Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!complete, day 15, location: barn, remy lebeau, rose tyler, the doctor (nine), the doctor (ten)

Who: The Doctors [Nine & Ten], Rose Tyler & Remy LeBeau
What: Ten comes to the barn and finds Nine, Rose and Remy.
Where: The Barn
When: Day 15, 3:00 p.m.
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete

Remy had returned from his little get-together with the Doctor-- His Doctor-- The.. tenth Doctor?-- about twenty minutes ago. He'd had some errands to run, swinging by the thrift store again and allowing Rose what he thought was more time to sleep. However, when he'd come back, he'd found a big-eared man and had immediately known, through Le Docteur's description, that this had to be L'Autre Docteur. With greetings out of the way, Remy had shoved one of the couches (that wasn't part of his huge bed) away from one of the opposite walls, and had pushed it to sit about three feet from the one couch that was helping hold his bed together. It made for a nice sitting place, with the Cajun on one couch, and L'Autre Docteur and Rose, on the other one. The red-head (though you couldn't tell, with all of his hair hidden beneath the black beanie) had been closely watching their interactions, but hadn't seen anything to indicate that Le Docteur was lying to him. These two seemed like they were very close friends. Amazing friends, really. But he hadn't seen anything particularly romantic. No signals. No kissing. No hand-holding. And the thought made him smile to himself.

You'd be stupid and paranoid, Cajun. The Doctor wouldn't have lied to you. Best friends, he'd said. He and Rose were best friends, that was all.

"So you been trav'lin' 'roun' space wit' 'dis guy?" Remy was prompting to Rose, a grin clear on his features. "In uh telephone box? Savin' worl's an' gettin' int' lor' know wha' kin'a trouble?" He laughed a little and shook his head. "Seem like my kin'a t'in'. You takin' applica'ions, Doct'r?" He had been amazed how easy it had been to fall into calling this man 'Doctor'. He'd never call him Docteur, though. L'Autre Docteur, sure. But there was only one Docteur for him.

"No, no applications." The Doctor replied with a smile, then looked aside at his blonde companion, sitting next to him there on the couch. He stared a few seconds longer than he should have, just thinking. Thinking about what had happened in the TARDIS, how she'd come back for him. Thinking about himself, well.. his future self. How he'd reacted in the journals. He hadn't heard the tone of his own voice, of course.. but he'd know the tone of the writing. He'd known that reaction. And, he knew that a little further down the line, Rose wasn't with him anymore. He'd met himself, in that funny-haired, rambling version, a few years back. Several years back. and he hadn't had Rose at his side. Spoilers.

He tried his best not to think on it, but for a Time Lord (especially a Time Lord as smart as this one) it was like asking him not to feel. It was impossible. "I only take the best." He repeated something he'd said months ago, before blue eyes came back to study the younger man across from him. Now he was left to wonder exactly who this stranger was. And where he'd gotten those eyes. He was human, he looked human, smelled human, acted human. Not even humanish, really. Not a new human or a proto human. But a human. Except something else was off, and he couldn't put his finger on it. But he knew he didn't belong here.

Rose couldn't remember being happier. Oh, sure, she'd been kidnapped to a place where apparently every morsel was a fight for survival and God help you if you wanted something like a real life. But she'd met a friend, a very nice one. And then there was her Doctor. Okay, maybe she'd be happier if she'd met Gambit in London and was sitting around her mum's living room with the pair instead of an old, mildewy barn, but fair enough, she'd take what she could get.

"Don't mind him, he likes to insult others. Makes him feel smarter," she told Gambit, but there wasn't even a hint of malice to her tone. Instead, Rose was beaming up at her companion, her eyes bright as she studied him. He seemed strained somehow, but then considering their current situation, who could blame him? "Gambit could be the best, you don't know! And then what'll you do? Dump me for him?" The tip of her tongue poked through her teeth as she grinned teasingly at the two of them.

"Only 'de bes'?" It was like a compliment to the red-head, who broke into a wide smile then began laughing, shaking his head some at his own personal amusement, crossing his arms over his chest to keep the warmth in. Much too cold. Much, much too cold. But if the Doctor only took the best, only worked with the best, only.. well. Then that certainly made Gambit the best, didn't it! He couldn't stop the smile on his face, even as Rose announced that he shouldn't mind the other Doctor's insults.

