Yeah, you and Dina are pretty close in height... It's weird, sometimes you look the same height even!" Draco commented thoughtfully. "Must be her shoes or something." Indeed... must be Dina's shoes.

"I honestly don't know," Draco laughed, enjoying the situation now that it was fictional. He imagined reasoning with a wrathful Spencer, and mused over the flawed logics he could throw at the Gryffindor, knowing full well they didn't make emotional sense...

One time, Spencer had wanted to purchase his 37th encyclopedia set, but Draco had said "you know what they say about 37 encyclopedia sets..."

"What?"

"Oh, you know..."

Although Spencer called Draco an idiot, he still reluctantly put the set away, not wanting to risk anything. Dina had sent Draco a bottle of wine the next day.

"We spent a lot of time with her?" Draco's face twisted. Beautiful, slightly older, spent a lot of time... no one was making sense. "You say she's beautiful.... do you mean beautiful on the inside?" he asked, delicately.

"Yeah, she wears really tall shoes." Iggy whistled innocently, daring his brother to contradict with a firm set to his lips. His height was not something to joke or comment about. Only Iggy could mention something self deprecating, anyone else would get a wandful of fury.

"No!" Iggy exclaimed defensively, thinking of the object of his affection. "She's very beautiful and you would definitely think so! How can you possibly not get it so far?" He tired of this game now, "I'm asking Padma to marry me, Draco."

Draco didn't really have a wide range of facial expressions. It was either stony cold, black with rage, or the rare warm and crinkly smile, usually reserved for his wife.

Well, that, and the vaguely perplexed look he often got around Spencer.

But if anyone had been able to capture his facial expression at that moment, they would have definitely immortalized a rare moment for Draco indeed.

For once, Draco couldn't decide how he felt.

"This is.... so... weird." Draco grabbed for his beer and took a large swig. "I don't think I like this." He eyed Iggy suspiciously. "This means all sorts of creepy things."

Iggy recoiled a little at his brother's expression. What was this...this neutrality ...?! Had Draco's features ever twisted in such a way before? It looked painful....

"You don't like this?" Iggy repeated, a little stunned. "But I love her." Would Draco put a stop to it? He couldn't let him do that, could he? But what would a marriage be without the blessing of-

-Iggy's nose wrinkled as Draco continued. "What? What creepy things?" Then quickly his hands went up in a defensive manner, knowing his brother's intense possessiveness of his wife, "I swear I haven't been perving over Parvati ... but obviously her looks did make me keep my standards high."

It was painful. Draco was probably going to get a gray hair out of this.

"You are essentially marrying a copy of my wife," Draco replied, almost to himself. He took another sip of beer, eying Iggy very intently. It was the look Draco used to give Iggy when he was trying to figure out if Iggy really HADN'T ratted him out to their mother.

"Did this not occur to you? That this would be strange of you?" Draco asked. "I assume your feelings for her are very genuine, but conceptually... conceptually... this is messed up, okay?"

More often than not, Iggy HAD in fact been the tattletale. But he had grown quite apt at finding curtains, furniture or his mother's form to hide behind. This time however, Iggy made a face back at his brother as he was intensely glared at.

"Well, of course it occured to me, but in all fairness - I liked Padma when we were kids, so technically, YOU married a copy of my first crush." There had been that one time that Iggy had done something to anger Draco, to which the elder had ominously given him a five minute headstart. Confused and only five years old, Iggy had run to the fireplace and flooed to the only house he remembered the name off (Since the Patils had had a gala the weekend before). There he had followed around the Patil sisters for the entire afternoon until their parents had discovered him.

"And they are quite genuine. She's not exactly like Parvati, you yourself must know that. She's very clever and bookish and she has theories on just about everything - it's really marvelous. Oh, and she's wildly stubborn which is really a turn on. And well, we've already married into their family, it unifies things much more, wouldn't you think?"

