Who: Mitsuru & The Doctor [ and still open, I suppose! ]
What: Arrival
When: 7AM, Day 11
Where: In the woods, near the Carnival
Rating: G
Status: Active

Mitsuru stretched, and shifted, one arm going out to shut off her alarm clock out of sheer force of habit and muscle memory. Did it matter that the alarm wasn’t going off? Not really. She was still more asleep than awake, and her body was telling her that waking up meant alarm going off.

When her hand found something slightly spiky and cold, instead of her alarm clock, the surprise was enough to kick-start her conscious brain into action. It noticed several things right off the bat: she was chilly, she was a bit damp, she was lying in the oddest position, on top of something hard and sort of sharp (which wasn’t like her bed even in the slightest). Oh, and, she was holding a pinecone in her left hand.

“… mmngh?” was about all she managed to say, though she opened her eyes and blinked, looking up. At trees, and sky. Trees? What were trees doing in her bedroom? There were no trees in the dormi---…

Mitsuru pushed herself up into a sitting position, and looked around again, coming rapidly and almost fully awake now. Probably due to the surge of adrenaline that came from realizing that if there were no trees in the dorm, and she was surrounded by trees, she wasn’t in the dormitory. Or probably anywhere near home: Tatsumi Port Island didn’t have more than the occasional decorative tree, and Iwatodai proper wasn’t much better; there just weren’t forests around. And she was definitely in a forest, with nothing but trees in sight in all directions. Now that she looked around, the forest didn’t seem to be in the best of conditions, either: many trees were toppled over with chunks of dirt still clinging to their roots, or snapped in half somewhere along their trunks. So something had happened here. But she filed that away for later consideration: her first concern was, how had she gotten here? She couldn’t remember anything that would lead to sleeping out, alone, in a forest; she could remember being in the dorm, planning to head over to the school for a meeting with the new Chairman, and that was the last thing. Then, waking up here.

“How in the world…” she trailed off, trying to think. Most likely? She’d been kidnapped. She was the daughter of – no, she was the head of the Kirijo Group. For most of her childhood, there had been bodyguards around to assure that no one attempted to get at Takeharu Kirijo by kidnapping his only child. And now, now she was even more important. But if she’d been kidnapped for ransom, or for her position, why was she lying alone in a forest? “It doesn’t make any sense,” she told herself quietly.

As she thought about it, she continued looking around, and that was when she noticed the small bag, lying on the ground a few feet away from her. She got to her feet (oh, she was wearing boots, at least, she realized, which was good, if she was going to be in the woods for long. Or going to have to fight off kidnappers, or hike back to civilization) and scooped it up. It had something in romanji written on it: Vas Captio. She just assumed they were words in English that she didn’t know: her English was fair, but her vocabulary wasn’t all that expansive. Anyway, the bag wasn’t hers – and neither were the contents. Socks? Mints? Matches? And a book? She rifled through quickly, and her stomach sank when she realized that not a thing of hers was in the bag; not her wallet, or her cellphone, or her Evoker.

Why did I think it would be? It’s in my room.

But she’d still hoped… She shook her head. Hoping really wasn’t going to help. She had to do something. “Okay. If you’re lost in the woods… You…” Huh. What did you do when lost in the woods, anyway? Wasn’t there something about… moss growing on trees? But since so many of the trees had been knocked down, and since she couldn’t recall what that adage about moss was, exactly, she settled for choosing a direction, and beginning to walk. At the end of the day, Mitsuru was a city girl, with a city girl’s logic and a lack of any real backwoods experience at all. But as she saw it, staying where she’d been dumped wasn’t an acceptable plan; what if her abductor came back? And she’d find something, sooner or later: a stream or a river, a hill to climb and look around from, even a road if she was very lucky. She swung the bag over one arm, (the bottled water would come in handy, even if she was still in the dark about the socks), set her shoulders, and started to walk.

Trees had fallen left and right, crisscrossing in places and their branches making a rather formidable maze. He had set in his mind the direction he'd heard the original voice come from, now it was just a matter of keeping his compass set on that path. Trying to navigate around a large pine the Doctor stubbed his toe. "Oh bugger," he cursed, hopping on one foot a moment. "Stupid--" a voice overlapped his own, "..someone there?" He'd heard and the Doctor tried with a mild grimace to ignore the throbbing of his toe. Wasn't that rubber top supposed to keep him from harming his toes?

"Oh, yes, still here!" He called off again, rounding a tree and climbing to the top of a steep ridge. Looking down he could see a deep crack running through the earth, and beside it a girl, dressed in what he recognized as a school uniform. "You alright down there?" He asked quickly, looking left and right as he tried to think of the safest way down.

