Who: Jack Harkness and Remy LeBeau
What: The Cajun comes back to the Post Office and Jack finds him.
Where: The Post Office
When: 2104 - Day 10
Rating: Er, it's R now.
Status: Complete!

The Cajun had spent his entire day in a way he certainly wasn't interested in spending it. He'd wandered around the outside of the town with the Doctor all morning, which had been great, as they were trying to figure out a way out of here.. but then it'd gone sour when the earthquake had happened. The red-head had very quickly become an unwilling hero and had gone around saving people with the Doctor. At first. He'd tried to escape, and after dropping the people off at the gym he'd gone back out to try and get some time away from any further heroics.. but he'd been hauled in again. Then again. And again. He'd been trying to get into the museum all day, and he'd finally managed it just a while ago. And now here he was, having returned to the Post Office to stare at the closed door. He'd jimmied it shut with a stick earlier in the day so it wouldn't be open for all to see in. He didn't want anyone mucking up his escape, if that tunnel really lead to one.

However, he couldn't bring himself to go inside the building, couldn't bring himself to abandon the people here. Or maybe he couldn't bring himself to abandon the Doctor. He let out a slow breath and pushed his hands deeper into the pockets of his coat. He felt like an idiot for not being able to leave this people in his dust and hightail it out of here. Just earlier today, he'd been willing to sell them out. But then.. well.. things had happened. Red eyes lowered to the ground, then back up again at the Post Office. He was only standing about five feet from the door, nearly invisible in the dark, in that  coat.. except for his hair. That red hair stood out in even the smallest bit of moonlight.

Face impassive, Jack looked back and forth between Gambit and other areas of the town. Seemed like all that was missing from the scenes around the town were the sounds of sirens. Truth be told, the near silence was almost eerie and if this is what The Powers were going for, they succeeded in Jack's estimation. "I've heard rumours," Jack said, frowning. Not to mention his own moment of dying as well. "Something tells me the Powers weren't concerned about what happened, even if the evidence is contrary when the Doctors all received machinery this morning."

Toys, that's what they were. Nothing more than toys and Jack wasn't sure how he felt about that.

Jack smiled, crossing his arms in front of his chest. "Touche, sir," Jack said, inclining his head. "Touche." Jack was looking about as worse for wear as Gambit was, though he would get a shower later. His chin was starting to show the scruff of the past few days -- more that could be taken care of once he knew where others could sleep. The gym made him uncomfortable but there was nothing that could be done tonight, unfortunately.

"I will be," Jack replied, nodding. "With so many people injured, those of us who aren't should be around to lend a hand. Even the Doctors got banged up today." THere was a silent challenge in his words, wanting to see if Gambit would head back to the gym.

The Cajun just grinned as Jack complimented him and declared the little stalemate.. but when he gave him that look? When he challenged him that way? He physically took a step back and lifted up both gloved hands, spreading his fingers wide as if in surrender. It was an odd gesture, not something that a normal person would really do, when they felt like they'd been cornered. It was automatic.

"Go back to 'de gym? Non. No chance in Hell, mon ami." He lowered his hands. "Dis af'ernoon, had a tree fall on me. It hur'." Of course it hurt! "'Den, 'de Doct'r, he make me haul two people out of 'de Theat'r, an I almos' get my hea' taken off by E'war' 'de Knifehan's. An 'den, I gotta carry 'dem to 'de gym on my ba' shoul'er. 'Den I fin' a girl in 'de pharm'cy, all pin to 'de wall like a fly, almos' die in 'dere, throw up, gotta drag her back to 'de gym. 'Den 'de girl in 'de fores', an' her boyfrien' in 'de fores', had to help 'dem." Red eyes rolled up. "An' Shannon-- gotta babysi' her twice, make sure she don' sleep an' die, non? Between 'dat, I was helpin' wit-- You know wha'? I ain' helpin' no one no more. You all can help yourselves." He crossed his arms across his chest then, but was smirking some.

"I ain' no hero. 'Das you. 'Dey nee' help, mon ami, 'dey can use you. 'Dis Cajun dun his par'."

Of all the reactions to get, that was the one Jack wasn't expecting: a look of... dare he call it surrender? Jack frowned, shaking his head as he looked at the Cajun, unsure if he was surprised or disappointed. He had intended the challenge, yes, but not to corner, merely curious.

"I had a good portion of the museum roof fall on me," Jack replied. "But I'm not in the mood for competition tonight." Though he did for a brief moment wonder how Logan had fared during this whole ordeal. "I'd say someone had quite the day," Jack said, almost jealous that his day wasn't as exciting in the saving column. But figuring out where people could go for the night and the future was just as important as well.

"We all can help ourselves?" That bit caught Jack's attention and he turned, looking the Cajun full on. "I may be a self-proclaimed hero, but after today? We're all in this together. The end--" Jack broke off abruptly. He wouldn't say those words again. "We're in this together," Jack said again, with a nod. "We'll never get out of here if we don't lend a hand."

Careful what you say, Jack. Because when the other American announced that he'd had part of the museum roof fall on him, it made Gambit turn his head some, lifting his chin a little as he did. It was clear what he was thinking: Jack didn't have any injuries that would be expected from something like that. And the first thing that came to his mind: Wolverine. He healed up, and no matter what you did to the man (trust him, he'd thought about it.. often..) he just didn't die.

"Oui, you all can help yourself. I did my par', I ain' you." Announced again, as he finally lowered his hands and crossed his arms over his chest, very quickly bringing himself out of that defensive line of thinking. It wasn't going to do anyone any good. "Look, I help when I gotta, okay? Bu' I ain' gon' be runnin' 'roun' all 'de time savin' people. We in 'dis toget'er, but I still gotta look out for me, an' you shoul' be lookin' out for you. An' your missus." He couldn't resist that little jab and the grin that came with it. He did like to play?

Jack was tired and was also tired of watching what he said. It was going to be clear enough quite soon that Jack didn't die so why try to hide something that couldn't easily be hidden. He'd been in the museum, the roof had fallen and that was all there was to it. He was up and walking around, fresh as a daisy so why pretend he was injured. It was only going to be counter productive. Jack got crushed, Jack died, Jack heard the disembodied voice of his younger brother, Jack came back to life: end of story.

"So you keep saying," Jack said, crossing his arms in front of his chest. "By my count now, this is either the third or fourth time you've found it necessary to say such. 'He that protests the loudest'," Jack intoned with a smirk. Damn but it was fun to play with the other man -- all innuendos implied. "Used to look out for me," he said softly, a touch of bitterness entering his voice. "It's just as easy to look out for numbers one through thirty, not just number one. And Ianto can handle himself, otherwise I never would have hired him in the first place."

"So I keep sayin'." But when Jack mentioned that saying about he who protested the loudest, the Cajun couldn't help his grin, but was pointing an ungloved finger at him and narrowing his eyes down some, though the smile never wavered. It was hard to wipe it off his face. But it looked so good there. Cocky man. "Ain' no wron' in lookin' out for num'er one. Keep you safe, non? Keep you happy. Ain' got no one to worry 'bou' but yourself." And that was the way Gambit liked it. He was slowly lowering his hand and recrossing his arms over his chest, mimicking Jack (whether to play that game with him, or simply because it was comfortable for his injured shoulder, was yet to be seen).

"You hire Yan'no? Wha' you do, anyway? Save 'de worl' from aliens, oui? But you hirin' people do do 'dat wit' you? You like Roswell? Area fi'ty-one?" Pardon him, Jack. He did like his comics, and he'd seen programs on the Discovery Channel one too many times.
