Day 15: 2:30 PM, Carnival

Who: The Tenth Doctor and OTA (especially those in his note)
What: A meeting
Where: The Carnival, right beneath the ferris wheel
When: Day 15, 2:30 PM
Rating: PG

Status: Active

The Doctor had already met with Gambit and made it completely and totally clear: No one was to tell Rose Tyler who he was. No one. The things it could do to the fabric of time? If she knew what he looked like before she should? If she knew him before she should? There was a very definite reaction that she'd had when he'd regenerated; and it was a look he intended to preserve. It was important that she have that reaction. That she know that she had to do so much of everything during that Christmas Invasion on her own. That she not have any spoilers: For a time there she thought he might die - and for all she knew he might.

Besides, knowing he was here without her, well, it would only lead to more questions. What had happened to her? Where had she gone? Why had he left her? Who was Donna? Who was Martha Jones? Who was Sarah Jane? What's this whole Torchwood thing? There were so many questions, so very many questions. So much that she just couldn't know, couldn't know at all. The Doctor had ihs work, and the work of his friends cut out for them.

Taking up a seat on the rocky car of the ferris wheel, the Doctor tapped his toes, waiting. They'd all need to know to know that he couldn't just be 'The Doctor' anymore. In enters Doctor John Smith. That's right, folks, in the flesh for as long as he had to be. Rose wouldn't be getting close enough to notice those double hearts in his chest; and she certainly wouldn't be hearing from him about their time in the TARDIS. Rubbing his brow the Doctor came to realize: this would be liike living with a ghost. Oi.

Sarah Jane hadn't been looking at her journal when the Doctor had posted the note. So, she ended up running a bit late for this impromptu gathering. She jogged from the gas station, where she'd been grabbing a few granola bars, back to the carnival, but pulled up short to a fast walk as she saw the little group, faces serious.

Something was going on. There'd be time for happy reunions after business was concluded. For now, it was game time. "Sorry," she said, stepping up to the group. "Been an odd day." She smiled at Shannon, who was the only one present to know exactly how odd. She'd fill the others in later.

The Doctor took a deep intake of breath, he was about to respond to everything when he'd heard the breathy voice of one Sarah Jane Smith coming up beside him. "Sarah Jane!" He was always so excited to see her, even in times like this. "Short story," he said to her, "Previous regeneration is here, you never met him; and Rose Tyler." No grin there, no telling smile. He was going to lock all that up tight. He had to.

"Odd day?" He canted his head. He'd have to ask her more about that later.

"Right; so, Rose Tyler from the past. She's from before Canary Wharf," he said this pointedly to Ianto. Thinking of Canary Wharf made his stomach literally flop. Bloody Torchwood. Thanks for the reminder. Two steps backward on the path to mutal understanding, Mr. Jones.

"She's from the Journal," he replied to Shannon with a quick nod. Same girl he'd told her about that evening in the museum, too.

Finally, the Doctor looked to Jack as if he'd been neglecting him with a shake of his head, looking to his feet.

"Paradoxes and changes in timelines. You need her there at Canary Wharf. Desperately. Nothing here can change that - and her knowing who I am? It could." It was a big giant box of possibilities, the tiniest of changes that could make it all turn out so terribly different. Hadn't the Doctor just learned this lesson with Donna's journey into that parallel world with the trickster? Of course he had. There would be no right hand turns instead of left one's on the Doctor's watch.

"Right. Doctor John Smith. Spread the word. Tell people I've finally cracked and started giving out my name. Whatever must be done."

Shannon looked up at the sound of Sarah Jane's voice and smiled. That solved that problem, at least. The smile fell away as Sarah Jane mentioned she'd had an odd day. That was to say the very least; poor woman.

When the Doctor started to speak again, suddenly it became very apparent to Shannon that she was the oddball out. Why she'd been invited to the meeting was suddenly lost on her. They all seemed to know what he was talking about - or at least the Doctor was confident they would, since he didn't seem to elaborate at all - and, to top it off, Shannon was the only one who didn't know any of the others in the real world. It was a little like feeling alone in a crowded room, she thought. With that, she closed her eyes slightly, trying to keep from letting it get to her too much.

Opening her eyes again, Shannon's brow furrowed. "Uh...stupid question, I'm sure," she prefaced awkwardly, frowning. "What or where or who is Canary Wharf...?" Whatever it was, that statement seemed to be directed more at Ianto than Jack or Sarah Jane and Shannon clearly had no effing clue whatsoever. The more the Doctor talked, the more confused and out of the loop Shannon felt. "Another dumb question: what's a paradox? Like...I mean, in context. How do you mean?" she asked sheepishly.

The Doctor said that he would be Doctor John Smith and that they needed to spread the word. Shannon would tell Sam and leave the rest up to the others. Her other friends were either dead, missing, or hadn't met him, as far as she knew. "Bad idea to do it on the journals rather than in person or...?" she prompted when Jenny popped into her mind as someone who probably ought to know about the sudden change.

Canary Wharf wasn't his fault! The Doctor couldn't honestly blame all of Torchwood for that tragedy, could he? Besides, it's not like that had been a picnic for Ianto, either. He turned his head slightly, to regard Shannon a bit better. Ianto's expression had closed off by then, so that he looked a little bored but nothing else.

"Canary Wharf was a monumental mistake. Two alien species ended up fighting in a skyscraper at Canary Wharf because of what had happened there. Over eight hundred people in that tower alone died. There were only twenty seven survivors." He delivered it all as if it were a news report that had happened a world away and left out most of the details. No one wanted to hear them, anyway.

"Right. Doctor Smith. ...what're you going to do if you have to be ... brilliant around her?" All clever and time lordy.
