Day Two - Mid-afternoon
Who: Andy Gallagher and Luna Lovegood
What: Reuniting after their respective experiments
When: Mid-afternoon
Where: The church
Rating: TBA, probably G or PG
Status: Complete

By the time Andy had dragged his sorry self back up the road from the gym, his clothes were covered in mud and what would be drying blood if not for the rain. For all the times he'd had to stop and sit on the dirt road holding his hands over the leg wound and putting pressure there, he'd lost a lot of blood in the rain and a lot of it ended up on his clothes. He was tired and all he wanted to do was lay down and rest. Well, second to seeing for himself that Luna was all right. After he'd heard that she'd had an experiment as well, his panic and worry had gone off the scale.

He sat on the steps of the church for a few minutes, letting the rain wash out the wounds he'd refused to clean in the shower. Shit, if the water was going to be cold, anyway, what was the point of sticking around the gym and letting Martha potentially coddle him when all he wanted was to be back at the church and to see Luna again?

Finally, after what seemed like forever, he pulled himself to his feet and hobbled inside, closing the door behind him. His heart sank when he saw that Luna wasn't there. Heaving a sigh, too tired to change his clothes, he made his way to the front of the church and stood in front of the dying fire for a moment, striking another match and throwing it in to reignite it.

At every creak or sound, he looked hopefully over his shoulder for Luna, disappointed and even more worried with every passing sound that wasn't her. She had to come back soon, right? Sam had said she was all right, in the journals, and that he'd take care of her...all Andy could do now was trust that and wait.

The door creaked open eerily, like a hamster being strangled by a loan shark of a rabbit. With gray skies and pouring rain outside, it must have been quite creepy, even as a small blonde popped up in the doorway. Soaked nearly to the skin, but thankfully wearing a small boy's jean jacket over her clothes, Luna appeared like...well, like magic. Only minus any actual magic, sadly enough. Her wand would have been quite helpful in keeping her hair back and out of her face. As it was, she had used a small length of cord found in a pocket of the jacket to tie it back, which worked well enough.

Surprisingly cheerful for the situation, bandaged wrists and back and all, she skipped up the last step and into the mostly cold building. Luna never seemed to run unless there was something actively after her, otherwise her top speed was set on 'skip' mode.

Sam had met her at the gym, and walked her to the church steps, before saying he had to 'go do...something.' She had watched in amusement, because he had seemed somewhat flustered about whatever it had been, but just nodded when he said he would be back shortly. Not-Muggles were so strange at times, although she had to admit that she did not exactly understand either Muggles or Wizards all that well anyway. Oh well.

While Martha had explained that Andy would be fine, the witch had still been concerned about the possible condition he was in. Years ago she had seen far too much damage and injury to people she knew, and did not want her new friend who was actually nice to her to be among the number. "Afternoon Andy," she greeted, upon reaching where he stood. Just before she gingerly hugged him.

Upon hearing another set of squeaks and creaks, Andy willed himself to stare dejectedly at the fire. Whipping his head around at every sound was giving him a headache and he didn't think he could handle any more disappointment, anyhow.

Although, the creaking continued and drew closer, so finally, Andy turned. And there she was. His breath caught in his throat for a second, but she looked far better off than he was and he relaxed. Goddamn, he was glad to see her face again. Giving her a relieved smile as she greeted him, Andy licked his lips and dipped his head slightly. "Afternoon, Luna," he replied, looking up just in time for her to wrap him in a hug.

Closing his eyes and trying not to wince at the dull pain at her hair brushing against his injured ear or the tug of protesting muscles in his ribs, he hugged her back in earnest and moved one hand gingerly to the back of her head. "Jesus, I'm glad to see you," he breathed as he opened his eyes again. As much as he didn't want to let go, it hurt too much to hold on and so his hand slid away from her head and to her arm, pulling away and looking down at her, his eyes searching hers. "You're really okay?" he asked, unresolved worry still etched on his face.

After a pause, Andy leaned down and, chickening out at the last minute, pressed his lips to her cheek before covering his awkwardness by pulling her into another hug, ignoring the throbbing in his ribs. This one was shorter-lived and when he pulled away again, he held her arms gently in his hands and looked her in the eye. "I'm really sorry. I should've stayed awake. I should've let you sleep and made sure--" he cut himself off. What ifs would be sure to follow and those were a waste of time. What was done was done; he was just glad she was okay.