[info]_dm

"I cannot believe you are even trying to use that as an even vaguely valid reason," Draco dismissed. "That's something Parvati would do, you two are becoming too close," he glowered. "Apparently so, since you've taken up with her copy!"

Draco leaned back slightly, not wanting to know what turned Iggy on about Padma.

"Yes, I know they are very different girls. I didn't just pick one randomly, you know. Unification doesn't mean a damn thing," he added. "If anything, I'd want to avoid that entirely," Draco warned.

He would never tell Iggy this, but... there was a small part of Draco that was genuinely unhappy about this. Because Parvati was his... out of everything in his life, she was the one thing he had gotten to choose. He got to marry her because he loved her, it was nothing to do with politics, or work, or family, or money... She was honestly the only thing he felt he could name that had nothing to do with any of that. And if Iggy married Padma, he felt like he was now forced to share Parvati, somehow. Share her family. Parvati's family would not also be Iggy's family. This one woman who was completely his own was now no longer solely his.

"Right." Iggy sighed, deflating. His eyes trailed over his bottle of beer on the grass and felt suddenly very far away from his brother. "And why would you want to avoid that?"

He suddenly felt very lost. There on one side was the bright shine of his future with Padma, who, like Iggy, knew what it was like when someone you loved met their soulmate and ceased to be a sibling first and foremost. On the other, was his harmonious relationship with his brother and his name.

"So what are you telling me? Are you saying I can't? Because if you got to marry for love, Draco, then I think it's unfair for you to expect otherwise from me. And on that note, I'd appreciate it if you'd stop calling Padma a copy. She is the eldest." Iggy was flushing now, angry.

What was with Draco? He was always so possessive. Ever since they were kids. He never wanted Iggy to share in anything, always forcing the younger brother to stare enviously at his toys and adventures and only occasionally deeming to allow him to take part. Iggy was tired of being the little one, of being the bachelor youth, he wanted what Draco and Parvati had, and more importantly, he wanted it with Padma. Draco, though having bore the brunt end of Lucius' temper, still had been the heir, the favourite. He had a purpose, a structure and a romance the type that storybooks wrote off. It wasn't fair. Iggy should get to have this one thing. His own precious little jem.

Seeing his brother genuinely deflate made Draco sigh.

"Never mind the avoiding bit... Look I'm happy you found someone you love, let's just leave it at that for now," he concluded. "And yes, I know Padma's not really just a copy.... it's just a bit of a shock, I'm sorry that I wasn't able to immediately congratulate you," Draco apologized. "I am happy for you, really." He even smiled faintly. "I just... have to adjust to you being part of that life now."

It didn't take much for Iggy to be pleased. Indeed, just a fraction of his brother's approval had his face breaking into a rakish grin. "Really?!" His gray eyes lit and he stood up that much straighter. "And I know it's odd and strange, why do you think I haven't been able to mention it for so long? I didn't want to ... to intrude unless it was something real."

Iggy peered up at his brother, almost looking as if he was still a child, "I could....well....help out sometimes now, you know ... back up?

"Back up for what?" Came a curious voice as the lady of the manor came flying into the garden, dropping a few shopping bags by the lawnchairs. What? So she had finished her errands early and stopped by for a quick shop on her way home, so what? "Hi bread prince!" She greeted with a smile before ambushing her husband from the back in a cuddle.

"Hi Dragon!" She bounced up on her tip toes to ask for a kiss.

Iggy's eyes immediately met with Draco's in an alarmed glance. He gave a firm susceptible shake of the head to indicate that his sister-in-law was under no circumstance to be told.

Parvati caught the grim look and blinked, "What's going on?"

Draco's eyes immediately landed on Parvati's shopping.

"Didn't you already reach your monthly limit?" Draco raised an eyebrow disapprovingly.

"And nothing's going on. What on earth did you buy?" he removed Parvati from his back as if she was a child and moved towards her precious collection of paper carrier bags.