Settling on the slope to the left the man in Chucks and specs carefully worked his way down the hill sideways, feeling the recently jarred dirt shifting a bit beneath his weight. His left foot slid out a bit under him, causing him to catch himself as he fell back a bit. "Didn't expect that," he said more to himself than the girl on the other side of the crevice.

Righting himself, the Doctor wiped his hands on the sides of his suit, the brown dirt leaving harsh marks on the fabric. Wasn't like it could be much salvaged anyway, the fall in the woods yesterday and sitting in dank tunnels had pretty much turned his suit tattered. "Hello!" He called to the redhead with a small wave.

The second time, she heard the other person's voice much better, and looked up, just in time to see that person come around a tree. To be fair, Mitsuru was just a bit surprised to see a foreigner -- but it was a mild surprise in a morning thus far full of far more mysterious happenings. He looked a bit worse for the wear, too; mud all over. She nodded, still looking up, and began to respond, "Yes, I'm quite alri--"

But stopped, as he started to make his way down the slope, and skidded. She gasped, for just a second convinced he'd lose balance and go toppling into the crevice. Thankfully, it didn't happen. "Ah," she breathed out. "I'm fine. I just appear to have become lost."

Well, that was an understatement. Technically, it was true, though. She was definitely lost. Though, for someone who was lost, she sounded perfectly collected and almost perfectly calm. She paused a moment, and then decided to ask a question. Not the primary question on her mind, but one that had been puzzling her all day. She wasn't sure she really wanted to start telling the first strange person she met, I've been kidnapped and I woke up with no memory of how I got here. But this was a safer question. "... has something occurred here? It looks, well..." she swept one hand in front of her, gesturing towards the giant crack in the ground. "Like a disaster of some kind."

The girl's voice stuttered a bit as he'd managed to slip down the hill, yet the Doctor flashed a winning grin indicating he was quite alright.

"Lost? Oh.." He breathed a moment, always awkward meeting the new ones. "Yes, er, well, we're all quite lost, actually. Well, at least kidnapped? I suppose that's a better way of putting it. Haven't been kidnapped before.. Arrested, placed under custody, marooned.. Never kidnapped..." He'd gone from focused to rambly at the speed of the TARDIS through the time vortex. Had he been conscious of it he might have apologized.

"Oh.. well, you just missed the earthquake." Yes, he said that more in a manner of someone who'd just missed out on the last piece of cheese at a mixer. Yet, what other way was there to put it? She'd shown up at just the right time to be both helpful and avoid the pitfalls that came with the world shaking with an incredible amount of force at your feet.

The Doctor, taking a running start, made a flying leap over the wide crack. Who knew how far down it went, and he hadn't bothered to really look. What mattered is that he had cleared to the other side without falling in or breaking his ankle. Just what this place needed, another person with a broken ankle.

"So, I trust you've got your journal, yes?"

"Journal? You mean the book in the little satchel here?" She nodded her head at the bag, trying to deal with the least confusing (and most recent) thing first. Then, on to the rest, the kidnapped bit. She crossed her arms loosely across her front, and paused for a moment.

"Well, who have I - or, we? - been kidnapped by? And, wherever we are, it must be quite far from my home. I would have heard about an earthquake in the vicinity, if it was this serious." Again, giant fissure in the ground; minor earthquakes didn't do that.

"Or, I have been unconscious for longer than I thought." Either she'd been transported a very long way, or much time had elapsed; but it also meant that right now, people were searching for her. And that helped her keep her chin up, and manner confident.

"Yes, right, ehrm..." He was about to start by explaining the journal and it's map to her when she started asking about the people in charge. It forced the Doctor to give pause a moment, rethinking what might be important to answer.

"Well, we haven't properly met whomever's in charge around here. Though, when I do meet them I think I have a few things that I need to explain." The least of which being that canned pears were not acceptable as the only option for fruit. Hadn't they heard of bananas or oranges? How about Pineapples?

"For most of us it was a blink. Can I ask where your from and when?" No beating around the bush with the Doctor, he liked putting the times and spaces together in neat little categories. Perhaps she came form a world with cybermen and Torchwood? Perhaps she came from a world with Rose Tyler. The Doctor could hope.

"Iwatodai City, in Japan. March eighth, two-thousand and ten. But why when?" She frowned a little. Why, of all things, would someone ask when she was from? Mitsuru was beginning to dislike the implications of the questions he was asking her, and his answers, such as they were. There was a 'we', which meant at least one other person, if not more, in this situation. "And I have been somewhat impolite in making inquiries before introducing myself, I think. I am Mitsuru Kirijo, and it is nice to meet you."