Frowning slightly when she saw the mess that he was, Luna looked at all the mostly dry mud and patches of blood. Still, despite the fact that she was newly clean, if pretty soaked, she did not bother worrying about her clothes when she had turned to hug him.

At his exclamation, she twisted around, to look back at the door. "Jesus?" Fully expecting to see someone behind her, but having spotted no one, her expression was one of complete confusion. "Did you suffer a head trauma?" Then she looked back at Andy, and caught sight of the odd man hanging on a crossed pair of sticks at the front of the church, suddenly remembering who it was supposed to be. "Oh! Jesus! Okay." Still, maybe he did hit his head, considering that figure had been there the entire time. Why was he pointing it out just now?

"Oh, I'm fine. The wolf just leapt over my head, it bit Sam." The bandages, as she explained, on her wrist poked out from the sleeves of her jacket.

The friendly kiss and hug, as she translated them, made her beam for a moment. Only for her smile to turn sharply into an unusually severe frown for a fraction of a second before disappearing entirely. She shook her head, her hair still dripping icy water down her back. "They would have taken us anyway," she reasoned. "Everything turned out just fine." With a glance down at his bloody pants, she pursed her lips for a second and then looked back up at his face. "You should sit down."

Smiling and shaking his head, Andy let out a small laugh in spite of himself. Leave it to Luna to take me painfully literally, he thought with amusement. "No, I mean I did hit my head," he replied, gesturing weakly at his ear with one hand, "but it's just an expression. I didn't literally mean I was glad to see Jesus. I'm glad to see you, Luna," he explained.

Andy nodded, taking another deep breath and holding it for a half-second before letting it out in a relieved sigh.

Luna's smile was contagious, although as was her frown. Andy's brow furrowed slightly as he looked back down at her. No. No they wouldn't have. Because this wasn't the Yellow-Eyed Man. Andy had to believe that. Tonight, he would just be more careful and stay awake until she woke up again. Then he'd take his turn sleeping and hope for the best. The decision was already firmly made in Andy's mind. He wouldn't let anything happen to Luna ever again on his watch. That was for damn sure.

"Huh? Oh, yeah..." he agreed dully, following her eyes down to his leg and then back up to her face. But, he couldn't make himself move from the spot. Andy licked his lips again and dragged his teeth over the bottom one, raising a hand to cup her jaw. Don't do it, man. She's liable to clock you one and you're already in bad shape, he told himself. Furrowing his brow, he dropped his hand away again. "Yeah, you're probably right," he said, finally tearing himself away to sit in the front pew closest to them, propping his leg up on it and raising a hand to his forehead with frustration.

Letting out a sigh, he dropped his hand into his lap and looked back at Luna. "What happened to your wrists?" he asked, although he figured it probably had something to do with the bindings. He probably had rope burn he hadn't even noticed on his arms. The pain from the knots pressing into him, among his other injuries trumped any pain he might've noticed otherwise from rope burn.

Her attention drawn to his ear, with his hand motion that helpfully indicated it, Luna moved to stand at his side and peer up at it. Due to her height, she had to stand on her toes to get a proper glance at it. With a sympathetic wince, the little blonde stretched out a hand as if to touch the metal cuff there, only pausing to trace the shape of where the rest of his ear should be in the air. For a moment she was fiercely reminded of the first time she had seen George after he had lost his ear, and was taken aback. Both then and now.

Something that quickly drifted to the bottom of consciousness, like a glowing stone dropped into a pond.

"I'm glad to see you too Andy."

Really she was not used to someone being concerned about her well being. At least in a capacity besides familial, or that of easy going acquaintanceship. Her closest friends, those that she would label as such at least, would probably still be Neville and Ginny. Sure, they did not see each other that often, sometimes not for weeks at a time, but they did care about the well being of the others. Yet, each had their own far different lives and day to day activities, and there now seemed more space than things filling their interactions.

Andy wanting to protect her would not occur to her, she was still just happy that he had said he would always be nice to her.

Confusion reigned like an angry tyrant in a too tight girdle, as Andy's hand went to the curve of her jaw, only to drop as his expression twisted slightly. Entirely misinterpreting the action, as he moved away, Luna blinked once in a flicker of hurt that was soon swept away. While she had not been sure what his point would have been, the fact that he had looked at her while looking so unhappy did not tell her that he was exactly content at the moment. With her, or the situation, she did not know.

