Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Everyone
What: Bridging the Gap Event!
Where: Jones' Books
When: 2-4p, Oct 15
Rating: PG-13

Megan had spent the past several weeks preparing for this event, and it showed. The shop had gone through a serious make over to prepare. A giant screen hung outside the shop, elevated so everyone stuck outside could see. A large table inside sagged under the weight of dozens of copies of Natalie Thompson's book, Bridging the Gap: Making a Wizard-Muggle Marriage Work. Another held a plethora of baked goods and a few beverages for patrons. And the final table hosted the author herself, where she sat signing copies until it was time to give her speech.

The line of people, Megan was gleeful to notice, extended out the door. She shuffled through the crowd, making sure everything was in order, cheering up the bored-looking security that had been hired to work the event to the best of her ability.

Finally, it was time for the author to speak. "Excuse me everyone!" Megan's voice boomed over the crowd as she held her wand to her throat. "Thank you so much for coming out! At this time, we're going to ask everyone to take their seats." She allowed for a brief shuffling about, before speaking again. "As you know, we have an amazing guest with us this afternoon. Her book, Bridging the Gap, has been on the best-seller's list for several weeks, and Jones' Books is very excited to host her today. Please join me in welcoming Natalie Thompson!"

Ern yawned. Not out of boredom, the excitement was palpable, but from absolute lack of sleep. After apparating back home two hours past his initial plans (he had not getting splinched due to drowsiness down to an art), he had managed to crawl into bed for three hours prior to having to drag himself out to get to their latest event. He was at least somewhat pleased that everything seemed to be going as planned thus far. Those who have been volunteered (or voluntold) to show up have shown up and were stationed at various strategic points around the event and through the crowd.
Despite his exhaustion, he took his place standing close to the signing table but discreetly out of the way, thinking of the things that he would do once he returned home that evening. Watering the plant. Feeding his owl, Carin. Buying take-away for dinner. Then falling asleep once all duties to all the living creatures in his flat were performed. He clapped when everyone else clapped, figuring that he may as well look like he as paying attention to what was going on. He did the occasional scan of the audience, but only saw excited and interested faces.

Michael had gotten to the bookstore early to be there for Megan's big day. He had perused the crowds, smiling at the women who were there so bright-eyed and eager to meet this author. Well, anything to support a loving relationship, Michael was for it.

Seeing as Megan had somehow made her way to the other side, the tall brunette glanced around to gather how many faces he knew in the crowd. He grinned, seeing the police constable yawn, standing tight-knit.

Scratching the tip of his nose, he moseyed over but not too close, "Tired, officer?" he questioned, amused.

"I'm fine," Ern replied, rubbing his dark-circled eyes. He wish he wore sunglasses that afternoon since he knew that he looked tired. He removed his attention from the goings ons at the front to look around at who spoke to him. Michael from Hogwarts, his mind registered.
"Just a late shift last night. Early shift this morning." And it happened a few times, just enough to mess his sleep cycle up. After the NEWTs alertness potions were never the same. Who would've thought one's youth would cause that much trouble. "This is a relatively complex security job. Lots of stuff to account for. I'm sure you're aware that the topic is particularly controversial."

George had arrived early to help set up the screen and the speaker system, then had hung around to steal baked goods and try to act like he was interested in what was going on. He was sure the author was a lovely, intelligent woman, and he had bought her book to make Meg happy (and to get a free cookie) but he figured it would probably be just as interesting without her signature on the cover so he'd decided not to line up for an autograph.

He was humming quietly to himself as he looked around the store, amused by the size of the crowd and glad for it on Meg's behalf. It seemed like all sorts of people had turned out for the event, including... Daphne Greengrass? He stared in surprise. What was she doing here? She couldn't honestly be interested in the subject matter. Donning a smirk, he tip-toed up behind her and leaned over her shoulder.

"Come to get your book signed?" he asked, holding back a laugh.

