Day 11: Early Morning
Who: Dean Winchester & Lexie Grey
What: Dean is hurt, Lexie's a doctor... um
When: Early morning
Where: Gym
Rating: R (language - it IS Dean)
Status: Active

Dean had spent a really restless night on the cot. Half the time he was either in pain, tossing and turning in such a way as to not bump the broken bones even if his body didn't want to sleep just on one side, or awake and listening to the pitiful groans of others in far more pain than he was. It made for a very cranky morning when the sun finally began peeking through the cracks in the rubble of the gym roof and walls. He grumbled under his breath as he tried to turn over and gasped as a sharp pain shot through his side.

"Oh fucking, fuck," he cussed and pulled himself up to a sitting position with another gasp against the pain. He'd been dreaming, during what little time he'd spent sleeping, about the red-eyed man yanking his arm and popping his elbow back into joint with a wet, angry stab of pain. He momentarily thought Elliot was back at his side, discussing where it hurt but he blinked his eyes hard a few times. Life around him was chaos.

"Someone needs their ass fucking kicked in," he grumbled and held his arms close to his side, surveying the chaos of the gym with bleary eyes. He wondered if, among the cots, Sam was among the wounded. He wanted to catch the next person in a white lab coat and ask. He grabbed at the passing tail of a white coat and held fast. "Is my brother here?" he demanded.

Dean watched her struggle to her feet and wished he could help her. He wondered then why he was always so quick to want to help all these girls. Lexie and Luna, he understood, but why all of them? And why were there so many of them that seemed to need help. This place was full of big, dumb men who could do the grunt work and intelligent, tiny women who needed to be protected. That was a generalization of course but it struck him then just how lopsided everything was here. But as long as the need was there, he was going to do what he could until he was too exhausted to do any more. Then he'd rest, heal and get back to it.

He scooted over in the cot as she moved to lie down beside him. It was a slow, careful dance of fitting into each other in the exact way so as not to hurt either one of them in the process. Still there were plenty of bumps and winces and twinges of pain for Dean. He was sure she felt them in her own shoulder. He was almost not sure it had been a good idea for him to suggest this. But when she was settled he was glad he'd asked her. He was glad for her warm body against his and the way she fit against him. He couldn't do much but he did put his arm around her, resting his bandaged hand gingerly against her shoulder.

"Thank you," he whispered back, grateful she wanted to be close. Having her there was soothing and she was the one person here, other than Sam, that he trusted implicitly. When that had happened he wasn't sure but he knew that his walls were down with Dr. Lexie Grey right now and he knew instinctively that she would be gentle as always. She was safe territory. He hoped she felt the same way about him. That even though they'd hardly known each other a few days, he was someone she could rely on.

Gently he nuzzled her hair with his chin because he couldn't stroke it comfortingly the way she'd stroked his. What would this experience be like without her? She was so calm and composed in spite of everything that was happening around them. He wondered if she had some secret way of being detached from it all for the sake of her work or if she was the type to stuff it down like he did and blow up later when no one was around. There was a lot about her he'd like to know but he was not one for heart to hearts usually and now was not really the time to get into it. Maybe he'd ask her out for some skunky beer and some conversation later when the whole disaster was behind them and he was more on the mend. Dean Winchester, bigshot dude did not have friends. But maybe Lexie Grey was the exception to the rule.

"So," he said quietly. "Have you done much crinkling lately? I've been in withdrawal. Think maybe you might give me a little crinkle sometime, Doc?" He smiled to himself and breathed out a laugh into her hair. They'd come full circle in some ways. This was a lot less sexually charged than the first time they'd cuddled together back in the pharmacy. It was just as nice as far as he was concerned. Especially considering he was managing pain, albeit not as much as before because he'd been given some medication. The quiet, rest with her was exactly what he needed right now.

Her injured shoulder was tucked beneath her, the compression of it beneath her an actual relief as bones and tendons tried to find their natural place once more. The sling they'd made had been less than idea as it didn't allow her to pull the socket back into place, leaving her arm still hanging which only irritated the wound more. She kept waiting to hear the magical pop of ligaments finding their home, though she knew it would take time and work.

She felt like a rock, his whispered thanks met only with a slow nod, a quiet sigh, and the delicate placement of her hand not far from her head as she mimic'd the concept of holding. She could feel his hand set down on her shoulder and decided that this was close enough. She could breathe and she could rest. The gym was quiet and it was OK to just lie there for a little while.

Already her eyes were fighting a losing battle, feeling his chin rub slowly back and forth making a molasses slow smile stick to her lips and spread. Comfort. Protection. Safety. Breathing. Who knew these things were luxuries; though, apparently for Lexie they were. She felt like she was indulging, like she was having something she shouldn't. Perhaps she'd managed to get too used to being scared.