Unconsciously wrapping herself in her own dreamy personality, Luna looked down at her wrists and then back up at Andy. "Oh, the ropes chafed me when I escaped them." The bandages were not quite what she was used to, but not particularly bad. "I have more around my middle," the witch added off-handedly.

Andy stood still when Luna moved, wincing slightly in anticipation of her touch when he saw her move her hand toward his ear in his periphery. When she didn't actually make contact, he relaxed. Knowing she wouldn't have hurt him was one thing; trusting that she realized it would've if she had actually touched him was another.

Though, he smiled slightly when she said she was glad to see him, too. That made him feel marginally less stupid for all the relief that had washed over him when he saw her face again for the first time and was able to see for himself that she was all right. Words on a page were nice, but not nearly as good as seeing.

He was frustrated with himself, though. Andy was attracted to Luna and he might've been trying to keep it to himself to keep her from being uncomfortable around him, but if asked, he'd own up to it. The problem was, he thought that maybe he was so attached to her just because they had a few important things in common and he'd met her first.

He wasn't entirely sure if his sudden urges to wrap her in his arms and never let go or the desire to kiss her was simply because he was in the situation he was in and she was just there. Besides, even if it was completely genuine - which part of him was confident it was - would she take it for what it was and appreciate it...or take it for what it was and be angry? Worse, would she completely misinterpret it as something friendly and nothing more? In all his brooding, it hadn't even occurred to him that his change in demeanor could've sent out a potentially mixed signal to her.

But then Luna was talking again and Andy was glad for the distraction from his thoughts. "Does it hurt bad?" he asked, wincing slightly for her. Part of him wanted an honest answer while the other part wanted her to placate him and tell him that it didn't hurt at all, even if he'd know she was lying.

"No," she spoke in complete honesty. Pain was all about comparatives. How did one pain compare to another, was it worse, was it better?

Shortly before her sixteenth birthday, until several months after it, Luna Lovegood had been in the care (read: clutches) of a Death Eater stronghold. Her family's pureblood status mostly protected her from the worse fates that many who had graced the Malfoy's dungeon cells had fallen to. Not completely, however. Whether it was that Lucius had determined her to be a good target for his son's Unforgivable practices.

Draco had been far too much of a coward to actually perform Crucio on a girl near his own age, at least more than a handful or so occasions. When his father had been supervising. Thankfully before he had grasped the true strength of the spells. In truth, however, Luna could not be sure if that was the real reason that he had switched to using Imperio to mock the screams and effects of the Crucio without causing additional pain. It was a topic she would be happier off not exploring.

Especially when nightmares of Lucius had plagued her for the next year. While he, nor any Death Eater, had laid a hand on her in any darker way, Lucius had had an 'introduction' for her when she had first arrived. One with much more pain in her wrists and far more stripes cut into her back than the combination of ropes and wolves had created.

Thank Merlin for sessions with professional Mental Healers afterward, right?

"Not bad," Luna answered. "Not like sunshine and Beltaine flowers, but not yet Crucio and chains." She sent a look of concern at him, especially at his injured leg, touching the pant leg covering his shin for a moment. Before she reached into the inside pocket of her denim jacket and pulled out a small packet of make-shift bandages, carefully kept dry. "Your wound must be rebound. And the cuts to stomach and ear washed out." The bandages were held out to her friend, as she sat on the edge of the pew beside his elevated leg.

At her response, Andy gave a small, sympathetic smile. He had no idea what Crucio was, but something told him not to ask, so he didn't. The idea that she was familiar with being bound in chains, as was the inference in her response, broke his heart. He caught the concern on her face and looked down again. She looked so much like Tracy, just then, it made his stomach turn with discomfort.

Andy felt Luna touch him before she sat down and he looked up again. "Yeah, you're probably right," he agreed sullenly. Like he needed to deal with an infection on top of everything. "Do you still have water? I finished mine... Actually, maybe we should just go out and let the rain fill my empty bottle and not waste your drinking water cleaning me up," he suggested as he took the dressings from her. "I'm gonna need help with my ear since I don't have a mirror," he pointed out softly, in addition.

And probably with his leg, if he was honest, because stretching to reach is was going to hurt his ribs, but he wasn't going to ask her for help with that one. If she offered, he'd accept, but he wouldn't dream of asking her to get that close to his junk just to help him out when he was still a practical stranger to her. His stomach would probably be easy enough, at least, to deal with on his own, especially since it was the least of his concerns.