On cue, Parvati's pretty features scrunched in a mix of guilt and irritation. "Well, actually, it's a new month today. So, there." She stuck her tongue out at the taller blonde, crossing her arms in a pout after being disentangled from him.

"Actually," Iggy continued smoothly, "I was just telling Draco that I could be back up for him about your spending habits, since you don't really seem to listen." Internally, Iggy cringed, sending a mental apology to his sister-in-law for them squashing her curiousity by scolding her for no real reason.

Parvati flushed, unused to being ganged up on. "What? But ... but they're not even bad, and this is really unfair and - Draco!!" She rushed to grab the bag he was reaching into. "They're just clothes! Clothes that Iggy shouldn't see!" Parvati hissed, eyes wide at the idea of her new lingerie being exposed to the eyes of her darling brother.

Draco did not like losing control of the situation, and Parvati buying lingerie was making him lose control of the situation.

"Anyways," he said firmly, "we should start decanting the wine for dinner and such," he began to usher Parvati and his brother into the house. "Iggy, are you staying? The house elves are making flaky chicken pot pie."

Looking at his wife, he then directed his attention to his brother. What did Iggy think when he looked at Parvati? He felt a bit ill at the idea of Iggy now having the right to be part of the Patil network. What if Mr. Patil found Iggy more delightful than him? What if Mrs. Patil invited Iggy over for an event and didn't invite Draco?

Sighing, Draco went to take another sip of beer only to find the bottle empty.

"And I need another beer. Do you want?" he asked his brother. "Parvati, did you want some pink wine before dinner?"

Parvati confiscated her shopping bags with a disgruntled hmph. Gathering them to her, she still eyed her husband suspiciously. "I don't know if I want Iggy to stay-" She began loudly, "Trying to tell me off." She glared at her brother-in-law, feelings still hurt.

"But. Parvati. I'm starving over at the Dowager house! Would you have me wither away into nothing?" He gave her a puppy dog expression.

"Yes, I would have you starve, traitor." Parvati sidled up near Draco, curling herself to him once more. "Besides you have all that bread to fill you up. Just add a little oil and you'll be fine."

As they walked inside, she turned to the house elf waiting for them. "Master Draco and Ignatius would like a beer each, please. A glass of rosea for me." Her statement showed that Iggy was, in fact, invited to dinner, but her cold shoulder gave him nothing to cling to.

Iggy sighed, "How come she never cold shoulders you like this?" He asked his brother as they seated themselves at the formal dining table.

________________

"Because I'm more delightful than you," Draco replied dryly, although it was a secret reference to his deep rooted fears.

The house elves returned swiftly with their drinks, and Draco sourly opened the beer bottle with the opener they offered him. He had once tried to perfect the party trick, where one opened a beer bottle by knocking it against the edge of the table--but alas, he only ruined a 4000 year old table in Malfoy Manor with his failed attempts.

"A sip?" Draco offered the bottle to his wife dotingly, knowing full well she didn't like beer.

"Make sure you give a smaller portion to Iggy," he advised the elves as they passed by. "He's on some fad diet," he lied, just for the sake of messing with his little brother. "Oh, sorry, was Parvati not supposed to know?"

"Wrong. I'm definitely the more lovable brother." Iggy returned out of the corner of his mouth, watching as his sister-in-law sat down, just in case she chose to poison his drink.

"No, thank you." Parvati gave her husband a winning smile at his doting, reaching for her own glass.

She had been keen on ignoring Iggy when Draco commented about his diet.

"What?" Iggy spluttered, "No, I'm not!" He stared accusingly at his brother. "I'm not."

"A diet? Do you like someone, Iggy?" Parvati couldn't help herself, she was intrigued, "You know, they should love you back just the way you are: You're a Malfoy! It doesn't matter if you're thin or not."

"But I'm - wait, are you saying I'm not?" Iggy gaped. He was stocky but well built, damnit!