Now, would he be aware of who she was? If he was familiar at all with the Iwatodai area, he'd have to be. Too many things carried the Kirijo name in the area. (Even the local shopping mall was named for the Group.) If he didn't recognize it, it was one more piece of proof that she was quite far away from home.

She smiled, just a little. "And turnabout is fair, yes? Might I ask your name, and where and when you are from?"

"2010?" The Doctor grinned. "Any hint of cybermen? Aliens in London? People standing on roof ledges?" Alright, he'd tapped most of what people would know. It wouldn't do to go on and on about Slytheen or even think of mentioning the year that never was.

"Er, well, everyone seems to come from generally different times... Paralel universes, too." He was holding out the smallest hope she knew what a cyberman was. If she did she might be from Rose's world - if that happened? The Doctor was letting his attention get fogged. He had work to get back to, didn't he? It wouldn't do to go an get sidetracked thinking of worlds that were unreachable aside from this unseen hand behind the curtain. He needed to talk with that person, they were ripping holes in the fabric of space and time and that was a very dangerous thing to do.

"Oh, politeness isn't something that really applies in situations like this one, I'd say. You haven't been injured, have you Mitsuru?" his hands were in his pockets as he was thinking. Another person meant another place would be needed for her to sleep. Though, it also meant another pair of hands.

"London, 2008," little white lie given with a poker-faced smile. "I'm the Doctor," insert cheeky grin here. That's right, he was the Doctor and he had work to do.

The Gallifreyan felt driven for a moment, he did have work to get back to. "Let me show you this before I forget," he said gesturing to the journal. "Now, I haven't quite figured out how they work yet.. but the Journals are the way we all communicate.. Oh, and there's a map in the front." He took a couple of steps closer. "Oh, you wouldn't by chance be a dcotor, would you? We have a significant amount of injured back in town..." He was looking over his shoulder in the direction he'd come from, an invisible thread drawing him back there.

Cybermen? Aliens? People on rooftops? Mitsuru couldn't help but think that one of these things was not quite like the other, though she hadn't any clue about any of them. "No, not a hint of... Well, do you mean cyber as in virtual, or as in robotic?" She paused in mid-sentence to consider it - she seldom thought of Aigis in those terms anymore, and though nobody could describe Aigis as a cyber "man", yes, Mitsuru did live with a robot. (Among other oddities.)

She pulled out the book -- journal, she supposed -- from her satchel and flipped it open to the front, looking for this map, although her attention was still fixed on what the Doctor was saying. When he asked if he'd been injured, she shook her head. And she ignored the way he used her given name. He was a foreigner. They did that sort of thing.

"I'm uninjured. Unfortunately, I'm also not a doctor, although I do have some experience at dealing with serious injury. Mostly... like First Aid, though." Which was at least partly true. She did have experience at dealing with wounds sustained in battle - but it was mostly through healing magic. And she had no way to access her Persona. Which gave her a terrible sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach, in a way that "kidnapping" and "earthquake" had failed to do. Disaster was one thing - being helpless in the face of disaster was what really terrified Mitsuru. She looked down into her journal and began to look for this map, for a moment looking nearly as dismayed and helpless as she felt.

"So are you a medical doctor? Or an academic doctorate." After all, if he was a medical doctor and there were "significant amounts of injured in town", what was he doing wandering in the woods? "Ah, I see, there is a map," she said, and her mind jolted off of that track of inquiry as she flipped to the right page.

The Doctor observed as his words held little or no meaning for her. It was fine, he was used to getting the sort of look like he was speaking gibberish. "Ah, well, if your world had cybermen, you'd know..." Those upgrading, deleting, modifying fools. He couldn't begin to try and describe them with thier skins of metal and emotions purged. No, this girl clearly had enough going on having been dropped here in the first place without his introducing her to the world of the mean and nasty.

"Oh, good," he nodded as she took out the journal. "Now, if you need someone, just write where you are; they'll see." He wished he had his journal here to explain it to her. It made a bit more sense when you could see how the things actually worked. Well, not that you saw how they actually worked... He sure wished he could take them apart.

"Well, uninjured is good; it means you'll still be able to help, yes?" There were plenty of other things people needed help with beyond healing including shelter. Not to mention finding food, or salvaging items from the ruined bits of town - able hands were needed. He didn't know how to better convey that.

"Oh, Doctor; it's my name." That was probably the most congenial he'd been when it came to explaining his name in a while. Perhaps it was the disheartened look he saw flash across her face. He needed to be gentle; at least for now, even if his energy and will told him that he ought to go and take over the whole of the town.