In her world, Luna's story was not exactly entirely rare. At least when it came to having had dealings with Death Eaters. Those who could claim, not that they really would want to, that they had been held in Voldemort's headquarters for months on end were pretty thin on the ground. Still, when it came to stories being repeated, especially for an adoring audience, it was the victories that were told. Not the darker and more desolate aspects. Those were only told over glasses of firewhiskey, and even then only rarely.

Something was still off, because for a moment there, while she was looking at him, she could plainly see something uncomfortable on his face. Still, it was not exactly unknown for people to be less than at ease with her. She was weird after all.

She nodded her blonde head, her slightly messy long ponytail flicking leftover rainwater behind her. Once he had taken the bandages out of her hand, she headed over to the pew where both of their kits had been set the night before, and grabbed his empty bottle. It was easier to go outside in the rain to sit down on the front steps, putting the bottle between her knees, and cup her hands together to form a makeshift funnel. The bottle filled steadily, as it was raining quite hard at the moment, plastering her hair and clothes to her once more.

It was with a nearly full water bottle that she got up, and returned to the church, and to where Andy sat.

"Your ear or leg first?" Luna quietly asked, pushing back a stray strand of hair that stuck to her lips.

Something about the way that Luna simply nodded and left him there without so much as a word made Andy's heart sink. Had he said something wrong? Done something wrong?

He watched over his shoulder as she disappeared outside and then propped his elbow up on the arm of the pew, dropping his head into his hand and running his fingers through his now-matted hair. Why is there no fucking Chick Manual? he wondered. For the life of him, Andy thought he would never, ever understand women and the things that went through their heads.

Luna's footsteps echoed in the aisle of the church and Andy looked over his shoulder again. She'd gone to get the water all by herself without waiting for him to join her and he watched her all the way up to the point that she asked which injury first, pushing a piece of hair out of her face. He hadn't missed the way it had been stuck to her lips; because of it, he was staring at them and licking his own nervously.

The insinuation in her question was that she was offering to help him without his having asked. In his entire life, with the waffling exception of the Winchesters - who actually, when he thought about it, were really only helping themselves - no one had ever taken care of him. Ever. His mother had died when he was so young that the only memory of her that he possessed was based on photographs and the resentful glare he sometimes saw on his father's face when he'd thought Andy wasn't looking. He'd spent his teen years in a haze of smoke that hadn't cleared until three days ago in Cold Oak. He'd gone out of his way to be Andy the Jester for so long that he was pretty sure the only person who really knew who he was was Andy himself. Tracy didn't even know who he really was and she'd been the only serious girlfriend he'd ever really had; they'd told each other everything. So, that was saying an awful lot.

It wasn't that he felt badly for himself, because for the most part, he didn't. It was just that...there was this beautiful, extraordinarily unique, endearingly quirky woman looking down at him and offering to take care of him. And Andy didn't know what to do with that.

"Can I kiss you?" he blurted out, blinking with astonishment that the words had actually come out of his mouth when he'd really only meant to think them. Taking a deep breath and searching her eyes, he was quick to add, "please don't slap me." Because, really, that was all he needed to compound the situation.

The mostly full water bottle held in both hands, her eyes widened at his question, stunned enough that she mostly missed the second half his statement.

Likely the reaction Luna had to his words was the exact opposite of what he wanted. She swallowed, hurt clearly displayed on her face as her jaw clenched and her lips pursed. And definitely not in a 'Kiss Away' sort of pursing, either. "It's not nice to make fun of people Andy," she spoke softly, unable to really say much more.

People made fun of her, she was both resigned to and mostly used to ignoring that people around her often did not take her seriously. It had been far worse at Hogwarts those first five years, and far, far worse that sixth. Still, for the most part it did not bother her all that much, she never had let it. Those people did not know her, and never even tried to, so obviously their opinions did not matter.

Andy had promised to be nice to her, and she had been sure that he would follow through on that promise.

With a quiet breath in and out, the blonde released her hurt as best she could and forgave him. He was her friend, right? And friends forgave each other. Even when they seemed to forget you existed, or invited you to a party and then disappeared, leaving you with the Divination teacher. Because that was what friends did for each other. Luna liked Andy, he had been much nicer than many of other her friends.

