The night before had been... well... fantastic may be a decided understatement. After spending time with Rose in the early part of the evening, Jack had taken the newly-found greatcoat and returned it to its proper owner with the promise that he'd wear this one tomorrow. After that, there hadn't been much by way of talking. Even if the stopwatch ran a few seconds fast, Jack was determined to find a few new uses for it.

And there was one promise Jack had made Ianto when he had first arrived here -- a promise Jack had finally made good on. For all of about ten minutes, Jack might have felt bad Ianto's screams rang out in the museum. But, to be quite honest, they both needed this bit of release... literally and figuratively. Content and sated, Jack curled up with Ianto in his arms, closing his eyes to catch at least a few hours of sleep. The events of the past few days were really starting to take a toll on him and the bit of sleep would do some good.

That is, until the morning came. Hearing "EXTERMINATE" was not what Jack wanted to hear first thing in the morning. Eyes wide, he sat up in the makeshift bed (forgetting that Ianto was tangled up with him) and started looking for it.

"No. Not you. Not here."

The night before had been ... well. It had been lovely. Most of yesterday was alright, if he ignored the goings on about the place. A giant meal with coffee, two greatcoats and Jack. Screaming like that left him absolutely mortified, but it didn't last long, in the face of Jack's smug and too pleased grin. And, really, after a release like that, Ianto actually slept well, tangled up with Jack like a couple of puppies.

Until Jack sat up and something grated against his consciousness. Ianto grunted and opened his eyes to see what the commotion was about and came face to face with Jack.

Jack's head.

In a jar.

"NO!" he screamed and lunged for the jar, slammed into wakefulness by the awful sight. "Nononono!" Tears pricked at his eyes while hands ghosted over the jar, to see if it was real. Felt real, at least.

Jack had enjoyed the night before immensely. He was sore in all the right places and had hoped to bask in that afterglow even until the morning. What he hadn't expected was the sound of Daleks ringing out to awaken him. God, if they were here, they were all dead. At least there were two Doctors here -- but without any of their usual tools, they all were dead.

Then he heard Ianto. Heart in his throat and expecting to see them rolling through the door, Jack turned quickly to look at his lover. There were no Daleks moving in but rather Ianto clutching a jar. Jack rested a hand on Ianto's shoulder, cautiously peeking over it.

"Ianto..." Then he saw it: his own head in a jar. Well, that was slightly disconcerting. "Ianto."

Ianto didn't hear the Daleks at first and barely heard Jack, he was so lost in his sudden horror at the jar in his hands. But when a hand touched his shoulder, he startled and turned his head, and then was setting the jar down to push into Jack's embrace. And to touch at his head and neck. To make sure they were securely joined.

"Oh, god, oh, fuck I thought.. You're still in one piece." He was babbling, he knew, but the relief in him was so strong he couldn't help it. It bubbled out in a flood of words.

Between seeing his own head floating and staring at him, coupled with the sound of "Exterminate", Jack was in a bit of a state. Even as Ianto pushed his way into his arms, Jack still had one eye on the head in a jar. No, it didn't nod as if it understood what he was feeling, did it?

That would be just plain weird.

"Still in one piece," Jack said, reaching for Ianto's hand and running his fingertips from side to side across his neck. "Not headless and not tasting pickle juice." Jack's gaze flicked towards the door again. "However, I'm not so sure where the sound is coming from."

No cuts on Jack's neck. Nothing. Ianto's searching fingers slowed on Jack's neck, but they didn't pull away. It was as if Ianto needed to feel Jack to believe he was alright. The pulse under his fingertips did wonders for him. "Scared the ever loving shit out of me," he breathed and turned his head to peer at the jar.

He turned back when he swore it winked at him.

"..But .. where is the .. Dalek noise coming from?" No speakers, no Daleks to be seen, but the sound of them coming for humanity was clearly there. Ianto glanced up, to see if speakers had been installed or something.

There were no cuts, not even from shaving. As Jack stared at his head (and the head stared back), he wondered if he had been drugged and his head cut off at some point in the night. It wasn't like Jack ever would have known -- not with the way his skin healed and it also wouldn't have been the first time he regrew body parts either. "I'm here," Jack replied, pressing a kiss to Ianto's forehead. "All in one piece," he repeated for a second time.

Yes, the head winked at them both and Jack couldn't suppress the full-body shudder that wracked him from head to toe. Now the thing was just creeping him out. And, really, the answering nod wasn't necessary.

"No idea. It started up when I woke you," Jack replied, arms still holding Ianto protectively against his bare chest. "But it's not stopping yet. Sounds like it's coming from in here but I can't see them either."

At least he wasn't imagining the wink. That was just .. disturbing and disgusting. In numerous ways. Ianto, unwilling to let go of Jack, glanced round in corners, trying to regulate his breathing and reminding himself that Daleks couldn't be here because, well, they'd be dead already. Not much of a comfort, that.

"I .. don't know. D'you see anything out of the ordinary?" Aside from the head in a jar. Ianto shuddered again and flung an arm back to twitch a blanket over it. They'd have to bury it later. Or something.