Daphne hadn't planned on going to see the author who was speaking at Megan's bookstore. It had more of just... happened. She had been walking home when was hit by the sound of upbeat music and the blurred rumbling of a crowd of voices that soon came into view. Bridging the Gap: Making a Wizard-Muggle relationship work. Daphne snorted softly to herself as she examined the woman displayed on the screen signing book after book. People were actually paying to read this? What could she possibly have to say?

It was obviously completely ridiculous to expect Muggles to be able to understand and cope with the world they lived in. She never understood how Muggleborn parents could send their children off into a completely different universe. It was overly trusting of them, arrogant, even, to assume that their child would be safe in a place they could hardly grasp the idea of.

Indignant, Daphne had lingered after stumbling upon the event. Her arms were crossed as she waited for the author to give what she was sure would be a wonderful speech about how 'we weren't so different in the end', but they soon uncrossed as she jolted at the sound of an all too familiar voice. He would be here.

"Don't be ridiculous, Weasley," she snapped, resuming her defensive, arm-crossed posture. "I was walking by and saw all the commotion. And now I've decided to stay and hear the brilliant argument I'm sure she's going to put forth in favor of mixed marriages."

George couldn't help but smile. Of course Daphne thought that marriages between muggles and wizards couldn't work... but she was here, wasn't she? Maybe she might even learn something.

"Well, Fred and I did set up a pretty brill system so everyone outside can see and hear her once she starts speaking," he said, gesturing up at the screen Daphne had been looking at.

"But if you'd rather watch inside, I can get us in. I think Meg owes me a plus one for helping her out with the audio."

Daphne glanced up at the screen as he pointed to it. "You know, it is pretty impressive," she mused. Was that a compliment from the lips of Daphne Greengrass? Maybe.

"That won't be necessary. I'm sure it's unreasonably crowded in there. And we're fairly close to the screen as it is." Besides, it was easier to keep her temper when she didn't have to look someone in the eye.

"You really think so?" he asked, his smile brightening at her compliment. Those were pretty hard to come by, so he made sure to enjoy the ones he did get. "It did turn out better than I'd expected. As long as it doesn't fall and kill anyone."

"It is a bit easier to breathe out here," George admitted, glancing around the crowd. It was pretty sizable, but the people weren't packed as closely together as they were inside. "And it's a beautiful day."

Daphne smirked slightly at the thought. That would certainly put a damper on the afternoon, wouldn't it? Nothing like a tragedy to ruin a peace talk. "I'm sure your friend would like to make it through the afternoon unscathed as well."

The former Slytherin looked up to the sky at his words. "Yes. It is. She picked a good day to have this event. Lucky."

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure Meg wouldn't give me cookies anymore if I was the reason she was crushed to death in her own store," George agreed with a wrinkle of his nose.

"Yeah, rain would be kind of a disaster with this crowd," he nodded, looking back over at Daphne. Was she unusually pleasant today, or was he just imagining things? "So did you come out just for this, or were you on your way somewhere else?"

Daphne scoffed at the notion that she would have gone out of her way for an event like this. "No, of course not. I was walking home, and I saw the crowd." And heard the blaring music she was sure was a result of his large screen... thing. "I decided to stick around and see what wisdom she's going to impart on all of us." Her voice oozed with sarcasm at the notion that a Muggle could teach her, or any of the people standing there, anything.

"I never really took you for the scholarly type. Then again, I didn't take you for the pianist type, either. You're just full of surprises, aren't you?" he grinned at her, wondering if referencing their last meeting was going to send her back into her usual foul mood. Or maybe make her blush again.

"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked, frowning slightly. She wasn't intelligent? She made very good grades in school, actually, though she supposed they weren't up to Granger's standards (though, honestly, what was up to Granger's standards?) "I'm not the scholarly type?" And why was it so shocking that she played the piano, for that matter?

"You just... well. I mean," George stuttered, quickly trying to cover himself. He'd done it again, hadn't he? "This... doesn't really seem like your thing. Standing outside and listening to someone drone on about something you obviously don't agree with. It just seems like you'd... have better things to do. More important things."

"Well, you certainly have been driving the point home that I don't belong here," she replied, quirking a brow at his startled reaction. Why was it that she and George's thought processes always seemed to be heading in completely opposite directions?

