Day 11: Fixing up the Barn
Who: The Doctor, Gambit, Ianto, Logan, Jack and still very OTA
What: Making the barn habitable
Where: The Barn
When: 3:30 PM, day 11
Rating: PG-13, depending?

Status: Complete

Returning to the barn had seemed like the right thing for the Doctor to do following his chat with Jack. It had leveled him a bit and made the Doctor focused back upon what was important - and for now it was caring for the people he was here with - not running off on mission impossible hoping that he might be able to make things go his way.

The crackled road wound around and revealed the structure with it's leaning roof, dislocated hay loft, and singular wall that was leaning of it's own accord. Somehow, The pair of them had found the one spot within it that had allowed them to climb out of the tunnal the day before. There wasn't a ton of space in there; but, there was potential. There were the couches, and a sturdy enough tin roof. There were remnants of the walls from before and a floor that seemed relatively intact. The Doctor knew that with some help he could make something of this place.

Crossing off the road onto the gravel path that lead up to what had formerly been the entry to the barn he ducked inside and in an act of finality, he pushed a couch right over top of the trap door. If this place was going to be their shelter, it wouldn't do to have someone barging in on them at nightfall. Or at any fall for that matter.

"We all live in a yellow subarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine," the Doctor sang away as he pushed the couches around the barn turned lean-to. Walking up he pushed on the remaining wall. It shuddered a little, but it seemed stable enough. All he needed was someone to help him reinforce the tin roof. Wouildn't do having it blown off onto the barn below at the slightest hint of wind.

At the comment at his Wellies, Ianto looked down and grinned a little at them, twisting a bit, here and there, as if posing in them. "Well, they do keep my feet dry. Pink, though, really isn't my color." Lies! He had pink shirts and ties at home! Still, given Gambit's comment, Ianto decided that he wasn't in the mood to actually say this.

When Logan turned up, Ianto turned and offered him a bit of a smile. The only place they had met was at Jack's ridiculous death off. But it was good to see that Logan wasn't exaggerating and that he did come through unscathed.

Unlike himself. "One piece, mainly, Doctor. Though, I did find something that might be of use to you." Ianto's hair was flattened, yes, but like this it had a tendency to curl, making him look very boyish, indeed. So it wasn't all bad. The Doctor's hair was like Jack's. In a constant state of sticky uppy. He fished the journal out of his sling and offered it over to the Doctor.

"What needs to be done, do you lot think? I'm not a builder, but I can help."

Seemed like the Barn would be the first order of business, Jack would take a few of the more able-bodied folks towards that carnival in the later part of the day (provided the weather held) and see how much could be disassembled. The taking down would be easier than the putting up.

He had wandered around the 'town' for the better part of the day, feeling useless. So, at least, here was something to help with. Jack's eyes, however, narrowed when he saw Ianto. What part of 'take it easy' didn't the other man understand?

"Just hold nails for a few people," Jack said, coming up behind Ianto, hands shoved into his trouser pockets. A smile (albeit forced) found its way to his face. "Doctor... Logan... Gambit. Hey, hey the gang's all here."

It was like an odd collection all the sudden: Logan and Ianto, Jack and... Gambit? Oh no, the Doctor could hear the world imploding and see it right before his eyes. Was there enough space in this glass dome for all these egos colliding? Forget the dome, how about whatever planet they were on? Solar System? Galaxy? He imagined that the shock through time and space could be felt all the way back long before the time war.

"Right." There were a million and one things said just then that the Doctor chose to disregard.

"Nails, something akin to bracing for the wall we need to reset, and something to reinforce the only wall we've got left," the Doctor gestured to the wall beside him which may have actually been being held up by the tin roof. "We'll worry about getting all of the walls up once we get the first one set. Step one is dragging this roof out of the way so we can work." The Doctor kept his ears peeled, it wouldn't hurt to have more help right about now. There was Gambit with his bum shoulder, Ianto with his mashed up arm, and he with a tweak in his back. That left Logan and Jack the only ones at full strength.

"Providing this all works we're going to need an accurate idea of how many people we can fit in here..." He was sort of getting ahead of himself, wasn't he?

"Right..." The Doctor looked around a moment expectantly before sticking his hands in his pockets.

"Takes more'n a damn earthquake to kill me." Logan told Gambit. "Look like you got roughed up, though."

He nodded briefly to the others, ignoring the teasing banter for the most part.

"Gimmie ten minutes and some decent metal and I can /make/ nails, Doc." Adamantium ... gotta love it sometimes. "And provided we clear everything out and put up dividers, I think we could get everyone in here."

That said, he glanced over at Jack, shrugged, and headed for the hunks of roof. "Might still be able to use some of this." He said as he started trying to figure out how to untangle a section from the rubble underneath it without getting slash-happy.

Jack got a wink upon his arrival and the red-head lifted his eyebrows at the Doctor. The planet could very well be in danger, with Logan, Gambit, Jack and the Doctor all trying to fit their egos into the same place at the same time. They had better be careful it didn't turn into a pissing contest, or they might drown the inhabitants of the glass box before saving them.

"Oui, I know. I tried." The Cajun broke into a grin as he said that, eyebrows lifting. But he'd leave it at that and push his good hand into the pocket of his jeans before lifting the other one some. "Jus' a bruise now, Docteur fix it up." Assured calmly, before he rotated it a bit. It still hurt, but it was much better than it had been yesterday. He'd really needed that rest.

