Day 11: Fixing up the Barn
Who: The Doctor, Gambit, Ianto, Logan, Jack and still very OTA
What: Making the barn habitable
Where: The Barn
When: 3:30 PM, day 11
Rating: PG-13, depending?

Status: Complete

Returning to the barn had seemed like the right thing for the Doctor to do following his chat with Jack. It had leveled him a bit and made the Doctor focused back upon what was important - and for now it was caring for the people he was here with - not running off on mission impossible hoping that he might be able to make things go his way.

The crackled road wound around and revealed the structure with it's leaning roof, dislocated hay loft, and singular wall that was leaning of it's own accord. Somehow, The pair of them had found the one spot within it that had allowed them to climb out of the tunnal the day before. There wasn't a ton of space in there; but, there was potential. There were the couches, and a sturdy enough tin roof. There were remnants of the walls from before and a floor that seemed relatively intact. The Doctor knew that with some help he could make something of this place.

Crossing off the road onto the gravel path that lead up to what had formerly been the entry to the barn he ducked inside and in an act of finality, he pushed a couch right over top of the trap door. If this place was going to be their shelter, it wouldn't do to have someone barging in on them at nightfall. Or at any fall for that matter.

"We all live in a yellow subarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine," the Doctor sang away as he pushed the couches around the barn turned lean-to. Walking up he pushed on the remaining wall. It shuddered a little, but it seemed stable enough. All he needed was someone to help him reinforce the tin roof. Wouildn't do having it blown off onto the barn below at the slightest hint of wind.

The Doctor sighed. He wasn't really listening at all, was he? No, his mind was off elsewhere. He'd heard Gambit stop talking and he hadn't even managed to react. Poor form, he thought, fingers itching to be shoved deep into bottomless pockets. He'd have to live with crossing his arms. He never liked that stance, made people thing you had something wrong with you.

The group, apparently was looking for a hammer. Fine. He could go find a hammer. He needed out of this space, at least for a little while. A small amount of time to decompress remember that he was bigger than being upset by an overgrown hormone, and then come back and do whatever needed to be done.

"I'm pretty sure I saw a hammer in the thrift shop the other day," It was clearly his attempt at an excuse to get out of there - but at the moment the Time Lord didn't much care what the group thought of him. No, he needed to get his temper back under his control. It wouldn't do any good to get upset again.

"I'll be back in a tick," he said over his shoulder, jittery steps taking him out of the barn and back out to the road. He wasn't listening to see if there were any protests - he imagined Jack knew that it would be best for him to evacuate for a little while.

Gambit turned to watch him go but said nothing of it. He knew all about needing time to himself, so with another turn, he was glancing back at Logan. "Okay, mon ami. We gon' get 'dem up, like 'de man say, 'den pull up 'de walls. Logan got 'de 'xperience to be doin 'dis, non, homme? I ain' never buil' no house 'fore." So he was talking from experience watching movies. And that Weird Al video, where the Amish were putting up the barn -- that was where he'd gotten the idea for using the rope to levy up the side of the barn. Yeah. Thank MTV for that.

A side-glance was sent to Jack. "Yan'no can s'abilize it, non?" So that he didn't have to help with any of the actual hard work. The two immortals could do the most of it. Gambit could supervise!

Like they'd let him get away with it.

Logan didn't say a word when Doc skittered off.

Gambit, though, wasn't about to get so lucky. "You can drag the rest of the posts over here. They're about a hundred yards that way." He pointed into the woods. "And make it snappy. As for the rest, yeah, I know how to do this."

The unspoken comment/question was ... would all the egos allow for it to GET done?

"Ianto, if you'd do us a favor and play spotter? Let us know when the damn wall's as close to fully upright as possible?" Logan wanted to know. Ok, so it wasn't doing the actual /work/ of getting the wall upright, but it was still something that needed doing. Since Logan and Jack would be on the one side of the wall, they wouldn't have the world's best view to know when it was mostly upright. "Bit of luck, and this wall will be up and braced in ten minutes."

Jack did know it was in everyone's best interests that the Doctor move off for a few minutes. It didn't stop Jack from taking a hesitant step towards the other man the just stood there, hands shoved deep into his pockets for a moment. Best for him to go off and they'd take care of things here for now.

Fucking hell.

Jack pulled his hands from his pockets and moved to stand beside Logan, ready to hold the wall in place once they had raised it. "Bit of luck? Right now, I think we could use all the luck we can get."

"As long as it's good luck," he called to the both of them, "I'd settle for a bit." Ianto shuffled into position, head tipped a bit to judge the lean of the wall while the other two raised it. Occasionally, he glanced over at Gambit, to see how he was taking the forced labor. Ianto half expected him to go haring off as well.

Not that the Doctor went haring off or anything. Ianto rubbed a bit at his bandaged arm and tried to make the most of things. It was rough, though.
