Okay, okay, so it wasn't first thing in the morning, but Illyana was trudging outside as soon as she was awake enough to remember that she'd promised Gambit a meeting. She ran her fingers through her hair, deciding that she had to go rooting around later today for a comb of some sort, and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. After pulling on her sandals, she was out and heading toward the clock tower. She'd sort of noticed the monitors around town as she walked, but wasn't quite awake enough to really pay attention to them. TV wasn't usually her thing, anyway, unlike the rest of her teammates, who would never miss their favorite show. What they saw in Magnum, she didn't quite understand.

She came to a stop outside the clock tower and frowned. There was no one around that she could see. "Hello?" she called, eyes darting around for signs of movement. "Gambit? You around?" When she didn't hear a reply, she sighed and plunked herself down on the grass, nearer to the road than the building, and pulled out her journal to scrawl a quick note to the other mutant. She hoped he wouldn't keep her waiting long.

Dean had awakened to the silence with a start. Normally silence would have been comforting but after a dream full of memories regarding his experience at the hands of the people running this place and their best pet surgeon, he was less than comforted. When he reached out, Lexie wasn't there even though she'd been in his dream too. She'd whispered his name and smiled, touching his cheek and patting a belly that was -- well he wasn't going to think of that now that he was awake. Alone.

Getting up, he strapped himself into his boots and went looking of Lexie. She must've gone to the pharmacy for something. That was the only explanation he could think of. Not that he was all there. He was sort of numb still from everything. Waiting to wake up from the dream that the majority of his mind knew was actual reality.

When he heard the female voice calling out for Gambit, Dean paused. He wasn't sure if he should keep walking or answer. He hadn't seen any screens on his way from the gym down toward the clock tower in his southerly way toward the pharmacy. He had no idea what was happening other than the sun was up and Lexie was gone. All the same, if it was someone who was new and needed help, he should respond so --

"You okay?" he called to the voice, rounding a corner and sighting an unknown blonde in the grass. "New?"

Illyana had just settled down properly to wait, legs crossed like a grade-schooler, when she heard a male voice call out. The man came into view a moment later. Didn't sound remotely French, so she figured it probably wasn't Gambit. She hauled herself to her feet, regarding the man warily. Not that she couldn't summon a stepping disc from a sitting position, but her training wouldn't let her just sit there as a stranger approached.

"I'm fine," she said, brushing the dirt off her jeans. "Just waiting for someone." She shrugged. "I was new yesterday." She offered a polite smile. "But thanks for asking."

Rahne would kick her for being rude. That thought, while bringing a slightly warmer smile to her face, prompted Illyana to offer her hand to the man. "Illyana Rasputin. And you are?"

Dean nodded as he came to stop in front of her. "Good to hear," he sad to her "I'm fine."

"You were looking for Gambit?" He wanted to roll his eyes at that but only continued to smile. "He's probably lurking somewhere around the barn." Or scavenging for some kind of cake, he thought.

Seeing someone new sort of made his shoulders want to slump forward but he kept his expression pleasant. She hadn't asked to be here and he knew they would work hard to break her spirit. It was a distasteful thought.

He flashed her a smile and shook her hand firmly. "Dean Winchester. Enjoying your stay so far?" he asked and chuckled mirthlessly at himself. It really was a joke, this whole thing. He'd already lost 15lbs since his arrival and he hadn't been much more than muscle before. Now he looked slightly gaunt and in bad need of a shave. He hoped she wouldn't think he was some grizzled unibomber suspect or something.

"He said meet him here this morning," Illyana said, folding her arms. She had a basic idea of where things were, but she didn't know exactly how to get places. If she wandered off, and he ended up here, that wouldn't be good. Better to wait.

Illyana smirked at his choice of wording. "Yeah, it's the best resort in the world," she said, her sarcastic laughter matching his own. "Swank accommodations, tranquil atmosphere, all the amenities anyone could want." He had a good handshake. Not strong enough to crush fingers. Nice and solid. "Seriously, this place is messed up," she continued. "Although so far I haven't met anyone completely nuts."

Dean could just imagine why Gambit would be meeting this pretty little blonde. He was sure there would be copious amounts of flirting and inappropriate behavior. He wondered if he should warn her but decided against it. What harm could the guy do? He wasn't exactly dangerous when he tried to get his groove on and she looked like she could handle herself. She might not have been strong and imposing but there was a look in her eye.

"No one here is completely nuts. No, I almost wonder if they pump tranquilizers into the air or something to keep us all copacetic." He was joking again though this time his laugh was a little more genuine. "Guess I should get out of the way and let you get back to waiting. Unless you wanted company until he gets here?"

Illyana smirked at Dean's joke. "Good word, copacetic. I have...had...a friend who used to use words like that a lot." Her face fell as she thought of Doug. She shook her head. There was enough here to deal with that she didn't need to dredge up the recent past for more misery.

At the offer of company, Illyana smiled. "I don't mind company," she said, shrugging. She plopped back down on the grass, confident that Dean wasn't going to try and attack her. She'd known him all of three minutes, which shouldn't be enough time to tell a thing like that, but he seemed nice enough. "Pull up a chair, if you're staying."

Dean shot her rakish grin when she complimented him on his choice of words. "I know lots of big words. I are smart," he said, though he wasn't quite sure why other than her expression had suddenly taken such a sudden dive that he felt the need to cheer her up. He could do that, right? He could be useful to someone in spite of how he was feeling. Which was entirely impotent.

"Don't mind if I do," he said with a smile. Slowly, as though he were achey and without the any of the grace Gambit would have possessed had he been here instead if standing her up, Dean lowered himself onto the grass beside her, restlessly picking at the green blades.

"So where are you from?" he asked lamely because he couldn't think of anything else to say right now. A frustration considering how easily he managed to talk with girls before this place had happened to him. He was losing his finesse and Dean was not happy about it.

Illyana giggled at his choice of words. She couldn't help it. The grammar was deliberately wrong. "That sounds like me when I first learned English," she chuckled. "My verbs were never right on the first try." Granted, she'd been, what, six? And even though knowledge of the language had been given to her by the Professor, she had still made the mistakes any six-year-old would make with language.

She smiled when Dean decided to sit next to her. She wasn't used to being alone, thanks to Kitty and the New Mutants. She always had someone around, sometimes whether she wanted them or not. "New York, most recently," she said when Dean asked where she was from. "Late 1980s, since I understand people here are from all over, time-wise. But I was born in Russia." There was nothing wrong with basic small talk in Illyana's mind. Dean needn't have worried. "You?" she asked, nudging him with her elbow.