Without rancor, without sarcasm, and without any trace that she had felt as if he had struck her in the solar plexus, she asked, "Should we care for your ear or leg first?"

Andy gaped back at her, eyes wide and jaw slack. He had to admit, he definitely prefered her thinking he was being a douchebag to hauling off and slapping him, but he could barely process the possibility that someone would ask to kiss another person and be kidding. What kind of person would do something like that?! Not the type of person Andy was, that was for damn sure.

She'd swiftly moved on to the previous topic, asking again whether she should tend to his leg or his ear first and Andy felt like a deer in headlights. Which, was to say, that was quite obviously the expression on his face. Was he supposed to look ashamed and pretend she was right or take a chance at explaining himself and hope she believed him?

"Luna..." he said slowly, shaking his head and raising his eyebrows and looking back at her with something of a mix of confusion and his own brand of hurt in his expression. Did she really think he could be that cruel? Andy wasn't sure he wanted the answer to that question, because she'd looked so upset that he thought probably the answer was yes. "I wasn't making fun of you," he said softly, looking down for a moment before looking back up at her. "It was just a question..." he added, giving a sad smile that far from reached his eyes. "You could've just said no, I wouldn't have been mad or anything. It's just...I mean, look at you. You're beautiful, Luna, you know that. You have to know that..." his voice trailed off and he ran a hand through his hair again.

"Look, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said anything. I shouldn't have put you on the spot like that, but I really hope that you don't think I'm that kind of guy, because I'm not. That's just mean," he went on, frowning slightly. "I'd never make fun of you like that. Ever."

His leg or his ear? Maybe she should start with his ego, instead, he thought.

Being kidnapped, being tied up and left in the woods, having her wrists and back bandaged...those Luna was more used to than the situation at that exact moment. Which, really, if she had had the perspective to see it, was actually quite the reverse of normal.

Were she anyone else, she would have likely shifted uncomfortably, but it was just not in her nature.

Luna was surprised when Andy called her beautiful. Obviously she was aware that she was not physically displeasing, her father still called her his 'pretty daughter.' It was just that...well, people summed her up by the beliefs she held that they considered odd, by the way she moved and spoke, and every once in a rare while by the fact that she had been at the Final Battle. Although that last one had only come up in very specific circumstances, and it had been long ago.

The world was what it was, beautiful and magical. And she was who she was, the witch had always found herself secure in who she was and what she believed in. Worrying about her physical appearance had never been an issue, especially as during her teen years, when that issue could crop up, she had been busy attempting to fight Death Eaters and survive. Helping Harry and the rest of the Golden Trio try to stop Voldemort.

Usually she was pretty good at guessing peoples' intentions, at understanding what they were doing and mostly why. "I am sorry," she apologized for the unusually bad leap of logic. "You would not," her agreement that he was not the type to make fun of her was immediate, instinctual and true. Somehow she knew that he would not, and it surprised her to think that someone would not even think to tease her. At least not like she had thought he just had.

Luna trusted Andy.

Andy's eyes moved downward and he nodded more to himself than to her. "No, I wouldn't," he agreed with a sigh as he ran a hand through his hair again.

He assumed her failure to answer his question was the answer in itself. That was fine. He could just be friends with Luna and he could keep himself from thinking too much about the fact that he liked her. It wouldn't be anything new or terribly difficult for Andy. He was practically a pro, by now.

But with that decided, he looked back up at Luna and gave her a small smile that didn't reach his eyes. "I can do the leg and my stomach if you don't mind doing my ear," he said, finally asking her question from before. Might as well just get down to business and move off the previous subject. There wasn't any point in dwelling on it if it was just gonna make her uncomfortable and bum him out. "Do you mind...?" he ventured.

Briefly, Andy considered the entire situation. Maybe he didn't even really like her, anyway. Maybe it was just projection and the whole her reminding him of Tracy thing. He'd get over it in a few minutes. Probably. Nothing really changed; he was still going to take care of her and keep her safe and he still wanted to be her friend. Right. Nothing changed. Everything was the same and nothing changed.

There you go, Gallagher, be cool. No biggie. Shake it off, man, shake it off.

Her dating history was extremely spotty, in fact she had had exactly one serious boyfriend. A relationship which had ended without much of a fuss, and she and Neville and became simply friends again. He had been off to teach in Scotland, at Hogwarts, and she had been in the middle of a year of pure expeditions. Sending in her articles by owl post.