It probably had something to do with the fact that they were completely opposite people.

From her place in the book signing line, Alicia was happy to see that so many people had turned up for the event. The book that she'd purchased on her outing with Mandy was tucked under her arm, a red bookmark marking her spot near the end. She wondered if she'd have enough time to finish it before she got to the front of the line. It really was a very good book.

An amused smile played on her face as she recalled the last time she'd stood in a line to have a book signed. It had been back in her fourth year when the oh-so-fabulous (or so everyone thought at the time) Gilderoy Lockhart had been at Flourish and Blotts. Alicia herself hadn't been all that interested, but her older sister and mother had. So, like a good daughter, she had waited patiently in line with them even though she'd been dying to head on over to Quality Quidditch Supplies to see what new items they had.

As the line moved forward, Alicia snapped out of her daydream and took a step up.

Fred stood outside admiring the handiwork of his and George's. A large screen hovered outside the bookshop, displaying Natalie sitting, smiling, and signing. Being rather good with his charms, Fred had helped getting the set up working with sound and clarity.

About to head inside and snatch some food and beverage, he passed by the line standing outside and saw a familiar head of hair.

"Ali! I didn't now you'd be here. You a fan?" he questioned, sauntering over with his hands in his trousers.

Looking over as she heard her name being called, she smiled at Fred.

"Hey!" she waved. Hoping that nobody around her was a die-hard fan, she shrugged and continued, "Oh, not really. I mainly just bought the book to see what she had to say, and it's pretty good, I guess. And I figured since I had the book and she was here I might as well have her sign it."

Pointing up to the screen, she asked, "You and George set that up, right? It's great."

"A likely story, Miss Spinnet," Fred said in a detective-like manner, "I bet you're really just wanting to marry a Pureblood, and you're thanking this woman for giving you the courage to finally ask that lucky man." Even if Alicia was a halfblood, it was still fun to tease her.

Fred grinned and tossed his head to the side in a nonchalant manner, "Yeah, well, George started it, so it was mainly all him."

Alicia stared at Fred with an amused expression on her face, before letting her smile slowly fade and her head droop down a little. "I never could keep a secret from you," she began, looking up at him.

Sighing, she crossed one foot over the other and gave him a nervous glance, "Do you think Percy will say yes?"

"Really?" she asked, looking impressed. "Well, I'll have to find him and tell him what an awesome job he did, then."

"I don'tknow, Percy's kind of old-fashioned and I don't think he'd accept a girl asking him. You might just have to wait and let him know your intentions," he said solemnly with the cross of his arms.

"Well, he was just here," Fred replied, eyebrows creasing in concern as he whipped his head around in search.

Oh. He found him, standing with the girl who had him in jumbles, Daphne.

She joined Fred in looking for George, spotting him a few seconds later.

"Hmm... he looks a little busy right now. I'll try to catch him later."

Nope. He couldn't hold it. With a half guffaw, half unbelievable look on his face, he waved her off.

"I can't do it. No, it's just too much. Please!" the image of her blue-green eyes wide with the hope of a crushing school girl, "Please don't ever chase after Percy. Promise me."

Fred's gaze cut from the back of his twin, and he nodded.

It was extremely tough, but Alicia managed to keep her act going. Puffing out her lower lip, she made it quiver and widened her eyes even more. "It's not funny, Fred! I can't deny my feelings. You'll just have to be okay with it."

A tiny laugh escaped her then, and she had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from bursting out even more. Holding her book up to shield her face, and the growing grin on it from him, she added, "If not, I don't know that we can be friends anymore."

Justin stood near the inner crowd of people as they shuffled around to sit. Preferring to stand, he kept his weight on one leg, one hand resting comfortably in the pocket of his trousers and the other holding a plastic cup of punch.

He had come to support Megan; this was obviously an exciting day for her, and to keep an eye on everything. After what the bookstore owner had said to him about the night of the ball, he had been a bit weary. All though he had no sort of power, he would be there supportively in case anything were to go wrong. Ernie and his men were there of course, so Justin relaxed a bit and listened to the woman speak.

