To All The Leaves That Fall In Vain, While God And Goddess Go Insane
Who: L and Laura
What: Laura comes home.
Where: The liquor store
When: Day 15, 10:00 A.M.
Rating: PG-13 for angst
Status: Active

L's hands shook as he set aside his journal.

He couldn't believe what he'd read. Laura had responded to him... she was coming home. Everything was going to be all right.

He hurried around, cleaning the liquor store as best he could, double-checking Laura's cooler. Though her cardigan was worse for wear, he folded it and set it on the counter, hoping that she'd wear it again. He adored using it as a pillow, but it no longer smelled like her.

"Hi, Rabbit," she finally murmured when she saw the recognition in her body. It was always the same with humans, wasn't it? They started moving in slow motion before they froze completely, and then they turned around like the barn was on fire and their eyes got wide. In him, though, she was glad to see it. Having to announce herself would have been embarrassing.

The fact that he was lost sealed the deal for her: it was her L. Had he been overly dramatic or overly distant it wouldn't have been right. There was a perfect balance of it all, a mix of knowledge and fear and apprehension and instinct, that always seemed to hover around him. Her dark eyes stared when he advanced on her, and she watched his every movement like a thirsty woman in the desert might watch the god of water dancing on the horizon. There was a strange reserve, a quiet longing, that seemed to announce that he was exactly what her eyes had needed to see to renew the will to go on inside of her.

"Time doesn't move the same for me," she said coolly. "I don't really know how long it's been. In some respects, too long, while in others it hasn't been long enough." She fell silent. It was a little too late before she realized how cold and dispassionate that had sounded. "I am sorry to have worried you, though. I told you that you never really needed to worry about me. I could find you blindfolded and dropped into the deepest part of the ocean. You didn't need me, and I'm no good for you, anyway, so I decided to leave. With me with you there was only bleak decline and disappearance. I couldn't consciously do that to you."

Sensing a bit of human still inside of herself, she closed the gap between them, looking up into his face, her eyes locking with his. A smirk touched at the corners of her lips. "But I decided to get you a present." Leaning closer, she pressed her icy lips to the left corner of his. "Me. My body's more okay than you have ever seen it." She tugged the shirt away from her right arm. Her shoulder was completely intact, not a staple to be seen. There were also no holes nor scars that shouldn't have been there in her body. "I'm here to stay...as long as you'll have me despite the fact that I know that you deserve better than me."

It was certainly her L. Hesitant, wary, and one hundred percent human. A thousand thoughts raced through his mind. Was she happy to be back? Was she here out of duty? Would she stay with him, now, or depart shortly? His body was incapable of lying. Dramatic gestures would have been unnatural to him, as well as being distant. Those were controlled things, and control was something L lacked when it came to very strong emotions. Usually, he could keep his cool, but when feelings became bigger than he was, it was sympathy-inspiring and actually a little bit beautiful.

He shuffled, trying very hard to hide his impatience when Laura said that she didn't perceive time as he did. Yes, yes, he knew this. Her apology tempered that, though, and his frustration with their differences melted. "I was worried that you had left," he admitted. "And the last time I saw you, I was, sincerely, worried about your well-being." he didn't have the heart to say that she'd looked terrible and turned his stomach.

However, she was right about the "present" bit. She looked very good. When they'd all been healed, she must not have been overlooked. Maybe Jenny, with her double identity, had ensured that, just for him. Jenny... L's heart skipped a beat as Laura kissed him, in that cold, teasing way. Was Jenny, to him, like Gambit was to Laura? "Please don't say that. I don't deserve..." he faltered. "Laura. What are we going to do? Neither of us can read minds, but... I feel isolated from you. Even if you can find me, will you?" he swallowed. "A lot has happened, since you've been gone... the Insider is gone."