She had loved him, still did, but being friends worked perfectly well.

Before that, in school, she most definitely had not dabbled in dating. So the fact that Andy had wanted to kiss her would have taken her off guard, especially as they had just met. Even if she had not jumped to believing he was making fun of her. The thing was, before, when she had been in her fourth year at Hogwarts, something similar had happened. The guy had been a fellow Ravenclaw and a year above her, one who had never spoken to her before.

"After a DA meeting, when I was fourteen, Terry Boot asked if he could kiss me." Not actually looking at Andy, her eyes were actually on the roof above them, checking for leaks. Just in case. "It was a joke, Marietta hald told him it would be funny, promised that she would reward him for asking. Michael and Anthony could not stop laughing for some time." Of course, Luna had been both confused and hurt. Even for her housemates, it had been a cruel and hurtful joke to play. Because being in DA, to Luna, it had been like having friends.

Sometimes people were just mean, it was just how it was. Michael had been at the Final Battle at Hogwarts, but neither of them had spoken of what had happened two years before. And not years later when she had run into Terry Boot outside a book store in Diagon Alley. When he had asked her back to the Leaky Cauldron for drinks, she had simply blinked once at him and left him standing there in the street.

She looked down, although not that far, to meet his eyes. With a nod, she added an, "Of course," to his question. Putting one knee up on the pew beside him, and picking up one of the cloths and the water, she soaked the fabric. So that she was able to carefully clean out the gash in his ear, with a small sympathetic wince. Each movement was as careful as she could be, in an attempt to lessen the pain that she knew was inevitable. Without something to numb the area.

Luna's story explained the way she'd reacted to Andy's blunt request to kiss her and he furrowed his brow. He knew that kids were cruel; he'd been one of the smallest guys in school until junior year of high school, so he was no stranger to being teased. But what Luna was telling was just cruel. "What a dick..." was all he could come up with, though, because Andy couldn't fathom even the meanest person being that nasty. He hoped those people had gotten their up and comeance. Maybe they had, he thought. Maybe Luna had been a chubby, awkward teen with glasses held together with cellotape or something and now she was this bangin' hottie that they probably wished they hadn't been so rotten to back in the day. That was the kind of shit that was on Ricki Lake all the time, right? ...if Ricki Lake was even still on the air; Andy didn't know or care, really; it was just a fleeting thought.

He didn't want her to dwell on it, so that was all Andy had to say about the thing she'd confided. Luna agreed to help clean out his ear and as he prepared one of the cloths to dab at his leg, she got to work on his ear. Andy grimaced and set his jaw in pain as soon as she touched it, but he didn't want her to know that she was hurting him. Necessary evil, he thought, to keep it from getting too terribly infected. If she thought she was hurting him, she might stop and then he'd have to ask Martha to do it when she already had her own shit to deal with. "Thanks," he managed quietly, through gritted teeth as he patted the clean cloth against his leg and flinched when pain shot up his spine in response. This was gonna suck so much ass...

Leaving Terry and his friends in the past as much as possible, left them behind and slid easily into the current moment. Luna had no need to wallow in things past, the present was more than enough.

The flesh was raggedly torn, bleeding with the heavy trickle of blood rich skin of a head injury. The exposed piece of cartilage enough to make her wince sympathetically. Each of her movements to clean up the injury was slow and careful, each touch as barely there as possible. She hated to cause anyone pain, let alone her friend.

Still, pain could not always be avoided. Sometimes it was inevitable. A fact that was difficult to learn, but once it was learned, was impossible to completely forget.

Andy flinched, and one of her hands set on his arm, giving a reassuring grip. "Are you certain you don't require help?" The gash was high up on his leg, and she could see the bleeding and the damage left behind by the puma's attack. Pausing in her level look at him to twist the top back onto the bottle she held. This would be much easier if she had an adhesive bandage or a bottle of wound cleaning potion.

Andy was pretty sure he couldn't remember a time in his life that he'd been in as much pain as he was right then with Luna cleaning his ear and himself trying to ignore the dull pain in his ribs as he leaned down to see what he was doing when dabbing at his leg gingerly. He was going to get shit done if he kept at it all gently the way he was, especially because he wasn't taking the pants off in front of Luna. Not without a pair of boxers he fucking wasn't.