To go or not to go. That was the question that had been plaguing Astoria all week. She knew it would probably be in her best interest not to go, because if her sister or parents got wind of it they would not be pleased. Still, her sudden and completely unexpected.(or explainable) fascination with Muggleborns seemed to be winning out in her decision-making.

Darn Justin and his ignition of this recent obsession.

Having a feeling that she probably wouldn't know anyone there anyway, she decided it was safe to attend the event. She could stay near the back and make a quick escape if necessary. She had been hovering near the edge of the group when who should she spot but Justin himself.

Well, she couldn't very well not at least say hello to him, could she? No, she couldn't. After all, he was going to be one of her fellow employees very soon. Keeping her head down, she slipped through the crowd until she was next to him.

"Hello."

Justin jumped, startled from the young woman suddenly appearing at his side.

"Oh, hello Ms. Greengrass," he said with a smile, easily recalling the name from the recesses of his brain. She'd been quite helpful to him, what with the shirt orders and the help of a job, "Enjoying the event?" he asked politely. He didn't know why, but he never would have expected to see her here.

"Astoria," she blurted out. "Now that we'll be working together, you may call me by my first name, if you wish." Very smooth. She cursed her brief lack of eloquence, before responding to his second question.

"It's... interesting," she told him honestly. "Are you enjoying it?" She wanted to ask him what his views on Purebloods and Muggleborns intermingling were, but she was afraid that might be coming on a little too strong.

Justin tilted his head to the side thoughtfully, "What a lovely name," he complimented.

"All right then, Astoria," he said, testing it out with some justification, "Oh yes, I mean, I support the subject strongly. I think the woman is brilliant and to face such adversities.. I don't think blood or magic should justify a marriage if you love someone, you love them for who they are, right?"

He scratched the back of his curly head, "Oh, sorry. I might have come off too strongly about that," he said sheepishly.

"Thank you," Astoria replied, almost shyly. She both loved and hated her name -- it was certainly unique, but she also kind of thought it sounded like a name for a fancy hotel.

"....Right," she agreed. She'd figured those would be his views. Not that she'd ever admit it, but she was a little jealous of him. He got to choose what he believed and supported -- he wasn't told.

"Oh, no, it's fine," she told him truthfully, shaking her head. That was something she liked about him -- the way he was passionate about things.

"You're quite welcome," he returned genuinely, before gesturing to the snacks table, "Would you like a drink? It does get a bit stuffy in here."

Justin almost forgets himself sometimes when he speaks about things that truly interest him. He almost forgets those in his company and he became aware that Astoria was indeed, a Pureblood and might not share his views, thus making her a tad uncomfortable.

"Please let me know if I make you uncomfortable," he stated more sheepishly as she waved it off.

Accepting something to drink would imply that Astoria would be sticking around for awhile. Did she want to do that? Yes, she supposed she did. She wasn't quite ready to leave Justin. Where else could she talk to him freely? "Yes, thank you, a drink would be lovely," she finally answered, beginning to take a few steps toward the refreshment table.

"You don't make me uncomfortable at all," she told him, staring at him without blinking.

Smiling, Justin slipped a cup from the stack and the ladle from the bowl. In a gentlemanly manner, he politely handed over the cup to her.

He blinked in a way that she did not, ironically feeling a tad shaken by the way she stared so adamantly at him, "Oh, well that's a good thing, then." he amended, relaxing back into his comfortable stance.

"If it's not too bold to ask, how do you feel about the subject yourself, Ms-" he paused, nearly missing his beat, then corrected himself, "Astoria?"

Taking the cup from Justin, she smiled in thanks and took a sip of the drink.

Nearly choking on the punch at his next question, Astoria was at a loss as to how to answer. Even though she didn't entirely agree with her family on quite a few issues, she didn't exactly go around broadcasting such.

"I... well, to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure," she told him matter-of-factly. That seemed safe enough, although perhaps a bit surprising since she was a Pureblood.
