Dig Yourself, Laz'rus Dig Yourself Back In That Hole
Who: L Lawliet and OPEN
What: L's new shovel is too sore a temptation for the restless detective. He's had it in his head for a while that he wants to see if it's possible to tunnel under the glass wall, and this seems like as good an opportunity as any to test it out.
Where: The side of the glass wall nearest to the deep part of the forest.
When: Day 16, around 9:00 A.M.
Rating: PG for now
Status: Active.

L had been thinking about this for a long time. He'd been in Vas Captio for long enough that it was starting to feel like the closest thing to home he had ever known, but the free man in him still bristled at being caged like an animal and toyed with at the whim of unseen entities. After the events of this morning, finding his own "gift" and seeing and reading about others, well... he felt ready to take a stand. To do something to spring himself from this sadistic world.

He didn't want to be in the liquor store, with not enough alcohol and Laura's picture of Robbie and Shadow. So it made sense, to come out here to the woods and the wall with a brand new, sturdy shovel that simply begged to be tested. L was tempted to simply hit the surface of the glass with the blade, at an angle so that it was more likely to shatter, but he was well aware that such an act would be futile. If others had not succeeded here, he would only be foolish. Setting the tip of the spade against the soft earth, he stepped on it, feeling the soil give way easily.

So far, so good. He wondered how long his stand would last.

The surgeon had spent his night prior nearly unable to sleep. Every single time he closed his eyes he swore he could feel that hard metal table beneath his skin. He swore he could smell the blood as it coated the floor and hear it as it ran down the drain. It made his stomach turn and when his stomach turned he'd swear it felt loose.

So, he did the only thing he could do, he went for a walk. When he was upright there was no way he was still on the table. When he was on his feet, he was sure there wasn't slices running up his soles. Arms at his side and head held high, Bones was going for a nice, long walk.

He'd walked a long way. So long that he was far from the gas station where he'd started when he swore he saw some movement off in the distance. Continuing forwarrd he canted his head, actually seeing the damned glass wall for the first time. "Holy mother of God," he breathed.

Taking a few steps closer he regarded the man with the shovel. "You think that'll work?" He asked quietly.

L was almost waist-deep when he heard a voice. Turning to face the man, he realized that he didn't recognize him. He must have been new... carefully, L leaned his shovel against a nearby tree, not wanting to draw any more attention to the wall than was possible in case there were shock detectors near it.

"Work?" L asked, as if in a dream. "Honestly, I don't know what to think anymore. This shovel here... it was a gift. For me. I found it this morning, and what better task could I use it for? I'll be honest. I want out of here. I'm tired of being surrounded by death... I'm tired of being left... I'm going to get out and take one person with me. It'll be nice... even if it doesn't work, even if I'm stopped or this is impossible, I haven't felt this motivated for a long time, so... please allow me my pleasure before my inevitable disillusionment..." he continued to dig tirelessly.

"I haven't seen you around before. My name is L."

"Right." Bones replied, sauntering closer to the hole for a look. While the Asian man said it was a gift the doctor canted his head a little. Did everyone get a little something? Becaue while Jim's captain's chair had been humorous, the broken tri-corder had been frustrating and apparently this shovel was practical.

Then the Asian man kept talking. It was like he was expecting Bones to try and talk him out of it. He blinked, hard.

"Right," he said, taking a seat against a nearby tree. "Well, if you don't mind, I'm going to take a bit of a break right here," he said with a smile. "Besides, if you manage to hurt yourself, at least you'll have a doctor at your disposal."

Leaning back he bent his knees, stretching out against the tree. "I'm Leonard McCoy," he said with a smile and nod. A nice Southern Gentleman, he couldn't help but enjoy the heat and the dryness.

Not all gifts were wanted, and not all things wanted were needed. The words sang through L's mind as his sinewy muscles tore and stretched with the manual labor his smooth hands were so unused to. Maybe L did expect the doctor to try and talk him out of it. It was foolish, after all, and dangerous, and risky and if he was caught or succeeded something terrible could happen... but if he did succeed, without getting caught, something wonderful could happen. They could be free.

"Leonard McCoy?" he asked, moving a shovel full of dirt over his shoulder to deposit it neatly at the edge of his hole. "A doctor... from down south, judging by your accent... feel free to take a break. You're new here, aren't you?" though L made pleasant conversation with Bones, his attention and eyes were on his self-appointed task.

He tugged down his uniform shirt and started to right his boots, too. There weren't any laces or anything on that high topped leather footwear; sometimes it just needed a little tug up, was all, especially when you had your boots as long as McCoy had.

The man went back to digging and McCoy just watched. "That's right," he said with a pleasant enough smile. He might have offered to help if he didn't get the distinct impression that the much more petite man was sort of enjoying the work he was doing. "Careful you don't over do it there, Chief. This is heat stroke weather."

"Heat stroke weather?" L asked thoughtfully. He paused, but continued to dig. "I think a heat stroke is the least of anyone's worries, here, Leonard McCoy. I'm not sure how many doctors we have left, the turnover rate here is so high..." he shook his head. "I had one of these stuck in my side, once. There was an earthquake, and I fell on a shovel... a doctor named House took it out of me. While I was certainly grateful to him for helping me not die, I think I've probably seen enough of doctors for a long while."

He continued to dig, completely unaware that he was actually speaking to a doctor.

"Can't say I met him yet," the physician drawled, taking up a stick and digging it unattentively into the dirt beside him. "I'm surprised you'd want anything to do with shovels then," he said offhandedly, more digging with his stick.

"Well, with any luck I guess you'll hit the bottom of the glass before you hit the water table..." Bones looked up with a grin playing across his features. "You ever been to Mississippi?"

"I haven't seen him around lately. Perhaps you will, and perhaps he's dead," L replied bluntly, digging his shovel into the earth with a slightly more violent jab. "Everyone keeps dying, or leaving... and others keep appearing. It's nasty business, I'm so tired of seeing new faces." he glanced at the relatively new Bones. "No offense intended, of course... I'm just not the type to adjust well to change." he certainly looked like this was the case; haggard and somewhat peaky looking, he almost seemed to want a heat stroke.

"It's odd. This shovel was a gift from the people in charge of this place after that incident... it's actually somewhat useful, as you see," he said, taking a moment to grasp the shovel by the shaft and tap the tip against the ground without breaking the surface. The image it cut was of a much more confident young man than L usually appeared. "Not only that... it reminds me of what I can survive. Of what I will survive. I am going to last as long as this place does. I am going to see the experiment end." He set his jaw, continuing to dig. "I was there once. I like the sound of insects at night."