When she realized he was asking if she'd been crinkling lately she couldn't help but giggle quietly. "Only in your dreams, Winchester," she whispered, opening her eyes and titling her head to look up at him.

"Heated any spaces lately?" She was trying to tease back well, though she felt like she was running on fumes. Her mind worked to avoid any connontations to that phrase. She and Dean were just a pair of people who got on really well. They flirted and made out. He brought her flowers. She fixed his hands.

They were a pair who sparred and jabbed and were caught up in an impossible situation. Impossible situations make for impossible things. That meant to Lexie that she ought to only try and thrive in the quiet moments and not read too much into anything. She supposed he probably needed someone to hold just as much as she did. No need to assume anything, Lexie; unless it's that everything means nothing at all.

"We could be on a beach right now," she murmured breathily. "Maybe in Tahiti. Or the Bahamas. Someplace tropical. Waves lapping in on our feet. A nice bucket of beers, maybe a stereo." Her mind was carrying her off and away to a shore somewhere that they were lounging in the sand. Her mind slipped miles away from Vas then and for a few brief moment's Lexie Grey had her escape.

Pain killers were nice but they didn't stop you from feeling sudden jarring or incidental twinges. Ah well. She was a salve all on her own to him right now. Having her there made it easier for him to relax and ease out of the wired state he'd been in all day. He hoped she'd stay for a few hours but he was pretty sure she'd have to get up and get back to work. It seemed to be in her nature to be busily working whenever she could be. Why else would she have set up the clinic?

"Since I'm falling asleep, you promise?" he asked and grinned sleepily down at her as she looked up. He gave her an impulsive, light peck on the lips. It seemed the natural thing to do and he was nothing if not affectionate at the moment. Just an unavoidable side effect of being sleepy... or maybe of being with her. He couldn't tell anymore. In the back of his mind a small voice told him he wouldn't have done it had she been Shannon and the fact that Shannon had crept into his time with Lexie annoyed him momentarily. He shoved thoughts of her aside.

"You know, I almost went supernova the other day," he answered her and gave her the gentlest of squeezes with the elbow that rested against her. "Almost wish it would snow again." He yawned softly, turning his face away from her as he did.

He wondered what she was thinking about as she fell quiet for a few moments or if she'd fallen asleep. He began to drift off himself until she started talking again. It startled him slightly and he chuckled inwardly at himself. He really had let his guard down, hadn't he? Startled by someone murmuring about beaches and relaxation.

"Mm sounds good to me, Doc. At this beach are you wearing a bikini?" he asked softly with a note of amusement in his voice. Unable to help himself, he added, "Or would this be a nudist beach?" He laughed then but it was so quiet that all he did was shake slightly and cough once as his ribs protested again.

Lexie is he sort to be a mover and a shaker. In fact, her tendency to keep moving, even at a slow pace lead some to wonder if she didn't rely upon some sort of chemical to fuel her energy, for better or worse she was more fueled by an odd mixture of curiousity and compassion. Well, that an a set of goals that served more like fodder for a steeple chase than a finish line for a sprinter.

"I'll see what I can do," she said to his grin, her own expression about to mirror his own as that brief brush of his lips left her smile stuck somewhere between dreamy grin and subtle smirk. "I'd call that funny business," she mused, laying her head back down on his shoulder. She wasn't certain what had brought that tiny bit of affection her way but it left her half-dead brain swimming.

"Supernova." That should have sounded like a question, instead it was more of a statement. "That would have been one awfully warm space." When he'd mentioned the snow her mind went to retracing the pharmacy which of course made her thoughts wander. It was how she'd wound up with her brain on the beach. This time, Dean wasn't her cabana boy, he was settled in a hammock with her. It was summer, he in his trunks, she in her swimsuit the feel of his skin against hers hot and soft.

"Bikini?" That did sound like a question this time as her mind left surfside and landed itself back onto the cot next to the object of her affection. Her mind had slipped itself off to that place, hadn't it? She'd worked so hard at being busy and distracted and flirty and not 'that' girl; that she'd taken a step down the path from flirty friend to flirty with intent. Intent to what?

Oh, she didn't want to go that way. It was never good to go that way. Crash and burn. Contrary to what she thought she did or did not want to do, Lexie stayed right where she was, her breathing slow as she chewed her lip a little. She couldn't help but feel like she'd managed to step onto a live wire. Dean was the flirty gallavanting hero who ran around saving girls. Don't set yourself up for this one, Lexie, she thought, forcing her mind back into the wit and comfort of their playful banter. "Why is it I can picture you in a purple banana hammock?"

She noticed the way he winced when he laughed and immediately she wished she hadn't joked. "Sorry," she whispered and winced. Her free hand snaked up from where it rested on his chest up toward his right shoulder to gently rub, a consolatory gesture.
