Everyone said that it was a pity that Vivian Davis died so young. They agreed that she'd been an inspiration to hostesses everywhere, and that high society was worse off for her passing. They talked about her beauty and her accomplishments, and that one time she managed to keep the French Minister's wife busy during a party that her husband had brought his mistress to. No one talked about the fact that she'd spent the past five years in the mental ward at St. Mungo's. No one mentioned her husband, who'd turned his wand on himself after the fall of the Dark Lord, or that her son was rotting away in Azkaban and wouldn't even know that his mother was dead. And as the service went on, no one mentioned much about her at all; they turned towards more social and pleasant topics.
Tracey grabbed another glass of wine off the tray that the house elf was carting around and tossed down its contents in one go. She'd lost track of how many she'd had, but she knew it wasn't enough. They hadn't even gotten to the elegy yet and already the guests were on to brokering deals and setting up business meetings over her mother's casket. She supposed that was what came about when a funeral was set up like a social gathering. No discreet pews here: the guests were all milling around unfettered, snacking on hors d'oeuvres and sipping wine. The only thing that marked this gathering as different from any old tea party was the subdued atmosphere and the casket at the front of the room. It was enough to make a girl want to shake things up a bit.