"Non, no' 'de bes'." He assured with another short laugh, shaking his head and huddling his arms nearer to his body. "Bu' I ain' half ba', an' maybe you change your min' some day, Doctor." He knew he would, eventually because he did, when he was the younger version of himself.. or was it the older? The later but younger. Sure. That worked.

"You see? Not the best. You're the best." The Doctor leaned back into the smelly couch and redirected his eyes back onto Gambit. The other man-- Cajun, he would guess. Somewhere.. in the twentieth or twenty-first century. The accent fit those times-- was tall, thin. Definitely built muscularly under those clothes. He was graceful, something easy to tell. But the most important observation The Doctor made about the brash young man on the couch opposite him? He was wearing Ten's trench coat.

He had been warned, of course, that this man would be wearing the brown wool creation, but he hadn't expected to have this reaction when he saw it on that thin body. The only person he'd ever let wear his leather jacket was the girl sitting next to him. Of course, Ten had also told him that it was a duplicate coat and that it wasn't really his. All the same, something seemed to be strange about it. The way the man smiled. There was just something about him.

Despite her defense of Remy, Rose beamed at the Doctor's praise. There were times she felt like merely a school girl around him, clinging on to every ounce of compliments and learning. For a girl who'd never even gotten her A-levels, she figured she was doing fairly well in the ways of learning. She bet those geniuses back in secondary hadn't seen the planet of Krackz. She had. She was pretty sure that meant she won.

"Takes a lot for him to take in a newbie," she informed Remy, giggling despite herself. "Should've seen it when I picked up this bloke, Adam. The guy was a total prat in the end, only after his own interests. Totally ended up with a hole in his head with a projector in it. Git. Yeah, since then, we're pretty picky about who comes with us." If they ever got the opportunity to do so again. She missed the TARDIS. Even if it didn't work, she'd sat in it, thinking for hours after she'd landed back in London. After she'd been smothered by her mum, she'd gone out and sat in it again, desperate to think of how to get back.

But this? It would do. For the moment.

The blue suited man in his long brown coat and spikey brown hair had to literally force himself back to the barn. He knew they'd be there. Remy had told him that she was there. It hadn't been all that long since Remy'd left the Carnival. It had given him enough time to rally the troops and make sure they all had their marching orders. It was clear, very clear; Rose Tyler was not to know who he was. Those closest to him: Jack, Sarah Jane, Shannon, Gambit; he'd trust them to guard his secret. It was for everyone's good.

Sliding in through the door he spied Nine and Rose on the couch, Gambit in his coat not too far away. Making mental note that he'd have to kindly have Gambit return Jack's duplicate coat, certain it would do wonders for Jack's level of trust in the mutant. Currently, the Doctor was swallowing his hearts back down from his throat. Last time he'd seen Rose Tyler had been at Bad Wolf bay; and even then he couldn't touch her. Even then he couldn't tell her the words that were forming in the back of his mind even then.

He had to remind himself: this wasn't his Rose. This was Nine's Rose. This was someone else entirely who just looked like her. Swallow hard, Doctor.

"Hello," he said with a wave and a smile that lit the room up before shoving his hands back deep into his pockets. "Everything settled, then?" Yes, Rose Tyler, he wanted you out of here right now.

"Oui," Gambit announced smoothly. Oh, Doctor, you should have let the mutant in on your little problem, because he was about to unknowingly make it much, much worse. He thought it'd help, getting to see your best friend again, even if you couldn't admit who you were. It'd be good to see her, to know she was doing well and was happy, right? Right. So, the red-head was standing in a fluid motion, the Doctor's duplicate coat swinging some as he did, and he gestured out with one cold hand, before stuffing it back into his pocket (it was too cold for that!). "Rose, Doct'r, 'dis is Docteur John Smit'. He's de guy I was tellin' you 'bou', Rose." He assured her with a brilliant smile, bordering on proud, really.

Okay, so it wasn't bordering, it had lept over the border and gone running about in circles, screaming.

But still. It was a brilliant smile.

When Ten came in, Nine knew it immediately, and he lifted his head to look over, making eye-contact before the other him even made his presence known. But the sound of his feet on the wood had gotten that mutants attention, bringing a sudden smile to his face. And that drew Nine's attention back to the man across from them. The smile on his face was.. different, somehow. A little off, just like the rest of the red-eyed man. There was something there, but he couldn't put his finger on it, not yet. He was so thick today. But then again, there was a lot to take in.