"-But I do understand wanting to lose some weight," Parvati continued, thoughtfully, She tapped her blue fingernails against her wineglass as she contemplated her already slim figure, "So I'll join you! We can do it together - Just a smaller portion for me, too!" She informed the elves.

Draco's diet joke had backfired.

"No, she will not have a smaller portion. If anything, give her a slightly bigger portion," he glowered, not a trace of amusement in Draco's face. The house elves huried away.

"Iggy's not actually on a diet," Draco sighed. "I was just making his life difficult, of course you have to jump on that bandwagon like a madwoman." The salad appetizers were swiftly brought to the table, and Draco violently stabbed a crouton with his fork in defiance of his brother and wife.

"Who would date this jackass anyways?" the blonde taunted, "He'd probably abandon his date for a baguette convention."

Parvati had thought she had found a way to innocently eat less without Draco getting cross, but she was wrong. The food nazi would not let up for even one moment.

Her lips turned downward as Draco ordered the elves to give her a larger portion. Squirming in her seat and pushing around the lettuce on her plate, Parvati sullently forked a cucumber slice. "It doesn't make me mad to want to lose some weight." She attempted. "I just want to look nice for summer." Parvati, though thin, had a complex with her large chest and shaped bottom, since even Draco had dated waif like girls in the past.

"Hey-!" Iggy's cheeks colored, "No, I wouldn't! And she'd probably come with, so you can just shove it." Then, as he thought about it, "Hang on, do you not like going to those with me? I thought you did?"

"Boys!" Parvati's eyes were wide, "No cursing at the dining table!" She pushed the baby tomatoes to the side of her plate, "And what do you mean 'she?', so there IS someone! Draco, do you know?"

Draco had heard Parvati's madness quite a few times, now that they were married. It had gotten to the point where he couldn't even muster much to say-- it made him so angry and confused. "Nice for summer," he echoed bitterly. He shot Parvati a flat look that clearly read, really, Parvati? Really??

At his brother's demands, his nostrils flared slightly. Those conventions always stirred up mixed feelings within Draco. Yes, fresh baked bread was lovely. Who didn't love the smell? Only monsters! But it was still so... lame.

"I do..." Draco literally dragged out the word as if he was in pain, "They're just... so unique... I'm not quite sure what to make of them." At his wife's demands, he shrugged. "Yeah right. As if there would be someone for Iggy. Probably a stout baker named Bertrea who has a wonky nose and awkward joints."

Parvati quailed slightly beneath her husband's flat gaze and scowled back at him, pouting like a child. Draco always got so angry, he never understood that she had to watch her weight so that she would be attractive for him! Men were hypocrites.

Somewhat appeased, Iggy quickly turned back to anger. "Okay, what?!" He dropped his fork onto his plate with a clatter. "You damn well know I can do a lot better than that-"

"Iggy!" Parvati admonished again, not liking her peaceful dining hall deteriorating into the tables at Hogwarts.

He ignored her. "I know why you're doing this Draco, you're being a bloody git about it."

"About what?" Parvati asked, now thoroughly confused.

"Better than Bertrea? Well, there was that twig like witch who once fancied you. She talked very slowly though, so I don't know how well she'd fit in with the family," Draco smiled, enjoying his brother's ire. "Iiiiigggy.... Long pause. Oh... Long pause. ...Right. ....White flour is different than whole wheat," he mocked. "I don't imagine she'd be very comfortable to lie with though," Draco added. Although it was vulgar, it did put down twig like girls.

"How am I being a git? As long as these girls make you happy, Iggy, we won't judge. Or live a bachelor's life. We can call you the Lone Wolf Baker. That sounds cool, no?"

Parvati smiled at Draco's comment about the overly skinny girl and squeezed his knee beneath the table. "Yuck, she was horrid. Iggy, please tell me you have better taste in witches than that."