But when Wolverine began talking about actual work. That was where the Cajun knew it was time to bow out. His injured arm lifted some so he could wave his partially gloved hand. "You all have fun wit' 'dat. Don' bring what's lef' of 'de barn down on my hea', non?" Even as he was speaking, he was turning away to go back to the little lean-to he'd made up against the stable wall in the barn. His couch had been shoved under it, and the water and food he'd found and collected was in there as well. Protected by the dangerous Cajun within his wooden cave. He'd offer them water later, don't worry. But for now? He was keeping it all to himself.

"I can swing a hammer, if we had one," Ianto protested mildly and stepped over to help Logan sort through the wreckage of the roof. He could probably scavenge nails from the shingles. He flashed an amused smile in Jack's direction, though, before he bent and began dragging planks one handed.

Gambit, though, was sort of stared at as he vanished into his hidey hole. "Oi! It isn't nap time yet!" They were all in this together, like it or not.

Let the battle of the egos begin. Round one and go.

Lips pursed, Jack looked at the slightly fallen structure, trying to figure out the best way to attack things. If there was one person who wasn't going to be moving the roof out of the way, it was Ianto -- and the scowl on his face said just how pleased he was when the other man started picking up planks to move. Not to mention Gambit suddenly... leaving.

The hell?

"Well, by way of metal, I'm sure we could cannibalise some of the rides at the carnival," Jack said, glancing at Logan. "Would be enough of a start, unless we wanted to start completely demolishing buildings and use the nails from there. But that, then, raises the problem of what to do when making the next structures."

Jack shook his head, frowning. "But it's back to the earlier point of not having everyone in the same place at the same time. And Gambit, where the hell do you think you're going?" Jack pointed at Ianto, glaring. "And you, put that down. One bad arm is enough without getting both out of commission."

"Now, let's get the roof moved. Or, rather, chunks of the roof."

Had the Doctor been surprised by the fact Logan had jumped in with both hands and started with the talk of work and exact things he needed and wanted to do? No. Nor had he been surprised by Jack. Ianto's reaction had been unexpected, though appreciated. Gambit, however was disappointing. The Doctor crossed his arms. He'd just finished explaining to a newcomer that they worked together and here was the Cajun skulking off to his hole.

Leading by example the Doctor leaned over and started to tug at the rubble at his feet. He knew from his conversation with Gambit earlier that the other had some sort of issue with being needed - which the Doctor hadn't quite figured out yet.

"Could I get a hand with this?" He called, squatting down as he tried to pull up a toppled piece of stall.

It was strange to the Doctor to see Jack behaving the way he was toward Ianto; though, he supposed it shouldn't be all that expected. He'd seen the way he'd taken care of Rose, not to mention his experience with the Face of Boe. Perhaps this was just a preview moment?

"Anyone?"

Go indeed.

Logan let out an aggravated growl when Gambit slunk off. He let go of the chunk of roof he'd been messing with and was halfway to Gambit's den when Jack had to mouth off.

Logan turned towards Jack and gave him a look that said 'Shut up, moron'. "Gee, thanks, Jack. I couldn't quite figure out what the hell we needed to do when Doc told us the first time." He snarked before turning back and continuing on his way, reaching into Gambit's lair and hauling him out bodily.

"Dunno what the fuck you think you're doing, red-eyes, but you can work the same as the rest of us." He snapped.

(Chris says to skip Ianto once and when we come back around, she'll take her turn!)

The poor group of men. None of them really had any idea how to deal with Logan, did they? For that fact, none of them had any idea how to deal with the Cajun. Guilting him certainly didn't work, the red-head had enough guilt to last him the Doctor's lifetime. He wouldn't care about adding a bit more onto the pile.

He'd just laid down comfortably on that couch when that (dangerous) hand snapped in and grabbed a fistful of his hair, and the Cajun let out a short, loud noise of pain, but was scrambling off of the couch and quickly out of his little hand-made house, his partially gloved hands coming up to grab at Logan's wrist and pull it away, before rubbing at his head and the offended hair there. "Ain' gotta be like 'dat, homme. Je crois que vous m'avez juste cassé." But he was grinning. How anyone could smile through being pulled out of his happy home, by his hair, was beyond most people. It was almost like he was expecting it. Almost like he was enjoying this whole.. mess. And both counts were true, really.

The Cajun knew Logan intimately, even from just the few months they'd worked together. They had instantly clicked, he and the other mutant, and they'd instantly started fighting. But oddly, both of them watched out for the other. They had a strange relationship, one that Gambit both appreciated and loathed. But having Wolverine around in some capacity, was almost nice. Almost. He continued rubbing his gloved hand through his hair, against his sore scalp.

Really, he was pleased that Logan had come in there and hauled him out. He'd wanted to help, but he couldn't just.. help them. If he did, then everyone would want his help, and he couldn't handle being one of them. No. He'd never wanted to be one of the good guys. It wasn't him. It couldn't be him. The good guys and he never got along, not really. Then again, he and the 'bad guys' never really got along, either. The Cajun's life was complicated. "You manhan'le me like 'dat, mon ami, 'dey gonna know 'bou' us." The red-head then jerked a thumb at the other mutant. "He like to be all manly." Playfully jabbed.