"We're here," he said, leaning in to point to an area to the left of the portion indicated as the carnival. "If you're able, I'm sure they could use some help at the gym," he pointed there, too. "We all work together here..." Well, perhaps not all, but most.

"Oh, and if you decide to read the whole lot of it, ignore that person rambling on and on about nonsense. They're there to make you upset. Don't give them the satisfaction." His feet planted a moment as he looked at the gashed earth and make the short dash and subsequent leap across.

"Coming?" He asked over his shoulder.

Doctor was his name? Well, different strokes, she supposed. Or maybe he was just mistranslating his own name into Japanese? But now really wasn't the time to mull it over; like many other things thus far today, Mitsuru put it on a mental shelf for later consideration. Her journal, she put back into the bag over her shoulder, and secured it as best she could.

"Of course I'm coming," she said, looking across to the Doctor. She backed up a little, and considered the distance for a brief moment. It was considerable: but she'd done things sort of like this in gym class. Not over bottomless pits, granted, but... Conquer fear. That was the program.

Taking a breath, she started to sprint towards the edge, pushed off the ground, and leaped the gap. When she hit the other side, she skidded to a halt after a step or two, the heels of her boots making shallow, long gashes in the mud. Once she'd stopped, she flipped part of her hair back over her shoulder - it had gotten disarrayed in the jump, of course, a hazard of having so much and always wearing it loose. She smiled a little, feeling slightly more confident.

"I'm willing and able to help - the gym is where I ought to go?"

He watched as she traversed the gash and landed safely on the other side. He hadn't faulted her the momentary pause as she evaluated it's width; not everyone had Gallifreyan reflexes and an ego the size of a small planet the rely upon for confidence on getting across.

"The gym is where the most hurt people are, I'm sure they could use the hands." He thought a moment, scratching his head as he started at an easy pace up the hillside he'd formerly nearly slid down. "Er, and if you're free later, I know we'll need more hands at the barn getting the walls back up. There isn't much left in terms of habitable structures, unfortunately."

The Doctor held back a tree branch to let her pass before quickly closing the gap to walk beside her again. "Gym to start with, though," he concluded, squinting ahead as he tried to place the buckled road among the toppled trees and jutting bits of earth. More importantly he noticed the trusses of the Ferris wheel as they hung out between tree branches.

"Well, welcome to Vas Captio," he said, when they finally reached the road the pavement cracked and chipped crackling like gravel beneath his Chucks.

Mitsuru had a little bit of trouble scrambling up the slope, although the heels on her boots hampered her progress less than you might think - she did wear boots with fairly good traction, even though they were also fashionable. She just wasn't used to scrambling around outdoors. (She did most of her scrambling and running and climbing indoors - in the hallways and on the stairs of Tartarus - or around the city.) Climbing muddy hills, dealing with tree branches, all of it was a new challenge for her. So she was focusing a good part of her attention on it.

Once they came out onto the road, Mitsuru looked around; the pavement, cracked and broken, was even more proof of the recent earthquake. As for the Ferris Wheel's pieces, well... at the moment, they were just more debris to the Japanese girl, and had nothing to do with a carnival at all. (Although once she identified them, she'd have a whole handful of new questions: what was this place doing with a Ferris Wheel of all things?)

"What did you call it? Vas Captio?" It was... wasn't that what had been printed on her bag? The nonsense Engrish? "Is that English? Or something else? I've never heard those words before, and I did get the highest score in my school on my last English proficiency exam."

"Ah, yes, Vas Captio." He pointed to her bag. "It's Latin, actually. Glass cage, or something there about." The Doctor's pace was slow as he was mindful of his companion's footwear. Wouldn't do to have someone otherwise able bodied incapacitated thanks for a rolled ankle.

"It's apparently an accurate description of where we are," he scrunched his nose as he looked at the Ferris wheel. He was currently wishing he'd managed to cannibalize more parts from it before. Ah, well, too late now.

"I'm not sure if you had a chance to see the glass wall, it runs around the whole place. Unbreakable, bound at the molecular level with some sort of metal. It runs further underground than we've been able to dig and it's higher than we can really climb." That's that, everything out in the open now. The Doctor was prepared for a myriad of questions. Though, he wasn't quite sure what wasn't obvious given his explanation of the wall. They couldn't break it, dig under it or climb over it. Effectively they were inside of a glass cage.

The pair skirted the road, passing the carnival and the gas station, and coming up on ahead was the museum, it's roof collapsed and the door hanging lopsidedly. He needed to remember to get in there and get his coat. "Museum," he pointed. "Lived there the past week or so."

And so, trainers carried on down the smashed road, they'd be at the gym in no time flat.