A vein in Iggy's neck was about to burst (Though, despite himself, that name was pretty cool). Trying to keep his temper under reigns, he struggled with his breathing for a moment.

Parvati piped up, "That does sound pretty cool! Maybe it'd be better, Iggy, than you being attracted to all these odd girls..."

"Parvati." Iggy continued through gritted teeth. "I'm interested in Padma." There, now his brother had nothing to hold over him. Time and time again Iggy had made the mistake of thinking his elder brother wouldn't torment him to the point of insanity.

The dining hall went deathly silent. The house elves stopped in their bussing of the next course. The paintings stared in surprise.

Parvati blinked rapidly, her long eyelashes sweeping her cheeks for a moment. She tilted her head and in a voice that was altogether too high said, "What?"

It was a shame, Draco had just crafted a very delightful story about this supposed Bertrea and Iggy. Ah, well. Maybe he'd rework it for another situation down the line.

Meanwhile, he watched his wife's face as his brother (so quickly) caved in and confessed his juicy secret. You could hear a pin drop at the silence.

"I'm interested in Padma and I want to ask her---"

"Out?" Draco suggested, knowing that Iggy got too passionate sometimes to think about long term repercussions. "Of course you'd want it to be a surprise."

Was it a surprise that Iggy caved quickly? He had always been like that, except, thankfully, in front of Lucius who he was able to keep a straight face around out of fear.

He shot a look as Draco supplemented his sentence, but one quick glance at Parvati made him very thankful.

"You. Want to ask my...sister out?!" Parvati's fingers curled about her knife as thoughts flew through her mind. First, there was shock. Second, there was excitement. Third, there was jealousy and possessiveness. And finally, there was confusion.

"But....that's like ... like incest. I don't know ... I mean, I've joked about it with you both before but ... I don't think so. It wouldn't be a good idea. If it didn't work out, then our whole family would be messed up. Draco, tell him." Parvati was shaking her head, decidedly against this at the moment.

Poor Iggy. Draco actually felt for him at that moment. Eyes crinkling fondly, he held his wife's hand.

"I'm sure Iggy's serious about Padma and wouldn't pursue her for a summer fling," Draco offered, hoping his brother would be able to convince his lovely wife. "Certainly an upgrade from Bertrea and Twig Witch," he added solemnly.

"I AM serious about Padma," Iggy agreed, almost pleadingly. The problem was, it was very difficult for Iggy to look truly serious about anything. The only time those Malfoy grey eyes ever clouded with outwardly visible solemnity was at the mention of his father, or when he was discussing bread. Otherwise, it was very difficult to gage how the younger Malfoy was really feeling-- that youthful, stocky face was very distracting.

Even as her husband took her hand, Parvati felt oddly cold. It wasn't that she didn't want Iggy to marry, to live his own life, it was just that she was very possessive of those things she considered hers, and Draco's life - his family - was part of that. It would take some getting used to it, for Parvati to be able to share.

Her lips scrunched up as she tried to think. "But, how do I know that? I mean, you've only ever left girls heartbroken and Padma is older than you, Iggy, and she wants to get married soon -" Parvati was now protective of her sister, not wanting her to get hurt. She took a long breath, "Do you feel as if Padma would want this?"

"Yes." Iggy attempted firmly, "I do think so."

Parvati looked to her husband now, not sure and needing his direction and support. "I don't know ..."

"I won't leave her broken hearted, I know I won't," Iggy said fiercely. "I want to get married soon, too!" he blurted out.

Draco's expression didn't change. Well, maybe his mouth twitched a little bit.

"I vouch for my brother," Draco decided. "He's really grown up in the past year, you know? And I think this will work out." His tone was final, but his eyes implored Parvati to trust him.

When Parvati would later find out that Iggy had planned to propose all along, and that Draco had known before her, Draco was sure to get a sound beating from his wife. But until then, all was well in Malfoy Manor. All was well.