When Luna asked if he was sure he didn't want help, Andy looked up at her again, feeling her hand on his arm. Ducking his head, Andy closed his eyes and admitted defeat. "Please?" he sighed. "I can't; I know it's gonna hurt, so I can't make myself do it," he admitted with a frown. He hated to say it out loud like that, but there it was.

What kind of a man couldn't just do the damn thing and suck it up? A fucking wuss, that was what kind. Setting his jaw again, Andy leaned his head back and then sighed again. So far as Andy could see right at that moment in time, the only good thing about this place was Luna. It was like he was stuck in a bad fuckin' dream and the only consolation was the random subconciously-generated and obligatory hot chick tending to him.

"Just...be quick?" he asked, trying his very hardest not to sound like the pathetic loser he felt like he was just then.

"It's okay," she soothed, practically petting his arm for a second. "Everything's going to be all right Andy, you will see." In her experience, and beliefs, admitting weakness was not weakness at all. But was, instead, strength. Perhaps not the best or clearest explanation for how she felt about and saw the matter, but it took more courage in her opinion to admit you needed help than to drive yourself into the ground going it alone. Especially when there were others there who could and were willing to help.

Having finished with his ear, she took the makeshift bandages and cloth from his hand and took a second to simply look at the wound. "I have seen worse, but it must hurt greatly." At least no colored Wound Imps flew about to make this even more difficult than it had to be. Nearly a decade had passed since she had had to help clean even more than superficial cuts and scratches. Her wrists and back notwithstanding.

With a nod of her blonde head, with the tips of her long hair slowly drying as it was bound behind her, Luna began what she knew was going to be unpleasant.

The fabric was torn around the wound, and she had to move the frayed edges just so to the side to free the claw marks to clear view. As swiftly as possible, taking care to still be as gentle as she could and still get the job done well, she set to cleaning the still bleeding wound.

At Luna's reassurance, Andy gave her a weak smile and closed his eyes. He saw Tracy there, lying beside him in the back of his van, a sheet pulled up around her chest and he could almost feel her fingers in his hair.

"I can't live here, Trace. I don't know what to do...Jesus, I mean, what kind of asshole loses his job for coming in stoned and then gets evicted in the same week?"

"Shit happens. You'll figure something out; you always do. We can figure something out together. Everything's gonna be fine, Andy, you'll see."

Everything wasn't fine, though. He had lived in the back of the van, mooching off Tracy's generousity for food and Webber's overzealous want to be Andy's buddy for the pot. For a year. A whole year before the mind thing kicked in and rather than always having to move his van to a new spot or ignore phone calls from bill collectors - he must've owed Tracy close to a grand for his cell phone - he was able to tell people that they'd given him permisson to park or that he'd already sent in the payment and if they checked their databases, they'd see it.

He'd gotten so used to the van that he'd just stayed there, never mind the fact that he couldn't be bothered to have to use the mind thing once a month to tell a landlord that he'd paid the rent when he hadn't.

Everything wasn't fine, ever, and then she'd broken up with him and while it had been amiable, things hadn't really ever been the same. Webber was trying too hard to be his friend and Tracy was trying too hard not to hurt his feelings. He'd told Sam when asked, back in Guthrie, that he had everything he needed, which was true. Eventually he'd found happiness with what he had and he didn't need anything else. That didn't mean he was always happy with it, though. It just meant he'd settled and he was too lazy to change things.

He opened his eyes again and looked up at her when she went on talking. "Yeah, hurts like a bitch," he admitted. He winced as she moved the ravaged fabric out of the wound and out of her way, closing his eyes again to let her work without having to actually see what she was doing. Granted, the tactile sense was heightened slightly when he blocked off the sense of sight, but he didn't suppose it would make much of a difference whether he watched or not and he didn't like the idea of bearing witness. If she happened to look up at the pain in his face, Andy sure as hell didn't want to see the pity on hers. He didn't need her pity and he didn't want it.

When he was fairly certain she was finished, Andy opened his eyes again and looked back at her. "Thanks, Luna," he said quietly and sincerely. He was exhausted and didn't really have the energy to bring things back around to see if she'd object to him kissing her, so he let it lie and decided maybe that was a sign that he shouldn't. "Do you care if I lay down for a little while? I'm exhausted..." He'd stay awake if she wanted him to; if she needed him to, to feel safe, but if she was cool with him catching some Zs, he was going to. It was daylight, so hopefully things would be okay if he dozed for a little while.