And when Remy lept to his feet, the Doctor smiled and looked over at Rose briefly, before standing as well and nodding at his older self. He had known the cue to leave, even if his future companion (for that was what he assumed this man was) didn't know it. There was no reason to stress himself out further over Rose. He knew, after all, what he must be feeling. He'd known where his own emotions were leading him, and after a regeneration.. well. "Like he said, I'm The Doctor. Hello." He lifted a hand with a smile. But he'd let Rose introduce herself, all very normal, natural.. before he dragged her out of here.

Christ, was it possible everyone in this crazy place was that good-looking? First Remy, with those unique eyes and otherwise gorgeous features. And now...him. Dr. John Smith. What a blah and boring name. Dr. John Smith who Remy called 'the doctor' in her presence, getting her hopes up even if it turned out that her own really was there. Dr. John Smith who was...well, she couldn't exactly deny that he was incredibly fit, could she? A little thin, but so was Remy, honestly. Great hair...really great hair. And lovely eyes. Shame he seemed less than personable.

Swallowing down the blush that she knew was probably creeping up into her cheeks, Rose smiled as brightly as she could manage. "I've heard a lot about you," she offered, getting to her own feet and reaching out a hand to shake. Politeness counted. "Sure are a lot of doctors here," she added with a giggle. "The bloke I met this morning was, too. I feel like a totally uneducated schlump around here."

Oh, Rose, if only you knew exactly how many 'Doctors' were there.

Nine nodded to Ten and nodded to Gambit. Gambit who was beaming and jumping around like a puppy in a shop. "Doctor," He paused a moment. Ought he have the same reaction he knew everyone else always had? Sure, why not. He wasn't supposed to be anything less than ordinary, wasn't he? "Anything to follow after that 'doctor' bit?" His hands were shoved deep down into his own pockets, an unrelenting player in this game. He might have been forced into it, but he didn't have to like it.

"All lies," he said to Rose, "Every bit of it." His smile had turned a bit charmed. He couldn't help it. It was Rose. Not quite his Rose, but close. He still knew her, and she didn't disappoint. He'd fight with himself in that moment, to take her hand and when he did his poker face slipped a little and it was all he could do to look at the floor, pulling his hand away before too long and stepping backward.

"Oh, I'm sure you're brilliant," and he was sure. There was nothing patronizing in that tone, just an honest to goodness Doctor compliment, meant just for her. He looked away, tapping his toes on the floor, feeling like a kid who just couldn't keep still, not for one moment.

"Right."

That second. That instant. That smile. The way he took her hand. The way he looked down. The way he pulled back like he was escaping a hot stove. That tone.. The mutant let out the smallest breath, recognition dawning on his face, but only a second, before he smiled brightly again and turned once more to face Rose, having recognized the look on her face as well, but it wasn't the same as his. Not in the slightest. Still, he'd call her out on it.

"Lo'sa ho' men here, non? We go' me, an' 'de Doct'r," He made a vague gesture to 'Dr. Smith', whom he had already forgotten was supposed to be 'Dr. Smith', but really, it wouldn't matter. He'd called him 'The Doctor' in Rose's presence before, and she knew the term meant this man, instead of the man at her side in that leather jacket. "Where you two plannin' on stayin' t'nigh?" He prompted easily, and with a smile. He was actually feeling a little anxious to get them away now, to send them where they were going. He'd have a long talk with Rose later.. he was going to want to know everything about that earlier version of the Doctor.

Everything.

When he prompted himself for more of a title, he couldn't wipe that goofy grin off his face. It was just so amusing to him, somehow. And perhaps if Ten hadn't been in the position he was, it would have been more amusing for him, as well. "No, just 'The Doctor'. That's me. Hello." He waved again, as if for emphasis, watching the short interaction between Rose and his later self as he did. He was focused on his own face at first, until he noticed the red-eyed man just past him, and the expression that settled there. Wait.. was that.. he watched as Remy's expressions changed from wonder, to a bit of curiosity, to uncertainty, and into a touch of shock, and straight into recognition. Very quickly, all just tiny, subtle movements of the face, but Time Lord eyes caught everything.

