Day 11: Fixing up the Barn
Who: The Doctor, Gambit, Ianto, Logan, Jack and still very OTA
What: Making the barn habitable
Where: The Barn
When: 3:30 PM, day 11
Rating: PG-13, depending?

Status: Complete

Returning to the barn had seemed like the right thing for the Doctor to do following his chat with Jack. It had leveled him a bit and made the Doctor focused back upon what was important - and for now it was caring for the people he was here with - not running off on mission impossible hoping that he might be able to make things go his way.

The crackled road wound around and revealed the structure with it's leaning roof, dislocated hay loft, and singular wall that was leaning of it's own accord. Somehow, The pair of them had found the one spot within it that had allowed them to climb out of the tunnal the day before. There wasn't a ton of space in there; but, there was potential. There were the couches, and a sturdy enough tin roof. There were remnants of the walls from before and a floor that seemed relatively intact. The Doctor knew that with some help he could make something of this place.

Crossing off the road onto the gravel path that lead up to what had formerly been the entry to the barn he ducked inside and in an act of finality, he pushed a couch right over top of the trap door. If this place was going to be their shelter, it wouldn't do to have someone barging in on them at nightfall. Or at any fall for that matter.

"We all live in a yellow subarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine," the Doctor sang away as he pushed the couches around the barn turned lean-to. Walking up he pushed on the remaining wall. It shuddered a little, but it seemed stable enough. All he needed was someone to help him reinforce the tin roof. Wouildn't do having it blown off onto the barn below at the slightest hint of wind.

This was the sort of thing that Ianto had come across when he first tried to get people to band together. It had been an abysmal failure and he felt that it was because of all the egos in town, jockeying for place. Sort of like now. Bad moods and brooding men, smarmy bastards and then Jack, who was all that together.

Still, Ianto made exceptions for Jack since he knew that the Captain could be sensible most of the time.

But the rest of it was annoying at best, counter productive at worst.

"Honestly? I thi-- little missus?" Wait, what? Ianto paused in his rope coiling to stare at Gambit in confusion. "Are you calling me a little missus? Seriously?" What the hell? Shaking his head, Ianto continued to coil the rope.

Yes, Doc. Logan did just try to put you in your place. You weren't imagining things.

"Just 'cause I don't act like some dandified, prancing, simpering idiot don't mean I don't act like an adult Doc. Yanno, for a guy that claims to be well traveled, y'ain't learned a hell of a lot about people have ya?"

Sorry, Gambit ... attempt at pacification? Failed.

"Haven't built a barn before, no, but I have built shit. An' it's more like a tenth of a degree ... that wall's got about fifteen degrees more tilt before it topples. Oh, by the way ... y'might not wanna step to yer right. Liable to sprain your ankle. Looks sturdy enough, but there's oly a thin layer of shit and a nice hole below it for your leg to drop into."

Enhanced senses ... could be fun sometimes. "And like I said the first time ... despite what you think, not dumb enough to brawl in here."

Then he turned on Gambit. "And why the hell you're justifying shit to him, I'll never know. X-Geeks must /really/ have rubbed off on you." Another look at that wall. "Ain't trees you need, but support beams. Got it handled."

And, popping the middle claw on his right hand at everyone in general, Logan stalked off into the trees to go cut shit up. Before he cut /people/ up.

"And just because you act like a hyper-hormoned fool doesn't make you an adult, either," the Doctor spat. "That adamantium must have went to your brain." The Doctor was not on low simmer, he was at the stage of full on rolling boil with the water starting to spit over the sides.

"Oh, it's two tenths at the far end, though. I don't go for over simplification." The hole that Logan was referring to was actually the pit down into the tunnels below. The Doctor ignored him.

"At least you're good for something other than your failing wit," the Time Lord barked. Yes, he barked. His jaw was set and currently he was turning in the opposite direction that Logan had headed and was walking out the opposite side of the barn.

He wasn't doing anyone any good right now. At all.

When Logan made that comment about him hanging out with the X-Geeks too much, he rolled his head back and grit his back teeth. The damn Wolverine was right! Ugh, was it showing so much? He needed to get out of these place, get away from these good, decent people. Damn them for being so nice. His life was going to be ruined by this one set of encounters, wasn't it? A hand lifted to rub at his head as Logan stalked out, and the Doctor went to his end of the barn, like two fighters separating after a match. He turned his head again to let red and black eyes follow Logan's form until he disappeared into the trees, looking almost concerned. But then he realized that it was very likely his expression could be seen and he shrugged up his shoulder and turned to smile smoothly at Ianto and Jack.

"No bloo'she'. 'Das a win, non?" He'd go out after Logan later. He'd goad him into a fight. And he'd help get him a bit less on edge, at least. That would help bring everyone down a notch. "Bien, sur une note plus brillante," The Cajun began slowly, lifting his eyebrows as he did. "I go' wa'er, an' somet'in' to ea', I t'ink everyone need somet'in', non?" Not eating certainly always put him in a cranky mood. And with that statement, he was moving over to his little separated room and ducked down to pull a long, flat box out from under the couch, and dropped it on top of the cushions, then flipped it open to pull out four waters. One was instantly flicked at Ianto, and would land right near his hands. Jack's? Well, his was aimed.. more for the head. But surely, he'd catch it. And Gambit was then stepping up to offer the last out out to the Doctor, eyebrows lifting.

"Je suis désolé." That was more quietly said to him, so the others wouldn't hear it, and it came without a smile, for once.

For once in his very long life, Jack kept his mouth shut. Really, actually kept his mouth shut, even though there were various responses and jibes that bounded to the surface but Jack actually bit his tongue. He hoped the others realised the effort it was taking to actually keep his mouth shut.

However, the moment he heard the tone in the Doctor's voice, Jack dropped the piece of timber he'd been holding on his foot. He may have howled in pain but his gaze was still fixed on the Doctor. This... wasn't good. At all.

Jack barely managed to catch the water bottle thrown at him, though he should have expected it was coming. He popped the cap off, taking a long swig and recapping it. Throwing an apologetic look at Ianto, Jack turned on his heel and followed the Doctor to the other end of the barn, reaching the other man and putting a hand on his shoulder. "Doctor..." he said with a softly, warning tone. There was a look of utter concern on his face, one he didn't try to hide either. "The two of them... they're only trying to get a rise out of us. We're right, and they're lashing out. Let's just get this done and ignore the two testosterone-laden men, and no comments about my own ego in there either."

He didn't move his hand, just gave the Doctor's shoulder a squeeze, praying to god that he was calming the Doctor down.

Oh, well. This isn't going very well at all.

Ianto stooped to pick up the water tossed in his direction, offering Remy a sort of distracted nod, then sat himself down exactly where he was. He ached, though he didn't want to admit it. It probably meant that Jack was right. He didn't want to admit to that, either.

Watery blue eyes flickered back and forth between the other four and he pressed his lips into a thin little line as he thought. "You know," he said to the room at large. "If I was at home, I'd be brewing coffee and fishing out donuts to feed people. Possibly dosing the coffee with scotch."