Then those blues were moving to himself, as he interacted with Rose. Recognition had settled onto his own face, as well. But just as quickly as Ten had wiped his own emotions out, and replaced them with false ones.. just as soon as the Cajun had plastered that smile on.. he flashed a brilliant smile as well. Three fakers, all here to keep Rose Tyler unawares and happy. And safe.

"I think we'll be heading off to the museum, we have a friend there, apparently." Friend. Really, was Jack a friend? He supposed so. Perhaps even a great one, if looked at from another angle.

"A very good one," Rose added, her smile wide. "But Remy knows about him." Reaching out, she gave the tall, thin man's arm a squeeze. "You've been so good to me, I honestly don't know what I'd have done if you hadn't stumbled along." Probably worked to blend in with the local colour, as it happened, but fair enough. This was better.

As she made another peek at her new journal, she felt a strange lump in her throat. "And, apparently, I have an extra invite there anyway," she added with a crooked smile. "Some girl named Shannon. Apparently, Jack's mentioned me? What are you people doing in these books, blathering on? I just got here!" She couldn't help laughing, though, and instinctively, she leaned on the Doctor's leather-covered arm. "Telling her I'm not coming unless I can drag you along. Wouldn't be right! You certainly let me bunk with you long enough."

Her eyes again traced the newcomer. He seemed friendly enough, but almost as if he were afraid to come too close. "What is it you're a doctor of, anyway?" she questioned. The question itself was posed to her companion enough, she may as well return Earth's favour and continue the trend.

He wanted to slink away, very quietly and very non-decriptly. So, he gave Nine a look. A blank face that to Remy and Rose would probably look like nothing more than acknowlegement. To Nine, however, it would speak volumes. It would scream, Get her out of here. Mostly because this was bordering on tortuous.

"Shannon's good. Jack, too," he vouched. "They'll both keep an eye out for the pair of you, I'm sure," He stepped back again, this time taking up a spot to lean against one of the many wooden pillars that served to support the rafters and roof. He crossed his arms and tried to force a bit of a smile.

When Rose asked her question he was quick to respond, "Science." You're down to single word answers, Rose. Sorry.

Oh, the Doctor knew that look on himself and smiled in return, so as not to give the other two the wrong impression. It was definitely time to go and he was tugging out that journal again to flip through the pages and find the map again, then lifted blue eyes back up to his other self. "Then we'll be at the museum. I'd like to hear more about your science later, Doctor." Nine reminded Ten simply, with a glance that said much more. They needed to find time alone, to talk. They had a lot to talk about and doing it over the journals wasn't going to solve anything.

"Well, we're off." Abrupt Doctor is Abrupt. But he always had been and always would be, by the looks of things. "Thank you, Remy," He extended his hand out towards the Cajun for a shake, and once he got it, he was only smiling at the Doctor, having no real urge to try touching himself.

No, definitely not. "It was good to meet you, Doctor. Rose?" He offered out his arm to her in a pleased gesture, quite aware that even if she was fixated on Ten, that she'd give it up for the chance to wrap her arms around that leather-clad one the older man was offering out.

"Oui, see you la'er, Rose, Doct'r." He nodded to the pair of them, pushing his hands deep into the pockets of the duplicate trench coat and smiling easily. He had questions. Tons of questions. But he would wait, at least, until the pair was long gone. Probably later into the night, even. He wanted to watch a little longer, try to figure things out, piece it together on his own.

For now.

Rose couldn't help feeling like she'd done something wrong. Perhaps it was simply that the Doctor was right and they'd invaded on this space for too long. But it felt so much deeper, as if she'd spoken out of turn at a fancy dinner party or something.

"It was nice meeting you both," she forced out, clinging to the offered arm as if it were a life raft. Suddenly, she felt more than a little ill and desperate to get back out to the cool but fresh air of her captive home. She hadn't spoken that much. How could she have offended everyone in the room? But she hadn't, had she?

Christ, boys were strange. No matter how old or even what species, she didn't think she'd ever understand them. "Thank you again, Remy," she offered to the one bloke in the room who wasn't entirely freaking her out. "We'll talk again, I know it." She wiggled her fingers at him with her free hand, and then paused her eyes on the taller man, the one in the trench that matched Remy's so completely. For a moment, she hesitated. She was drawn to him, she knew that much, but she couldn't place why and she couldn't figure out why her presence offended him so much. So instead of speaking at all, she merely gave the Doctor's arm a slight tug and nodded at the man as they made their way outside.
